Shocking report – the number of Hungarians is fast decreasing

Change language:
Penzcentrum.hu reports about the latest data revealing that the number of Hungarians has decreased in 2017. While a decreasing population is not only true for Hungary – the tendency can be observed in most countries of the European Union – the shocking data reveals that Hungary lost around 20 thousand people in just one year.
Population decrease in the EU
According to data, the population of the EU was estimated at 512.6 million, as of 1 January 2018. A year before that, the population was only 511.5 million, 1.1 million less. However, the registered number of births and deaths seem to contradict that.
In the past year, there were 5.3 million deaths but only 5.1 million births, suggesting that the population is naturally decreasing.
Therefore, the increase in the population by the beginning of 2018 can only be accounted for by migration.
Hungary shows similar signs of a decreasing population. At the beginning of 2017, there were 9.797 million people registered while in 2018, this number was 9.778 million, suggesting a decrease of 20 thousand people in just one year.
There were 94.6 thousand births as opposed to 131.9 thousand deaths.

Other countries in the EU that have to deal with more deaths than births are Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Italy, Lithuania, Romania, Portugal, Germany, Spain, Finland, Estonia, Slovenia, Poland as well as Latvia.
Countries with the highest and lowest birth rates – Ireland and Italy
The number of children born in the EU was 5.1 million in 2017, displaying an almost 90 thousand decrease compared to the year before.
The highest birth rate was found in Ireland (12.9 births per 1000 people),
followed by Sweden (11.5 per 1000), Great Britain and France (11.4 per 1000 for both). The lowest birth numbers were produced by Italy (7.6 births per 1000 people), followed by Greece (8.2 per 1000), Portugal (8.4 per 1000), Spain (8.4 per 1000), Croatia (8.9 per 1000) and Bulgaria (9 per 1000). The EU average was 9.9 births per 1000 people.

Hungarians best learn to reproduce and fast. Practise only gets a country so far! Maybe the government should have a “black out” like what happened in Canada with the result of a baby boom. Or maybe a competition to see which region can produce more children or maybe a lottery. Sad news nonetheless.
