Smog alerts in place across Hungary
Budapest, January 28 (MTI) – Smog alerts have been maintained in Budapest and in several cities and towns across the country due to the high concentration of airborne dust particles.
The National Centre for Public Health declared a red alert in Miskolc, Sajószentpéter, Kazincbarcika, Putnok, Hernádszurdok and Salgotarján on Saturday. Here the concentrations of particulate matter (PM10) in the air exceeds what is considered to be a safe level.
The authority declared a lower, orange smog alert for the cities of Budapest, Vác, Esztergom, NyÃregyháza, Eger and Veszprém. Residents in these towns and cities have been advised to avoid polluted areas and to use public transport instead of cars.
The national weather service said no improvement in air quality was likely over the next two days.
