Socialists: Matolcsy must go

Budapest, April 29 (MTI) – The opposition Socialist Party has demanded that Gyorgy Matolcsy, governor of the National Bank of Hungary (NBH), should either resign or be removed from his post over recent scandals.

“Matolcsy must go”, Socialist leader József Tóbiás told a press conference on Friday. He insisted that the governor has proved unworthy of his position through his approach to the scandal around bankrupt brokerage firm Quaestor, his role in the case around the central bank’s foundations, as well as the way troubled forex debtors have been treated.

Concerning the foundations, Tóbiás pointed to the responsibility of the prime minister, the head of the prime minister’s office and the economy minister. He suggested that they had “assisted” to the deals. He also said that members of the central bank’s supervisory board should make a clear breast if they had approved of the bank’s “illegitimate” transactions.

Ruling Fidesz dismissed the Socialist “attack” and said that under Hungary’s Socialist government the central bank had “served foreign interests” and harmed the country through “leaking information to the IMF on a daily basis”. At that time NBH produced a deficit, its operations were illegal and it financed private banks while “forcing” Hungarian families to take out forex loans, Fidesz said in a statement.
