Statements from Orbán outrage Kyiv: ‘Call your friend Putin’
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said on Friday that in the current situation, it would be a “bloodbath to start a counteroffensive”. Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said the Hungarian PM’s absurd stance violated EU values and international law. He wrote that if the Hungarian prime minister is really concerned about human lives, he should call his “friend Vladimir Putin” to withdraw his troops from Ukraine. In that case, the war would end.
Prime Minister Viktor Orbán was a guest on Kossuth Radio’s Good Morning, Hungary (Jó reggelt, Magyarország) programme on Friday morning. He discussed Hungary’s 2024 budget, inflation, the Turkish presidential election and the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, among other issues. We wrote about this in detail HERE.
On the sanctions packages closely linked to the war, he said that the conflict in Ukraine has winners and losers. However, those who lose relatives are the ones who suffer the most. “In the East, the situation is unchanged, the war has entered a brutal phase,” Index quotes Orbán as saying.
Orbán said that “Hungary is not involved in the war, we are watching from outside. It imposes a direct threat on us, but we are not involved.” According to him, “everybody in the West is enthusiastic about the Ukrainian counteroffensive”. However, “if I attack, my losses are three times greater than if I defend,” he said.
“In these circumstances, it is a bloodbath to launch a counter-attack. We must initiate a ceasefire before then. One of the biggest challenges in politics is to admit your own past mistakes. To such an extent they have fallen into the trap of believing that the war can be won with Western support and fighting that it will be very difficult for them to turn off this path,” he said.
This was the sentence that sparked a huge outcry among Ukrainians. Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to Zelenskyy, responded with a lengthy post on Twitter. You can read his whole tweet below:
The absurd public position of @PM_ViktorOrban once again demonstratively insults the values of the European Union and international law in general. This is a deliberate humiliation of Europe and condonation of Russia’s terrorist actions. This is a deliberate justification of the…

As we reported earlier today, Patriarch Kirill has written a letter to PM Viktor Orbán on the occasion of his 60th birthday. The Moscow Patriarch has awarded Orbán the First Degree of the Order of Glory and Honour.

Of course it will be a bloodbath for the poor conscripted soldiers of Russia, underage, underequipt, undertrained and undersupported. Of course, a recipiant of the Order Of Glory and Honour by a basphamy spewing leader of the Russian orthodox church could not be wrong, could he? Fulfilling the Hungarian legacy of being on the wrong side of history.
Or Hungary could always side with Ukraine and join their Jew war to further Jewish dominance over the global economy. Who cares about the fact that minority Hungarians are being persecuted by Ukrainian govt. So it doest really matter what your or think we just cancel each other out.
Janos: Jew war? Weren’t Ukrainians suppose to be nazis? So many trolls here it would be funny unless it was a real war that Russia brutally initiated and has lead to so many innocent deaths of men, women and children. Only way to prevent further attacks by Russia is to crush their military and Putin and his gang.
It’s none of Orban Viktor or Hungary’s business to tell Ukraine whether to engage in a counter-offensive. It is Ukraine’s decision and Hungary should be ashamed of Russian Award Winner Orban’s continuous promotion of Kremlin propaganda to allow Russia to continue its’ occupation. The only way the Russians will leave is if they are forced to leave and Ukraine has every right of self-defence to force them out. Countries that decide to help Ukraine are within their rights and morally correct in opposing Russian imperialist conquest of a peaceful country.
Janos Hunyadi you are engaging in blatant anti-Semitism on this website. Unfortunately Hungary has always had a problem with anti-Semitism. I see that Fidesz has brainwashed you with grievance politics regarding the ethnic-Hungarian minority in Ukraine. Russia and Fidesz like to promote this to keep as much of the Hungarian public as possible against Ukraine to allow the Russians to do their dirty work there undisturbed. Fidesz has also used underlying anti-Semitism to create George Soros as a bogeyman orchestrator of some kind of “liberal” attack on Hungary. The Soros billboards in Hungary along with others are reminiscent of communist regime propaganda decades ago.
