A summer university for Hungarian-speaking university and college students from across the border, the 27th Hungarian Summer University in the Carpathian Basin and the Forum for Hungarian Institutions of the Hungarian diaspora in the Carpathian Basin, opened at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) in Budapest on Wednesday.
The courses held by the faculties of political and legal sciences, natural sciences, humanities, IT, and teacher training last until July 15.
ELTE’s rector, László Borhy, told the opening ceremony that the summer university was going from strength to strength each year, and around 150 students are in Budapest from the regions of Transylvania, Upper Hungary in Slovakia, Transcarpathia and Vojvodina.
This year’s courses will revolve around artificial intelligence as part of an interdisciplinary section, he noted.
Veronika Varga-Bajusz, the state secretary for higher education, vocational and adult training at the ministry of culture and innovation, said Hungarian higher education had seen a turnaround in competitiveness and accessibility, with the number of students from disadvantaged areas increasing significantly.
This year 12 Hungarian universities are in the top 5 percent in the world rankings, while 3 belong to the top 2 percent and one is in the top 1 percent, she said. Also, compared with 2020, higher-education funding has doubled, she added.
