Synagogue’s week in Budapest – here are the events!
The United Hungarian Jewish Community (EMIH) is preparing for the autumn Jewish holidays with cultural, religious and family programs from August 27 to September 5. After long decades, the synagogue of Újbuda and the prayer house on Vörösmarty street are re-opened. The holidays await participants with many programs.
On August 27, the synagogue on Vörösmarty street will open. On August 29, Sóletfesztivál, a gastro-celebration, will take place, where food from four countries can be tried. The event also hosts activities for children and cultural programs.
The children’s program of the Jakab Kalap band starts at 11 AM, followed by a conversation between director Tamás Réczei and Miklós H. Vecsei, Junior Prima Award-winning actor at 12 AM. An hour later, the official opening and ceremonial speeches take place, after which Klezmer musical production by Ádám Móser starts at 2 PM.
Also, on 29 August, the Újbuda Synagogue will open, and two concerts will await visitors. From 19:30, Alex Clare will have a concert, followed by Nissim Black‘s performance starting at 20:45. To participate, a Covid security certificate (vaccine certificate or a certificate that one has recovered from the virus and is now protected against it) is necessary. Tickets for the concerts can be bought online HERE.
On September 2, Óbuda Synagogue will celebrate its 200 years. Starting at 8 PM a play will take place. “The title character of the play, Mose Munz, was the most prestigious rabbi of the former community of Óbuda and also served as the head of the religious court of the Jewish community of Óbuda. In 1790, at the suggestion of Rabbi, Ezekiel Landau of Prague, he became chief rabbi of Óbuda, the successor to Natan Günsburger, who had died nine years earlier. Mose Munz also initiated the third construction of the synagogue. When the building was completed, he gave the inaugural speech, which was printed out in Vienna in the same year. Until the death of Mose Munz, he remained chief rabbi of Óbuda.”- writes the official website of the event. Tickets can be bought by clicking HERE.
On the last day of the line of events, family day and festive opening are planned. Activities for children are organised for that day. This program will be held at Zsilip.
