Syrian human smuggling suspect arrested in Western Hungary
A Syrian human smuggling suspect who transported 49 migrants in a van was stopped by police at Ajka, in western Hungary, on Thursday.
The van with Austrian number plates contained 49 men who claimed to be Syrian but were unable to present documents showing that they had the right to stay in Hungary, Veszprém County police headquarters said on police.hu. The migrants have been escorted back to a temporary security border closure, its statement added.
The 23-year-old Syrian has been detained and criminal proceedings launched against him.
A significant amount of cash and suspected illegal substance were seized from the van, the statement said.
