Szijjártó meets new Transcarpathian governor
Budapest, September 9 (MTI) – Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó met Hennadiy Moskal, recently appointed governor of the Transcarpathia (Kárpátalja) region in western Ukraine, in Budapest on Wednesday.
Speaking at a joint press conference after the talks, Szijjártó welcomed measures taken by the new governor and progress made in providing for the region’s security so far.
Cooperation with Ukraine and with the country’s Transcarpathia region has been an important component of Hungary’s foreign policy, Szijjártó said.
He noted that Hungary has so far offered 7.1 million dollars to the region and has provided 750,000 dollars to help other regions in Ukraine.
There are Hungarian diplomats and monitors working on OSCE and EU missions in that country, he said.
Hungary wants to strengthen economic cooperation with the Transcarpathian region, Szijjarto said, adding that opening additional border crossings would serve this goal.
Further, Hungary’s Eximbank is ready to finance road construction projects, the minister said.
He said the governor stated his commitment towards maintaining the rights of the Hungarian community.
Moskal thanked Hungary for all of its contribution to economic, social and infrastructure projects.
In connection with the migrant crisis Moskal noted that a migration pressure has been prevalent at the region’s borders with Slovakia, Hungary and Romania over the past three weeks, adding that all possible efforts had been taken to prevent an escalation of the situation.
