Orbán cabinet did everything to stop Ukraine getting aided arms shipments, but failed
The Hungarian government has refused to contribute 6.5 billion euros of compensation to European Union member states that have shipped arms to Ukraine, Péter Szijjártó, the foreign minister, said in Brussels on Monday.
Szijjártó told a press conference after a meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council that Hungary raised the sole veto to the payment of approximately 6.5 billion euros from the European Peace Facility to member states that have supplied weapons to Ukraine, thereby withholding around 77 million euros of Hungarian money. He added that neither Hungary supplied weapons nor contributed to the arms shipment. But if the other EU member states “want to do so voluntarily, Hungary will not stand in their way”, he said.
He added that Hungary will not give a nod to relocating an EU training mission coordination unit to Kyiv or the deployment of EU advisors to Kyiv to coordinate the reform of the Ukrainian security sector. Szijjártó said deploying people to Kyiv for the purposes of training, coordination, and advice as part of an EU program was “extremely risky” and risked escalation. Regarding the 15th sanctions package against Russia, which allows Hungarian oil and gas company MOL to export products derived from Russian crude oil, the minister called the exemption “important”. “As we managed to strip out the crazy ideas … we did not veto it in the end,” he said. Commenting on the attempt to put Patriarch Kirill on the sanctions list, he said punishing church leaders “should be avoided at all costs”, adding that all hopes for peace would be lost if lines of communication involving churches were cut.

Also, he said the EU had tried to put Russia’s UN ambassador on the list, “which is strange as the UN is the last port of call for political consultations…” “We vetoed this and also signaled that we won’t at all support the sanctioning of the Russian Olympic Committee. Mixing sports and politics … is unacceptable.” Szijjártó said a new reality had emerged in the war in Ukraine owing to the election win of Donald Trump and to Russian military victories on the battlefield. Far from being “Putinist propaganda,” he added that even his Ukrainian counterpart had confirmed the facts on the ground. He said that, “sadly”, this new state of affairs had been ignored in Brussels as most EU member states were still pushing a “failed war strategy” and feeding the risk of escalation. Regarding a Christmas truce, he said no one at today’s council meeting had backed a ceasefire “that would save lives”. He added that some at the meeting had even spoken against the proposal of a truce. Szijjártó called his Polish counterpart’s suggestion that Ukrainian men of military age living in the EU should have their social support withdrawn “harsh”.

Hungarian government aims for transparency: The big EU Funds overhaul!
The Hungarian government is poised to introduce substantial reforms to the rules governing the implementation of Hungary’s Recovery and Resilience Plan, aiming to enhance the transparency of financial and administrative processes while improving access to EU funds.
According to Portfolio, the proposed measures span a broad range of areas, including project financing structures and oversight mechanisms. These reforms are expected to have far-reaching implications for both the Recovery EU Funds and the Cohesion Framework.
One of the most important changes is that the Restoration Fund now also covers investments based on projects financed from the central budget. This innovation means that the measures covered by the Restoration Fund will also be subject to the strict rules, even if they are not directly financed by EU funds.
The proposal redefines the concept of financial instruments to bring them into line with the current EU legal framework. The new rules will allow the combined use of grants, which will increase flexibility in the use of EU funds. The funds concerned are the European Regional Development Fund, the Cohesion Fund and the European Social Fund Plus.
Control and transparency
The Internal Audit and Integrity Directorate will also have a broader range of tasks, with a greater role in identifying conflicts of interest and conducting risk-based audits. To support this process, the ARACHNE risk assessment tool will be introduced to help identify potential irregularities in a data-driven manner.
This is partly in response to the European Commission’s expectations to prevent financial fraud and detect irregularities quickly. The rules for setting market prices are also being revised to further increase transparency. For instance, if there are not enough bids in a public procurement procedure, the shortfall can be made through online bidding.
The role of EU Funds
The Regulation allows certain projects to be financed by the Cohesion Fund in the context of operational programmes for the period 2021-2027. This measure could be particularly important if there are obstacles to the absorption of RRF funds, as the deadline for the absorption of such funds is strictly limited to the summer of 2026.
The transfer of projects is subject to strict conditions to ensure that the original objectives and indicators are not compromised. This mechanism can provide a safety net to avoid loss of resources.
The proposal also clarifies a number of technical details. For example, the accuracy of data in the public accounts would be ensured through continuous information to the tax authorities, while the preparation of aid payments would be subject to stricter controls. Control procedures for advance payments would also be fine-tuned to reduce risks.
According to the rules, the new regulation will have a retroactive effect and will enter into force five days after it has been published. This means that the changes will also apply to pending cases.
The next steps
The draft regulation has been published for public consultation until the 17th of December. This will give stakeholders the opportunity to comment on the proposed changes. The government’s aim is to contribute to a faster and more efficient use of EU funds by clarifying the rules and increasing the flexibility of the legal framework while meeting the strict requirements of the EU.
The new rules will not only support more efficient implementation of current projects but will also help Hungary to be better prepared for future EU challenges and opportunities. The measures promise transparency, flexibility and optimal use of resources and EU funds.

PM Orbán: ‘We are building strong countryside’
“We are building a strong countryside because without that there would be no strong Hungary,” Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said at the inauguration of a section of Route 53 bypassing Soltvadkert, in southern Hungary, on Monday.
Hungary’s government had decided as far back as 2010 that it would put an end to the internal migration seen in rural Hungary, and had set out to ensure that certain parts of the country do not have to prosper at the expense of others. “We set out to make the Hungarian countryside an attractive place where it is worth living because there are jobs and high quality services and everything is accessible within a reasonable time frame,” the prime minister said. “It isn’t right that Budapest’s level of development is at 158 percent of the European Union average, while all other regions are below the average.”

Orbán said the town of Soltvadkert and Bács-Kiskun County were “winners of the government’s measures”. He said the employment rate in the county has risen to 74 percent from 56 percent since 2010 while the unemployment rate has fallen to 4 percent from 10 percent. Meanwhile, the average wage has risen to 490,000 forints from 160,000, he added. He said the region would play an even more important role in the future, noting the government’s plan to set up a new economic zone in the country’s southern regions. The government has earmarked 330 billion forints (EUR 806.5m) in next year’s budget for making the southern Hungarian countryside stronger, resilient and independent, Orbán said. He noted ongoing investment projects in Kecskemet, adding that bypasses are also being built next to Szeged and Baja, with another one planned for Pécs.
Orbán said that when he last visited Soltvadkert during the European Parliament election campaign in the spring, “there appeared to be no chance for peace” in neighbouring Ukraine. Hungary, he said, had been under “tremendous pressure” from the United States for its pro-peace position, “and the pro-war Brussels bureaucrats were also giving us a thrashing”. But over the past six months, the “pro-war, anti-migration and pro-family forces” have gained a majority in the Western world, he said. Hungary’s ruling parties secured a resounding victory in the EP elections, established the Patriots of Europe party, becoming essential players in the legislative body, and in the United States “our brother-in-arms” Donald Trump was elected president, Orbán said. He said the Hungarian economy was set for a “fantastic year” in 2025, saying Hungary would emerge stronger “from the shadow of the war that has been going on for three years now”.

Hungarian Sovereignty Protection Office flags another dangerous organization allegedly serving US Interests
Hungary’s Ökotárs Foundation is “the local distribution centre” of the “political pressure network”, the Sovereignty Protection Office said on Monday.
The office’s statement said the Ökotárs Foundation had been “distributing funds and building networks” for foreign pressure groups in Hungary since 1994.
Most of the foundation’s revenues come from abroad, it said. Initially, Ökotárs had received funding from American foundations like the Ford, Rockefeller and Soros Foundation via a central and eastern European network called the Environmental Partnership Association, and its financing model gradually changed following Hungary’s European Union accession, the statement said.
The office said that most of Ökotárs’s revenues today come from funds allocated by the European Commission, adding that the EC has earmarked 1.5 billion euros towards the “direct financing of political pressure groups” through its Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values (CERV) scheme.
The Hungarian Sovereignty Protection Office said Anna Donáth, a former MEP of the opposition Momentum Movement, had played a key role in developing this financing model. Over the last two years, close to 18 million euros in CERV money has been transferred to Hungary, close to three-quarters of which had gone to “political pressure groups”, the office said. The Ökotárs Foundation received 3.3 million euros from those funds, which it distributed among “organisations belonging to the foreign pressure network like Amnesty International Hungary, the Helsinki Committee, the Hungarian Civil Liberties Union (TASZ)”, the statement said, adding that investigative reporting outfit Átlátszó and news outlet 444 had also received “significant amounts of money”.
The office said Ökotárs had also distributed funds disbursed by the the US embassy in Budapest. It said outgoing US Ambassador David Pressman had announced a call for applications for direct grants to “network actors” in the autumn of 2023, with the Ökotárs Foundation having been put in charge of distributing the funds. More than 115 million forints (EUR 281,000) in US funding was distributed by January 2024 among outlets like Telex, Klubradio, Nyugat.hu, 444, Magyar Narancs, Atlatszo and Tilos Radio, it said.
The Sovereignty Protection Office said it wanted to alert state authorities to the “grave risk” it said “the Ökotárs Foundation and the network covering the entire region” posed to Hungary’s sovereignty.

Spending New Year’s Eve in Budapest? Fireworks will be banned in touristy district – MAP
Last year’s New Year’s Eve in Budapest highlighted the dangers of uncontrolled fireworks, with chaotic scenes at Vörösmarty Square leading to injuries and public outcry. In response, District 5 has introduced a strict ban on pyrotechnic devices in high-traffic areas, aiming to ensure safer celebrations this year.
Last year’s dangerous celebrations
As we have reported HERE, last year’s New Year’s Eve in Budapest turned dangerous as uncontrolled fireworks in Vörösmarty Square caused chaos and injuries among the celebrating crowds. Footage aired by RTL showed fireworks launched in a cordoned-off area without oversight, leading to accidents where fireworks landed in the crowd. One woman suffered burns to her hand and had her coat catch fire. The lack of regulation and authority control over pyrotechnic use has raised serious safety concerns, prompting Alex Gábor Kovács, leader of Tiéd a Belváros, to call for stricter rules on the sale and use of fireworks to prevent such incidents in the future.
A safer New Year’s Eve in Budapest
As HVG reports, Budapest’s District 5 has introduced a strict ban on pyrotechnic devices in high-traffic areas for New Year’s Eve, with fines of up to HUF 200,000 (EUR 488.77) for violators. Key locations such as Vörösmarty Square, Erzsébet Square, and St. Stephen’s Square in front of the Basilica will be firework-free zones. The decree, passed unanimously by the district’s representative body, also extends to other busy areas in the city centre, aiming to ensure safety during the festive period.
The affected areas
The decision comes after last year’s New Year’s Eve celebrations saw fireworks dangerously exploding among crowds in downtown Budapest, prompting public outcry. The ban, initially proposed by opposition leader Alex Gábor Kovács, was formalised by the district’s Fidesz mayor, Péter Szentgyörgyvölgyi. The new rules prohibit the use of fireworks in categories 1, 2, and 3 within the designated areas from 6 PM on 28 December to 6 AM on 1 January, with stricter enforcement planned in collaboration with the Budapest Police Headquarters. Here is a map of the affected areas:
Firecrackers remain prohibited
While the ban only applies to District 5, firecrackers are still permitted in other parts of Hungary under existing national laws. Firecrackers remain prohibited nationwide year-round, with penalties reaching HUF 150,000 (EUR 366.58) for violations. Unused or defective third-category fireworks must be returned to distributors within five days after New Year’s Eve. These measures aim to balance festive celebrations with public safety, marking a significant change in the celebration of New Year’s Eve in Budapest.

Future president of Hungary’s National Bank reveals key objectives and his team
The primary goal of Hungary’s National Bank is achieving and maintaining price stability; it is committed to its 3pc inflation target, Finance Minister Mihály Varga said on Monday before parliament’s economy committee as a candidate to lead the NBH.
The independence of the NBH is guaranteed by both the act on the Central Bank and the effective regulatory system of the European Union, he said. At the same time, he added that for sustainable development and a predictable economic environment, the central bank cooperates with the government and domestic and international organizations with mutual respect for their respective mandates.
Varga said that under his leadership the NBH will treat performing classic central bank responsibilities as priorities while activities outside of this will be moderated. At the meeting, Varga introduced his future central bank team members but did not disclose their expected positions. The team will include Péter Benő Banai, the state secretary for the budget, Government Debt Management Agency (AKK) head Zoltán Kurali, and state-owned Hungarian Development Bank (MFB) CEO Levente Sipos-Tompa. The committee supported the appointment of Varga as NBH Governor by a majority vote.
The committee supported the appointment of Varga as NBH Governor by a majority vote. The minister said his commitment to maintaining the 3pc inflation target is a clear and unambiguous message that helps anchor the expectations of consumers, businesses, and financial market participants. Speaking about the prospects of the Hungarian economy, Varga said the economy is on a strong foundation, inflation is within the target range of the central bank, the current account is expected this year to have a 2pc surplus compared to GDP.
The liquidity of households, companies, and the banking system is robust, and the financial system is stable. The basis for economic growth in 2025 is rising consumption, expanding retail lending, growing construction order stock, and new manufacturing capacities coming online. Monetary policy can best contribute to growth by maintaining persistently low inflation and financial market stability, he said. A stable exchange rate and financial markets are priorities for ensuring price stability. Stable and predictable exchange rate is needed for sustainable economic growth.
Varga said that under his leadership the NBH will give a decisive response to risks threatening the financial transmission system, financial stability and sustainable economic development. Varga said he will place strong emphasis on the management discipline of the central bank and ensuring that the central bank operates in a transparent and professional manner. Responding to questions regarding the central bank’s foundations and real estate assets, Varga said that the situation will be reviewed after he takes office in March.

Major overhaul ahead: Hungary’s draft regulation on vehicle fees
The Ministry of Construction and Transport has prepared a new draft regulation that will significantly change the fees for the registration and technical inspection of road vehicles in Hungary. The draft cites inflation and rising costs for the authorities, while aiming to improve environmental protection and road safety.
According to Portfolio, the main reasons for the fee increase are inflationary pressures and the rising costs of regulatory investigations. The proposal also emphasises the environmental aspect: part of the money raised would be used to improve environmental systems and road safety programmes. Such projects include, for example, improving air quality and increasing energy efficiency. These measures could contribute to a sustainable transport system, according to the draft’s authors.
Significant fee increases in technical audits
One of the most important elements of the draft is the level of the fee increases. For example, the price of a general approval would rise from HUF 178 900 (EUR 437) to HUF 242 100 (EUR 592), an increase of more than 35%. Equally significant changes will affect the approval of vehicle parts and conversion procedures. Fees for ADR permits, or permits for vehicles carrying dangerous goods, will also increase dramatically, by up to 39%. The increases cover a wide range of segments, including single and serial vehicles, as well as vehicles produced in a multi-stage production process.
A detailed overview of the price changes
The restructuring of fees affects a number of areas. Some prominent examples are:
Serial registration permit: will increase from HUF 178 900 (EUR 437) to HUF 234 000 (EUR 572), an increase of 30.8%.
Serial variation approval: the new fee is HUF 144 600 (EUR 353), up from HUF 109 000 (EUR 266), an increase of more than 32%.
Individual marketing authorisation: from HUF 22 800 (EUR 55) to HUF 30 600 (EUR 74), an increase of 34%.
Replacement of the “technical file”: from HUF 580 (EUR 1,4) to HUF 900 (EUR 2,2), an increase of 55%.
These changes will affect not only private individuals but also companies, especially those involved in the transport of dangerous goods.
The draft regulation is currently under public consultation, which will end on the 19th of December 2024. The adopted regulation is expected to enter into force on the 1st of February 2025 and the changes will apply to subsequent proceedings. The draft also includes rules on the refund of fees: if the client makes an additional payment or the procedure is not started, the amount paid will be refunded within a maximum of eight days.
What do these changes mean for car owners?
The planned fee increases could place a significant financial burden on both individuals and businesses. The increase in the cost of registration and conversion procedures could be particularly sensitive for those planning to buy new vehicles or convert existing ones. And the increase in the cost of ADR permits could put industrial and logistics operators in a difficult situation.
The new draft regulation will change the system for the registration and technical inspection of road vehicles in several ways. The measures are intended to improve road safety and environmental protection, but the scale of the fee increases could place a heavy burden on those affected. The public consultation is still open for comments on the proposal, the final form of which could have a long-term impact on the regulation of road transport in Hungary.

Hungarian foreign minister: Not even the approaching Christmas holidays can dampen the warlike mood in Brussels
“Not even the approaching Christmas holidays can dampen the warlike mood in Brussels,” the foreign minister said on Facebook on Monday.
Péter Szijjártó posted his remarks ahead of the last meeting of his European Union counterparts in Brussels this year, saying proposals on the agenda for the meeting reflected that “the majority still does not see the new realities”. “While an opportunity for achieving a ceasefire and exchanging prisoners of war has been tabled, they still want to reallocate over 6 billion euros for weapons to Ukraine,” Szijjártó said.
“They are pressing Ukraine to send 18-year-old boys to the front, and sanction Georgian officials just because Georgian voters dared to elect a sovereigntist government,” Szijjártó said. The minister said he anticipated “a great fight” at the meeting, but added that “the Hungarian government insists on its pro-peace stance: Ukraine calls for a ceasefire rather than more weapons.”
Poll results: Only three parties would enter Hungarian Parliament if election were held today
The ruling alliance of Fidesz and the Christian Democrats would win a 61 percent majority in parliament if elections were held this Sunday, according to a fresh poll by the pro-government Nézőpont Institute.
Only three parties would enter Hungarian Parliament, if…
In December, 38 percent (2.9 million) of the total adult population eligible to vote (about 7.67 million) sympathised with Fidesz, 25 percent with the Tisza Party (1.9 million), the same as in the previous month.
Among those who are certain or likely to vote, Fidesz-KDNP’s list would capture 47 percent of the vote in a general election. Fidesz’s nearest opposition rival, the Tisza Party, would get 37 percent, with the leftist Democratic Coalition just clearing the 5 percent threshold for seats in parliament.
According to Nézőpont’s model, Fidesz would win 74 electoral district races, giving it 121 seats in the 199-seat parliament. Tisza would win the remaining 32 constituencies, giving it 71 seats, with DK winning 6 and the ethnic German minority 1 seat.

New constituency boundaries
The full picture also includes the fact that the percentages of the “most likely list result” are not the same as the distribution of seats in parliament, as individual constituencies play a key role in the Hungarian electoral system. The Nézőpont Institute has therefore modelled how the distribution of seats would evolve “this Sunday” after a hypothetical parliamentary election, taking into account historical electoral trends at the constituency level and the new constituency boundaries.
Taking the voting population as a whole, the ruling parties are backed by 38 percent of the electorate, with Tisza on 25 percent. The phone poll was carried out between December 9 and 11, with a sample of 1,000 adults.

What is wrong with Hungarian legislation? 11-year-old Tamás Till’s killer might walk free
The long-unsolved murder of Tamás Till, who disappeared 24 years ago, has taken a significant turn with the confession of János F., now 40. Despite his admission, legal complexities regarding his age at the time of the crime raise questions about his liability. Prosecutors argue that the statute of limitations for aggravated homicide has not expired, sparking hopes for a conviction. As the case unfolds, the Till family seeks justice amid ongoing legal uncertainties.
The tragic case of Tamás Till
As we reported HERE, the long-standing mystery surrounding the murder of Tamás Till, a Hungarian boy who disappeared 24 years ago at the age of 11, has finally been resolved. The Bács-Kiskun County Police announced that the killer, identified as János F., was just 16 years old at the time of the crime. Tamás’s remains were discovered this summer, buried in cement on a farm in Baja, revealing fractures in his ribs, skull, and spine. Following extensive investigations, including interviews with over 40 witnesses, János F. confessed to the murder during a re-interrogation on 28 November.
He admitted to luring Tamás Till to the farm under false pretences and attacking him without reason. Despite his confession, János F.’s criminal liability had expired due to his age at the time of the offence, allowing him to leave freely after questioning. The case, which had remained one of Hungary’s most high-profile unsolved crimes since Tamás’s disappearance in May 2000, involved numerous false leads and tragic developments, including the suicides of key figures linked to the case.
Possible motive behind the gruesome murder?
As Infostart writes, legal representatives suggest that sexual motives may have driven the murder. However, the exact motive remains unclear since János F. did not disclose it during his confession. The lawyer representing the Till family argued that the nature of the crime—marked by brutality and a lack of apparent motive—points towards sexual motivation, as there was no history between the victim and the accused.
The legal proceedings are complicated by questions regarding the statute of limitations for aggravated homicide, with prosecutors asserting that it has not expired despite János F. being a juvenile at the time of the crime. This situation raises concerns about how he will be held accountable in court, particularly given that he will be tried under juvenile sentencing practices despite being 40 years old now. Tamás’s mother expressed her hope that this development might bring some accountability after years of grief, stating, “Maybe it’s better now that this perpetrator (…) can be convicted.”
The prosecution’s view
On 12 December, the Prosecution Service of Hungary shared in a statement that the prosecution’s position is that in the case of non-expiring crimes, the calculation of the statute of limitations is conceptually excluded. In the ongoing criminal proceedings concerning the aggravated murder of Tamás Till, committed on 28 May 2000, the public prosecutor’s office has concluded—based on the interpretation of laws applicable at the time of the crime and those currently in force—that for non-expiring crimes, such as aggravated murder, the statute of limitations cannot be applied.
Consequently, if someone commits aggravated murder as a minor, it cannot expire in the same way as if an adult committed it. For these reasons, the Bács-Kiskun County Prosecutor’s Office, which oversees legality, has called upon the investigative authority to apprehend and interrogate the individual suspected of committing the crime. According to the newest information on the case, the Bács-Kiskun County Prosecutor’s Office has requested the arrest of a man suspected of murdering Tamás Till.

FM Szijjártó: Few countries did more than Hungary for peaceful settlement of Russia-Ukraine conflict
There are very few countries that have made more efforts than Hungary for a peaceful settlement of the Russia-Ukraine conflict over the past one thousand days, the foreign minister said on Sunday.
The war has been going on for more than a thousand days and Hungary’s position has not changed ever since it broke out, Péter Szijjártó told public broadcaster Kossuth rádió. Hungary’s position, which has since been proven true, is that this war has no solution on the battlefield where there is only death, suffering and more destruction, he said.
He said that the war claiming human lives in the ranges of a million had not opened the eyes of everyone, adding that weapon deliveries had not changed the balance of power. The Russian army is forging ahead and occupying more and more territories, Szijjártó said.
“The only solution is to be found solely at the negotiating table; there must be talks, but for peace talks a ceasefire in needed first,” the foreign minister said.
Szijjártó noted Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s proposal of a ceasefire and an exchange of prisoners in humanitarian steps with the upcoming days of the Christmas celebrations taken into consideration.
He also noted the prime minister’s phone conversation with the Russian president earlier this week that lasted for more than an hour.
Szijjártó said that as Hungary’s foreign minister he had informed his Ukrainian counterpart as well as the head of the Ukrainian president’s office [about that phone conversation] asking them to arrange a phone conversation between Viktor Orban and the Ukrainian president which he said was rejected “in a bit uneasy, yet cultured manner”.
“Hungary has tried to do everything [possible] under its mission for peace in the past half year, even more than what could be or would have been expected from a country this size,” Szijjarto said.
“We have made every possible effort under our EU presidency in the past six months to use the presidency for a good cause, for a ceasefire, for starting peace talks,” Szijjártó said.
Talking about a threatening email received by Hungary’s embassy in Paris on Saturday, the minister said that it had been sent from a country neighbouring Hungary and contained a picture of a bomb.
The minister said his colleagues in Paris had immediately notified the foreign ministry’s security centre. French authorities arrived at the scene quickly and very professionally with appropriate technology and search dogs. As no explosive device was found, the embassy staff returned to their offices to continue their work, Szijjártó said.
He said that in his assessment “the world is in an especially dangerous situation today”, with armed conflicts going on at several places, terrorist attacks taking place, terrorist organisations carrying out coup attempts”. “In this situation every threat needs to be taken seriously,” the foreign minister said. “And we have done just that, as the safety, health and the life of our colleagues is most important to us,” he said. He also emphasized that “everything at the embassy has returned to normal,” adding that security regulations had been reinforced.
On another topic, Szijjártó called it a step “less worthy of allies” that the United States had put Gazprombank on a sanctions list as “it was clear which countries in the central European and south-eastern European regions buy energy from Russia due to physical, infrastructural and geographical realities, and it is also clear that they pay through Gazprombank“.
The minister said they had worked hard with the Slovaks, Serbians, Turks and Bulgarians in recent weeks to find a legal solution that will continue to guarantee the security of their energy supply without violating US sanctions, and they have succeeded.
Answering questions about how they managed to disperse a false media report that Bashar al-Assad’s airplane had landed in Budapest, he said that “it was a very rough situation” and it was incredibly dangerous “to involve Hungary in such a red hot conflict”.
“It is possible that this situation arose as part of an orchestrated secret service operation that posed an extraordinary threat to Hungary, so I believe that it is necessary to investigate as thoroughly as possible where this started, who participated in it, and those who participated why they did so.
“Putting Hungary in danger cannot go unpunished,” he said.

Budapest Airport at Europe’s top in traffic growth, will enter a new golden age, says CEO
The European arm of Airports Council International (ACI Europe) ranked Ferenc Liszt International Airport as the fastest growing European airport in October in terms of passenger traffic. Passenger numbers in the first ten months of the year at Budapest Airport, powered by VINCI Airports, exceeded the total for the previous year, and the company expects similarly dynamic growth in the future. The airport’s new owners and the company’s management team are prepared to develop and expand the airport, in order to adapt the infrastructure to the expected passenger numbers and provide high-quality services.
Passenger traffic at Ferenc Liszt International Airport was 19.8% higher in October 2024 than in the same month of the previous year, making it the fastest growing airport in Europe, according to ACI Europe. Of the 20 airports surveyed, only seven recorded double-digit growth in October. With this growth, Budapest airport overtook major European airports, bud.hu wrote.
Budapest Airport has set individual records in each of the first ten months of this year, surpassing the passenger traffic figures of the record months in 2019, and by the end of October, total passenger traffic had surpassed the twelve months of 2023. Between January and October this year, the highest numbers of passengers flew from Budapest to London, Istanbul and Milan.
The airport operator expects significant growth in the future as well, and accordingly, the owners and management have started to prepare the airport for the increased passenger traffic and the expected developments.
Francois Berisot, the CEO of Budapest Airport, said, “The country’s appeal is attracting more and more people to explore Budapest and Hungary, which is clearly reflected in the airport’s passenger traffic. Every month has set an individual record this year and we expect similar growth in passenger numbers in the future as well. The owners of Budapest Airport are committed to developing the airport, with the first major milestone being the completion of detailed plans for Terminal 3 next year, and preparations for construction works also continuing. The upcoming developments will ensure that Ferenc Liszt International Airport will soon enter a new golden age, offering a better than ever environment for those arriving in and departing from Hungary.”

Odd sculpture of Hungarian freedom fighter Lajos Kossuth with hussar neck tattoo in Cuba raises questions – PHOTOS
A bold and baffling tribute to Lajos Kossuth has appeared in Havana, turning heads and stirring debate. Crafted by Munkácsy Prize-winning artist Gábor Benő Pogány, the unconventional statue features a long-necked figure adorned with patriotic flourishes, blending symbolism with an unusual aesthetic. Its surprising placement and timing have left many questioning whether this curious homage to Hungary’s revolutionary hero is more puzzling than poignant.
Sculpture of Lajos Kossuth in Havana
As 24.hu reports, in early November, Havana saw the unveiling of a striking and unconventional sculpture near the beach: a portrait of Hungarian freedom fighter Lajos Kossuth by Munkácsy Prize-winning artist Gábor Benő Pogány. The piece, which has drawn surprise and scepticism, features a bearded figure with a long neck adorned with a patriotic tattoo, resembling neither Kossuth nor traditional artistic styles. Some have compared it to PEZ dispensers, questioning its relevance in Cuba and linking it to a recent pattern of controversial works commissioned by those close to power.
Cuban FM in Hungary
The monument’s timing has also raised eyebrows, coinciding with the first visit of a Cuban foreign minister to Hungary since 1983. Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla received an honorary doctorate and signed cooperation agreements with Hungarian officials during his visit. The new statue appears to replace a bronze predecessor that mysteriously disappeared from Havana’s Lenin Park years ago, now reimagined and donated by a folk art school. Speculation lingers over the motivations behind the installation, as the artist reportedly received an undisclosed sum for a work that many consider more puzzling than celebratory.
What was the idea behind the sculpture?
According to Szoljon, the unveiling of the Lajos Kossuth sculpture in Havana has sparked curiosity about its design and context. Sculptor Gábor Benő Pogány described the work as a “main column,” symbolising Lajos Kossuth as a “columnar” leader, with the piece crafted from frost-resistant ceramic—a curious choice given Cuba’s warm climate and lack of freezing temperatures. The statue, featuring hussars around its neck and standing twice life-size, was inaugurated in a ceremony attended largely by Hungarian officials, including Fidesz MP János Halász and Hungarian Academy of Arts vice-president Zoltán Rátóti. Despite its political overtones, Pogány distanced himself from the accompanying fanfare, explaining his absence not as a statement but simply due to his aversion to air travel.
Who was Lajos Kossuth?
Lajos Kossuth was a prominent Hungarian statesman, lawyer, and revolutionary leader, renowned for his pivotal role in the Hungarian Revolution of 1848–1849. A powerful orator and advocate for independence, he served as finance minister in the Batthyány government before becoming governor-president and head of the National Defence Commission, effectively acting as Hungary’s leader during its fight against Habsburg rule. Kossuth’s efforts to establish a democratic and independent Hungary made him a national hero, and his legacy endures as a symbol of freedom and self-determination in Hungarian history.

Miracle in Vienna: Hungary’s women’s handball team won bronze! – PHOTOS, VIDEO
Hungary won 25-24 against world champion and Olympic silver winner France in today’s match for the bronze at the 2024 EURO Women’s Handball Championship. The last time a Hungarian women’s handball team could secure a medal was 12 years ago.
Hungary’s women’s handball bronze
According to index.hu the Hungarian team fought fiercely against France in the Wiener Stadthalle in Austria’s capital. Austria, Hungary and Switzerland co-hosted the championships. The matches in Hungary were held in Debrecen.
The victory did not come out of the blue since the Hungarian team could defeat the French in Toulon on 24 October in a friendly match (30-27). That was the first time after 14 years that the Hungarian team overcame the French. Thankfully, the “new trend” continued today.
Hungary is considered to be a successful nation in women’s handball. We already won the world championships once and the EHF EURO title 14 years ago. Moreover, the Hungarian team bagged altogether 16 medals. Hungary’s team raised the trophy in 2000, joining the club of only five nations that have won the Women’s EHF EURO.
Norway could only defeat Hungary in the semi-final after key goalkeeper Szemerey was sidelined with a minor injury. Thankfully, she could return for today’s match.
Match highlights
The official website of the competition highlighted the following from the bronze match:
“The goalkeepers stood out in the first half in particular, with France’s Laura Glauser and Hungary’s Zsófi Szemerey saving at over 40 per cent in that period; while Glauser came off with 11 saves at 35 per cent for Hatadou Sako at the 50-minute mark, Szemerey counted 13 stops and was key in crunch time.
France opened the first two-goal distance of the game at 5:3 just past the 10-minute mark, before Hungary took the upper hand, always scoring first or leading, from the end of the first quarter of the match until the final buzzer.
With an assist from EHF EURO 2024 All-star Team right back Klujber to a goal from All-star right wing Gyori-Lukács, Hungary created the first three-goal scoreline at 10:7 in the 25th minute, but France came back for a difference of one at half-time.
Hungary again created a temporary three-goal advantage early in the second half and kept the edge as a thrilling match unfolded, but when the final 10 minutes began, it was still anyone’s game at 20:20.
Klujber’s nine goals took her overall tally at the EHF EURO 2024 to 60, seeming to cement her place in first on the top scorer list — but the individual title can only be confirmed beyond doubt after the final between Norway and Denmark.”
Here is a highlights video:
“It’s almost impossible to describe how I feel right now. This is the best Christmas present I have ever gotten. And I’m so proud of our team. We work really hard and today we went and fought from the first second to the last one. I think that the key was our team spirit”, Petra Vámos, Hungary’s centre-back, told the press after the bronze match.

Special LEGO Mercedes cars placed at Budapest’s Fashion Street – PHOTOS, VIDEO
“From beautiful copper fronts to world-famous brands and the best views of Budapest, you can find everything on Fashion Street”, the introduction on the street’s website reads. Exceptional LEGO tram in Budapest’s heart
We wrote about the magical life-sized LEGO tram of the Deák Ferenc Square in THIS article before. The LEGO tram was built with nearly 1.8 million colourful bricks, an extraordinary masterpiece of fusion of creativity, playfulness, and engineering that’s lighting up the Hungarian capital. It not only represents Budapest’s rich tram traditions but also the everyday magic that LEGO products can give us.
The LEGO tram is also exceptional because there is no other Lego block building in the world that is this big and even moves. The life-size Lego vehicles we know so far have been made using Lego Technic flexible elements. This tram, on the other hand, is built using only classic Lego blocks, which is a particular challenge when it comes to moving it. You may check out some photos and more details about the magical structure displayed on the Deák Ferenc Square available for everyone to visit in THIS article.
Fashion Street connects Vörösmarty Christmas market with the LEGO tram
The Fashion Street of Budapest connects Deák Ferenc Square with one of Budapest’s most beautiful Christmas markets on Vörösmarty Square. When you walk on the street, window-shopping in some leading fashion brands, you should not miss a new spectacle born from the cooperation of Mercedes and LEGO.
Brick Galaxy, one of the oldest Hungarian LEGO fan groups, created an installation there and inaugurated it on 6 December with the help of Zoltán Szujó and Santa Claus. Santa arrives in Hungary on 6 December, bringing mostly candies to kids. On 24 December, Baby Jesus brings presents for children in Hungary.
Unique LEGO Mercedes cars on Fashion Street
As Kreatív Online points out, there is a Mercedes-Benz model under a glass trellis, which you can compare to a realistic LEGO twin built by the group. On the car’s bonnet, there is also a LEGO® Technic™ Mercedes-Benz G 500 PROFESSIONAL Line model.
Péter Oláh, the marketing director of LEGO Hungária Ltd, told Kreatív Online that the exhibition not only celebrates the encounter of two great brands but also shows the unlimited power and infinite creativity of LEGO bricks. He added that trustworthiness and quality were crucial characteristics of LEGO and Mercedes alike.
The Human Telex Advertising & Event team highlighted that they installed the glass trellis on Budapest’s Fashion Street for the third time. They added it was fantastic to see that the idea could take shape and was realised in such a short time.
