Hungarian experts help in Uzbekistan
Agricultural ties between Hungary and Uzbekistan are “continuously strengthening”, Agriculture Minister Istvan Nagy said after meeting Aziz Voitov, his Uzbek counterpart, in Samarkand on Wednesday.
Nagy said Hungarian and Uzbek companies were in an “active and dynamic” communication.
The minister said both countries saw food security as a priority while also seeking joint answers to challenges posed by climate change and frequent droughts. Irrigation systems in the region could be modernised with the help of Hungarian experts, he said.
Another focus was scientific cooperation, of which student and reasearcher exchange is a good tool, he said. He said the two countries should cooperate not only in higher education but at highschool level, too.

Kyrgyzstan and Hungary are strengthening cooperation in seed grain production, agriculture and animal breeding, Agriculture Minister István Nagy said on Tuesday, after talks with his Kyrgyz counterpart Askarbek Djanybekov.
Nagy told a joint press conference after the meeting in Bishkek that the sector was looking for “answers in a quickly changing world” through joint projects that would boost all partners’ economies.
Kyrgyzstan’s seed grain imports jumped tenfold this year, Nagy said. Five Hungarian hybrids are already registered in the country, and another 12 are slated to be, he said. Hungary is ready to sell seed grain or provide the technology to produce seed grain in Kyrgyzstan, he said.
Agriculture and food production in both countries could also benefit from the Hungarian-Kyrgyz development fund, he said. Safe energy supplies are a strategic issue, and a renewal of the Kyrgyz animal breeding sector could have a key role, he added.
Water management and technologies with low water demand should be developed further in the country, he said.
During his visit in Kyrgyzstan, Nagy also visited the Kyrgyz National Agrarian University , where he met the rector and highlighted the importance of partnership in science. Exchange programmes for Kyrgyz and Hungarian researchers and students are ongoing, he said.

The SBA Chairperson also noted that the emirate’s prestigious cultural platforms like the Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF), further advance communication between nations, making the global cultural landscape more diverse and vibrant.
Sharjah International Book Fair 2023
These statements were made by the Sharjah Book Authority (SBA) on the occasion of the announcement of the Republic of South Korea as Guest of Honour at the upcoming 42nd edition of SIBF, which will be held from November 1-12 in Expo Centre Sharjah.
The international event provides an unparalleled platform to engage with a diverse group of writers, thinkers, and cultural figures worldwide.
South Korea’s nomination for the emirate’s biggest cultural event is poised to celebrate the richness of the centuries-old Korean culture and heritage, as well as familiarise SIBF’s guests and visitors with the latest developments in their cultural, literary and creative landscape. The pioneering ways in which South Korea has modernised its cultural landscape by being strongly rooted in its past, has garnered immense attention and popularity across the Arab region and the world.
The republic’s selection as SIBF’s GoH for the upcoming edition also further solidifies the longstanding cultural ties between Sharjah and South Korea, which celebrated the emirate as their Guest of Honour at the 65th edition of the Seoul International Book Fair this June.
Commenting on SIBF’s global cultural importance, Sheikha Bodour stated,
“Thanks to the guidance of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed AlQasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, SIBF has established itself as an exemplary Arab accomplishment, and we are elevating its role to enrich global culture. It has served as a platform for publishers, book industry professionals, and libraries to flourish, build partnerships, and strengthen relationships with their target audience. Moreover, the event has broadened the horizons for newer developments in Arab culture, enabling it to reach broader segments of society.”
For his part, HE Ahmed bin Rakad Al Ameri, CEO of Sharjah Book Authority (SBA), said: “Celebrating the cultural experience of South Korea embodies the vision of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah, which has transformed the emirate into a prominent hub of culture and education in the region and around the world. SIBF is designed on HH Sheikh Dr. Sultan Al Qasimi’s belief that books and knowledge create the strongest and most sustainable foundations for longstanding cultural dialogue between nations and peoples. It also opens new avenues for partnerships and collaboration between the UAE’s and Arab world’s knowledge market with their global counterparts”.
Guest of Honour – Sharjah International Book Fair:
“This November, South Korean culture, history, customs & practices, and their scientific and technological advancements will meet Emirati culture’s authentic Arab values, rich history, and heritage. This represents an opportunity for the public, publishers, library owners, and book institutions to directly engage with a distinguished culture of the far east. SIBF serves as a platform to strengthen their connections with local and global markets. At the same time, our Guest of Honour programme has served as an ideal gateway for new cultural accomplishments like the establishment of institutes, signing of partnerships, and the launching of initiatives over the past years that brought Sharjah and the UAE closer to nations worldwide,” he added.
The South Korean pavilion at SIBF 2023 will present a rich cultural programme of activities and events that reflect the aesthetics and diversity of Korean culture, which is particularly popular amongst the youth. Through panel discussions, workshops, culinary demonstrations, and artistic performances, visitors will have the chance to learn about the history, civilisation and arts of South Korea. The pavilion will also host several authors and cultural figures from South Korea who will share their experiences and perspectives with the audience.

Kingdom of Saudi Arabia envisions Riyadh Expo 2030
There is a fierce competition among the three candidate countries for the hosting right of the World Expo 2030, however, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia undoubtedly leads the way being the strongest entry in its class. Are you wondering what this mega event is all about? And on what does the Middle Eastern powerhouse base its unshakeable confidence that their tender should be the chosen one? In this post, we have gathered the most important snippets of information regarding the greatest exhibition of the globe.
As Arab News reported, earlier in July, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman visited Paris to grace the Kingdom’s official reception for Riyadh’s bid to host the World Expo 2030 with his presence. The high-profile event welcomed delegates from the 179 member states of the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) – the organisation in charge of the overseeing and coordination of the World Expos.
As their official website informs us, World Expos are global gatherings of nations committed to finding tangible solutions to the pressing challenges of our modern times by offering a journey inside a universal theme through engaging and immersive activities. Since 1851, when the very first such mega event was held in London, the greatest exhibition of the globe has provided its host cities with unparalleled opportunities and unrivalled world-scale exposure.
Riyadh Expo 2030 on the cards?
Saudi Arabia is confident to win the bid against Italy and South Korea at the upcoming general assembly of the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) slated for November. As part of the Middle Eastern country’s desirous efforts at securing the hosting right for the 2030 World Expo scheduled for 1 May to 31 October 2030, the Kingdom unveiled its pioneering plan to educate and entertain the over 40 million forecasted visitors, in addition to the 1 billion virtual followers, with the latest metaverse technologies. This state-of-the-art technology merges physical reality and digital virtual worlds in a multiuser environment and has been unprecedented in the history of the expo.
Through Expo 2030 Riyadh, Saudi Arabia would invite all the participating countries to work together on changing the course of our planet towards a brighter future. In harmony with this ambitious imperative, the Kingdom brought forward the following theme for the World Expo 2030: “The Era of Change: Leading the Planet to a Foresighted Tomorrow.”
Riyadh is investing in sustainable development, environmental infrastructure, education, and culture, in line with the sub-themes of #RiyadhExpo2030 – ‘A Different Tomorrow’; ‘Climate Action’; and ‘Prosperity for All’. pic.twitter.com/Irh6LFVBXF

Unparalleled global exposure
It is no secret that the international event provides an outstanding platform for the hosting venues to present their unique and distinctive domestic values and their recent high-scale accomplishments to a global audience. The Kingdom prides itself for its rich cultural and historical heritage, fascinating landscape, unique architectural marvels as well as the immense economic and social transformation it has achieved since the launch of its Vision 2030 on 25 April in 2016.
Ultimately, the exhibition would offer visitors a valuable insight into the major mega projects of Riyadh, including the Riyadh Sports Boulevard, King Salman Park, Diriyah Gate, Qiddiya Amusement Park and the still-in-progress King Salman International Airport, which would serve as the arrival point for the visitors of the exhibition, thanks to its close proximity to the venue.
The World Expo has always been regarded as a highly prestigious event all around the globe. And the tradition will no doubt carry on in the future. We are eager to see which candidate will come out as the winner, who will be granted the prestigious opportunity to host the World Expo 2023.
The most recent World Expo took place in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, between 1 October 2021 and 31 March 2022 while the next World Expo will be held in Osaka, Kansai, Japan between 13 April and 13 October 2025.
Here is why tourists from the US and Asia love Hungary
Inbound tourism from the US, South Korea and China grew significantly in the first seven months of 2023 compared to 2022. To attract tourists more efficiently, the Hungarian Tourism Agency regularly examines what tourists from these particular countries are looking for and how they travel.
Increased number of tourists
Turizmus.com writes that tourism was deeply affected by the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, people have gained back the possibility to visit overseas countries. According to the data of the National Tourism Data Centre, visitor arrivals from the US increased by 35%, from South Korea by 290%, and from China by 271% by the end of July of 2023 compared to 2022. The research of the Hungarian Tourism Agency reveals that people from distant countries are more interested in sightseeing and culture than average.
Tourists from the US show a particular interest in Hungary’s gastronomic specialities and thermal spas. These unique traits of the country are what differentiates Hungary from its competitors in terms of tourism. Many people from South Korea come for business or even to work or study. Meanwhile, millions of people from China can be moved by a TV show. A good example is the Chinese reality show “Chinese Restaurant”, on which we reported HERE earlier.
Travel habits
People aged 45 and over account for almost half of the visitors from the US. Despite that, the proportion of younger couples, families and incentive travellers is also growing. From South Korea, the 25-44 age group accounts for 52% of visitors, while the same age group makes up 63% of visitors from China. While the proportion of men and women is balanced among the US and Chinese visitors, more than 60% of South Korean tourists are male. What visitors from these three countries have in common is that they usually stay in hotels (65-70% of visitors). These tourists opt for four-star hotels or even more luxurious accommodations. Tourists from South Korea and the United States are among the highest spenders. Americans spend one and a half times more than average. Meanwhile, South Korean travellers spend almost 10% more than average.
The most popular destinations
Most tourists come to Hungary to explore Budapest. 87% of American visitors, 68% of South Korean travellers and 79% of Chinese tourists came to the Hungarian capital. However, the number of travellers who are seeking to discover the countryside and other towns in Hungary, is also growing. In May and July, the most popular destinations for American tourists were Vörösmarty Square and the Fisherman’s Bastion in the capital. Also, many have visited the Basilica in Esztergom, Tokaj and Siófok in the countryside. The most frequented places for South Koreans were the Parliament, the Fisherman’s Bastion and St. Stephen’s Basilica. Beaches of Velence and Siófok were also among the top choices of South Korean tourists. Chinese travellers also preferred the Parliament and the Fisherman’s Bastion, as well as Margaret Island. In the countryside, Széchenyi Square in Pécs and Szentendre were the most attractive destinations.
Government outraged for anti-Christian violence in Pakistan
The Hungarian government condemns instigation against religious or ethnic communities, as well as any actions violating the dignity of members of those groups, Tristan Azbej, state secretary at the foreign ministry, said on Facebook on Friday.
Referring to recent attacks against Christians in Pakistan’s Jaranwala region, the state secretary said the violence “could not be justified by any argument”. He welcomed remarks by the acting prime minister of Pakistan firmly condemning the attacks and pledging to bringing the perpetrators to court.
“We are firmly committed to promoting a dialogue between different religions and cultures,” the state secretary said. He expressed “sincere solidarity with Pakistan’s attacked Christian community”. The Hungarian government supports needy Christian and other communities in other countries through the Hungary Helps programme, he said.

This is why Asian investors love Hungary, but it is bad news for us
The company called Kumho Tire, which is the second largest tyre manufacturing concern in South Korea and the 9th largest tyre manufacturer in the world, is going to expand in Hungary. People have mixed feelings about the matter.
Tyre manufacturers in Hungary
Hungarian FM Péter Szijjártó announced the construction of a new factory. Despite that, there is no information about the location or the amount of money to be invested. G7.hu writes that the South Korean company, owned by a Chinese parent company, is the 9th largest tyre manufacturer in the world. With the new Korean investment, six major global companies will be produced in Hungary. Furthermore, these companies together account for 2 percent of the country’s GDP. According to gumi.hu, Hungary is already an important destination for investors in the tyre industry.
- The Michelin group has been operating in Hungary since 1996. They are manufacturing tyres, but they also have four sites where they do logistics.
- The Korean Hankook Tire has a factory in Dunaújváros. The factory opened in 2007 and there are currently 3300 employees working there.
- Bridgestone Tatabánya Termelő Ltd. also started manufacturing in 2007. It has around 1300 employees in its factory in Komárom-Esztergom county.
- The Indian Apollo Tyres has been operating six factories in Hungary since 2017. These factories produce over six million tyres per year.
Car industry investments
As mfor.hu reported, the Hungarian government has made a lot of announcements about companies in the car industry coming to Hungary. Márton Nagy, the Minister of Economic Development, reasons that EU funds are currently unpredictable in Hungary. Thus, the country needs a more stable capital for development. Not too long ago, in June, FM Péter Szijjártó announced that the Chinese electronic car manufacturer BYD is making a big investment in Hungary. According to the plans, the Chinese investor wanted to establish a factory in Fót. However, this HUF 10 billion (EUR 26.2 million) investment will not be realised. The mayor of the town does not want such environment-polluting investors in the town.
Problems with tyre investors
The European market is now the most important for the Korean tyre manufacturer, which is already doubling its sales on the continent this year. Their priority is to cut logistics and labour costs. Although, their Korean workers have already protested against outsourcing production. Hungary appeals to cheap guest workers, therefore it could be a good location. In Hankook’s Hungarian factory, there were many Ukrainian and Mongolian guest workers even before the COVID-19 pandemic.
The tyre industry is facing environmental concerns as well. Hankook, a strategic partner of the Hungarian government, is notorious for sabotaging worker’s representation. Accidents are also a regular occurrence in rubber factories. The Hungarian Rubber Industry Association reports hundreds of accidents in the rubber and plastic industry every year.

The meeting had special importance for Hungary’s energy security because consultations are under way with Turkmenistan about a comprehensive energy cooperation agreement, Bertalan Havasi said. An important element of the agreement is that Hungary could be one of the target countries of Turkmen gas exports in the future, he added.
The sides were in agreement that there are untapped opportunities in Hungary-Turkmenistan cooperation in the areas of health care, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, food industry, water management, education, and culture, Havasi said. Berdimuhamedow congratulated to the Hungarian people on the occasion of the Aug. 20 national holiday.

PHOTOS, VIDEO: Hungarian company makes fighters for Vietnam’s modernised air force against China
Aero Vodochody is a Czech aircraft company owned by the Hungarian state. They have a new fighter and training jet type, the L-39NG, which they aim to produce in mass. The first order came from Vietnam, the second from Hungary, and their name popped up in a joint military aircraft manufacturing program for Ukraine. The Hungarian state theoretically against delivering arms to Kyiv was not against the plan.
Fighter aircrafts for Vietnam, Hungary, Senegal, Ghana
According to g7.hu, Aero Vodochody presented their first L‑39NG fighter and training military aircraft in August. The colours are of the Vietnamese air force, where the first jets will go to strengthen it against China, the country’s main rival in the region. Interestingly, Aero Vodochody is not a Czech company. The majority ownership went to Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky in 2021. After he was nominated Hungary’s minister of defence, he sold his shares to MOL CEO Zsolt Hernádi, who passed it to the state months later.

They have new composite wings, American Williams motors, a new cockpit and modern electronic and avionics systems.

Vietnam will receive the new aircraft in 2023-2024, and Hungary will get its 12 new jets after August 2024. As a result, we will be able to train our Gripen pilots instead of sending them to Canada. The new type will be introduced in the Czech fighter training, and there is gossip about deals with Senegal and Ghana. Therefore, they would like to increase production capacity from one per month to two.
Czech President Petr Pavel mentioned the Aero as a possible player in a Ukrainian-Czech joint military aircraft manufacturing cooperation. The majority owner, the Hungarian state, did not comment on the idea.

PHOTO: Hungarian man sentenced to death ends up serving 18 years in Thailand’s toughest prison
Sándor Krebs shipped large quantities of drugs to Thailand 28 years ago at the request of a friend. He was caught at the airport and sentenced to death for his criminal activities. He pleaded guilty immediately, thus his sentence was reduced and he was “only” sentenced to 100 years in prison. Over time, the conviction was gradually reduced. Krebs was eventually sentenced to “only” 18 years in Thailand’s most brutal prison.
Index wrote that 28 years ago, in 1995, Sándor Krebs was caught at an airport in Thailand with two kilogrammes of heroin. He was immediately sentenced to death. It has been 11 years since the release of the graphic artist known as “Shani”, who recalls his years in prison over a decade ago. He spent 18 years in Thailand’s most brutal prison. According to him, drawing saved his life during those tough years. Drawing was the only thing that made his daily life active. Krebs said that his sentence was always reduced when the Thai king had a birthday or there was some other special day.
Life behind bars
Krebs said during an interview with RTL that although he had to live in primitive conditions in prison, he never felt confined and always found something to do. Of course, he looks back on the 18 years of his life behind bars as a negative experience. He was fed poor-quality food, had no clean water to shower, and had to share a room with 23 other people. Despite the horrible experience, he is glad that he has found his true passion: art. The Hungarian man has spent most of his days drawing, but he equally liked playing football. These were his only escape and the only possibility to spend time actively. While doing these activities, he felt like time passed faster too. He said:
If I could start again, I would certainly not touch drugs, I would have studied instead. But that cannot be changed now. Ultimately, I am grateful for what I have experienced.
Here is a photo of Mr Krebs:
Life after prison
During the interview, he was asked if he was ever able to get rid of his thoughts about prison. Krebs said that this experience cannot be erased from his brain, it will always stay in his memories and thoughts. The graphic artist later wrote a book about his experience behind bars. He visits schools regularly and gives lectures about the dangers of drugs to young people. His integration back into normal everyday life was challenging after his release. It was hard to find a connection again with his family. He was not able to find a job either for a long time. Krebs tried to make something out of his artistic skills, to make a living out of it. He wanted to build up his own business.
New direct flight from Budapest to this Asian capital from today!
Hungary and Uzbekistan are to be connected by a direct flight from Sunday; there will be two weekly flights between Budapest and Tashkent from September, three from January and four from 2025, Péter Szijjártó, the minister of foreign affairs and trade, said on Saturday. Speaking at a joint press conference with Uzbek Minister of Industry and Trade Laziz Kudratov in Budapest, Szijjártó said the first flight of Qanot Sharq Airlines will arrive to Budapest on Sunday.
Guest workers will come to Hungary from Uzbekistan with the new flight?
In view of the new flights, the number of consuls has been increased at the Hungarian embassy in Tashkent and the issuance of visas has been accelerated so it is now easier for Uzbeks to travel to Hungary, and the same is true the other way round, Szijjártó said, according to a foreign ministry statement. He noted that, like Hungary, Uzbekistan has plans to build a new nuclear power plant.
Some comment writers said the new flights serve only the purpose of carrying guest workers to Hungary. We wrote that the Hungarian government expects hundreds of thousands of guest workers from Asia to boost the economy HERE.
“An agreement has been reached that if progress is made in the nuclear project in Uzbekistan, then Hungarian dry-cooling technology will be used, which will mean a Russian-Uzbek-Hungarian cooperation worth several hundred million euros,” he said. Szijjártó expressed his hope that the new flight will give impetus to bilateral economic relations, and welcomed the fact that Hungarian pharmaceutical companies had already established a foothold in Uzbekistan. Richter is in talks on the local production of two of its products, while Meditop has opened its office and is preparing investments in the country, he said.

Hungary-Uzbekistan summit:
OTP, investors go to Tashkent
He added that OTP Bank agreed with the Uzbek state investment fund on setting up a joint investment funds worth 100 million US dollars. Szijjártó said preparations are under way for a special industrial zone near Tashkent, scheduled to be ready by the end of this year, where Hungarian investors will be able to operate under preferential rules. Around a dozen companies have already expressed interest in the opportunities, he added. He also noted that 170 Uzbek students a year study with scholarships at Hungarian universities, and almost 800 applications have been received this year.

The prime minister welcomed that the strategic partnership between Hungary and Uzbekistan was being expanded to more and more areas, and that bilateral ties were also expanding, most recently with the establishment of a direct air link between the two countries’ capitals and with OTP Bank’s entry onto the Uzbek financial market. Mirziyoyev is scheduled to attend the August 20 celebrations and events at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest.
Orbán: Budapest is a must-visit city
The World Athletics Championships and other similar top sporting events send a message to the world that Budapest is “must-visit” city, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán told public radio on Friday.
Orbán said sports events were a boon economically but more importantly focused the world’s attention on the host country.
After hosting a string of top events over the past few years, Hungary is now “within arm’s reach of hosting a Champions League Final“, he added, thanking the organisers and volunteers for their work.
Meanwhile, the prime minister noted that he will host a dozen official bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the athletics championships and the 20 August national holiday, referring to meetings with the Turkish president, the Serbian president and the Emir of Qatar and “political friends” from Central Asia region such as Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Turkmenistan. Meetings will also take place with business representatives from all over the world, largely from western Europe and China, he said.

“WONDERFUL INDONESIA”
Indonesia is a huge nation comprised of hundreds of cultures derived from local regions, making it one of the most diverse countries in the world. Living on more than 13 400 islands, the Indonesian nation today counts over 273 million population comprising over 200 ethnic groups with their own languages and dialects. The Indonesian youth, in their Youth Pledge of 1928 vowed together to build “One Country, One Nation and One Language: Indonesia”, regardless of race, religion, language, or ethnic background in the territory known as the Dutch East Indies. After gaining Independence in 1945, inter-marriages among people of different ethnic groups have welded the population into a more cohesive Indonesian nation. As a massive archipelago, it is understandable that Indonesia has plenty of tourist destinations. In 2019, the Government of Indonesia released a programme called “10 New Bali”, 5 of these destinations are named Super Priority Destinations. These Super Priority Destinations are:
- Lake Toba, North Sumatra is an extraordinary natural wonder of the world. It is the largest and deepest volcanic lake in the world. In the middle of it, there is an island almost the size of Singapore. At over 1,145 square km and a depth of 450m, Lake Toba is more like the ocean.
- Borobudur Temple, Central Java – Located on the island of Java, the magnificent Borobudur temple is the world’s biggest Buddhist monument. The temple sits majestically on a hilltop overlooking lush green fields and distant hills. Build between 780 – 840 AD, during the reign of the Syailendra dynasty, the temple’s design in Gupta architecture reflects India’s influence on the region. However, there are enough indigenous scenes and elements incorporated to make Borobudur uniquely Indonesia.
- Mandalika, West Nusa Tenggara – Along the south coast of Lombok Island lies a long and wide stretch of beautiful white sand beach facing the glistening Indian Ocean. In the background are lush green hills and mesmerizing landscapes. This is Mandalika, once a surfers’ best-kept secret, now it has emerged as the island’s capital of leisure. Here, the tourism industry fused seamlessly with the unique and colorful culture of the local people that is still well preserved for generations.
- Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara – On the westernmost tip of Flores Island sits the town of Labuan Bajo. It lies peacefully with many wonders waiting to be explored. The extraordinary interest among travelers lies in Komodo dragons or locally called “Ora”. The Komodo National Park was listed as UNESCO’s World Heritage. Both on land and underwater, it is home to fascinating wildlife.
- Likupang, North Sulawesi – North Sulawesi is a province in Indonesia that is well known for its stunning natural attractions. The Beaches, the mountainous areas, and the lush forests are the highlights that make this destination special. Likupang beach is one of the best places in this province. The beach is in the northernmost part of Sulawesi and just 48km away from Manado, the capital of the province. The white sandy beach along with the pristine water that aligns with the green hills seen from a distance is already enough for Likupang beach to take anyone’s breath away. The beautiful clear seawater once stunned locals and Indonesia’s World Wildlife Fund in 2007 because a green sea turtle was seen in the area. The presence of a rare species like this is a sign that the ocean ecosystem of North Sulawesi is in good condition. This clear water is also a favorite place for people to dive and snorkel in.
Before departing on your exciting adventure across the various wonders of Indonesia, be sure you have the necessary travel documents that you will need to bring along on your trip. Hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese, Kyrgyz, and Filipinos will come to work in Hungary
Zoltán Karácsony, an expert on HR Portal, told Világgazdaság that there are 25 licensed companies in Hungary bringing guest workers to Hungary from the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Mongolia, and Kyrgyzstan.
Interestingly, the government campaigned before the 2015 migration crisis that no migrants could take the jobs of the Hungarians. However, the world has changed since then. Now, the Hungarian economy needs more and more workers, but the jobs it offers are no longer attractive for Hungarians. For example, we know the new Chinese battery plants will welcome thousands of guest workers.
The answer is easy. Hundreds of thousands of Hungarians live and work abroad. That is because they can get multiple times the Hungarian salaries in Austria, Germany, or the United Kingdom. Their workforce is badly needed in Hungary, but they will not return for such low-added value jobs offering non-compatible salaries. Therefore, Hungary needs guest workers.
No chance to remain in Hungary for the guest workers
According to the government-close Világgazdaság, they come mostly from Central and Southeastern Asia. It is probably not by chance that new flights are launched to these regions. For example, the one going to Uzbekistan’s Tashkent has been announced recently.
Mr Karácsony said that Hungarian companies could not find suitable workforce in the industry, service, and hotel sector. Világgazdaság argues that there can be 0.5 million new workplaces in Hungary in the next few years. Therefore, we need 200-300 thousand more guest workers above the current 100,000.
State secretary Sándor Czomba said last week that the parliament made it easier for them to come and work in Hungary. However, they will have no chance to remain here.
The number of open positions is rising. For example, Hungarian companies need welders, truck drivers (we wrote HERE about Indian female drivers coming to Hungary), and forklift drivers. Despite the parliament’s easing, the administration for the guest workers still lasts 14-15 weeks.
Wizz Air to connect Hungary with another Asian metropolis
We wrote before about the Budapest-Tashkent direct flight connecting the Central Asian capital with Hungary’s astonishing capital. But Hungary’s low-cost airline, Wizz Air, is also planning to open a flight to Uzbekistan. They would like to offer direct travel opportunity between Budapest and Samarkand.
Uzbekistan and Central Asia come closer to Hungary
Samarkand or Samarqand is a city of more than 600,000 people located in Southeast Uzbekistan. Being the second biggest in Uzbekistan, the city of Samarkand was founded in the 8-7th century BC when Rome was founded. It has prospered for long since it was a centre for trade between Europe, the Middle East and China. Being an important stopping point on the Silk Road, it was one of the largest cities of the empires formed and fallen in the region.
The city is noted as a centre of Islamic scholarly study and the birthplace of the Timurid Renaissance. Therefore, the old city offers tremendous opportunities to learn about history and culture by visiting monuments, shops, and old private houses. Meanwhile, the new city is the venue of modern business with its educational, industrial and administrative institutions. The international airport is just 6 kilometres away from the old city.
Samarkand is well known for craft production, Silk Way caravans and Islamic architecture with popular tourist attractions including Registon Square, Bibi-Khanym Mosque and Shah-i-Zinda. Famous local dishes include Plov, which is made of rice, meat (beef or lamb), onions, carrots, garlic and dried fruit including sultanas or barberries cooked in giant cauldrons called kazans and Kebab, prepared with thin layers of boiled dough with dried veal meat served with finely chopped onion dried tomatoes and radish, wizzair.com wrote.
Samarkand is the next city to which Hungary’s low-cost airline, Wizz Air, will carry passengers from Budapest. The service will begin this December, Péter Szijjártó, Hungary’s foreign minister, announced this week following the meeting of the Uzbek-Hungarian inter-governmental economic affairs committee.
Wizz Air to fly to Uzbekistan from Budapest, route is unknown yet
As we wrote earlier, Uzbek Qanot Sharq Airlines will operate flights between Tashkent and Budapest. Qanot Sharq airline will start flights between Tashkent and Budapest Airport on 20 August with its Airbus A320 aircraft. From end-August, one flight will commute between the two capitals per week. That number will increase to two flights per week in the autumn and three flights per week from 1 January 2024, airportal.hu wrote. However, Budfyler noted that flights cannot be booked yet on the company’s website.
Such details were not shared about Wizz Air’s new flight to the Uzbek city of Samarkand. The company recalled that they operated flights between their Middle-Eastern hub, Abu Dhabi, Tashkent and Samarkand. However, they did not explain why they could not operate the new Budapest-Tashkent flight with that experience.
Budflyer wrote that Wizz Air’s flights to Samarkand could be uncertain. That is because the Hungarian carriers cannot use Russian airspace. Therefore, Wizz can only connect the two cities with a significant detour. Maybe that is why they will not operate the flight to Tashkent. And that is why the Astana flight has been paused, while opening a new route to Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, progresses slowly.
HERE is an article about a Wizz Air flight to Budapest stranded in Abu Dhabi for more than 30 hours. Furthermore, the UK Civil Aviation Authority brought enforcement action against Wizz Air – details in THIS article.
