If you google Hungary or Budapest, you will find numerous travel journals, videos, articles written by foreigners, telling you why Hungary and the capital city is worth a trip. Buzzfeed did as well, highlighting festivals, different towns and traditions, hungaricums, also providing the reader with useful tips related to each item.
1 – Buda Castle
It is no wonder the Buda Castle is featured on the UNESCO World Heritage list, as it is possibly the most beautiful combination in the world, consisting of the hillside, architecture and the Danube.
Tip: try and visit the castle district after sundown, the lights are magical at those hours.
2 – Hortobágy
Hortobágy is the most plain-like plain not only in the Hungarian Great Plain but whole Europe. It is worth visiting because of the beautiful sunsets, the traditional Hungarian wells, and because of the trick shows of the Hungarian cowboys (‘csikós’).
Tip: Check out the Nine-holed Bridge, the symbol of Hortobágy.
3 – Pécs
A pleasant Mediterranean climate, Europe’s most northern-located mosque, lively night-life and vast crowds of university students is why Pécs is the second best city in Hungary, according to Buzzfeed.
Tip: there’s a small village nearby, Villány, where you will find the best red wine in the country.
4 – Hollókő
Traditions are cultivated and protected everywhere in Hungary, but Hollókő stands out from the rest of the villages. The romantic sights, the old houses and the colourful traditional costumes are why you should not skip Hollókő if you’re interested in old Hungarian values.
Tip: if you can visit during Easter when the local men grab buckets full of water and honour the women by pouring a bucket onto each one of them.
5 – Siófok
Just like Ibiza! Siófok is located on the southern bank of Lake Balaton, which is Central Europe’s largest lake. Siófok is practically a party town during the summer days. Beautiful Hungarian women, sunshine, clubs, where the party never ends, what else needs to be said?
Tip (for party lovers): a few kilometres away Hungary’s biggest electronic music festival, Balaton Sound, is organised yearly at Zamárdi.
6 – Esztergom
Esztergom is a charming town, which serves as Hungary’s spiritual home. At its heart lies the architectural and artistic wonder that the basilica is. Here the Danube serves as the border between Slovakia and Hungary. Esztergom is one of the oldest Hungarian cities, where you can literally breathe in history.
7 – Jewish traditions in Budapest
Do you remember that the Dohány Street Synagogue is the largest one on the European continent? Jewish traditions are thriving in Budapest and the 7th district, in the traditional Jewish district, you will find numerous memorials next to popular cafés and pubs.
Tip: make sure to take a walk along Kazinczy street.
8 – Balaton Uplands
The Balaton Uplands on the northern bank of Lake Balaton often slip people’s attention, even though there is an abundance of things to be seen here. For example, tiny volcanoes, vineyards where you can get a taste of the local grape, cultural festivals, bicycle roads and a beautiful view of the lake.
Tip: you can get a view of the whole lake from the hill of the Tihany Abbey. The abbey is actually one of the most astonishing churches in Hungary.
9 – Aggtelek
Central Europe’s biggest and most intricate cave system is between an enchanted forest and the castle of a queen from a fairy tale. We’re not surprised that the Aggtelek Caves are also one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Tip: half of the cave belongs to Slovakia, thus on particular days you can cross the border underground.
10 – Sziget Festival
There’s an island on the Danube that goes crazy every August. One of Europe’s biggest and most popular music festivals is organised here for more than 20 years now. The festival’s success is so great abroad that the Dutch, French and Italian visitors outnumber the Hungarians.
Tip: if you’re already at Sziget, take a look around Budapest if you have some free time. All festival-goers do this.
11 – Debrecen
Debrecen is Hungary’s second biggest city, also dubbed as the ‘Calvinist Rome’. The busy and devoted locals built a church on the main square, and you will hardly find another such well-kept city in Hungary. If you’re visiting in August, you might be able to catch the Flower Carnival.
Tip: the local football team is said to be the best in the country, and the football stadium is a pretty cool sight.
12 – Szentendre
Although Szentendre is extremely close to Budapest, it is an entirely different world. Szentendre is the beloved place of Hungarian artists and bohemians, and the cobbled streets and unusual cafés work like magnets when it comes to tourists.
Tip: the old royal Hungarian inhabitancy, the Visegrád castle, is located close-by, which if you visit Szentendre too, won’t even take up a day.
13 – The baths in Budapest
Be it roofed or outdoors, modern or medieval, steam bath or sauna, the Budapest baths will surely satisfy all your water-related cravings. There is a handful of baths to choose from in the city of waters.
Tip: be careful, some baths can be visited only by men.
14 – Tokaj
The local aszú (muscatel) is rightfully crowned as the king of wines: Buzzfeed argues that an old Burgundy red wine will be just a quality grape juice compared to the wines that are produced at the hillsides of northern Hungary. Plus, the prices are reasonable.
Tip: the best hotels and restaurants in the area are in Mád.
15 – Ecseri Flea Market
As we’ve said previously, it is indeed mind-blowing how many treasures and collection items you can find at this flea market near Budapest. All eras and all functions are represented here.
Tip: observe the sellers too, they are quite impressive people.
Ever since I found out about my Hungarian ancestry as a kid, I’ve been inspired to learn more and eager to visit Hungary. In the recent years, I’ve been exploring the country quite a lot, and last summer, especially when Christine and I did a road trip by train from Budapest to Eger, Miskolc, Tokaji, Debrecen and back to Budapest!
This article is a tribute to my Hungarian heritage and my grandfather Géza Waltner, who lives in the small but charming town of Sajószentpéter.
If you haven’t yet been, I urge you to go and experience all that Hungary has to offer. Here are 55 reasons why I think everyone should visit Hungary at least once in their life!
1. FOOD
One of the first things that come to mind when I think about Hungary is the food. There are so many delicious and flavorful dishes to try. Below are some notable dishes that are traditional in the Hungarian kitchen: Pörkölt, Gulyás, Halászlé, Meggyleves, Rakott Krumpli, Húsleves, Töltött Paprika, Lecsó, Paprikás Csirke, Töltött káposzta.
2. ESZTERGOM
An old city that already existed during Roman times and the former capital of Hungary between the 900’s and 1200’s, before King Bela IV moved the capital to Buda. The famous basilica is also the largest church in all of the country.
Esztergom is surely another good reason to visit Hungary beyond Budapest!
3. FISHERMAN’S BASTION
Few attractions have caught my eyes like the Fisherman’s Bastion and Mathias Church next to it. This place is like taken out of a fairytale, but it’s very real, and you can walk here yourself. If you come here early in the morning, you can almost imagine walking around in a scene from the Lord of the Rings!
fisherman’s bastion
4. TOKAJI ASZU
Probably the best sweet wine in the world. It’s so delicious. The first time you try it, make sure to select a good quality Tokaji Aszu with at least 5 puttonyos. Read more HERE.
5. ARCHITECTURE
Everywhere you go in Hungary, you will see old and beautiful architecture. In Budapest, you can walk around a whole day, just looking at old buildings and still haven’t seen them all. But also in other cities you will see some impressive architecture!
St Stephen’s Basilika
6. LILLAFÜRED
Famous for the natural caves and the Palace hotel in neo-Renaissance style as well as being home to the highest waterfall in Hungary.
lillafûred
7. INTERESTING AND UNIQUE FOLK TRADITION
Hungarian culture and traditions are some of the best-preserved ones in Europe. They go back to the old days, and as a tourist, it will be very interesting to attend events and festivals.
8. AGGTELEK
A world heritage site and also the longest stalactite cave system in Europe. If you like to explore underground, then you shouldn’t miss Aggtelek in Northeastern Hungary!
aggtelek – reasons to travel to hungary
9. IT’S STILL AFFORDABLE AS A TOURIST
While prices have increased in Budapest in recent years, it’s still very much affordable to visit Hungary as a tourist. You can see a lot of things, use public transportation, eat lots of food and have a good time without breaking the bank.
The same goes for hotel and spa experiences. You can stay at a luxury hotel here for at least half the price compared to cities like London or Paris.
10. BUDAPEST
One of my absolute favorite cities worldwide. There are just so many attractions, spa, neighborhoods, nature, cafés, bars and shopping that you could stay here forever and never get bored. As a tourist, you will probably only stay for a couple of days, but you’ll definitely want to come back!
While Opera originated in Italy, you will find plenty of extravaganza and quality for your money when attending the National State Opera House in Budapest. First of all, the opera house is one of the most beautiful in the whole world with fantastic acoustic. Secondly, it’s very cheap compared to La Scala, but you still get a high-class performance here!
If you haven’t been to an Opera before, then make sure to go in Budapest.
12. LÁNGOS
Probably the best snack/fast food in the whole world.
It seems like the world-conquering tour of lángos in unstoppable. More and more people hear about it, give it try and also hopefully send its word all around the world. It is not too complicated to make lángos and it is definitely worth to give it a try. (LÁNGOS RECIPE – Read more here and watch the video.)
13. HOLLÓKÖ
Another UNESCO world heritage site, and a place to visit if you want to get a cultural experience. Here you can also see the Hollokö castle.
14. BALATON SOUND AND SZIGET FESTIVAL
If you like to party with people from all over the world, you should visit Hungary when Balaton Sound or Sziget Festival is ongoing. I will let the videos talk for the festivals, and if you like it, then you know that you have to come!

The Hungarian Tourism Agency is offering visitors to the week-long Sziget Festival, in northern Budapest, a chance to participate in virtual tours of Hungary from the comfort of beanbags and backstage tours.
With the help of VR headsets, they can experience Budapest with a bird’s eye view, as well as visiting unique natural sites around Hungary, such as the volcanic basalt rocks of Hegyestű, in the northern Balaton region, the Megyer mountain lake, in the north-east, the salt hills of Egerszalók, in northern Hungary, and the cave lakes of Tapolca in the west. Additionally, they get virtual tours of Hungary’s VOLT and Balaton Sound summer international music festivals.
The Hungarian Tourism Agency in cooperation with public radio Petőfi also offers backstage tours to Sziget-goers who want to take selfies in front of a display of large white letters spelling HelloHungary and upload it to social media sites with the hashtags #fedezdfel and #hellohungary.
The agency said it wants to show international festival-goers that there is more to Hungary than its festivals and to help visitors at home explore some hidden gems around the country.
Five foreigners have been robbing and assaulting people with pepper spray at Balaton Sound. Hvg.hu reports that the court has ruled to put the men under preliminary arrest.
The Siófok local prosecution proposed the arrest of the four Belgian and one Italian man, which has been ruled by the court now. They are accused of stealing necklaces at Balaton Sound festival. Victims have made reports first after the Tiesto concert on Thursday, with 10 people being injured, but their criminal activities peaked on Friday, where they injured 30 people. This carried on until Sunday dawn when the local police caught them.
[button link=”https://dailynewshungary.com/11th-balaton-sound-154-thousands-festival-goers/” newwindow=”yes”] Despite the robberies, the festival was a great success – check out the photos [/button]
The Belgians and the Italian have agreed between themselves and with other people to harmonise their efforts of robbing festival goers at Balaton Sound. They targeted people in the crowd and then tore off their gold necklaces, usually from behind, in some cases, they even implemented the use of pepper spray: the Italian man sprayed people, while the Belgians robbed them. They managed to steal necklaces worth 3,250 euros altogether.
The court has ruled to put the men (aged 23-26) under preliminary arrest, as to prevent them from escaping and hiding, and presenting further difficulties for the authorities to prove their guiltiness.
It is suspected that they had accomplices, whom the police have not yet managed to find.
Balaton Sound is an emphasized touristic event in Hungary, it is not just a music festival but an important “touristic magnet” which attracts more than 150 thousands of visitors, much of them from other European countries, this way it has an important role in the international popularization of Lake Balaton.
Balaton Sound, the 5-day beach festival, hosted the most wanted world-class DJs as well as the world’s most demanded party series Elrow, which made an impressive debut on the festival, becoming a popular new party venue.
On Saturday – with the anticipated shows of Robin Schulz and Kygo, among others – the party was sold out and the weather was gracious with Balaton Sound through all 5 days of the festival. The street theatre performances brought down the house, the giant jellyfishes, drummers and the real Rio atmosphere showed a new image of the exciting and spectacular festival.
The piers built on the lake were full and the daily running Party Boat was sold out, many of the visitors have tried Mingo Polo and water sports also were popular. One of the new elements of this – supported by Hungarian Tourist Agency – were the 360 VR tour, where visitors could participate in virtual country tours in the surrounding area of the festival and visit Badacsony, Tihany or the center of Veszprém.
With the festival season knocking at our door, lovers of water and concerts might wonder what to do during the summer. Index.hu has compiled a list of things you can do at Lake Balaton.

The 10th Balaton Sound, organized at Lake Balaton in Hungary, has closed with a total visitor number of 157 thousand, breaking all records of the event’s history so far. Saturday was completely sold out, while the other days of the 5-day beach party were also nearly full.
In 2016 Balaton Sound had 12.000 more visitors than last year in total, clearly stating that the world-class acts combined with sunshine and a long and directly accessible beach is continuously a great combination for festival fans. Visitors came from 63 countries, which is also a new record and shows the international potential of the event.
The 10th Balaton Sound was crowned with birthday parties every day. Visitors could take home T-shirts from the T-shirt cannon shot on the Main Stage, but there were also more than 10.000 birthday selfies made, as well as the “candles” blown in a framework of a huge confetti party on the last night. The boat parties introduced this year, taking place on Lake Balaton in the afternoons with great DJs and fantastic atmosphere were also a huge success.
Many festivals in the world are organized by water, but there are only a few that actually happen on the water. Balaton Sound had 2000 square meters of its venues built on the lake, constantly attracting the visitors to feel the Balaton atmosphere from the closest possible range. The Jana Pier covered with sand had a great beach vibe, as well as the new Akvárium Beach, while the new Heineken Beach with a gigantic pyramid built on the water was one of the eye-catchers of the event.
This year a ferris wheel also had its debut at Balaton Sound. The 35-meter high Balaton Eye opened up a whole new perspective of the Lake and the beautiful setting.
Next year Balaton Sound will be organized at the same location, in the pretty city of Zamárdi between 28 June – 2 July, 2017.

The 2016 season of the popular Hungarian festival came to an end with the 11th of July. The Balaton Sound was organized, as usual, at the biggest European freshwater lake, Balaton, at the beach of Zamárdi. It was the tenth time for the “Sound community” to rave the night away.
The Festival is known as the main event for club music in the country, and it definitely did not disappoint its fans in 2016. Performers, like Armin van Buuren, Steve Aoki, Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike, Martin Solveig, Duke Dumont, Fritz Kalkbrenner or Hernan Cattaneo were all there to “make some noise”, as also a number of other DJs, at 19 locations of the Festival, from all over the world, to keep the lovers of dancing up, from the moment when the sun reaches its peak, sinks in the lake, and comes up again, from the specular surface of the Balaton.
Also, the festival successfully tried to attach the more ordinary festivalgoers as well, as Balaton Sound is quite famous for having an audience significantly different from other festivals. This is probably why, while having a few somewhat more instrumental performers, like Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, Chris Brown, Punany Massif, Halott Pénz or Brains, they also started to hide the open-air gyms otherwise so characteristic about this festival. Still, most of the people visiting Sound are quite stereo-typically bulk up guys and girls, who fell into Mica powder on the way to Zamárdi.
On the end of hospitality Balaton Sound seems to have a so-called European quality service. While the beer given at the bars is still not the best, it is, at least, still affordable, and the staff is nice enough to change your closed can of beer to a cold one, if it happens to warms up in the high temperatures.
While the whole festival seems to be mature and well organized, sadly, some foreign performers still made some scandals to happen. While Robin Schulz, for example, one of the most anticipated stars, canceled his show, another team, the Canadian DVBBS are rumored to have made quite some mass at their dressing room at the festival. But, at these times, there are always performers who help you smile again.
But these cases obviously seem to generate themselves without reflecting bad on the festival as a whole that – through hard work – obviously presented the best parties of the summer for the lovers of club music and slicing movements in the mirror of the sun. Now, a long week of recovery would be welcomed. Unfortunately for festival-travelers, EFOTT starts off in just a few days, so “az éjjel soha nem érhet véget” (“the night can never end” – sung by the fans of the Hungarian football team at Euro2016).

The opening day of Balaton Sound brought a huge surprise when the gig of Macklemore & Ryan Lewis began and the frontman welcomed the festival-goers, wearing the jersey of Balázs Dzsudzsák, captain of the Hungarian national football team, writes szeretlekmagyarorszag.hu.
The main attraction of the first day (July 6) of Balaton Sound was undoubtedly the American duo, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. Their performance sounded already promising, bringing lots of people to the festival, unsurprisingly, as two years ago the crowd went crazy for them at Sziget Festival.
Yet, this time not only their amazing hits made sure everyone was having a fantastic time, but a piece of clothing heightened the atmosphere: during their whole show, Macklemore was wearing the jersey of Balázs Dzsudzsák.
The incredibly crowded audience, and especially the Hungarians were absolutely flattered by it, though, it remained unknown whether the musician was watching the Hungarian team at the Euros, or he was simply acquainted by the huge rooting phenomenon in the country.
Anyway, it was truly an awesome thing to do and the people loved it! Thus, see a small collection of Instagram photos about the event showing Macklemore on the main stage of Balaton Sound, wearing the red jersey; and a short video of his adventures in Budapest.
