Hungary face mask Budapest

The united opposition has demanded the lifting of epidemiological restrictions and the special legal order introduced in connection with the coronavirus pandemic.

Politicians of Jobbik, the Socialists, DK, LMP and Parbeszed, and an allied opposition candidate of Budapest’s 13th district held a joint press conference on Thursday. Párbeszéd spokesman Richárd Barabás said the coronavirus pandemic had entered a new phase where emphasis should be placed on individual responsibility rather than state control. He called for an end to all state restrictions that curb people’s freedoms.

LMP co-leader Erzsébet Schmuck said people wanted to return to a normal life, and discriminating against the unvaccinated was “unacceptable”. She said adults could decide when and where they should be wearing masks, and she called coronavirus testing to be made free of charge.

Budapest 13th district candidate Zoltán Vajda highlighted contradictions in restrictions, noting that participants of sporting events were not expected to wear a mask but theatregoers must wear them during a performance.

DK deputy group leader Gergely Arató said Prime Minister

Viktor Orbán had been “holding back information” about what justified certain restrictions ever since the start of the epidemic.

Jobbik lawmaker György László Lukács called for an end to limits on health care which, he added, meant that many people were not getting proper care.

COVID test protect against COVID-19

The products that protect against COVID-19 are marketed in 40 countries. Now, according to a court decision, they can be sold and purchased in Hungary again.

“In its judgment of 1 February, the Metropolitan Court annulled the decision of the National Institute of Pharmacy and Food Health (OGYÉI) ordering the withdrawal of Virostop nasal and oral spray.” – storeinsider.hu writes. According to the manufacturer,  „the patented mix of active natural ingredients in Virostop mechanically protects against the penetration of these invisible enemies into your organism, this way also alleviates symptoms of Covid-19 disease.”

Now the Virostop products can be sold in Hungary again. A former international clinical testing came to the conclusion that the product can prevent coronavirus infection. In the tested people, the virus could not be indicated with a PCR test, either.

The products that protect against COVID-19 can be found in pharmacies and online stores. In 2021, the National Institute of Pharmacy and Food Health (OGYÉI) banned the products from being sold. The mouth spray was registered as a medical tool in 2014 and the nasal spray in 2016. The reason behind banning the products was that the company, Fytofontana Kft. did not conform to the regulations. As storeinsider.hu writes, the company eventually filed a lawsuit and on the 1st of February, the court decided in the company’s favour.

In 2021, the court stated that the National Institute of Pharmacy and Food Health’s decision did not comply with legal requirements.

According to the company’s website, the Virostop clinical study confirmed a significant reduction in the severity of respiratory clinical symptoms and a 60% viral shedding in the case of COVID-19 and SARS-CoV-2. The information they published also says that the products „can be safely used by children from three years of age.” The website also quotes Ondrej Michlo, The Executive Director of Herb-Pharma Corporation. He said that more than 2 million products have been sold in Europe. The in-vitro study conducted also proved the Virostop products’ effectiveness against influenza A and influenza B.

Hungary donates another 120 ventilators to Ukraine

Ukraine and Hungary Cooperation

Hungary is again helping Ukraine with the fight against coronavirus through a donation of 120 ventilators, half of which will be set up in hospitals in Transcarpathia (Kárpátalja), Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said on Monday.

On the way to a Brussels meeting of European Union foreign ministers, Szijjártó said on Facebook that similarly to a previous donation of similar size, the ventilators will be delivered with the help of the Ecumenical Charity.

Commenting on the meeting, he said it was scheduled to address the tensions that developed in eastern Europe.

“Hungary has a vested interest in peace and we therefore expect the large players in world politics to continue high-level dialogue which represents the only hope for a peaceful solution,” he said.

“Even though we understand that relations between Hungary and Ukraine are burdened with tensions, with Ukraine repeatedly violating the rights of ethnic Hungarian commnities, Hungary has always expressed support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty,” he added.

“We have always helped Ukrainians when they were in trouble and they needed any support and help in the fight against the pandemic,” Szijjártó said.

Thousands of people also participated in the weekend vaccination campaign, and registration and appointment booking are open for vaccination.

In February, there will be vaccination campaigns every Thursday, Friday and Saturday at hospital vaccination points. Priority for vaccination will continue to be given to unvaccinated people and those who have had their previous vaccination more than 4 months ago. Booster vaccination is recommended for anyone who has had their previous vaccination more than 4 months ago.

With a third vaccination, protection can be increased again to 80-90%.

There is still a choice of five vaccines at central vaccination points. In addition, GPs will continue to offer vaccinations.

In addition to healthcare facilities and public transport, masks must still be worn in shops, shopping centres, post offices, customer services, theatres, cinemas, museums and sporting events.

In indoor cultural and other events, gyms, swimming pools, spas and catering establishments, mask wearing is compulsory for all employees.

“The work of a lifetime is gone” – the heartbreaking story of a Hungarian figure skater

Sports Figure Skating

The Hungarian figure skater, Márk Magyar, tested positive just after arriving in Beijing for his Olympic performance, so he was sent to a quarantine hotel. He was eventually unable to do his performance and compete for his country. He then made a media statement expressing his disappointment.

Scattered dreams

The athlete says he has worked hard for many years, but especially in the last four years, to show his skills in the prestigious competition and become an Olympian. The competitor now feels that a lifetime of work has been lost due to being tested positive for the coronavirus at the Beijing Olympics. As a result, he and his partner of Russian descent, Ioulia Chtchetinina were unable to compete for Hungary during the two scheduled events on Friday and Saturday, writes szeretlekmagyarorszag.hu.

The athlete expressed that it was very painful that his dream ended in such a misfortunate way as he was so close to his goal, he even made it to Beijing. Before his departure, all his tests were negative, otherwise, he would not have been allowed to board the plane. Therefore, he had likely caught the virus while traveling.

Positive COVID-19 test

Upon his arrival, a sample was taken at Beijing Airport, and from there the Hungarian figure skater was transferred to the Olympic Village, where he waited for the result. He was later given another test and told that it was positive so he would be taken to a quarantine hotel.

The athlete has no symptoms whatsoever.

The quarantine can be lifted only if he produced two negative tests, but so far his latest test came back positive again, the sportsman said to nso.hu. The only hope left for the athlete is to be able to return with the rest of his team on Monday, as was originally planned.

His team members were tested negative

Both Márk Magyar’s coach and partner, Iulia Chtchetinin were tested negative but since they are considered close contacts, they will also have to produce two more negative tests until their departure.

The pair was sixth at the European Championships in Tallinn in January and 14th at last year’s World Championships.

Hungarian foundation for Covid orphans offered €494,000 support last year

Foundation for coronavirus orphans Regőczi Foundation

The Regőczi Foundation set up by President János Áder and First Lady Anita Herczegh will provide long-term and personalised support to children who have been orphaned or semi-orphaned due to Covid-19, the First Lady said on Friday.

Detailing the work carried out by the foundation in the past year, Herczegh told a conference that the Regőczi Foundation aimed to support children until they reached adulthood or completed their studies and began working.

This means that the foundation plans to be active for around 20 years, she said, adding that this required it to raise hundreds of millions of forints for its operations each year.

Herczegh said the foundation provided personalised support to children, offering them, among other things, scholarships, housing and social aid or financing transport fees.

The foundation also cooperates with the biggest Hungarian charity organisations, such as the Hungarian Red Cross, the Catholic Caritas, the Hungarian Baptist Aid, the Hungarian Interchurch Aid, the Hungarian Reformed Church Aid, the Hungarian Charity Service of the Order of Malta and the Charity Council, she said.

The Regőczi Foundation last year provided 176 million forints’ (EUR 494,100) worth of support to 1,004 children, Herczegh said. The foundation has so far received 1,200 applications, she said.

The foundation set up in spring 2021 was named after István Regőczi, a Catholic priest who took care of orphaned children throughout his life in the interwar period.

Hungary’s public debt ratio fell

Hungary’s public debt fell to 78.2 percent of GDP at the end of the fourth quarter, a first reading of data released by the National Bank of Hungary (NBH) on Friday shows.

The ratio dropped from 80.3 percent at the end of Q3 and 80.0 percent at the end of 2020. The finance ministry had forecast the debt ratio would reach 79.9 percent at year-end.

Hungary’s constitution stipulates that year-end public debt relative to GDP must decline until the ratio reaches 50 percent. Public debt ratios were in compliance with the rule until pandemic expenditures lifted the ratio by close to 15 percentage points in 2020.

In absolute terms, Hungary’s gross public debt reached 41,303 billion forints (EUR 116.0bn) at the end of 2021, climbing from 37,462 billion at the end of 2020.

The NBH data show the general government’s net financing requirement — a good approximation for the general government deficit — reached 1,936 billion forints in Q4, equivalent to 12.3 percent of quarterly GDP. For the full year, the net financing requirement was 3,980 billion forints, equivalent to 7.3 percent of GDP.

As we reported yesterday, Miklós Rusvai, a well-known Hungarian virologist, said that the epidemic could soon be over in Hungary. The expert added that Hungary passed the peak of daily new infections about two weeks ago, so the number of people hospitalised is now at its peak, and this is expected to slowly decrease.

According to Miklós Rusvai, considering the decreasing number of deaths and active infections which are well below the expected figures, Hungary is getting closer and closer to the end of the pandemic. As the Hungarian news portal ATV reported, the Hungarian virologist also said that

no further vaccination and restrictions are needed in the current epidemiological situation.

Based on MTI’s today report, altogether 100 patients died of a Covid-related illness over the past 24 hours, while 7,480 new coronavirus infections were registered, koronavirus.gov.hu said on Friday. So far 6,386,416 people have received a first jab, while 6,149,334 have been double-jabbed. Fully 3,781,740 Hungarians have received a booster shot.

The number of active infections stands at 199,303, while hospitals are treating 4,919 Covid-19 patients, 201 of whom are intubated on a ventilator.

Since the first outbreak, 1,746,424 have been registered with the virus, while 43,066 deaths have been recorded. Fully 1,504,055 people have made a recovery.

According to Miklós Rusvai, Hungary is getting closer and closer to the end of the pandemic. As a result, restrictions will be lifted soon here as well, similarly to other European countries.

The United Kingdom was the first in Europe to lift most of the restrictions, followed by Sweden which has recently announced that „the pandemic, at least as we know it, is over” – reported the Hungarian news portal Világgazdaság. Although the epidemiological situation in Hungary is not that promising at the moment, still we have some positive news. According to Miklós Rusvai, Hungarian virologist,

the epidemic could soon be over in Hungary.

The expert said that Hungary passed the peak of daily new infections about two weeks ago, so the number of people hospitalised is now at its peak, and this is expected to slowly decrease. He also emphasised that the majority of patients are hospitalised due to other complaints. In these cases, it only turns out after testing that the patients have coronavirus infection. Thus, these patients have mild symptoms.

According to Miklós Rusvai, considering the decreasing number of deaths and active infections which are well below the expected figures, Hungary is getting closer and closer to the end of the pandemic.

As the Hungarian news portal ATV reports, the Hungarian virologist also said that

no further vaccination and restrictions are needed in the current epidemiological situation.

“Those who have taken the vaccinate did the right thing, protecting themselves and preventing the spread of the epidemic, but those who haven’t gotten vaccinated so far obviously did not want to take the jab. I don’t see any point or reason for them to suddenly change their mind now,” he said.

As far as Hungarian immunity cards are concerned, the expert hopes that the deadline for the certificates will be extended again in May, after which they might no longer be needed. According to the virologist, restrictions will be lifted soon in Hungary as well, similarly to other countries. “With this fifth wave, Covid has actually released its poison in Hungary,” he said.

Although some claim that the coronavirus epidemic is coming to an end, WHO has recently pointed out that further waves and new sub-viruses could be on the way. The southern hemisphere is now entering the winter, which can bring new pandemic waves in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, South America. From September, a new mutant might occur in Europe as well that will come with flu-like symptoms.

As for protective measures, Rusvai would maintain the use of masks, especially in autumn, on a voluntary basis. Besides coronavirus, this can protect us against other diseases as well.

Hungarian researchers’ discovery: COVID came from a lab

laboratory coronavirus covid-19

Hungarian researchers from Eötvös Loránd University and the University of Veterinary Medicine made important discoveries. This new discovery brings humanity closer to finding out about the origins of the coronavirus.

Great discovery at Hungarian universities

Researchers at Eötvös Loránd University and the University of Veterinary Medicine have found interesting data. The data support the theory that

the coronavirus leaked from a laboratory.

So, the discovery suggests that the coronavirus came from a laboratory and did not spread from animals to humans naturally, writes the Daily Mail. Samples were taken in Antarctica between December 24, 2018, and January 13, 2019. These samples were forwarded to the Sangon Biotech laboratory in China.

“Thus, the ‘freedom of speech of the data’ forced us to modify the hypothesis, which I am very sorry about because it would have been a much more interesting scientific story and much less imbued with politics and a Chinese hamster,” said Professor István Csabai in a summary published on the university’s website.

This genetic material is not derived from living animals but from cell cultures often used in virological experiments.

Further research is needed

István Csabai, a professor at the Department of Complex Systems at Eötvös Loránd University, and Norbert Solymosi, associate professor at the University of Veterinary Medicine, found the sample. This sample was found in a public genetic sequence database that was subjected to bioinformatics analysis. They were looking for a sample that was collected before December 2019. In addition, it was important that the samples contain genomic traces of SARS-CoV-2.

Managing the amount of data was a huge technical challenge.

IT researchers were needed to solve this issue. They examined several different samples. Of these samples, soil samples from Antarctica were the most promising. It is not theoretically impossible for seals to carry the virus and for the virus to be then transmitted to the fish market in Wuhan through several infected fish.

However, the genetic traces are more likely to come from contaminants from other samples.

According to professor Csabai, we need further studies to more accurately identify the origin of the virus. However, research suggests that the virus most likely did not derive from humans, monkeys or hamsters but from cell cultures commonly used in virological experiments, blikk.hu writes.
