A huge barge has broken free on the Danube near Budapest, damaging several boats. Video, photos and details here

A barge collided with several smaller boats near the Margaret Bridge. We will keep you updated with details of the accident.

The police reported on the boat accident at Margaret Bridge. The Budapest Police Headquarters (BRFK) said that according to current information, the accident did not affect the bridge pier.

The BRFK told 444 that the barge was travelling uphill, i.e., against the direction of the Danube, when the rope of the push barge broke, causing the barge to turn. It then collided with a harbour where two other vessels were moored. It is claimed that it did not hit the Margaret Bridge (Margit híd). It’s important to note that there were no personal injuries in the collision.

Momentous construction to begin soon on Hungary’s southernmost Danube bridge

The new Danube bridge at Mohács

Construction on the Mohács Danube Bridge is set to commence in mid-October, following the official opening of the site at the end of September.

756-metre-long Danube bridge

The project, overseen by Duna Aszfalt Ltd, will involve the construction of a 756-metre-long bridge between Mohács and Újmohács. This will be Hungary’s southernmost bridge across the Danube. The project also includes the development of 28.8 kilometres of main roads, the construction of 13 reinforced concrete bridges, and other related infrastructure. A two-lane road will be built on the lowland side, while a four-lane road will be constructed on the Transdanubian side. Preparatory works, including archaeological excavations and demining, are expected to begin later this year, with major construction activities slated to start in early 2024.

According to MagyarÉpítők, preparations began in August when the contract between the Ministry of Construction and Transport and the contractor came into effect. Once the work permit is issued in October, construction will officially begin. Initial tasks, such as land acquisition and securing necessary permits, are already underway.

The new Danube bridge structure will consist of three spans with varying distances between the supports. It will feature steel arch bridges and suspension girders arranged in a grid pattern. The design was managed by SPECIÁLTERV Ltd, with major subcontractors including FŐMTERV Ltd, responsible for designing the road bridge, and UVATERV Ltd, which provided independent structural engineering services. Throughout the construction process, there will be a strong focus on employing modern technologies and enhancing energy efficiency, both of which are crucial for the project’s long-term sustainability.

Project objectives

The project aims to improve transport links between the two sides of the Danube and provide modern infrastructure to support the region’s development. This investment will not only stimulate the local economy but also contribute significantly to modernising the transport network in the region.

Good news: Train services resume on key railway line in Hungary after Danube flooding

esztergom-komárom train s74 máv train service

Starting Monday, 30 September, train services will resume between Esztergom and Komárom, eliminating the need for passengers to transfer to replacement buses on this route. The S74 trains will once again operate along the entire length of the line.

Train service resumes on key line

Following the receding of the Danube floodwaters, railway workers removed protective coverings and approximately 20,000 sandbags along the section between Lábatlan and Nyergesújfalu on the Esztergom–Komárom line, Economx reports. This stretch of the railway runs along the riverbank, doubling as part of the region’s flood defence infrastructure.

As part of the flood prevention efforts, the railway embankment was elevated near Tát to align it with the flood defence levee, aiding in water management, according to reports.

Before reopening the line, a full inspection of the railway tracks was conducted, including geotechnical assessments where necessary. Based on the findings, it was confirmed that train services can safely resume on the section that had been closed due to the flood defence measures.

Additionally, from 30 September, the previously closed section of Route 11 (Tát shortcut) affected by the flooding will also reopen. Bus services 812, 814, 817, 819, and the local T-route buses will return to their original routes, once again stopping at Táti út and Horgásztanya.

PHOTOS: Danube recedes, cleaning started in Budapest – UPDATED

Danube recedes, cleaning started in Budapest traffic

The receding of the Danube started in Hungary as the flood left the country after peaking in Mohács, South Hungary yesterday. The cleaning process after the flood began in the capital since the floodwater can be a hotbed for lethal diseases like diarrhoea, sepsis, etc. Here is our photo report.

PM Viktor Orbán announced yesterday in a fancy video uploaded to his social media sites that the flood protection efforts finished in Hungary because the Danube started to recede everywhere. Consequently, he changed his profile photo again on Facebook: no boots, more white hair and a wider smile, which you can check out below. You may watch the Reels video HERE.

In Budapest, authorities began the cleaning process since the floodwater occupied the wharves and quays. Moreover, in Csepel, it even reached an illegal landfill. Authorities said there were only construction waste and furniture, no dangerous chemicals, etc. According to the government-close Magyar Nemzet, the Government Office of Pest County said they would carry away the waste piled up on private property, the owner of which is currently in prison, according to 444.hu. Furthermore, PM Orbán said there should be changes in the relevant laws to handle such situations.

Former PM Gyurcsány slamming the government for the illegal landfill:

And here is a video:

During the flood, a lot of money has been spent on promoting Orbán’s Facebook posts. Based on Meta’s data, they spent more than HUF 45 million (EUR 113,000) on ads between 16 and 22 September. Compared with the HUF 11,5 million (EUR 29 thousand) spent between 25 June and 16 September, the increase was fourfold, 444.hu wrote.

Interior secretary: Danube receding in Hungary

The River Danube has fully peaked and is receding in Hungary, though flood alerts will stay in place until Saturday afternoon, an interior ministry official said on Wednesday.

The water level is receding along the entire section, but flood defence operations are still ongoing at 29 locations where the state is overseeing tasks and at another 41 locations managed by local councils, parliamentary state secretary Bence Rétvári told a press conference after a meeting of the operative body in charge of flood protection.

Great news! European Commission to provide huge flood aid package to Hungary – UPDATED with PM Orbán’s comments

Danube flood in Hungary flood aid

The announcement comes at a crucial time when several regions in Hungary are grappling with the aftermath of severe flooding.

Hungary is set to benefit from flexible measures introduced by the European Commission to address flood damage, a spokesperson confirmed on Monday, as reported by Telex. The EU’s president, Ursula von der Leyen, announced during a meeting in Wrocław, Poland, where she gathered with the prime ministers of Czechia, Poland, Austria, and Slovakia to discuss regional cooperation in disaster response.

The European Commission plans to make exceptions to several rules regarding the use of cohesion funds in flood-affected areas. These exceptions will allow funds to be utilised for pre-financing purposes and waive the requirement for public co-financing, which is typically necessary. Von der Leyen estimated that these measures could mobilise up to EUR 10 billion, providing a significant boost to recovery efforts in affected regions.

In addition to these measures, spokesperson Arianna Podesta confirmed that all affected member states, including Hungary, would be eligible for these facilitations, regardless of their representation in the meeting. Stefan de Keersmaecker, who oversees regional policy, noted that Hungary’s omission from the list of countries mentioned during the conference was merely due to the availability of damage data from those specific nations rather than any exclusion from the aid.

Flood aid: help for all EU countries

Hungary news flood in Budapest

The European Commission’s response to the disaster also includes requests for assistance through the Civil Protection Mechanism, which enables the swift deployment of critical resources such as medical teams, search and rescue units, and various types of equipment to the hardest-hit areas. Additionally, a special solidarity fund has been established for disaster situations, further reinforcing the EU’s commitment to supporting its member states during crises.

Podesta emphasised that member states must adjust their existing programs to reallocate resources effectively for recovery efforts. The specific spending of catch-up funds will be detailed in operational programs that the Hungarian government agreed upon with the European Commission in December 2022. These programs outline how funds can be directed to address the immediate needs arising from the floods.

While the newly introduced measures do not provide additional funding, they aim to expedite the absorption of available resources and streamline the recovery process. The waiver of co-financing is expected to lessen the financial burden on national budgets, making it easier for Hungary to respond effectively to the challenges posed by the recent flooding.

De Keersmaecker stated that it would ultimately be up to the member states to determine their spending priorities based on damage assessments and the amounts still available.

“Member states themselves will have to do this exercise if they want to start this procedure,”

he explained. Working collaboratively with their respective governments, they will be tasked with determining the next steps based on the evolving situation and the specific needs of their communities.

UPDATE – Hungary news

Orbán’s comments

Regarding the EU flood aid, PM Viktor Orbán said that Hungarians can always rely on themselves:

“What we can solve, we have solved. These funds are like “the dog’s dinner” (nothing): if they are given, we thank them, but we do not count on them.

He did not answer how much money the government would draw from this envelope.

Positive update from Hungarian government on the floods in Hungary

floods situation in Hungary

Hungary news: the upper section of the Danube is fast receding, and 510km were being protected on Monday, 200km less than the previous day, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán told a press conference. The latest news on the floods in Hungary:

The river is expected to peak at Mohács, in southern Hungary, and excess waters will flow out of the country during the day, Orbán said, adding that there will be fewer operative staff handling the floods starting Wednesday.

Rain this week is not expected to have an impact on the flood wave, and it is unlikely that any of the country’s rivers will burst their banks or the dykes protecting them.

Fully 40km of temporary levees have been constructed as part of the flood protection efforts on the Danube in 2024, and mobile dyke walls have been erected along more than 4,600m, Orbán said after the meeting of the flood protection operative body. He added that unused sandbags are being emptied, and used ones that have come into contact with water are being destroyed.

Chief medical officer Cecília Müller said the public road maintenance authority will disinfect roads between localities, and local authorities will be responsible for those within. Müller said several localities have detected bacteria and algae in the drinking water. She added that water must be boiled before being consumed there, and drinking water is being delivered by lorry.

PM Orbán about flood defence and migration-related fine – UPDATE

flood in Hungary Budapest 2024 orbán

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said on Monday that flood defence efforts in Hungary are nearing their end, adding that there is “every chance to be as optimistic as possible about the remaining couple of days.”

Flood defence in Hungary

“We have to hold out for another day and a half or two and then the country can breathe a sigh of relief,” the prime minister told a press conference after a meeting of the operative body for flood protection, adding that rain that could affect flood levels was not in the forecast.

Orbán said the Danube is expected to peak at Baja, in the southwest, at noon, with a third-degree, highest flood alert in place for that town, and a second-degree alert issued for Mohacs.

The Danube is receding quicker on its upper sections than anticipated, he said, adding that the pressure on the country was now easing.

The Danube’s water level receded 80 centimetres at Mosonmagyarovar in the northwest, 136cm at Esztergom in the north, 92cm at Vac, north of Budapest, 74cm in Budapest and 17cm at Dunaujvaros, he said. Meanwhile, the Raba receded 130cm at Gyor, he added.

Orbán noted that flood defence operations were carried out along 755 kilometres on Saturday and just 706 kilometres on Sunday. Flood alerts were only in place along 223 kilometres, he added.

Orbán said 5,025 people were involved in the flood protection efforts on Saturday, and only 4,458 on Sunday. Just 195 volunteers are taking part in the work now. The total number of sandbags used in the defence work came to 1,903,100.

The prime minister said that in Budapest, Margaret Island and the Batthyany Square metro station could be re-opened to traffic.

The water has also begun receding in Kisapostag, south of the capital, he said, adding that the situation at Dunafoldvar, Madocsa and Paks was “all right”.

In response to a question, Orbán said the work of the state bodies was reflected in the results. He said the waters had been kept confined to the riverbeds, and only the Leitha had to be released along one section.

Whereas the peak water levels on the Danube did not exceed the all-time record, the Leitha’s peak level marked its highest recorded water levels, he said, adding that the section in question had been protected by the opening of an emergency reservoir.

“If the water stays in the riverbed, then there’s no problem and the flood defence is successful,” Orbán said.

He said the matter of flood defence along certain river sections falling under the competence of the state and other sections under that of the local council had not caused any problems.

“It turns out that when there’s trouble, Hungarians are capable of protecting their localities by applying a flexible interpretation of the legal framework and helping each other,” the prime minister said, adding that he had “nothing but the best” to say about the cooperation among those who had participated in the defence work.

Orbán also said plans were in place for the winding down of flood defence efforts, and that all the necessary tasks have been completed.

He said that once the flood waves have receded the focus will be on public health tasks.

Orbán noted that the total cost of this year’s flood protection efforts is expected to come to around 5 billion forints (EUR 12.7m) compared with the 19.6 billion forints spent in 2013.

Asked about possible mistakes that might have been made, Orbán said the work of the state bodies was reflected in the results. “Hungary 1, Danube floods 0,” he added.

Once the waters recede, he said, they will evaluate the defence work and determine the areas where building a permanent flood barrier may be worthwhile. At the same time, he called for “continued discipline” over the next two days.

Migration-related fine

In response to another question, Orbán said the “migration-related fine” imposed on Hungary by Brussels “has been collected” from the companies operating in the country, adding that the fine would not be covered by the Hungarian people.

Debate with Péter Magyar?

Asked about a proposed debate with Péter Magyar, the leader of the opposition Tisza Party, Orbán said he always gave an answer when he had something to say, and the place for debates was parliament. He said there was a time and place for debates outside the legislative assembly, adding that there would be a time for it, “but it isn’t now”.

Flood defence efforts

Bence Rétvári, the interior ministry’s parliamentary state secretary, told the press conference that law enforcement officials are on duty at 59 sites to assist with flood defence efforts. There are units dispatched to 50 spots under full road closures and another two under half lane restriction, Retvari said.

The disaster management authority is operating 95 water pumps, he said, adding that drinking water was continuously monitored for quality.

He said local councils were advised on the handling of sandbags.

In the context of the situation in Europe, Retvári noted that floods have claimed 28 lives in neighbouring countries but none so far in Hungary.

István Láng, the head of Hungary’s Water Management Directorate, said the Danube was expected to peak at Baja, in the southwest, during the day, adding that all protection measures were in place. The authorities are also fully prepared for the flooding to peak at Báta, Bár, Dunaszekcső, Madocsa and Mohács. He said there was an emergency preparedness on the Leitha river.

Eszter Vitályos, the government spokeswoman, called the overall collaboration in flood defence “exemplary” and preventing the closure of highway 11 in the north “a great achievement”.

UPDATE

Orbán inspects flood defence efforts in Baja

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán inspected flood defence efforts on the Danube in the southern town of Baja on Monday, as water levels were expected to peak.

Orbán made the inspection with Róbert Zsigó, the electoral district’s MP, and Bernadett Bari Kálmán, the town’s mayor-elect.

The prime minister was briefed on the flood situation by water management experts, who said flood defense efforts are underway along 2,800 meters on Petőfi Island. Because a part of the defence line had been left in place after the 2013 floods, less than half of it had to be built this time. The flood barrier was completed by Friday evening thanks to the efforts of firefighters, local council workers and volunteers, and was reinforced with sandbags.

Sandbags were also placed at other crucial points on the island. Heavy machinery and 130 firefighters are also on standby.

“We’re prepared for the defence work needed in the coming hours,” Orbán said.

The prime minister and the mayor-elect agreed that in future Baja will be protected by mobile dams instead of temporary ones.

Based on a statement issued by the Budapest Transport Company (BKK), the metro will touch the Batthyány Square metro station from tomorrow again. Authorities plan to withdraw additional traffic restrictions next week. The Danube peaked at Budapest yesterday at 5 AM at 830 cm, a bit below what authorities had calculated before.

According to hvg.hu, trains commuting on metro line M2 will halt again from early tomorrow at the Battyány Square metro station. The water level of the Danube started to decrease today after yesterday’s peaking. Authorities calculate a long receding time. Orbán said the dams had to endure the immense pressure until next Thursday.

BKK added that passengers would not be able to use the H5 suburban railway line from Budapest’s Batthány Square station to Szentendre on Monday and Tuesday. You may get on the trains only at the Margaret Bridge HÉV station.

More traffic restrictions will be withdrawn next week

Based on recent forecasts, tram nr 19 will carry passengers on its entire line from 24 September, just like tram nr 41.

From 25 September, you may travel with the H5 suburban railway from the Batthyány Square station. Furthermore, the bike lane running under the Margaret Bridge will also be reopened.

BKK said experts continuously monitored the water level and would decide about additional traffic restrictions accordingly.

Budapest mayor Karácsony: Capital passes flood defence test

budapest danube flooding defence (1)

Budapest has “passed the flood defence test”, Gergely Karácsony, the city’s mayor, told a press conference held near the River Danube on Saturday.

Capital passes flood defence test

Karácsony said the river had peaked in Budapest and was now below morning levels. “We’re past the hard part, but it’s not over yet. We have lots of work ahead of us,” he added.

He said flood defence investments undertaken in recent years had held up well, adding that more projects were planned in future, in the north of the capital, with the support of European Union funding.

He praised the citizens of Budapest and the cooperation between the local government and state organisations. “It appears that in times like these, political disputes can be put aside,” he added.

Karácsony said flood restrictions would be lifted “as soon as possible”, but added that “safety comes first”.

The embankment roads may be re-opened in the second half of the coming week, he said in response to a question.

Danube flood in Hungary flood aid

Flood warnings continue, with record near-record water levels in several places in Hungary:

Flood defence capabilities are a lot more developed than in 2013

Although Hungary is facing the biggest flood since the one in 2013 it has a lot more developed flood defence capabilities than eleven years ago, the parliamentary state secretary of the interior ministry told a press briefing on the flood situation on Tuesday.
The peak water levels are expected to exceed last week’s levels by 6-6.5 metres in the Szigetkoz, the Danube Bend and Budapest, Bence Rétvári said. Rivers will carry 400 percent more water at their peak this week, he said.

Since 2013, the country’s flood defence system has been significantly improved with 150 billion forints (EUR 380.4m) worth of development projects completed, he said. Those included the upgrade of dikes, the construction of facilities helping flood defence, building rainwater storages and a clean-up of riverbeds, Rétvári added.

He noted that defence operations were ongoing along a 390km river section and at 35 settlements coordinated by local mayors and supported by the disaster management and water management authorities. Police have dispatched officers to nine sites who arrange road closures and are also filling sandbags, Retvari added. He said schools, health-care and social institutions operate uninterrupted. “State leaders participating in flood defence have postponed all of their international obligations for as long as the situation is difficult at the dams,” Retvari said.

István Láng, the head of Hungary’s Water Management Directorate, said the Danube is forecast to peak at a level 30-50cm below the level of the 2013 flood. All of the affected municipalities have arranged for the setting up of dikes which are nearly half-way ready, he said, adding that they will be fully completed by the time the rivers peak.

The directorate has assigned an additional staff of 298 to be on duty along the 1,500km state-managed defence line, arranged for the delivery of 2 million sandbags and the distribution of more than 1 million sandbags to local governments, Lang said.

Leitha

He said the Leitha river is expected to peak at Mosonmagyaróvár on Wednesday night.

Danube

Láng added that the Danube is expected to peak at Szigetköz on Thursday morning, at Győr in the evening that day, at Komárom on Friday morning, and in Esztergom on Friday afternoon. On Saturday, the river is expected to peak at Nyergesfalu in the early morning, at Vác later on, and in Budapest on Saturday evening.

As we wrote earlier, Cyclone Boris not only brought heavy rain, but also high winds and reached the ‘Hungarian sea’, details HERE.

Flood defence operation under way along 540 km

Flood defence operations are under way along 540 kilometres on Hungary’s rivers with the highest, third-degree alert in place along 200 kilometres, the prime minister said on Tuesday.

Viktor Orbán said in a video posted on Facebook that based on reports received in the morning the most serious situation had developed along the Leitha river.

“This necessitated a dispach of a staff of more than 800 experts from Hungary’s central regions to the west where those people are working in cooperation with Hungarian troops and are doing an excellent job,” Orbán said.

He said that currently there are 400 Hungarian soldiers working at the dams, adding that several thousand more troops stood ready to be deployed in 24 hours, if need be. “But for the time being we are able to tackle the situation with the manpower mobilised and with the help of enthusiastic volunteers,” the prime minister said.

PM approves opening of emergency reservoir along Leitha

PM Orbán on Tuesday inspected the flood defence work along the Leitha river where he and MP István Nagy were briefed on the protection efforts in the region by water and disaster management experts.

The prime minister gave his approval for opening the emergency reservoir between the Leitha’s main embankment and the left-bank channel. The opening of the emergency reservoir ensures that the water will not break through the primary defence lines and guarantees the safety of Mosonmagyaróvár and its residents, the statement said.

Later on Tuesday, Orbán visited the flood prevention works in Neszmély and Komárom, in north-western Hungary. He and Judit Bertalan Czunyi, the region’s MP, visited those building the defences on the Danube bank, Havasi said.

Budapest Fidesz calls for free public transport in Budapest during floods

Alexandra Szentkirályi, the leader of ruling Fidesz’s Budapest chapter, has called on the mayor of Budapest to ensure free use of the city’s public transport services during the closure of the embankments of the Danube due to the flood.

She said in a Facebook post on Tuesday that traffic in Budapest has slowed down due to flood protection measures.

“We ask Mayor Gergely Karácsony to arrange for allowing the public to use services operated by Budapest Transport Centre (BKK) free of charge and promote the use of public transportation means by car owners.”

Szentkirályi did not say whether the government would compensate for lost revenue during the period when public transport would be free in Budapest.

UPDATE: Budapest mayor says they are prepared for peak flood levels

Budapest is prepared to handle the Danube’s peak flood levels, Gergely Karácsony, the city’s mayor, has said, adding that all flood defence work will be completed by noon on Thursday.

The most intense flood defence work is being carried out along Nánási-Királyok Road in the third district, Margaret Island and the area around the Dagály baths at the northern Pest embankment, Karácsony said in a post on Facebook.

On Nanasi-Kiralyok Road, a clay levee is being built along several kilometres, the mayor said. On Margaret Island, 800,000 sandbags are being filled, he said, noting that the island has been closed to traffic from Margaret Bridge and will likely also be closed from the direction of Arpad Bridge. Meanwhile, a mobile dam will be built near the Dagaly baths, he added.

The bridges leading to Hajogyari Island will be closed and power to the island will be cut, Karácsony said.

The floods are also expected to cause delays in public transport, with the tram lines along the Danube being the main ones to be affected, he added.

Karácsony thanked those contributing to the flood protection efforts.

Extreme flood reached Hungary: Danube bridge, border crossing closed, ferry service halted, train service changed

Extreme flood reached Hungary

Storm Boris brought catastrophic floods to Central Europe, including Hungary’s Danube water system. Experts believe that Western parts like the Szigetköz and the settlements near River Leitha are in the greatest danger. Still, Budapest and other settlements also tirelessly prepare for extreme water levels. Based on the authorities’ decisions, parts of a Hungarian town may be deluged in case of emergency to prevent further damage. Meanwhile, a border crossing and a Danube bridge are already closed due to the flooding.

Danube to peak at 860 cm

According to portfolio.hu, Gabriella Siklós, a spokesperson of the General Directorate of Water Management, said locals in Western Hungary work to defend their settlements against the floodings caused by Storm Boris. She said all their crew work in the defence system at the rivers Danube and Leitha. She added that the Danube in Budapest is anticipated to peak on Saturday with 860 centimetres. In case of emergency, the General Directorate of Water Management will decide to let some water out, which may result in increased damages in some parts of Mosonmagyaróvár, she added.

According to 24.hu, the ferry commuting between Vác and Tahitótfalu will cease operation until Wednesday or Thursday. There, the Danube is expected to rise above 772 centimetres.

Border crossing, Danube bridge closed due to flood

A journalist team of index.hu could not cross the Hungarian-Slovakian border yesterday due to the flooding. The closure started at 1 PM yesterday. Attila Szegi, another spokesperson of the General Directorate of Water Management, highlighted that the water level will reach the bridge. Thus, his colleagues try to protect it with sandbags. However, a lot depends on the amount of precipitation falling in Austria. In Nagybajcs, authorities expect a peaking at 850 centimetres. If they are right, the Danube level would be 40-50 centimetres below the 2013 record level.

Train schedules changed

We wrote HERE that Hungary’s train connection with Vienna ceased to exist for days due to Boris. According to turizmus.com, ÖBB said the connections might be reestablished by 18 or 19 September. Furthermore, Metropol EN trains between Budapest, Warsaw and Berlin will not commute until 19 September. On 16 and 17 September, Metropol EuroNight (EN 476) will only commute to Breclav and back. You may reach Austria with GYSEV trains, but they only commute to Neufeld an der Leitha and Pamhagen. As a result, you cannot reach Vienna or even Neusiedl am See from Hungary.

Here are two videos of the dangerous situation in Bratislava (Pozsony), where authorities expect peaking at 950 centimetres:

But what is behind all these extremities?

Scientists keep warning about the dangers a changing climate poses for every country. In the case of the Carpathian Basin, researchers say the previously dominating Western winds weakened allowing Northern frosts and Southern heat to conquer the region. As a result, crops can get fatally damaged or similar weather anomalies can occur more frequently.

A week ago temperature maximums were broken. On Sunday, the 112-year-old Budapest minimum temperature and maximum wind record broke with only 9.4 degrees Celsius (48.92 degrees Fahrenheit) on the János hill, while in Siófok, the wind speed reached 105 km/h. Boris decimates the swallow population, as well.

Budapest riverbanks to close on Monday evening, mayor warns of prolonged flood

danube riverbanks closed budapest

In response to rising water levels on the Danube, Budapest authorities are preparing for serious flooding by closing the city’s riverbanks and reinforcing defences on Margaret Island with sandbags. Mayor Gergely Karácsony has warned residents to expect a significant and prolonged flood, with the capital’s flood defence status raised to the highest alert level starting Monday.

Budapest riverbanks to be closed

In a video posted on Facebook, Mayor Karácsony expressed concern that the upcoming flood could last for an extended period due to continuous rainfall in the Danube’s catchment area.

Starting at 8 PM on Monday, both the Pest and Buda lower riverbanks will be closed to the public.

According to the mayor’s office, the flood alert level will increase to third degree as of Monday, based on updated forecasts. The latest projections suggest that water levels could rise by one meter per day in Budapest, with the river potentially cresting above 8 meters by midweek.

Given the severity of the situation, Mayor Karácsony announced that as of midnight on Monday, flood defences will be ramped up citywide. The city’s flood management team will implement a number of measures in response to the rising water.

Among the planned actions, the Budapest Sewage Works Company (Fővárosi Csatornázási Művek, FCSM) will close flood barriers along Nánási and Királyok roads and construct a four-kilometre-long clay embankment, standing one meter tall and four meters wide. As a result, Királyok Road will be closed to traffic starting Monday, Economx reports.

On Margaret Island, lower-lying areas will be fortified with sandbags, with high-powered machinery brought in to assist. If necessary, authorities may also close the island entirely to both vehicles and pedestrians later in the week.

Floodwaters are expected to reach the lower riverbanks on Tuesday, 17 September. Sections of the Pest embankment, already closed for a weekend event, will remain shut until floodwaters recede. Additionally, the entirety of the Pest and Buda lower riverbanks will close from 8 PM on Monday. From midnight on Saturday, parking along the riverbanks will be prohibited, with any remaining vehicles towed away by the city’s enforcement agency on Monday.

Public transportation in flood-prone areas along the river could also be affected, with further details to be announced early next week, depending on how the situation develops.

UPDATE

16 September, 2024.

Highest-level flood alert in effect in Budapest

Attention: Major flood protection alert declared in Budapest amid rising Danube levels, roads closed

danube flood budapest

A major flood protection alert has been declared in Budapest. According to the latest forecasts, the Danube’s water level is expected to rise by one meter each day starting Monday. Projections indicate that the river could peak in the latter half of next week, with water levels exceeding 8 meters. Given this significant rise, Budapest Mayor Gergely Karácsony has announced a third-degree flood protection alert for all Budapest sections of the river, starting at midnight on Monday, 16 September, as stated by the Mayor’s Office.

According to an article by Portfolio, the Municipal Sewage Works (Fővárosi Csatornázási Művek, FCSM), responsible for flood defences, will begin closing the flood gates along the Nánási-Királyok Road defence line and constructing a four-kilometre-long clay embankment starting Monday.

Due to this temporary barrier, Királyok Road will be closed to traffic.

On Margaret Island, especially in its lower-lying areas, flood defences will be reinforced with sandbags. FCSM will use high-capacity machinery for this, drawing on experience from the 2013 flood defence efforts.

If the situation worsens, Margaret Island may also be closed to both vehicle and pedestrian traffic by mid-next week.

The lower embankments on the Pest side are expected to flood by Tuesday, September 17. Some sections, already closed for an event over the weekend, will remain shut until the floodwaters recede. Additionally, Budapest Road Management (Budapest Közút) will fully close the remaining Pest embankments and all of the Buda lower embankments from 8 PM on Monday, 16 September.

Parking on the embankments has already been banned as of midnight today. Any vehicles left there will be towed away by the city’s Law Enforcement Directorate (Fővárosi Önkormányzati Rendészeti Igazgatóság) on Monday.

Meanwhile, Budapest Waterworks (Fővárosi Vízművek) is taking necessary precautions to ensure that the rising Danube does not disrupt the city’s drinking water supply. They have begun intensified inspections of wells, pump houses, and machinery to ensure continued safe operation despite the rising water levels, Portfolio reports. The quality of drinking water is being continuously monitored by the company’s laboratories.

Public transport in areas close to the river will likely face restrictions by mid-next week, depending on how the situation develops. Experts will determine the specific extent of these disruptions early next week, according to the Mayor’s Office.
