Year-round tourism: the new face of Lake Balaton

The aim of the Balaton Tourism Association is to make the region a vibrant tourist centre throughout the year. With the “1,000 Reasons for Lake Balaton” campaign, they aim to demonstrate that the lakeside offers a wealth of experiences even in winter. The campaign seeks to create many permanent jobs and reduce seasonal fluctuations.

According to Péter Princzinger, CEO of VisitBalaton365, the region will offer more than 1,500 services and 80 festivals by 2025, proving that Lake Balaton has something new to offer in every season. The autumn and winter programmes will help transform the lakeside into a lively destination even after the summer.

Gastronomic festivals and traditional programmes

According to Világgazdaság, traditional events will be held in several towns across the region, including the Torkos Tomaj Carnival on the 8th of February in Badacsonytomaj, where a traditional pig slaughter will take centre stage. Meanwhile, the 12th Fonyód Sausage Festival, one of the most important culinary events on the south coast, will take place from the 7th to the 9th of February. Visitors to these events can enjoy fresh sausages and other local delicacies.

On the 15th of February, the 16th Révfülöpi Rianás will be held in Révfülöp, which last year featured a spectacular pig slaughter and a mulled wine competition. Similar traditional events are planned for this year.

On the 22nd of February, Keszthely will host the 24th Keszthely Municipal Carnival, one of the region’s most enjoyable and colourful events. Carnival revellers dressed in vibrant costumes will fill the streets. On the same day, the 6th Balaton Bringa Carnival will take place in Balatonfüred, featuring a special costume-themed bike ride.

Also on the 22nd of February, the 5th Flúgos Race will be held in Balatonlelle, where cars and other vehicles will be decorated in special costumes. Kishegy in Lelle will also take part, offering culinary experiences, wine tasting, and local gastronomic specialities.

The villages around Lake Balaton are providing more and more opportunities for ice-skating enthusiasts. The first artificial ice rink opened in Balatonlelle on the 30th of November, and eight other villages have since followed suit. These rinks are popular with both locals and tourists, especially in recent years, as skating tourism has boomed. Although natural ice has not formed in many years, artificial ice rinks continue to attract visitors with a variety of activities and quality services.

Lake Balaton in winter offers countless opportunities for those seeking a different kind of experience. Whether it’s carnival festivities, gastronomic delights, ice skating, or simply exploring the winter charm of the lakeside villages, Lake Balaton has something for everyone. The ever-expanding range of activities ensures that the region remains an attractive destination all year round, not just in summer.

Education Expo in Budapest

It is a good thing to attend university in Hungary today, the culture and innovation minister said at the Educatio expo in Budapest on Saturday, adding that being a university student today was “cool”.

Hungarian higher education institutions are “excellent”

Hungarian higher education institutions are “excellent” and are at the sharp end of the international field, Balázs Hankó said. Currently 12 Hungarian universities are in the top five percent in the global rankings, three are in the top two percent and one in the top one percent, the minister said. He added that it was a realistic goal to have at least one Hungarian university ranked among the world’s top 100 institutions and several among the top 100 European universities by 2030.

There are 330,000 students in Hungarian higher education today, 46,000 of whom are international students, Hanko said, pointing out that Hungarian universities are also competitive at an international level. As regards scholarships, he said an annual allocation of 100 billion forints (EUR 241.8m) to 50 scholarship programmes reaches around 260,000 students, and these schemes are constantly being expanded.

University degree means shorter job finding time

He said that the Pannónia Programme has so far helped some 3,000 Hungarian students take courses at the world’s leading universities, and that number will reach 8,000 by the end of this academic year.

The minister said those with higher-education degrees find jobs in 42 days on average. The government, he noted, had a six-year financing contract with the universities. Speaking with students at the ministry’s stand at the expo, Hankó said the aim was for Hungarian universities to offer practice-oriented training.

Veronika Varga-Bajusz, the state secretary for higher education and adult training, said the government currently spends 11 billion forints on academic scholarships, reaffirming that it was worth reviewing the current system and developing a motivating scholarship system.

Kazakhstan–Hungary Roundtable breaks new ground in trade and investment

On December 12, 2024, a roundtable titled “Kazakhstan – Hungary: New Trends of Trade and Investment Cooperation” was held in Budapest. The event was organized by the Embassy of Kazakhstan in Hungary in collaboration with Kazakh Invest, supported by HEPA (Hungarian Export Promotion Agency) and the Hungarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MKIK).

The roundtable became a logical continuation of the positive momentum following the state visit of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, to Hungary on November 19-20, 2024. This visit, which included a meeting between the Head of State and leaders of Hungary’s top companies, was a significant milestone in strengthening Kazakh-Hungarian relations. “Strong economic and cultural ties bind our countries. Today’s event is a key step toward strengthening mutual cooperation, creating new investment projects, and building a strategic partnership”,

said Abzal Saparbekuly, Ambassador of Kazakhstan to Hungary.

During the roundtable, key topics were discussed, including the development of infrastructure and logistics, joint projects in the agro-industrial complex, nuclear energy, digital transformation, and opportunities in education.

Hungarian companies actively cooperating with Kazakhstan, such as MOL Group, UBM Group, L.A.C. Holding, Elitmag, Alfaseed, MVM Group, and I-Cell, were highlighted. These companies are already implementing successful projects in energy, logistics, agriculture, and digital technologies.

“Kazakhstan has become one of our most active and valuable partners in Central Asia. The foundation of our successful cooperation lies in two key factors: mutual respect for the past and a shared aspiration for the future. Kazakhstan is making impressive progress in innovation, sustainable development, and financial technologies, creating a strong basis for our continued partnership”, emphasized Dr. Csaba Kandrács, Deputy Governor of the Hungarian National Bank.

“Collaboration with Kazakhstan opens unique opportunities for Hungarian entrepreneurs. We are proud to contribute to the development of joint projects and the strengthening of economic ties between our countries”, said Gábor Jenei, CEO of HEPA.

“The projects we are implementing jointly with Kazakhstan in logistics and infrastructure not only strengthen trade connections but also contribute to the development of new transport routes between our countries”, noted László Horváth, President of L.A.C. Holding.

Many companies expressed their willingness to expand their presence in Kazakhstan and plan to introduce innovative technologies into joint projects.

“Kazakhstan is a strategic partner in the agro-industrial sector. The country’s opportunities, resources, and government support make Kazakhstan a unique destination for investments”, said Péter Horváth, CEO of UBM Group.

“The agro-industrial sector is not just business but the key to food security. Kazakhstan has already established itself as an agricultural hub in Central Asia, and in the next 5-7 years, we will witness this position strengthening even further”, noted András Sándorfy, Managing Director of Elitmag.

Dávid Békési, Director General of International Relations and Development of the Hungarian University of Agricultural and Life Sciences (MATE), said in his speech that they are open to cooperation with foreign universities in the field of education, as they already have a relationship with a Kazakh university.

He stressed that MATE welcomes foreign students who want to study in Europe, and of course, they also welcome students from Kazakhstan to take the knowledge they have gained here back home after graduation.

László Vasa, an expert from the Hungarian Institute of International Affairs, contributed to the discussion by offering an analytical perspective on the prospects for bilateral partnership.

As the Organizers said, this roundtable confirmed the mutual interest of Kazakhstan and Hungary in deepening their partnership, opening new horizons for economic cooperation. More than 70 participants, including government officials, leading companies, and experts from Kazakhstan and Hungary, attended. Mátyás Kohán, a foreign policy observer for the Hungarian weekly Mandiner, moderated the event.

From orphanage to Notre Dame: A Hungarian carpenter’s incredible role in the restoration of the cathedral

In 2019, Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris was ravaged by a catastrophic fire that severely damaged iconic parts of the historic structure, such as the central tower and roof. The restoration of this centuries-old masterpiece quickly turned into a monumental international effort, drawing on expertise from around the world.

Among those involved was Árpád Rostás, a Hungarian master carpenter whose exceptional talent came to the attention of the French Embassy. The embassy encouraged him to apply for the Notre Dame restoration project, and Rostás did not disappoint. To demonstrate his skills, he restored a crumbling chair from 1880. His impeccable craftsmanship impressed the French experts, who received his work with deep appreciation and admiration.

The path to Notre Dame

According to Origo, Árpád Rostás’s path to international recognition was anything but smooth. Raised in an orphanage, he discovered his passion for carpentry at a very young age. His early fascination with woodcarving became the foundation of his future career. However, passion alone was not enough. Over decades, Rostás honed his craft by studying under master carpenters, learning their secrets and refining his artistry. Rostás’s perseverance, unique vision and deep knowledge eventually earned him a reputation as one of the world’s finest craftsmen.

More than just a carpenter, Árpád Rostás is a master restorer of antique wooden furniture and a leading expert in inlay work. His creations and restorations grace some of the world’s most prestigious landmarks, including the Carmelite Monastery, the Louvre in Paris, Schönbrunn Palace and the Palace of Versailles. He even designed an exquisite cradle for Princess Catherine’s daughter, further cementing his reputation as a craftsman of unrivalled calibre.

The restoration of the cathedral

For the restoration of Notre-Dame, Rostás sourced centuries-old wood from Hungary, salvaged from the ruins of a castle cellar he had purchased. This rare, meticulously selected wood was essential to ensure the authenticity of the restoration. Rostás’ meticulous attention to detail and commitment to restoring the furniture to its original splendour brought the pieces back to their golden age.

Árpád Rostás’ work on Notre Dame has become a source of immense pride, not only for French professionals, but also for the people of Hungary. Rostás’s contributions extend beyond the Notre Dame project; his exceptional skill has left its mark on some of the world’s most treasured landmarks. More than a craftsman, Rostás is an artist whose dedication and talent are a testament to the enduring power of human ingenuity. Árpád Rostás’ legacy is a reminder that the work of skilled artisans can create a legacy that resonates on a global scale.

One of France’s most iconic cultural symbols, Notre Dame is set to reopen to the public in December 2024, five and a half years after the devastating fire. Although the Notre Dame project was originally scheduled to be completed before the Paris Olympics, precision was more important than speed. The reopening ceremony, attended by President Emmanuel Macron and other dignitaries, marked a triumph of craftsmanship and determination. Funded by more than EUR 840 million in donations, the restoration of the cathedral also serves as a beacon for future investment in cultural heritage.

Astonishing Szeged Christmas fair opened: it is much cheaper than Budapest – PHOTOS

Szeged Christmas fair

Szeged is just 2.5 hours away from Budapest by train and 2 hours by car if you travel on motorway M5. The southern Hungarian town is called the “City of Sunshine” since the number of sunny days is the highest there in Hungary. In December, you should not miss the city’s astonishing Christmas fair. Szeged Christmas fair is cheaper than the ones in Budapest and offers multiple attractions, including the Szeged Eye, and the same traditional Hungarian foods. Only the mulled wine is more expensive than in the capital.

Everything is cheaper at the Szeged Christmas fair except for mulled wine

Telex compared the prices in Budapest and Szeged with the help of a journalist working for Szegeder, a local media outlet. According to László Botka, the mayor of Szeged, they turned on the lights of the Christmas fair on Friday. Furthermore, light trains started to carry passengers in the city. According to Telex, many people visited the fair on the first day. They were curious about the new attractions and hoped to taste traditional Hungarian drinks and foods like lángos, chimney cake and mulled wine.

Telex wrote that only mulled wine is more expensive in the town’s Christmas fair than in Budapest. One dl costs EUR 1.5, several cents more than Budapest’s two main fairs, the Advent Bazilika (chosen as Europe’s all-time best) and the Vörösmarty Square.

Meanwhile, a plain lángos costs less than EUR 3, and if you choose to eat it traditionally, with sour cream and cheese, you still only have to pay EUR 5. A pancake costs EUR 1.25, eight mini doughnuts are EUR 4.5, and 12 is EUR 5. Extra lyophilised raspberries cost EUR 1.5.

If in Szeged, you should try the Szeged Eye

Strudel costs only EUR 2.5, while, in Budapest, you have to pay almost EUR 4 for it. Roasted chestnuts are also cheaper in Szeged, the price is almost 50% lower than in Budapest. The same goes for the chimney cake (less than EUR 4).

Except for the mulled wine, all drinks at the Szeged Christmas fair are cheaper than in Budapest. For example, tea costs half the price in Budapest, and the same goes for soft drinks and mineral water. Pálinka is also discounted compared to Budapest, but it is better to buy in larger quantities (4cl instead of 2cl).

The Szeged Eye is a popular destination for all visitors. Ticket prices have increased by EUR 1.25. The adult ticket costs EUR 7.5, while the kids have to pay EUR 5.5.

Special Japanese-Hungarian storytelling collaboration in Budapest – PHOTOS

On November 5, Tuesday, Hungarian storytelling met Japanese Rakugo through a special international collaboration hosted by the Hungarian National Theater and co-organized by The Japan Foundation, Budapest.

With the goal of opening an international dialogue between the art of storytelling in different nations, The Japan Foundation, Budapest invited Rakugo performer, Master Shinoharu Tatekawa and Rakugo researcher from Kanagawa University, Professor Kimie Oshima to Budapest. Here they were joined by the legendary Hungarian storyteller Mr. András Berecz. The performance took place on a very memorable day, as later in that same evening Mr. Berecz went on to receive the prestigious Artist of the Nation Award.

In the first half of the program, the audience had the opportunity to watch a performance from both storytellers. Since Rakugo has many specificities that the Hungarian audience might not have been familiar with, before Mstr. Shinoharu took the stage, Prof. Oshima held a brief presentation about Rakugo in general. To give the reader the gist of it, Rakugo is traditional Japanese humorous storytelling that was originally created by monks to make it easier for their religious teachings to reach the general public by wrapping them up in humorous stories. Rakugo is performed sitting down, by one person only, using the limited tools of a handkerchief and a folding fan.

After that, Mstr. Shinoharu took the stage and performed a traditional Rakugo piece, Tea Ceremony, the story of a rich but uneducated man and his servant who takes on holding tea ceremonies as a hobby in order to appear sophisticated, but they have absolutely no clue as to how to brew tea.

Next, it was time for a Hungarian story. Mr. Berecz performed his piece, Angyalfütty, a story of how an angel falling from heaven led to the creation of dance and different dance styles down here on Earth. The highlight of the performance was how Mr. Berecz involved his Japanese interpreter in the demonstration. Although shy at first, she became also a performer.

Storytelling roundtable discussion

In the second half of the program, the two worlds of storytelling finally met in the form of a roundtable discussion between Mstr. Shinoharu and Mr. Berecz, moderated by Prof. Oshima. As expected from the two participants who are masters of humor, the discussion was just as funny and entertaining as the performances themselves. It was also very insightful, both the participants and the audience wished it could have gone on for twice as long. However, it was time to send Mr. Berecz off so he could receive the highest honor an artist can be awarded in Hungary.

Before returning to Japan the next day, Mstr. Shinoharu and Prof. Oshima held a workshop at Károli Gáspár University of the Reformed Church, one of the few universities in Hungary where students can major in Japanese Studies. The workshop was open to the public but was conducted entirely in Japanese. The students got to try their hands at Rakugo storytelling, many of them bravely took the stage and gave short performance in their second language.

“The exceptional milestones achieved during SIBF 2024 mark a significant addition to Sharjah’s cultural journey. Welcoming 1.82 million visitors and hosting over 2,500 publishers and exhibitors from across the globe has elevated the event from a book fair to a dynamic and thriving book community. It is now a fully-fledged cultural ecosystem, bringing together creators, readers, and all key stakeholders in the literary and publishing sectors.”

In response to a question from our news portal, Al Ameri said that they are trying to reach out to the European communities living here and are also trying to create multilingualism. He stressed that the interest from Europeans is also growing every year, and the selection of the invited guests is also made to include writers and poets of interest to Europeans and Americans.

Publishers from Ukraine, Serbia and Austria, Hungary’s neighbours, and a Slovenian chef were also present, so CEE was represented, and Daily News Hungary and Helló Magyar represented the Hungarian press.

Milestones crossed

The fair spotlighted Algerian author Ahlam Mosteghanemi as the Cultural Personality of the Year for her contributions to Arabic literature. Ecuador’s floral wonders: The enigmatic orchids take centre stage in Budapest

On November 14, 2024, the “Mysterious Orchids of Ecuador” Orchid and Bromeliad Exhibition was held at the Hungarian Agricultural Museum, organized by the Hungarian Orchid Society in collaboration with the Embassy of Ecuador in Hungary. The event was attended by members of the diplomatic corps, local authorities, business representatives, and the general public.

Astonishing Ecuadorian orchids in Budapest

Ecuagenera, an Ecuadorian company specialized in the cultivation and preservation of orchids and hybrid species, showcased Ecuador’s rich natural treasures with its extensive variety of wild orchids. Based in the Gualaceo Valley, Ecuagenera plays a leading international role in the discovery, conservation, and propagation of orchids.

As part of the event, Ecuador’s Ambassador to Hungary, Cynthia Mayer Zavala, delivered a lecture titled “The Impact of Ecuador’s Flower Industry on the Economy and Tourism.”

The Ambassador highlighted that Ecuador exported flowers worth over $1 billion in 2023, making them the country’s fifth most important export product, reaching 120 destinations, including Hungary. The flower industry directly and indirectly generates approximately 120,000 jobs. Roses dominate flower exports, accounting for 73%, followed by gypsophila and other summer flowers.

Ambassador Mayer Zavala emphasized Ecuador’s extraordinary biodiversity, noting that more than 17,000 plant species have been classified in the country, including over 4,300 orchid species, of which 1,714 are endemic to Ecuador. One of the smallest known flowers, an orchid from the Stelis genus, was discovered in Saraguro, in southern Ecuador, measuring just 0.7 millimeters. The largest orchid, Phragmipedium wallisii, has petals and sepals that can reach lengths of one to two meters.

Ecuador is recognized as one of the world’s foremost orchid countries, thanks to its exceptional geographic location and unique climate. Orchids are an integral part of Ecuador’s natural heritage and a significant attraction for both domestic and international tourism.

The Ambassador also highlighted the “Orchid Route”, an extraordinary journey that offers visitors guided tours through various reserves and botanical gardens, where they can admire these exotic flowers in their natural habitat. Ecuador features six different routes for orchid enthusiasts, including the Galápagos Islands, where the most fascinating orchids can be observed, such as Quito’s Maywa Orchid, the Flower of Guayas, the Dracula Orchid, the world’s smallest orchid, and the Galápagos Orchid.

In addition, she highlighted Ecuador’s unique characteristics: it is the most biodiverse country in the world; the Galápagos Islands are a natural laboratory of the planet; it is the birthplace of cacao; and it lies on the Equator, preserving its rich cultural and natural heritage.

To conclude her speech, Ambassador Mayer Zavala presented the video “This Is Why Ecuador,” showcasing the country’s beauty and diversity.

Finally, the Ambassador invited travelers, naturalists, and nature enthusiasts to explore these wonders, where every region offers unique experiences. She encouraged them to personally discover the “Orchid Route”, which exemplifies Ecuador’s vast biodiversity through its astonishing orchid varieties and breathtaking landscapes.

Special thanks were extended to László Sipos, President of the Hungarian Orchid Society, for supporting the event.

Indonesia-Hungary tourism collaboration event boosts travel partnerships in Budapest

On 29 October, the ballroom of the prestigious Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Budapest transformed into a cultural and professional hub as Indonesia and Hungary united for an event to strengthen ties in the tourism industry. Titled “Gathering to Promote Collaboration in Tourism Field—Indonesia and Hungary,” this exclusive event brought together representatives from Hungarian and Indonesian tourism sectors, media professionals, and officials, creating a valuable platform for collaboration and cross-cultural exchange.

Setting the Stage for Tourism Collaboration

Organized to foster new partnerships and deepen existing connections, the event welcomed participants from various corners of the tourism industry, including Hungarian tourist agencies, international airline representatives, and officials. A delegation from Indonesia made up of representatives from three well-known hotels and three prominent travel agencies—mainly based in Bali—traveled specifically to promote Indonesian tourism to the Hungarian market. Their goal was clear: to expand their clientele from Hungary by showcasing Indonesia as a premier destination for Hungarian travelers seeking exotic and culturally rich experiences.

Key Highlights of the Event

The event opened with a warm welcome, setting a positive and collaborative tone. Ambassador of Indonesia to Hungary, H.E. Mr. A.H. Dimas Wahab honored the event with his presence, underscoring the significance of the tourism sector as a bridge between the two nations.

Mr. Ifan Mahdiyat Sofiana, Minister Counsellor and head of the Socio-Culture and Public Diplomacy division, highlighted Hungary’s growing potential as an emerging market for Indonesian tourism and expressed hope for fruitful partnerships that could help both countries benefit from enhanced tourism traffic and cultural exchanges.

In his speech, Rocky W Praputranto, Vice President of ASITA (Association of the Indonesian Travel and Tour Agencies), introduced the association, which has 7,000 members, and stressed that they are here because they have not yet reached the number of passengers in Hungary in 2019. They would like to further emphasize the beauty of Indonesia so that many people will visit one of the Indonesian islands again. As he said, their offer is complete, whether their guests are looking for a luxury or backpacking trip, or maybe they are approaching the travel agencies with wedding or honeymoon plans.

After this keynote speech, the event flowed smoothly through a series of speeches that discussed the future of tourism between Hungary and Indonesia. Speakers focused on the importance of cultural tourism, sustainable travel, and building new connections between travel providers and clients from both countries. Several of the speakers amazed the audience with short travel videos. Richard Haris, a representative of Hungarian tourist agencies (MUISZ) expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity to expand their offerings by including unique Indonesian experiences, emphasizing Bali’s appeal as a sought-after vacation spot. As he said, Indonesia is not only Bali, it’s more than that.

Traditional Indonesian Dance Performance

To highlight the richness of Indonesian culture, the event interspersed one traditional Indonesian dance performance. The dancers, adorned in vibrant, traditional attire, captivated the audience with their elegant movements. These performances added a cultural dimension to the gathering, showcasing the allure of Indonesia’s heritage and contributing to a deeper appreciation of its traditions among Hungarian attendees.

B2B Networking Session

A dedicated two-hour Business-to-Business (B2B) program followed the formal presentations, where Indonesian representatives had the chance to introduce their services to Hungarian partners. This networking session proved to be a vital component of the event, as it facilitated direct conversations between Indonesian hotel and travel agency representatives and Hungarian counterparts interested in forming business partnerships. The session offered a unique opportunity for Hungarian travel agencies to learn firsthand about the experiences Indonesian tourism providers could offer, ranging from luxurious stays in Bali’s renowned resorts to guided tours through Indonesia’s lesser-known islands.

Hungarian participants were especially drawn to Bali’s blend of natural beauty, wellness retreats, and cultural experiences, showing particular interest in establishing joint marketing initiatives that could appeal to Hungarian travelers seeking new, enriching travel destinations.

The event was capped off with a carefully curated lunch that celebrated the culinary traditions of both Indonesia and Hungary, and international also.

The event was also attended by Alpár Kató, the owner of Daily News Hungary, who negotiated a forward-looking deal that will see Daily News Hungary partner in the marketing campaign for Indonesia.

Looking Ahead: Strengthening Indonesia-Hungary Tourism Relations

The “Gathering to Promote Collaboration in Tourism Field—Indonesia and Hungary” event achieved its objective of creating a meaningful platform for industry professionals to come together, share insights, and envision a future of enhanced tourism collaboration between Indonesia and Hungary. Both sides expressed optimism about the potential for increased tourism traffic, particularly from Hungary to Indonesia, with discussions already underway on how to further market Indonesia’s unique offerings to Hungarian travelers.

As Indonesian representatives return with promising new contacts, the tourism sectors of both countries look forward to fostering stronger ties, enhancing the cultural and economic bonds that make travel such a rewarding experience. With events like these, Indonesia and Hungary set the stage for mutual growth, promoting tourism that celebrates diversity and shared human connections.
