Video, photos: huge explosion in the inner district of the capital, one dead
A gas explosion occurred in a house in Bérkocsis Street in the capital’s 8th district on Monday morning, Máté Kisdi, spokesman of the Budapest Emergency Management Directorate, told MTI. András Pikó, the mayor of the district (Momentum-DK-MSZP-Párbeszéd-LMP) wrote on his Facebook page about the incident that they are helping the residents of the house.
According to the spokesman for disaster management, the one-storey apartment building’s slab collapsed, the walls crumbled, windows and doors were torn out, but no fire was caused.
Five people left the damaged old apartment building. One person was rescued from the rubble by firefighters and handed over to rescuers, he added.
Electricity and gas company technicians are on the scene and have disconnected the block from the mains, the spokesman said.
András Pikó wrote that the municipality had already declared the house to be demolished, and most of the residents had moved out.
He added that the municipality should simultaneously demolish uninhabitable buildings and renovate those that had not been touched for decades.
“In this cycle, we are spending almost 4 billion forints just on this, from our own resources. Ten times or a hundred times more would not be enough and we have no one to rely on but ourselves. This is what today’s explosion is warning us all about,”
said András Pikó.

As we wrote a week ago, another explosion occurred in Hungary, rescue helicopter alerted, details HERE.
Explosion in Hungary, rescue helicopter alerted
A gas explosion occurred in a family house in Föveny Street, Szigetszentmiklós, Hungary. Firefighters and ambulances were deployed to the scene in large numbers. One person was injured.
The windows of the affected building were broken and furniture was burning in two rooms, the emergency services said on their website. The city’s professional firefighters extinguished the fire. An ambulance helicopter also arrived on the scene, Index reports.
The official site of the town of Szigetszentmiklós reported that one person was injured in the incident. The affected street was closed in both directions.
VIDEO, PHOTOS: Popular Budapest pool consumed in flames
Three hundred square metres of the roof structure of a popular Budapest pool was in flames this morning.
Firefighters from Budapest and the capital’s 14th district went to extinguish the fire that broke out in Erzsébetligeti Uszoda (Erzsébetliget Pool). The mobile lab of the disaster management authority continuously assesses air quality near the facility. Thankfully, their measures did not show any danger, napi.hu wrote.
The local government wrote on its Facebook page that it did not know the reason for the fire. Péter Kovács, the mayor of the 16th district, said they would open another pool for the public.
Here are some photos and a video:
PHOTOS: Firefighters save a deer in the garden of a Hungarian family house
Year after year, citizens in Hungary alert the fire department to animals in distress. In 2021, for example, firefighters helped animals in distress more than twenty times in Nógrád county only. In the whole country, they have helped deers, dogs, cats and even a baby stork that had fallen out of its nest. A largely positive outcome was achieved in the rescue operations of firefighters, which was no different from the first case this year.
Antlers in distress
This year, the first such case took place in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county, where the police and disaster management rescued a deer trapped in a water shaft in Ózd. The large animal fell into a narrow water shaft in the yard of a family house on 16 January 2023.
The police have suggested the use of a veterinary-approved hypodermic. After a veterinarian tranquilised the deer, units used a mechanised wheeled ladder to extract the antlered victim from the shaft. The animal was then extracted unharmed from the water shaft by the emergency services, safely transported to a nearby forest and released under supervision, wrote a local news portal Sajómente.hu.
Previous successful rescues of firefighters
Fortunately, authorities act quickly. It happened also in the other part of the country in 2020, where a cat was rescued from the engine compartment of a car. A driver approached them at the barracks, saying that a cat had crawled into the engine compartment and it was stucked. After about fifty minutes of work, they freed the trapped cat from the engine compartment, wrote Blikk.hu.
There are many cats among the animals in distress, but there are also dogs waiting to be rescued. In 2021, according to the National Directorate General for Disaster Management, the firefighters rescued a dog that had fallen through the ice in Székesfehérvár. The animal was being walked on the nature trail when it ran into the frozen Sóstó. The ice broke under the dog and its owner.
The fifteen-year-old girl managed to get out of the water, but the animal could not hold on to the ice. The firefighters from Székesfehérvár laid a plug ladder on the ice and approached it with rope safety. The dog and its owner were unharmed.
In 2021, a young stork fell out of its nest in the village of Szurdokpüspöki, Nógrád county. The animal could not fly yet, so it was unable to return to the nest by itself. Firefighters from Pásztó and Salgótarján rushed to the aid of the distressed bird. With the help of the ladder truck from Salgótarján, the teams successfully returned the animal to its nest, wrote the Facebook site of the National Directorate General for Disaster Management.
Tireless work by firefighters
As we wrote earlier, firefighters are also on the job all year round, and are particularly often called out during the festive season. Last year on the first day of Christmas, 185 emergency calls were received by the disaster management. On the same day, 133 fire brigades needed to intervene.
New Year in Hungary: first baby, buildings on fire, firework-related injuries
The first Hungarian baby of the year was born 35 seconds after the clock hit midnight. Firefighters were called out 137 times on New Year’s Eve, while ambulances responded to 3608 cases overnight.
The first baby
A baby boy born 35 seconds after midnight in Zalaegerszeg has become the first newborn in 2023 in public institutions in the country, MTI reported. The baby was born at the St. Rafael Hospital in Zala County, the obstetrics department of the hospital told MTI on Sunday. The boy, named Záven, was born by caesarean section at 48 centimetres and 2840 grams. He is the second child of his 34-year-old mother.
Zente is Budapest’s first baby
A little boy, Zente, has become the first newborn in 2023 in Budapest’s public institutions, napi.hu reports. According to the Péterfy Sándor Street Hospital and Clinic, Zente was born 8 minutes after midnight at 3440 grams and 55 centimetres, naturally. The boy is the first child of the family, born to a mother aged 21, the hospital said.
Firefighters were called 137 times on New Year’s Eve
On the last day of the year, 197 emergency calls were received by the disaster management, of which 137 cases required fire brigade intervention, the spokesperson of the National Disaster Management Directorate (Országos Katasztrófavédelmi Főigazgatóság) General told MTI on Sunday.
According to Dániel Mukics, the fire brigade was called 48 times for fires, 89 times for accidents requiring technical rescue, and 37 fires were caused by fireworks overnight. Firefighters were mostly alerted to burning thuja, rubbish bins and leftover fireworks. However, there were also cases where cars or buildings were set on fire by pyrotechnic products, he added.
A flat became uninhabitable
“Around 7:30 PM, a firework, presumably on a balcony, set fire to a flat on the third floor of a ten-storey apartment building in Miskolc and rendered it uninhabitable. Firefighters quickly extinguished the flames, while forty residents had to temporarily evacuate the building. The apartment affected by the fire was rendered uninhabitable, three residents were taken in by relatives and five people suffered smoke inhalation.”
3608 cases attended by ambulances on New Year’s Eve
Across the country, 3608 cases were attended by ambulances on New Year’s Eve, 704 of them in the capital, said a spokesman for the National Ambulance Service on Sunday with MTI. In his statement, Pál Győrfi said that in addition to traffic accidents, fights, fires, and internal medicine malaise, 188 people were hospitalised for excessive alcohol consumption, 35 of them minors. Ambulances were alerted to 19 cases of pyrotechnic device-related hand, face and eye injuries across the country.
35 percent price rise for fireworks, people may get a fine of 372 EUR
Christmas tree sellers are replaced by fireworks stalls. The combination of the USD/HUF exchange rate and inflation will mean that people have to pay 30-40 percent more for fireworks on New Year’s Eve 2022 than in 2021. Fireworks purchased from legal sellers may be used from 6 PM on 31 December until 6 AM on 1 January, the National Police Headquarters (ORFK) said.
This year, there are fewer places to buy New Year’s Eve fireworks, so businesses selling pyrotechnics are expecting a rise, RTL news reported.
According to the report, it will be possible to buy fireworks for New Year’s Eve from 28 December.
Anyone using an illegal item will be fined strictly by the authorities. Poeple should only buy from a reliable source from an officially licensed dealer. For example, Lidl is offering an extra discount on the 28th and 29th on these essential New Year’s Eve accessories.
On New Year’s Eve, firefighters are called to an average of fifty fires caused by fireworks. Most of these are small fires. However, every year, there are two or three larger fires that cause millions of forints worth of damage. The most common fires are fires involving pine trees, arbutus and rubbish bins, but it is not uncommon for a rocket to land on a balcony or fly through a room window and start a fire, the disaster management authorities said last year to penzcentrum.hu.
Specific rules for using fireworks
Firecrackers will be banned this year, as they have been every year since 2005, according to penzcentrum.hu. Possession will be considered to be illegal and anyone who celebrates with it will be fined 150,000 HUF (372 EUR).
Fireworks of pyrotechnic categories 1 and 2 are available all year round. Category 3 products can only be purchased between 28 and 31 December. Professional fireworks of category 4 can only be purchased during this period by a qualified pyrotechnician with a valid licence, says police.hu.
Class 1 pyrotechnic articles can be purchased and used from the age of 14. Class 2 from the age of 16, while Class 3 articles can only be purchased by adults.
Any product of pyrotechnic article class 3 that is not used, or any damaged or expired product, must be returned to the distributor within five days of New Year’s Eve. The distributor must take it back free of charge.
Hungarian firefighters worked 133 locations on the first day of Christmas
On the first day of Christmas, 185 emergency calls were received by the disaster management, 133 fire brigades were needed to intervene – the spokesman of the National Disaster Management Directorate General (OKF) told MTI on Monday.
According to Dániel Mukics, firefighters were called in 31 cases of fires and 102 times for accidents requiring technical rescue; on Sunday, there were a total of 21 house fires.
On Sunday morning in Tiszakürt, an outbuilding and a tractor, and a car in the attached carport were on fire, the flames spread to the roof structure of the main building.
In the afternoon, a passenger car burnt in Vila, and a fatal motorcycle accident in Zalaegerszeg gave firefighters a job to do. In Tarnabod, a family house caught fire and became uninhabitable, in Mátészalka, a kitchen burnt down due to food left on the stove, and in Szeged, a cat trapped in a gutter had to be rescued.
In Budaörs, a fatal train accident required the intervention of the emergency services, who helped 300 people on the train to transfer to the relief train.
In the evening, a fire broke out in an apartment of a three-storey apartment building in Győr, a weekend house in Miskolc was burnt down and became uninhabitable, and in Székesfehérvár, a garbage dumpster of an apartment building caught fire. The latter fire forced 78 people to temporarily leave the building.
The spokesman said that a carbon monoxide detector had also saved lives in a family house in Szárliget and in Göd.
Even at Christmas time, two thousand firefighters are on duty with five hundred vehicles, who will be on duty within 120 seconds of the alarm if there is a problem, the spokesman added in the statement.
Officers in police and fire stations will freeze in Hungary
A recent regulation limited the maximum temperature in state institutions. This also affects the police and fire stations, so the barracks cannot be heated to proper temperatures. Not only that but private heating appliances cannot be used either. The only option for officers and firefighters is to dress as warmly as possible.
According to the National Catastrophe Prevention Directorate (Országos Katasztrófavédelmi Főigazgatóság), as the state finances all stations, all regulations apply to them as well, reports RTL.hu. The regulation limits the maximum temperature inside all state-financed institutions and facilities to eighteen degrees. Zsaruellátó.hu posted a letter on their Facebook page, which says that until 15 October, the heating cannot be turned on and no heating appliances can be used. However, the Hungarian National Bank is exempted from this regulation.
The exemptions include social boarding houses, health- and childcare facilities, also in indoor public swimming pools. In elementary schools, the temperature can even reach twenty degrees.
Punishment for service
In the letter, it is also stated that heating can only be turned on if the regional police station permits it. Independent action is strictly prohibited in this case, reports Index.hu. The advice for police officers was that the protection against cold should be assured by proper clothing and regular exercise. Another post details the negative effects of this regulation and the potential health risks.
It is also a problem that electricity usage will be limited, therefore officers cannot charge their phones or equipment. Officers are angered by these actions, stating that it limits their abilities to efficiently do their jobs. Others just made fun of the surreal situation with memes and poems as it is just too ridiculous to bear. The government again let down those who have an important duty to society. They are also the ones who did not complain about anything, yet they are the ones who got punished.
In previous reports, medical professionals explained that heat perception can vary by the individual and the work environment. Universally maximising temperatures is just not the most efficient way to limit gas and electricity usage. In the long run, it could have consequences for the well-being of workers.
Fire broke out in a hotel near Lake Balaton – 400 people had to be evacuated
A switch cabinet caught fire on Friday afternoon in a Hévíz hotel, close to Hungary’s famous Lake Balaton. Almost 400 people had to leave the building temporarily.
According to index.hu, the local disaster management agency’s spokesman told them that the fire started in the wellness section of the building. The switch cabinet was burning low, but there was a lot of smoke. Thankfully, firefighters could extinguish the flames quickly.
Nevertheless, 400 people had to leave the building of the hotel complex, including 332 guests and 60 staff members. Zsolt Kósi said nobody got injured, and the hall covered in smoke was cleared with special smoke extractors.

Wildfire threatening a Hungarian city
A wildfire raging in a large forest is threatening several farmsteads near Kiskunhalas, in southern Hungary, the disaster management authority said on Thursday.
Twenty-two fire brigades have been deployed to contain the flames. Their concerted efforts are being hampered by wind and the difficult terrain, it said.
Fire broke out near Budapest Airport – VIDEO
A Hungarian news outlet wrote that the forests and meadows around the airport transformed into a smouldering hell because of the fire that broke out on Monday. Check out the details and a video about what happened below.
According to Blikk, the National Directorate General for Disaster Management shared a statement in which they cleared the circumstances of the fire. They wrote that it broke out on Monday afternoon in the 18th district of Budapest, on a territory located between the Gyömrői, Csévéző and Billentyű streets.
Apart from the professional staff, volunteer firefighters from Fót and Budapest’s Rózsadomb arrived. They attacked the fire from multiple sides and managed to stop the flames. 27 vehicles took part in the operation with 92 firefighters.
The fume was so great that it covered the nearby expressway between Budapest’s downtown and the Liszt Ferenc International Airport. As a result, drivers could barely see. Firefighters used drones to record the damaged territory. They said that 20 hectares of dry undergrowth were affected by the fire. The photo you can check out above is a print screen from that.
Because of the extreme heat, it is forbidden to make a fire in Hungary. That is not exceptional. Authorities regularly introduced such bans in previous years.
An extreme heatwave hit Hungary on Tuesday. Therefore, authorities issued a third-degree heat alert until Saturday. That means the daily median temperature will reach 27 °C in the following days. The disaster management and health authorities ask everybody to drink enough water and protect their skin from solar radiation. The Hungarian meteorological service said that in the second half of the week, the daily maximum would reach 40 degrees. The temperature will not go below 20 Celsius degrees even at daybreak.

VIDEOS: drunk couple had sex, that’s why 16 flats in Budapest caught fire
On Sunday afternoon, 18 people were forced to flee their homes after flames broke out in the roof of a block of flats in Ferencváros.
Firefighters were called out in force to Füleki Street in the IX district, where a fire broke out in a terraced house in a multi-family apartment building.
The fire affected 18 apartments, 17 people were evacuated and two dogs and a cat were rescued,” said a deputy spokesman for the fire brigade on Sunday afternoon. No personal injuries were reported.
According to Tények, a woman left food on the stove during sex, which is why 16 apartments burned down in Budapest on Sunday afternoon. According to the residents, the woman was drunk and forgot to eat, and the fire spread quickly from the kitchen. The couple was rescued by passers-by through the window and taken away by ambulances.
Fifteen water jets were used to extinguish the flames, under the direction of the disaster management operational service.
Shocking! Elderly sets himself on fire in Hungarian district office – VIDEOS
On Monday, 31 January, a 74-year-old man from the area of Veszprém set himself on fire in the government office of Veszprém county.
According to Veol, a local news site, a large number of ambulance and disaster management vehicles rushed to the scene, where the elderly committed suicide.
Veszprémkukac wrote that the office building was in the same street as the local fire department, so the first responders arrived at the scene quickly.
On the website of the Hungarian police, the authorities have reported that the 74-year-old man brought with him a liquid substance and used it as a fire accelerant.
According to eyewitnesses, the man poured the liquid on himself and set himself on fire. “It was horrible to see him burning,” – they said to Veol.
24 inquired about the case from the Hungarian National Directorate General for Disaster Management and the county spokeswoman Henrietta Csondor replied that several pieces of furniture caught fire on the first floor and the smoke spread to the second floor as well.
Fortunately, the fire was extinguished by the local firefighters and disaster management personnel.
Alexandra Máté, the spokeswoman of the Veszprém county police headquarters told Veol, that 37 people had to evacuate the building.
Authorities report that the only victim was the 74-year-old man, who committed suicide. He was burned so badly that he passed away at the scene.
Fortunately, no other person was hurt, at least not physically, but the cost of the material damages is estimated to be high.
It is believed that the man had some grudge or possibly some sort of hardship that led him to choose such a horrible fate.
24 reports that the Police have started an investigation of the case under suspicion of causing danger to the public.
The authorities have provided a video after the fire was extinguished. From the images it is clear that the 74-year-old man used some sort of fire accelerant and that the fire was blazing angrily even though the firefighter arrived at the scene early.
If you have depression or thoughts of harming yourself or others, please seek professional help or call the suicide hotline of your country. In Hungary, 116-123 is a 24/7 free-to-call hotline that provides mental help. Everyone matters!
Hurricane-like winds break record in Hungary – PHOTOS
The stormy weather over the weekend caused extreme damages, significant transportation delays and many service disruptions across the country. The photos of the damage speak for themselves.
The hurricane-force winds over the weekend left extreme damage in Hungary. At Lake Balaton, the strongest wind (119.5 km/h) was measured in Siófok that crushed the ice on the Hungarian sea.
Moreover, the windy weather left behind broken branches and fallen trees all across the country.
Many trees fell on roads, houses, fences, cars and power lines, and the wind also damaged the roofs of buildings.
As the Hungarian news portal Helló Magyar reports, most of the emergency calls came from Budapest and Pest county, but many alarms were also received from Bács-Kiskun and Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok counties.
The damages caused significant delays in public transport.
Train cancellations on several routes, 1-2 hour delays and replacement bus services were experienced by passengers travelling by train on Sunday evening. Train speed was limited on several lines in order to prevent power line breaks and power cuts.
The hurricane-force winds caused power cuts in several places across the country, leaving thousands of users without access to mobile and fixed telephone, internet and cable TV services. The damages affected most parts of Kecskemét, Albertirsa, Tatabánya and Oroszlány.
According to the National Directorate General for Disaster Management (OKF), firefighters were called out to 1,654 incidents on Sunday due to windy weather. A significant number of the alarms were due to
building and chimney damages, hanging tiles, tin sheets, advertising signs, and in some places traffic lights blown down by the wind.
In addition, eight family houses have become temporarily uninhabitable due to damage caused by strong winds on Sunday. The 34 people concerned were taken in by their relatives.
Although winds eased in many places on Monday, it is advised to remain cautious. Strong wind can still be expected in the areas of Fertőszentmiklós, Csorna, Győr, Bakony, the northern and eastern parts of Pest county, the eastern part of Fejér county, near Szántód and Paks, Mátra, and the regions of Balassagyarmat, Heves, Szolnok and Gyomaendrőd.
Broken branches or fallen trees can be expected on mountain roads and side roads in the upcoming days. The OKF recommends assessing the damage around residential properties and reporting damaged power lines, utilities and dangerously fallen trees to emergency number 112.

In total 7 ambulance units rushed to the hospital and two men and one woman had to be taken to a different hospital’s toxicology department due to the suspicion of smoke inhalation.
Máté Kisdi added that the fire had impacted a roughly 5 m2 area, while the smoke affected an approximately 100 m2 area.
Tragedy! Hungarian artist found dead in his home
Just when people were hoping that 2022 would be different from the past two tragic years, a series of horrible accidents and deaths shook the country. Now, we have to painfully report the death of a Hungarian artist, musician and actor.
After we have reported about the tragic events of New Year’s Eve, the several train collisions during which three people died, another sorrowful accident happened.
In the early morning of 1st January, 2022, the news about a group of teenagers tragically crashing to an incoming train hit the country hard.
Another tragedy
However, the array of tragic events did not end there. Residents reported to the authorities that a fire had broken out in a house in Solymár, Várkapu wrote. Later, the Directorate for Disaster Management confirmed that they had found a dead body inside the house and that the cause of death is possibly smoke inhalation.
The tragic accident was discovered when the owner of the 80 square metre house did not respond to calls, and thus one of his family members decided to pass by his house, Telex writes.
The family member had to break into the house where he found the body of Bernát Babicsek (Bernie) and signs of fire. Experts of the Hungarian Disaster Management are currently investigating the cause of the fire.
Bernát Babicsek was a beloved Hungarian actor known for several major TV roles, most notably including television series such as Barátok közt (Among Friends), Jóban Rosszban (In good and bad), and Szeress most! (Love me now!).
Moreover, he was also a musician and played the accordion in Paddy and the Rats, a Celtic punk band from Miskolc. The band has been gaining momentum outside of Hungary and had toured in several locations so far.
Both the fans and his bandmates as well as his actor colleagues are baffled by the tragedy of the only 41-year-old artist’s death.
A couple of days ago, they were celebrating their success after a theatre play with Lia Pokorny, another famous Hungarian artist.
The band said goodbye to their brother and friend on their Facebook page and asked the fans to pray for Bernát’s family to get through this tragic period.
Hungarian worker died in Germany
Sadly, we have to report another devastating news. Although the event occurred on the 23rd of December, just a few weeks back, we have just been informed through an article on 444, that
a 28-year-old Hungarian lost his life in a fire in Thuringia, Germany.
In Südthüringen, the local news site reported that 12 people have been rendered homeless due to a building fire. Local authorities suspect that the cause of the fire must have been arson.
Mad man used a fire extinguisher on guests at a hotel on NYE in Hungary
An enraged man set off the fire alarm and used a fire extinguisher on guests at Saliris Hotel in Egerszalók.
The 44-year-old guest from Érd spent New Year’s Eve at the hotel with his girlfriend. The police are conducting an investigation.
Police have arrested the crazy man
It was a full house in the hotel, with about five hundred guests. According to our information, many of the guests started panicking, little children cried and trembled in fear, several adults went into the open air in front of the hotel in their pyjamas or wrapped in blankets.
Bálint Soltész, a spokesman for the Heves County Police Headquarters, confirmed the incident and said that proceedings had been initiated against one of the hotel’s guests. The 44-year-old man from Érd is being investigated for the crime of rioting and vandalism, severely disrupting public order.

A spokesman said the police were alerted around two in the morning about how the mad man was shouting in one of the hotel’s corridors “there is fire, there is fire”.
According to Telex, the hotel’s mad guest then turned on the hotel’s fire alarm system, picked up an extinguisher, and began spraying its contents down the hallway. The man also sprayed it on the guests, and after he could not go back to his room, he kicked in the door.
The mad man was taken to the Eger headquarters by the police who arrived at the scene, where he was interrogated.
The suspect, who confesses to having spent his New Year’s Eve with his girlfriend at the hotel, denied everything, Bálint Soltész told RTL.hu.

The Hotel staff tried their best
Hunguest Hotels confirmed to RTL.hu that the fire brigade and ambulances went to Saliris Hotel due to a false alarm. According to them, after the fire alarm sounded, 10-20 of their colleagues dealt with the management of the guests.
The guests were understandably frightened when the alarm sounded, but they were kept informed of what was happening. The guests had to spend about 15 minutes in front of the building, they were very cooperative, the Hotel added.
They pointed out that Saliris Hotel was not to blame for the incident, but their staff did their best to solve the unexpected problem. The New Year’s Eve party in the hotel lobby had to be interrupted for about 60 minutes, but then the music resumed.
