How Szoboszlai became Liverpool’s most important midfielder

Dominik Szoboszlai English star club

In any football setup, the midfield position comes with so much responsibility that a slip-up in this section results in both offensive and defensive losses. This effect is so much so that bookies often base their odds on the strength of the midfield. For example, in Hungary, punters review midfield sessions to determine the wagers they should make on the sites listed on sportfogadooldalak.net. They are not wrong. Midfielders control the game, which makes them some of the most important players in any game – we look at Dominik Szoboszlai in this regard as we uncover how he came to be the top dog in this sphere.

What Makes Szoboszlai So Important to Liverpool?

Standing at 1.87 meters, Dominik Szoboszlai, a Hungarian player, ranks as one of the best central midfielders that the world has ever seen. At only 24, he has already made a mark in the football world, having started out at RB Leipzig, where he shone so much in his prowess that Liverpool could not help but scoop him up when the chance presented itself.

But what makes him so special?

Versatility.

While many players only excel in one position, Szoboszlai can work across the entire midfield. So, it makes it easy for the team to fill in existing gaps so that other players can focus on what they do best.

What do the stats show?

  • In his 17 matches in the Premier League, he has scored 2 goals and made 2 assists.
  • In his 6 matches with the UEFA Champions League, he has scored one goal and made one assist.

These are just stats from the 2025-2025 season, but it’s clear that he’s in it to win it. After all, in his career lifetime, he has played in 328 matches, scoring 80 goals and making 64 assists.

Consistency.

Some players are unable to keep up with the high pressures that come with playing at the top of the league. But that’s not the case for Szoboszlai. Whether the team is facing defeat or having a successful streak, he keeps up his pace.

So consistent is he that he has made the following contributions in his career:

  • He won the goal of the month during Liverpool’s game against Leicester City.
  • He was instrumental in Liverpool winning the Carabao Cup.
  • He was Standard Chartered Player of the Month in August 2023.

His ability to keep up his performance over the seasons is quite inspiring as the team knows that it can count on him even when the stakes are high.

Leadership.

Some players are great at following instructions, others are good at giving them, while others can do both. Szoboszlai is in the latter category. When he’s not following the tactical gameplay at Liverpool, he’s captaining the Hungary National team. This ability to lead also informs his personality as a player, as he can respect leadership and knows how to perform under pressure. And as any midfielder will tell you, playing in the midfield is like being in the hot seat.

This combination of skills makes him one of the most valuable players in Liverpool, which explains why he gets to play in many games.

Just How Valuable is Szoboszlai?

In the football industry, a player’s value often comes down to the numbers. So, what are they in this case?

  1. The transfer deal. Szoboszlai previously played for RB Leipzig. But when Liverpool’s management saw just how talented he was, they swooped in with a €70 million, which is the fourth-most expensive signing that the team has ever had.
  2. The contract specifics. Szoboszlai joined Liverpool on 2nd July 2023 and will be with the team up to 30th June, 2028. In these five years, he is subject to a weekly salary of £150,000 as well as bonuses, where applicable.

In his time with Liverpool, his performance has remained consistent, resulting in the team’s overall positive trend. As such, his market value has gone up, and now sits at €75 million. As he continues to prove just how talented he is, predictions are rife that he could soon be one of the most expensive signings in the next transfer window.

Robbie Keane takes the helm as Ferencváros’ new head coach

robbie keane ferencváros

The former Irish footballer Robbie Keane was a very successful player, but he has also won championships as a coach.

Pascal Janssen, who managed the men’s football team of 35-time champion Ferencváros from the summer of 2024, has been bought out by the group that owns one of the world’s leading football clubs. FTC asked for and received a substantial sum for the outgoing coach.

Ferencváros have announced that they have found a successor to Dutchman Pascal Jansen at the helm of their 35-time champions and 24-time cup winners, with the signing of 146-time Irish international Robbie Keane on Monday. The new head coach arrived in Budapest on Sunday evening and will leave on Tuesday to join our team at the training camp in Spain.

Robbie Keane’s player career

The former top-flight striker Keane has played for Internazionale in Italy and in the English Premier League for Coventry City, Leeds United, Tottenham, Liverpool, West Ham United and Aston Villa, as well as Scotland’s Celtic, Los Angeles Galaxy in the US and Atlético Kolkata in India. The 44-year-old has scored more than 320 goals in 730 club matches, won the English Football League Cup with Tottenham and is a three-time MLS champion with LA Galaxy. He has scored 68 goals for the national team, making him the all-time goalscoring record holder for the national team, and played for the Republic of Ireland at the 2002 World Cup and the 2012 and 2016 European Championships. The former footballer has made 146 appearances for the Republic of Ireland national team.

Manager career

Keane made his coaching debut as player-manager of ATK India in March 2018 and joined the Republic of Ireland national team in November as assistant coach to national captain Mick McCarthy. Since June 2019, he has worked alongside former team-mate Jonathan Woodgate as assistant coach of Middlesbrough’s EFL Championship side. After leaving Middlesbrough following the outbreak of the pandemic, he completed his UEFA coaching qualification and was awarded the UEFA Pro Licence in 2020.

In the spring of 2023, he joined Sam Allardyce’s staff at Leeds United, but failed to keep the club in the Premier League and left to take up his first head coaching post as manager of Maccabi Tel Aviv in Israel. In the 2023-2024 season, he won the league and the Toto Cup (the local League Cup) with Maccabi. His team played in the UEFA European Conference League, where they won their group and reached the last 16, where they were stopped by Greece’s Olympiakos – who they also beat. Maccabi won 4-1 in Piraeus, but in the return leg at a neutral venue – Bačka Topola – the Greeks won by the same margin, scoring two more goals in extra time to progress and later claim the trophy.

Keane left Maccabi after one season and has been without a club since the summer.

Here’s Hungary’s road to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA: can we do it?

A century of tradition at stake: Haladás 105-year legacy in peril as club appeals to PM Orbán

haladás football club

For 105 years, Haladás VSE, the most important sports club in Szombathely and Vas county, was one of the most important factors in Hungarian sports life. Now it seems that there is time to save the club at the end of the year, and if the desired HUF 55 million (EUR 134,000) for the tax debt is not collected, the history of the sports club loved by many could end forever.

The Haladás Railway Sports Association (Haladás Vasutas Sport Egyesület) was founded in 1919, and since then, there have been better and worse times, but the situation has never been so hopeless.

The previous owner’s half-hearted economic activities brought the club, which has 14 sections, to the brink of bankruptcy, and it now has a debt of HUF 55 million to pay to the National Tax and Customs Office by 31 December. The municipality of Szombathely does not want to help, so now the leaders of the sections have appealed to the Prime Minister of Hungary and the fans have started a desperate fundraising campaign:

Open letter to the Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orbán

We are publishing the open letter of the leaders and supporters of Haladás VSE in unchanged form:

Subject: Be the saviour of Haladás VSE – Request for help from the Prime Minister of Hungary

“Respect the past to understand the present and work for the future.” – István Széchenyi

Dear Prime Minister!

This letter is nothing more than a last call for help. It is a plea that a legacy that has shaped the lives of generations and has become a symbol of Hungary should not be lost forever.

These lines are addressed to you not only on behalf of a small community, but on behalf of an entire region. A region that is about to lose an asset that has been part of its life, its daily life and its identity for more than a century. After 105 years, the Haladás VSE, one of the greatest prides of Vas county, is on the verge of disappearing. At the delegates’ meeting on 18 December, the delegates voted unanimously that the association’s departments should continue to operate together under the name of Haladás. This shows that we are all committed to preserving the club’s heritage and its role as a community.

Haladás is not just a sports club. It is a symbol that has brought Szombathelyites together, that has given hope, that has bridged the gap between our past and our future. Haladás is the common denominator of the past, the present and the future in Vas county. In its fourteen divisions, nearly 1,000 athletes play their favourite sport – not just competitively, but with joy and community-building. Among them are footballers, wrestlers, weightlifters, archers, judo players, athletes and many other sportsmen and women who have made Hungary famous not only locally, but also nationally and internationally. We have many children of pre-school age who have had their first sporting experience in the crest of the Haladás. The loss of the club would not only endanger competitive sport, but also the sporting opportunities of families, children and young people in Szombathely. Our Olympians, world-class athletes – such as Géza Tóth, Erzsébet Márkus, Dániel Ligeti or the footballer Zoltán Szarka – all started their careers within the walls of Haladás. Their names represented not only Szombathely, but the whole nation on the world sports map. But just as important are the coaches, youth trainers and volunteers who have worked tirelessly to educate future generations. For Szombathely and Vas county, the Haladás is more than a sport: it is an identity. It is a community foundation that has educated generations to honour, perseverance and solidarity.

Dear Prime Minister,

In today’s world, where we lose values every day, let us save at least one. A value that has been here for 105 years and gives us hope. A symbol that says: something can exist that will stand the test of time, that will overcome world wars and economic crises.

Please help us save this asset! Under your leadership, the country has set an example by standing up for the preservation of Hungarian values and memories. Now we ask you to do your utmost to ensure that Haladás VSE can survive and continue to nurture its Hungarian champions. With your support, you can give us another chance to keep our coat of arms shining brightly in the skies of Western Transdanubia.

Please help us to keep the green and white colours a beacon of hope in Vas county. This association can be not only our past, but also our future. A future where children, families and athletes can continue to wear the green and white with pride.

Please help us consolidate the association, providing the stable foundation needed to operate. Unfortunately, the difficulties we are facing in maintaining the association have so far not been met with any meaningful support from the city administration; we have only been offered the possibility of joining another organisation. The new Board elected at the Delegates’ Meeting on 18 December is committed to re-launching our beloved club and to consolidating the foundations on which we can build the future of the Progress VSE. However, the support and cooperation of the Prime Minister is now essential.

Let us not let one of Hungary’s oldest jewels be lost.

With respect and hope,

The leaders and supporters of Haladás VSE

FIFA Puskás Award: Garnacho scored the most beautiful goal in 2024 – VIDEO

Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho of Argentina has won the Puskás Ferenc Award for the most beautiful goal of the year, presented at Tuesday’s International Football Federation (FIFA) Doha Gala.

Alejandro Garnacho scored his scissor-kick goal against Everton in the 2023-2024 Premier League season – a 1-0 win for MU, which, it turned out, not only earned him three points but also the Puskás Award. The 20-year-old is the second Argentine footballer (after Erik Lamela) and the second Manchester United player (Cristiano Ronaldo was the first winner in 2009) to receive this award.

Here’s Hungary’s road to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA: can we do it?

Here’s Hungary’s road to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA: can we do it?

It was at FIFA’s Zürich headquarters on Friday that Hungary Men were drawn from the second pot of seeds to contest European Qualifying Group F, one which will feature two familiar opponents and one less so. Here’s Hungary’s road to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA. Will we be able to qualify? And will President Trump attend our matches with Orbán?

Hungary’s road to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico will start in a four-team European Qualifying group including the winners of the Portugal vs Denmark Nations League play-off tie, as well as familiar recent opponent Republic of Ireland and intriguingly, Armenia, whom Hungary have faced just once in the past, a 2004 friendly in Greece, mlsz.hu wrote.

That fixture came during German World Cup winner Lothar Matthäus‘s reign as Hungary head coach, his largely experimental side winning 2-0 during a winter training camp. Republic of ireland are a much more well-known opponent, Marco Rossi’s squad having faced them twice in friendlies in recent years, a warm-up match held in Újpest prior to the delayed Euro 2020 tournament in June 2021 which ended goalless (as did a previous friendly fixture prior to Euro 2012) being followed by another friendly earlier this year when the Irish triumphed 2-1.

The group’s top seeds, the winner of March 2025’s Nations League play-off between Portugal and Denmark, are also very recognisable to Hungarian fans, and not just because they possess world stars such as Cristiano Ronaldo for the former and Christian Eriksen for the latter. Both nations were drawn in the same 2010 World Cup qualifying group as Hungary, two losses against Portugal proving costly as Hungary failed to reached the tournament finals despite a home draw and away victory against Denmark.

Hungary and Portugal have also met in recent EUROs, a pulsating 3-3 draw in 2016 resulting in Hungary’s confirmation as group-stage winners in France, while Portugal gained a measure of revenge by overcoming Hungary 3-0 in Budapest in the 2021 group phase.

Fixture venues, dates and times for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign will be confirmed in due course.

Here are the matches:

  • 6 September (Saturday), 8:45 PM: Ireland-Hungary
  • 9 September (Tuesday), 8:45 PM: Hungary-Portugal/Denmark
  • 11 October (Saturday), 6 PM: Hungary-Armenia
  • 14 October (Tuesday), 8:45 PM: Portugal/Denmark-Hungary
  • 13 November (Thursday), 6 PM: Armenia-Hungary
  • 16 November (Sunday), 3 PM: Hungary-Ireland

Marco Rossi: There is no easy opponent

Hungary Men’s World Cup qualifying opponent from the first pot of seeds, either Portugal or Denmark, will definitely be a tough proposition, according to head coach Marco Rossi, but he’s emphasised there are no easy opponents in international football nowadays anyway.

As well as the winner of the Nations League play-off tie between Portugal or Denmark, European Qualifying Group F will pit Hungary against Republic of Ireland and Armenia during 2025 as Europe’s national teams strive to reach the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico.

“I counted on us getting an extremely strong team from the first pot of seeds, which may well turn out to be Portugal. We know them and are aware of their strength, so while we won’t be the favourites to win, we’ll try to do our best,” Rossi explained. “As for the others, we’ve recently experienced the difficulties of playing against Republic of Ireland. We’re talking about a physically tough team, but as we also know, it’s not easy against anyone away from home, even if the Irish and Armenian national teams may not quite represent the same level as that of the very top nations. Every match will be in the balance – f course it’s important that we’re ahead in the world rankings, but we have to produce our best possible performance in order to prove it on the pitch and overcome these opponents.”

Of the two possible opponents from the first pot of seeds, Rossi has already managed Hungary in a match against Portugal, a 3-0 loss in the group stage of the European Championship in the Puskás Arena in 2021.

“The Portuguese national team has changed a lot since our last match against each other. Several players have been replaced, but we’re still talking about a top team with excellent footballers in every position. In addition, they have Cristiano Ronaldo who is very difficult to stop and is effective not only in Saudi Arabia, but also against the biggest nations for his national team,” Rossi continued, after which he answered the question of which of these two possible opponents he’d choose as an opponent in terms of playing style. “We’re talking about two teams with different styles. The Danes play classic Scandinavian football; they’re physically strong, well organised and also tactically and technically well prepared. They have several excellent players, but I think Portugal are stronger. Therefore, if I had to choose, I would choose Denmark, because Portugal is an even better team than them. Of course, this doesn’t mean we’d have an easy time against Denmark, but knowing their style, we’d have more of a chance against them. However, Portugal’s loss against Georgia meant we were eliminated at this year’s European Championship, so if we’d get them, I’d be happy that we’ll have the opportunity to gain a measure of revenge.”

Willi Orbán vows to help RB Leipzig achieve ‘full potential’ after below-par start to the season

RB Leipzig have, slowly but surely, become one of the most consistent teams in the German Bundesliga and the Champions League.

But the Red Bull franchise hasn’t quite been at the races in 2024/25 so far… leaving their Hungarian ace and club captain, Willi Orbán, at a loss to explain their low-key start to the campaign.

However, the 32-year-old has vowed to do all he can to help the club unlock its ‘full potential’, and his performances so far this term confirm he’s leading from the front heading into a crucial chapter of the season.

Crisis on the Continental Front

One of the main casualties of RB Leipzig’s sluggish start has been their results in the revamped Champions League.

They lost all of their opening five games in the competition, leaving them trailing in the Champions League betting market to the likes of Liverpool (+450), Manchester City (+550), and Arsenal (+550).

Indeed, Champions League winner odds of +25000 suggest that Leipzig’s hopes of advancing in the continental showpiece are all but over.

And so attention will turn to domestic matters, where Die Rotten Bullen have their eyes fixed on another top-four finish… or better.

After 13 rounds of action, Leipzig find themselves in fourth place, albeit nine points behind the leaders Bayern Munich. However, a win – and other results going their way – could see Orbán and co leap as high as second in the table, which is more in-line with their ambitions.

However, the Expected Points table – which subtracts Expected Goals (xG) yielded from xG created – shows Leipzig’s ‘true’ position, based upon their performances, as a lowly ninth in the Bundesliga.

At least in Orbán they have a captain leading from the front…

Captain Fantastic

Increasingly these days in modern football, central defenders are athletic ball-players with an eye for a pass.

But that genre of player can sometimes struggle with the physicality of defending, which is why centre backs like the Hungarian are still worth their weight in gold.

Orbán prides himself on doing the ‘dirty work’ of defending, from making last-ditch tackles and blocks, to putting his head in where it hurts. No wonder his Leipzig teammates consider him to be such an inspirational leader.

After 13 rounds of Bundesliga games, Orbán ranks third amongst the division’s players for aerial duels won, third for successful blocks, and fifth for clearances made. He is, statistically speaking, the best defender in German football right now.

The powerhouse is also a handful in the opposition’s penalty area at set pieces, scoring four times in the Bundesliga so far this term.

But the Leipzig captain appreciates that there’s more work to be done, and while he was feeling bullish after his side’s 2-0 victory over Holstein Kiel early in December, Orbán confirmed that he and his teammates still had higher levels to strive for.

“We didn’t manage to play to our full potential in November, both as a team and as individual players,” he said.

But the belief is still there… and why wouldn’t it be, with Orbán leading from the front.

Dominik Szoboszlai and Liverpool: a promising season ahead

As Liverpool embarks on the 2024 season, the spotlight is firmly on Dominik Szoboszlai, the Hungarian midfielder who joined the club in a high-profile transfer from RB Leipzig for approximately £60 million. Szoboszlai’s integration into Liverpool’s dynamic midfield has reinforced the team’s competitive edge and sparked optimism among fans and analysts alike regarding a successful season.

Szoboszlai’s Role and Contributions

Szoboszlai, who has consistently demonstrated his potential as a playmaker, has been pivotal in Liverpool’s early successes this season. Despite facing some criticism for his goal-scoring output—having netted only once in the Champions League against AC Milan—he emphasizes his commitment to the team’s overall performance rather than individual statistics. He remarked, “If we are top of the league and I don’t score goals, that’s the most important for me”. This mentality reflects a mature understanding of his role within the squad, focusing on contributing defensively and creatively.

His ability to create scoring opportunities is noteworthy; last season at Leipzig, he led in several key metrics, including involvement in shot-ending sequences and creating secondary chances. This season under manager Arne Slot, Szoboszlai’s shooting approach has evolved. He is now taking fewer long-range shots but focusing on higher-quality chances closer to goal, which aligns with Liverpool’s tactical shift towards more sustainable scoring methods.

Tactical Evolution Under Arne Slot

Liverpool’s tactical framework has undergone significant changes since Slot’s appointment. The team is now more patient in possession, waiting for optimal moments to attack rather than relying on quick strikes from distance. This strategic evolution has allowed Szoboszlai to thrive as a second striker, utilizing his physicality and intelligence to find space and support offensive plays. His development in this role is expected to yield more goals as he adapts to the demands of playing closer to the opposition’s goal.

Team Performance and Prospects

Liverpool currently sits at the top of the Premier League table, showcasing a strong start to the season with six points from their initial Champions League matches and a recent victory over Chelsea. The team’s resilience and fighting spirit have been evident, particularly in high-stakes matches against top-tier opponents. Slot noted that while results have been positive, there remains room for improvement in their overall gameplay.

The integration of Szoboszlai into this competitive environment has not only enhanced Liverpool’s midfield depth but also provided a fresh attacking dimension. His work ethic off the ball complements Liverpool’s pressing style, making him an invaluable asset as they aim for silverware this season.

Conclusion

As Liverpool progresses through the season, Dominik Szoboszlai stands out as a key figure whose contributions extend beyond mere statistics. His adaptability and commitment to team success align perfectly with Liverpool’s ambitions. With continued development and tactical refinement under Slot, Szoboszlai is poised to make significant impacts both in terms of goals and assists as the season unfolds. The combination of his talent and Liverpool’s current form suggests that this could indeed be a memorable season for both player and club.

PM Orbán’s friend, the wealthiest Hungarian, Lőrinc Mészáros, may buy top Austrian football club

Lőrinc Mészáros, the wealthiest Hungarian

Lőrinc Mészáros is the wealthiest Hungarian who gained his wealth from public procurements won under the prime ministership of Viktor Orbán. Orbán and Mészáros are friends, and both live in Felcsút, a small village near Székesfehérvár. It seems Mészáros wants to buy Austria Wien, one of the top soccer clubs of our western neighbour, which is in second place in the Bundesliga, only 3 points behind Sturm Graz.

Lőrinc Mészáros may buy a top Austrian football association

According to 444, the Hungarian entrepreneur from Felcsút is negotiating with Austria Wien about becoming a shareholder in one of Austria’s top soccer teams. Kurier, a local newspaper, wrote about the talks. Austria Wien needs an investor urgently because they have to buy back some shares from a minority owner by next Saturday. If not, share prices will increase by 20%, an unbearable burden since the club struggles with severe financial problems.

According to the newspaper, the football association’s primary target was to sell its stadium, Estadio Franz Horr, known as Generali Arena, for EUR 45-50 million. However, Lőrinc Mészáros is interested in the club, not the stadium. Reportedly, he expressed that interest months ago. 444 contacted the Mészáros Group with their questions but has not received an answer yet.

With a successful deal, Mészáros could become the minority owner of a renowned Austrian soccer association. So far, Austria Wien has won the Bundesliga 23 times, the Austrian Cup 27 times, and the Austrian Supercup 6 times. They are currently in second place of the Austrian Bundesliga, only three points behind Sturm Graz.

Mészáros owns Felcsút and NK Osijek

This is not the first time that the richest Hungarian has got into the news regarding the purchase of an Austrian club. Four years ago, Mészáros’s name came up in connection with Mattersburg as a potential buyer.

Mészáros is the owner of the Puskás Academy in Felcsút, the prime minister’s village. Felcsút is now a member of the top Hungarian football league.

He also has an interest in Croatia’s football league by owning NK Osijek. The team struggled with financial problems before the acquisition, but under Mészáros’s ownership, it began to flourish. The Hungarian businessman built a new stadium and an academy for a lot of money. However, based on their financial reports, the club is now profitable, generating a solid HUF 6.7 billion (EUR 16.2 million) for the owner last year. That is four times what last year’s champion, Dinamo Zagreb, achieved (HUF 1.7 billion, EUR 4.1 billion). The team’s finances are exceptional in the first-class Croatian football league, in which it occupies 5th place.

Historic moment: permanent Puskás Museum opens its doors in Budapest – PHOTOS

The myth of Hungary’s legendary Golden Team will continue, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said on Monday, adding that successors of Ferenc Puskás and his team-mates must be capable of following their example.

The opening ceremony included speeches by Mária Schmidt, Director General of the House of Terror Museum and Chief Curator of the Puskás Museum, Emilio Butragueno, former Real Madrid star and current International Director, Sándor Csányi, President of the Hungarian Football Association (MLSZ), and video messages from Gianni Infantino, the head of the International Football Federation (FIFA) and the European Football Association (UEFA), and Aleksander Ceferin.

Orbán: We rebuilt the Hungarian football

Addressing the opening of a Puskás Museum in Budapest, Orbán said that 15 years ago, when his government began its efforts “to rebuild Hungarian football, “the favorite sport of the world and of Hungarians was “in ruins in Hungary.” “It was unbelievable that in fifty years, Hungary had nearly disappeared from the map in an area where it had been among the world’s best,” Orbán said.

“Russians back home, long live Hungarian freedom, go Hungary, go Hungarians!”

– Orbán quoted the former slogan, stressing that while communism is essentially internationalist, football is national.

Thanks to Puskás, Hungary has been aware of the Golden Team myth, Orbán said.

“When we founded a football academy and named it after him, or built a stadium … we continued to see world championships and champions’ league finals, stunning goals and beating Britain, Germany, or Brazil …,” he said.

The Puskás Museum, “a worthy memorial” dedicated to the legendary football player, has been set up within Budapest’s Puskás Stadium as a completion of the facility, Orbán said.

The relationship between Real Madrid and Ferenc Puskás is eternal

Emilio Butragueno, Real Madrid International Director, said that Ferenc Puskás was one of the most outstanding figures of Real Madrid, as he was part of the legendary team that, together with Alfredo Di Stefano and Paco Gento, under the leadership of President Santiago Bernabéu, changed the history of Real Madrid and world football forever.

According to Butragueno, the Real Madrid community remembers Ferenc Puskás not only as a footballer who achieved extraordinary results wearing the club crest and shirt but also as a man who represented values that captured the hearts of all Madridites. These include hard work, self-sacrifice, team spirit, respect, camaraderie, and humility, all of which are paramount for Real Madrid,” he added.

The International Director stressed that the entire Real Madrid community takes special pride in the museum, which also serves to transmit the values above. He concluded by saying that they are also grateful to Ferenc Puskás for his great role in the fact that so many people in Hungary are also fans of Real Madrid.

“This relationship between Real Madrid and Ferenc Puskás is eternal,” he concluded.

Video messages from UEFA and FIFA

A video message from Aleksander Ceferin, President of the European Football Association (UEFA), and Gianni Infantino, President of FIFA, was played at the opening ceremony. Both paid tribute to Ferenc Puskás, highlighting his significant role in European and world football. The latter called the exhibition beautiful and world-class.

UEFA Nations League: Hungary levels the score against Germany in 99th minute

In a gripping UEFA Nations League clash, Hungary staged a remarkable comeback to secure a 1-1 draw against Germany. After Felix Nmecha put the visitors ahead in the second half, Dominik Szoboszlai converted a last-minute penalty to level the score. The game was marked by a heartfelt gesture from German captain Julian Nagelsmann towards Hungary’s assistant coach, Ádám Szalai, who is recovering from a recent health scare.

Thrilling UEFA Nations League clash

In a tense encounter during the UEFA Nations League, Germany dominated the early stages against Hungary, showcasing a series of dangerous attacks, summarises M4 sport. Despite their control, the Hungarian defence held firm, limiting Germany’s chances. However, Hungary broke the deadlock after 15 minutes, with Nübel making crucial saves to deny Schäfer and Nagy. As the first half progressed, Germany regained control but struggled to convert their opportunities, while Hungary’s counter-attacks proved more effective, culminating in a thrilling match where both teams displayed resilience.

The second half saw an increase in intensity as both sides penetrated the midfield with dangerous plays. Germany made significant substitutions, introducing top talents like Musiala and Havertz, who nearly scored immediately. Yet, Hungary continued to push, with Szoboszlai’s corner kick almost ending up in the net. Just when it seemed that Germany would secure victory with Nmecha’s goal, Hungary fought back valiantly. In a dramatic finish, Szoboszlai converted a penalty for handball in the dying moments, ensuring a hard-fought draw for Hungary as they look ahead to their next UEFA Nations League match in March against a Division B opponent.

You can watch the last thrilling minutes of the match and the goal scored by Szoboszlai HERE.

Thoughtful gift for Szalai

Telex writes that moments before the UEFA Nations League clash between Hungary and Germany, German national team captain Julian Nagelsmann presented Marco Rossi with a jersey bearing the words “Jobbulást, Ádám!” in Hungarian (meaning “Get well soon, Ádám!”). Ádám Szalai, who served as an assistant coach for Hungary, collapsed during Saturday’s match against the Netherlands and was subsequently hospitalised. Thankfully, he is now in stable condition and recovering at home with his family. Due to medical advice, Szalai was unable to attend the match against Germany at the Puskás Aréna.

Attention! Traffic changes and public transport disruptions tonight in popular Budapest district

new puskás stadium traffic change

As Budapest gears up for the highly anticipated UEFA Nations League match between Hungary and Germany, fans should prepare for significant traffic changes and public transport disruptions in the vicinity of the Puskás Arena.

Traffic changes tonight

As Bors reports, the UEFA Nations League match between Hungary and Germany is set to kick off at the Puskás Arena on Tuesday at 8.45 pm, prompting significant traffic changes in the surrounding area. The Budapest Transport Centre (BKK) has announced that road closures will begin at 5.30 pm, affecting several key routes including Dózsa György Road and Stefánia Road.

Fans are encouraged to access the stadium on foot from nearby metro stations, such as Puskás Ferenc Stadion and Keleti Railway Station, as parking is limited. To avoid congestion, BKK recommends using public transport, particularly metro lines 2 and 4 and tram line 1. The affected streets will remain closed until 23:30, creating a need for drivers and public transport users to plan their journeys accordingly.

Public transport disruptions

The Budapest Transport Centre (BKK) has announced that metro lines 2 and 4, along with tram line 1, will operate more frequently before and after the match to accommodate fans. Additionally, all buses on Thököly Road will stop at Reiner Frigyes Park and Thököly Road-Stefánia Road. Due to road closures, bus 30 will detour along Thököly út and Dózsa György Road without stopping at Verseny Street, while trolleybus lines 75 and 75A will reroute to Keleti Railway Station instead of Puskás Ferenc Stadion.

The match is set to kick off at 8.45 pm, with traffic disruptions starting as early as 5.30 pm. Key routes such as Dózsa György út and Stefánia út will be closed, necessitating adjustments for public transport users. Trolleybus 77 will operate along Hungária körút instead of Stefánia út, and buses 95, 130, and 195 will not stop at their usual terminus near the stadium. Fans are strongly advised to utilise public transport options to avoid congestion and ensure a smooth journey to the arena amidst the anticipated traffic changes.

Global football sensation Mohamed Salah captivated audiences at the 43rd Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF 2024) with an inspiring revelation: the secret behind his extraordinary success lies in books. “Ninety percent of my success is rooted in what I’ve learned from books. Reading has helped me become a better version of myself,” Salah shared, underscoring the profound impact of reading on his personal and professional journey.

The Role of Books in Shaping a Champion

A fan of psychology books, Salah credited them with helping him better navigate relationships and life’s challenges. “They’ve given me tools to manage emotions, understand people, and tackle the ups and downs of life,” he noted.

From Humble Beginnings to Global Stardom

Salah’s journey began in his native Egypt, where he trained at Al Mokawloon Al Arab SC before embarking on a stellar European career. After stints at Basel, Chelsea, Fiorentina, and Roma, Salah joined Liverpool FC in 2017, solidifying his place as one of football’s greats.

He also shared an exciting future plan:

“I’m considering writing a biography to inspire younger generations who dream of taking a similar path to mine.”

A Legacy of Learning and Growth

With a glittering career that includes Premier League and UEFA Champions League titles, Golden Boots, and the Puskás Award, Salah’s accomplishments speak to his immense talent and perseverance. Yet, his success is equally rooted in his unwavering commitment to personal growth and self-improvement.

Netherlands defeated Hungary, Hungarian former player, assistant coach Szalai almost died – PHOTOS

Netherlands szalai defeated Hungary, Hungarian former player, coach Szalai almost died

An unfortunate but ultimately comprehensive defeat in Amsterdam on Saturday evening means Hungary will finish third in their group and contest a play-off tie in March for the right to play in League A next time. Meanwhile, Ádám Szalai is in a stable condition in hospital after the assistant coach fell ill by the side of the pitch in the game’s early stages and was taken to hospital.

“Thank you for the many messages, I’m fine”, Szalai wrote on Facebook.

Netherlands defeated Hungary

Head coach Marco Rossi opted for his first-choice goalkeeper this autumn, Dénes Dibusz, in goal behind a three-man defence of Botond Balogh, Willi Orbán and Márton Dárdai. The long-favoured 3-4-3 formation featured Loic Nego on the right of midfield, Tamás Nikitscher and András Schafer in the centre and Zsolt Nagy on the left behind wide forwards Roland Sallai and Dominik Szoboszlai and central striker Barnabás Varga, mlsz.hu wrote.

Hungary were on the attack from the outset, but Sallai’s superb pass in the opening minute was rendered meaningless by the offside flag after he’d found Nego on the right corner of the six-yard box, then Schäfer drove the ball narrowly over the crossbar after Szoboszlai’s shot had been blocked. Moments later, just as a penalty was being awarded to the Netherlands for a Nikitscher handball, the game was stopped and lengthy treatment administered to Hungary’s assistant coach Ádám Szalai after he’d taken ill on the touchline.

The match was delayed by 14 minutes and on its resumption, striker Wout Weghorst put the home team ahead with a coolly-taken penalty straight down the middle of the goal. Hungary could have equalised almost immediately, but once left-winger Zsolt Nagy had crossed Nego’s left-footed, crossfield pass back across goal, Sallai could only head the ball within goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen’s grasp.

Ádám Szalai, “the heart of the team” got better

Dibusz then produced a fine finger-tip save to deny Tijjani Reijnders and more routine stops from Dumfries, Gakpo and Malen as Hungary battled to stay within sight of parity, but they succumbed again in the 11th minute of first-half added time, Zsolt Nagy’s foul on Malen in the Hungary penalty area handing Gakpo the chance to double his team’s lead from the spot, an opportunity he accepted with relish as sent Dibusz the wrong way and thumped his spotkick into the left side of the goal, halfway up.

Two-nil down at half-time was a daunting situation to be in for Hungary, especially as their fans no doubt remember with a shiver their last visit here in 2013 when the team lost 8-1, but the players battled on fearlessly, no doubt buoyed by news that their colleague Ádám Szalai’s condition had stabilised and he was being assessed in hospital.

Weghorst struck Hungary’s crossbar in the 50th minute with a sumptuous curling effort and Dibusz continued to impress in the Hungary goal as the Netherlands’ dominance continued, but a special strike in the 64th minute eventually extended the Euro 2024 semi-finalists’ lead, Dumfries’s thunderous volley giving Dibusz no chance. Youngst Levente Szabó entered the fray for his international debut on the hour mark before Dumfries then turned provider in the 86th minute, his cross headed into the Hungary net by substitute Teun Koopmeiners.

The latter almost doubled his goals tally in the match a minute later, only for his hooked shot to clip the crossbar on its way over, while at the other end, Willi Orbán also struck the crossbar in the remaining few minutes, as well as seeing an effort go wide of the target as Hungary sought a consolation goal. None was forthcoming though and thus the final score was set at 4-0.

This result ensures that Hungary will contest a Nations League play-off in March for the right to be in League A during the next edition of the Nations League in 2026, while the Netherlands will join group winners Germany in the quarter-final knockout stages of this current edition, the latter having set a Nations League record by defeating the group’s bottom team Bosnia 7-1 in the evening’s other match. Bosnia will be relegated to League B for next time. There’s still one round of group fixtures to play though, Hungary rounding off their campaign at home to Germany in Budapest’s Puskás Aréna on Tuesday evening.

Nations League: two new faces in Hungarian men’s squad for November double-header

Head coach Marco Rossi has called up two potential debutants for Hungary’s final Nations League group-stage matches against the Netherlands and Germany later this month.

Nations League – Hungary: two debutants

Ferencváros’s Zsombor Gruber and German Bundesliga II club Braunschweig’s Levente Szabó can make their international bows in Hungary’s next two fixtures after being selected by Rossi to join his latest 24-man squad in November, while two other notable names on the list are Milos Kerkez and Loic Nego, both of whom have recovered from injuries which kept them out of October’s two Nations League fixtures. Furthermore, Dániel Gera, a late call-up to last month’s squad, retains his place.

Hungary Men’s freshest squad (surnames first):

Goalkeepers:
Dibusz Dénes (Ferencvárosi TC)
Szappanos Péter (Al Fateh SC)
Tóth Balázs (Blackburn Rovers)

Defenders:
Balogh Botond (Parma)
Botka Endre (Ferencvárosi TC)
Dárdai Márton (Hertha BSC)
Fiola Attila (Újpest FC)
Orbán Willi (RB Leipzig)
Szűcs Kornél (Plymouth Argyle)

Midfielders:
Bolla Bendegúz (Rapid Wien)
Gera Dániel (DVTK)
Kata Mihály (MTK)
Kerkez Milos (Bournemouth)
Nagy Ádám (Spezia Calcio)
Nagy Zsolt (Puskás Akadémia)
Nego Loic (Le Havre AC)
Nikitscher Tamás (Kecskeméti TE)
Schäfer András (Union Berlin)

Forwards:
Csoboth Kevin (St. Gallen)
Gruber Zsombor (Ferencvárosi TC)
Sallai Roland (Galatasaray)
Szabó Levente (Braunschweig)
Szoboszlai Dominik (Liverpool)
Varga Barnabás (Ferencvárosi TC)

“Apart from among the forwards, there’s no change to the squad in terms of those players who earned spots last time, because Kerkez and Nego had originally been in that squad too”, Rossi explained to mlsz.hu.

“Everyone has been playing regularly, with the exception of (Endre) Botka, whom we’ve called up because he is a useful member of the squad in terms of his capabilities and, moreover, he has always performed well for the national team.”

“In place of Dániel Gazdag and Ádám Martin we’ve called up Zsombor Gruber and Levente Szabó, because in Gazdag’s case his league championship season, for which he was injured, has finished now. Martin is unfortunately not in the best form, but they could easily become squad members again in March.”

“Their absences give us an exceptional opportunity to assess Gruber and Szabó at close quarters. We’ve known and followed both for a long time, because they earlier caught our attention when at Puskás Akadémia and MOL Fehérvár respectively. Szabó has performed well and scored goals for Braunschweig, while Gruber doesn’t always play for Fradi, but performs well whenever called upon, as we could see against Debrecen at the weekend.”

Nation League: next two matches

The Hungarian men’s national squad will meet in Telki on 11th November, before taking to the pitch in Amsterdam on 16th November to face hosts the Netherlands. They’ll then return to Hungary to entertain Germany in the Puskás Aréna three days later.

“We know very well that we’ll face two teams which are among the world’s elite national teams”, Rossi continued.

“We know exactly how strong they are and we’re familiar with their strengths, but we’ll try to produce our best performance possible against them and we’d be glad if these would go alongside good results too. One can pay a heavy price for even the tiniest mistake against teams as strong as these, but despite this, we’d like to play with bravery against the Netherlands and Germany too”, Rossi concluded.

UEFA Nations League: Can Hungary beat Netherlands and Germany to Reach the Quarterfinals?

With the 2024 UEFA Nations League already underway, Hungary is hoping to make it to the League A quarterfinals after winning their last game against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Hungary is currently ranking third with five points and standing level with their biggest group 3 rival Netherlands, who rank second thanks to their goal difference. As such, Marco Rossi’s side hope to secure their spot in the next phase of the UEFA Nations League by beating the Netherlands on their turn after recording a home draw in their first-leg game.

While Hungary’s confidence will be bolstered by their last win against Bosnia, they will have an uphill task beating the Netherlands at their home ground. However, the Netherlands haven’t booked a win in their last three UEFA Nations League games after recording a draw against Germany and Hungary in their first-leg meetings and losing to Germany in the second leg. That seems like good news to Hungary, but they will also face the in-form Germany in their last group-stage match.

So can Hungary beat Netherlands and Germany to make it to the next stage or will this be the end of their 2024/2025 UEFA Nations League campaign? Here are match previews and betting predictions for these two games according to the football experts on SportyTrader.

Netherlands vs Hungary Match Preview (16th November)

Netherlands is set to welcome an in-form Hungary at the Johan Cruijff ArenaA in what promises to be a thrilling UEFA Nations League fixture as both teams hope to book the crucial three points. Both the Netherlands and Hungary have five points after four games, although the Dutch side has a slight advantage. However, the Netherlands started their campaign with an impressive 5-2 victory against Bosnia.

Hungary on the other hand had a rough start in their UEFA Nations League group stage campaign after losing 5-0 against Group 3 favorites Germany. They also struggled to bounce back in their second game after struggling to score against Bosnia but shared the spoils after a goalless. That was before holding back the Netherlands to a 1-1 draw in the third game and exerted their revenge against Bosnia with a 2-0 away win. That said, betting experts recommend betting on both teams to score since another draw might be on the books for this fixture.

Hungary vs Germany match preview (19th November)

While Hungary hopes they can at least secure a draw from this fixture to increase their chances of making it to the 2024/2025 UEFA Nations League quarterfinals, Germany is the outright favorite. The Germans have recorded a strong campaign this year and they will hope to finish the group stage unbeaten. Julian Nagelsmann’s side has proven to be a formidable opponent for any team in the Nations League, with their only coming against the Netherlands in their second game.

Hungary on the other side started their group stage campaign with a humiliating loss against the Germans and they will be seeking revenge when they welcome them to the Puskas Arena Park. However, considering how Marco Rossi’s side have struggled with their finishing to record goals, betting experts predict the Germans will overwhelm them once again. That will mean Hungary might not make it to the quarterfinals if the Netherlands manages to draw or win against them and beat Bosnia in their last match.

English soccer fans outraged about Hungarian “worst food in football”

The worst food in football (Copy)

Tottenham Hotspur fans came to Hungary last week to face Ferencváros in the UEFA Europa League. Hungarian media agreed that Ferencváros fought valiantly but could not defeat the English club. Interestingly, English fans were not outraged by the work of the referees or how the players of the Hungarian club played. They were annoyed because of the food offered in the beautifully renewed stadium of Ferencváros. Daily Mail writes that our “zsíros deszka” should compete for the title of the worst food in football. Do you agree with them?

Tottenham Hotspur shocked in Budapest

According to Daily Mail, modern soccer fans are no longer satisfied with beer and some bread or meat. They would like to enjoy culinary pleasures after occupying their seats and starting chatting with a neighbour about what happens on the pitch. Reportedly, in the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, you can even order pumpkin and pine nut ravioli with vine tomato sauce and basil pesto. The contrast could not be bigger with the food offered at the Ferencváros stadium in Budapest.

The British magazine said fans were shocked to see that in Hungary, they could buy “traditional pub food” in the stadium: bread and dripping (“zsíros kenyér” or “zsíros deszka” in Hungarian). We wrote about that “dish” in THIS article, along with other Hungarian foods that make foreigners go nuts.

The worst food in football is Hungarian?

What is bread and dripping? In short, a slice of bread with lard and some slices of onions as topping. The price is HUF 380, almost EUR 1. A photo and the price were shared on Sports Scran, an X-page posting about “the best and worst food from sports venues around the world”. The page has more than 586,000 followers. The tweet already has more than 4.8 million views.

English soccer fans and readers were outraged. One wrote that such food would be overpriced even in England. “Is this a meal or something from a fraternity hazing ritual?”, added another. A third asked whether a 5-year-old made that. However, some defended our pub food writing that it can save one’s life after several beers, a Spurs fan wrote he enjoyed eating it.

Even so, the Daily Mail said our “zsíros deszka” deserves the title of the worst food in football.

Daily Mail, Daily Star used ‘fake’ photo

Blikk, a Hungarian tabloid, rehashed the original photo from the depths of the internet. The photo was used by Footy Scran for the first time, another thematic X page, on 19 November 2023. Then, it had “only” 1.2 million views, and Daily Mail’s competitor, Daily Star, wrote about it. The reactions were the same. For example, one comment writer said he would go hungry if he had to eat that, so he does not wonder why the country’s name is Hung(a)ry.

But the photo had to be taken earlier because, on 19 November 2023, nobody bought ‘fatty bread’ in the Ferenváros stadium’s guest sector. Moreover, the stadium sold square-shaped bread at that time for HUF 350 instead of 380.

Of course, some English fans can think that our “national bar food” is the worst in the world, but sometimes it can be very handy if you plan a long night with friends and some beers.

Szoboszlai can become the captain of Liverpool next summer

Goal.com wrote that next summer, Dominik Szoboszlai has a chance to become a member of the captain ‘trio’ of Liverpool. Last week, Fabrizio Romano wrote that Liverpool keeps searching for Szalah’s successor.

If that happens – goal.com believes – Szoboszlai will become the third member of the captain trio of Liverpool with Robertson and Alisson. Szoboszlai has been the captain of the Hungarian national team since 2022.
