Unexpected: President Xi will announce colossal Chinese carmaking plant near Hungarian city

Chinese carmaking plant Xi Jinping

Chinese President Xi Jinping will come to Hungary in May to meet with PM Viktor Orbán in Budapest. However, according to the information acquired by Szabad Európa (Free Europe), a Hungarian media outlet, Xi and Orbán will visit another Hungarian city. Instead of admiring its treasures, they will announce the building of a colossal Chinese carmaking plant.

Orbán and Xi to announce the newest Chinese investment in Hungary

The Chinese President will spend two days in Hungary: one in Budapest and another in Pécs, Southern Hungary. That is because he will meet with PM Orbán in the capital but travel to Pécs to announce the arrival of Great Wall Motors, a Chinese carmaking company, which plans to build a plant near the Southern Hungarian city.

Before this, Xi will meet with French President Macron and Serbian President Vučić. Gergely Gulyás, the Minister of the Prime Minister’s Office, said during Thursday’s Cabinet Briefing that Xi will arrive in Hungary on 8 May and stay until 10 May. 9 May marks the anniversary of the end of WWII in Europe.

We know little about the detailed program of the Chinese leader. However, Szabad Európa‘s unnamed sources said Xi and Orbán would travel to Pécs to announce the building of Great Wall Motors’ (GWM) first European plant near Bicsérd, a village close to Pécs.

Will the Chinese carmaking plant harm Pécs’s water supply?

First, mfor.hu shared information about GWM’s plans in Hungary in March. One month later, 24.hu wrote that a 600-hectare land was reclassified near Pécs to an industrial zone. The area has a key role in the city’s water supply. They also speculated that the Chinese would probably build a battery plant, but that suspicion was proven wrong.

Mfor.hu wrote in March that GWM will produce medium-category Ora and premium-category Wey cars. The Chinese company sold 3,400 of the latter in Germany in 2023. The company also makes electric cars and batteries.

Six hundred hectares seems enormous compared to BYD’s 40 hectares in Szeged. We wrote about that investment and why locals are outraged in THIS article.

The Chinese will import employees to Szeged

The Chinese company plans to employ 8-9 thousand people in Szeged. If the Hungarian workforce were not enough, they would hire Romanians and Serbians to do the job. That is why they will build a container town with 1,400 places.

Based on informants, the Hungarian government did not want the Chinese to bring their new plant to Szeged. However, the Chinese liked the city’s “political stability” (László Botka has been the city’s mayor since 2002) and that it is near the planned Belgrade-Budapest railway.

Minister deleted articles about the Chinese investment

Several government-close media outlets republished Mfor’s original article about the GWM investment in March. However, Antal Rogán and his ministry made them delete those writings. That is because the Hungarian government did not want to leak the story before the conclusion of the negotiations with the Chinese.

According to VSquare’s newsletter, that story clearly shows how dependent the Orbán cabinet is on the Chinese investors.

Based on the news, Xi’s delegation in Hungary will number more than 400. Furthermore, we should expect stricter road closures in Budapest, Pécs and at Budapest Airport than during Pope Francis’s visit.

British American Tobacco is expanding production in Pécs, in south-west Hungary, with a new 60 billion forint (EUR 152.4m) plant manufacturing smokeless products, creating 450 jobs, Péter Szijjártó, the minister of foreign affairs and trade, said in Budapest on Friday.

The new plant will enable BAT to relocate the production of new products to Pécs, turning the plant a global manufacturing centre in reduced-risk products, he said.

BAT currently employs some 1,000 people in Hungary, Szijjártó added.

The plant is certified carbon neutral, showing the government’s dedication to environmental protection while boosting economic performance, he added.

UK companies are the 7th largest group of investors in Hungary, employing some 50,000 people, he said. Bilateral trade has reached a record 6.5 billion euros last year, he added.

Holiday trick: Flying from Hungary? Choose this airport!

flying from hungary malta pécs

We have great news for you if you’re flying from Hungary this summer. Since the end of March, you can fly not only from Budapest to Malta, one of the most fascinating islands in the Mediterranean, but also from Pécs, which is dubbed the Hungarian Mediterranean capital. Prices are much better than from the capital, and we won’t be less comfortable either.

Flying from Hungary: choose Pécs!

Universal Air recently announced that from 26 March 2024, it is operating two flights a week between Malta, Pécs and Munich, Pénzcentrum writes. They promise to combine the cost efficiency of low-cost airlines with the premium services of traditional airlines. Their fleet consists of 78-seat Dash 8-400 aircraft, which are renowned for their fuel efficiency, comfort and speed, the airline said in a statement.

The flight will operate on Tuesdays and Fridays until 22 October, with a third weekly service from 2 June.

Cheaper to fly from Pécs than from Budapest Airport

Prices between Malta and Pécs start from EUR 79 one way, EUR 158 round trip, and between Pécs and Munich from EUR 49 one way, EUR 98 round trip. This price includes a checked suitcase of up to 15 kg and one piece of hand luggage of 7 kg.

This is much cheaper than flying from Budapest.

Pénzcentrum searched for the cheapest July ticket to Valletta with the help of Skyscanner: Wizz Air will take passengers to and from the Maltan capital for HUF 50,580 (EUR 129.13) without baggage, and the cheapest return fare with a 20 kg bag is HUF 109,914 (EUR 280.61) per person, with a week in between. Of course, due to dynamic pricing, this can change constantly.

Thus, it is HUF 47,000 (EUR 120) cheaper if you fly from Pécs. Even if you subtract the HUF 6,000 (EUR 15.32) train tickets, you can still save HUF 41,000 (EUR 104.68).

Happy flying from Hungary!

You can travel to Malta, Munich, Corfu from this Hungarian city, free airport shuttle bus available

You can travel to Malta, Munich, Corfu by free airport shuttle buses

Universal Air, a Maltese low-cost airline, announced flights from Pécs International Airport to Corfu, Munich and Malta this March. The first planes had already taken off from the Pécs-Pogány International Airport. A local bus company announced direct and free airport shuttles from Pécs to the local airport approximately 10 kilometres away.

Based on a local news outlet, Tüke Busz Ltd. is beginning a new service. From 26 March, they will launch direct shuttles to the Pécs-Pogány International Airport. The buses will start from the downtown of the Southwest Hungarian city and will carry passengers on Tuesdays and Fridays to and from the departing and arriving planes.

The buses will have multiple stops between the airport and Pécs’s train station (Főpályaudvar). Passengers can travel on the buses for free with their luggage.

You can fly to this summer island paradise from Pécs, new destinations may follow

Corfu new destination Pécs Airport summer no-go zones

Universal Air, a Maltese airline, is launching its first flight on the Malta-Pécs-Munich route on 26 March. They plan to expand their network by conquering less well-connected regional airports like Pécs-Pogány, which is how they would like to compete with budget airlines.

According to turizmus.com, a Hungarian travel news outlet, Universal Air operated as a charter airline in 2023. This March, they are launching their first scheduled flight on the Malta-Pécs-Munich route.

They aim to provide premium economy service for their passengers while maintaining low prices. Thus, they would like to offer a “golden middle way” for their customers between the budget and the traditional airlines. Simon Cook, the CEO of Universal Air, said they would include 15 kg baggage and hand baggage into their ticket price.

The airline plans to start three flights per week from Malta to Athens, Corfu, Ibiza, Munich, Palermo and Pécs, but they plan to expand their network by the end of 2024.

Corfu is the next destination from Pécs

The CEO believes their modern fleet will bring them into an advantageous position in the market. He added the capacity of their planes was only 78 seats, so they would like to offer flights to less well-connected, small, regional airports. That is where they believe there is a market gap that they could fill.

He cited Pécs as an example. “There are over a million people within a 45-minute drive from the airport but there’s no scheduled service,” he said. “With small aircraft, we’re able to go in and accept hitting low numbers to connect somewhere that has not had a scheduled service since around 2018”, Mr Cook told Times of Malta.

In February, Mr Cook hoped they could expand their service from Pécs with a Corfu destination.

According to the official Facebook page of the Pécs-Pogány Airport, the first plane to Corfu will take off on 5 June and will commute until 23 October.

Shocking: Internationally acknowledged, 46-year-old Hungarian virologist dies to suicide

46-year-old Hungarian virologist committed suicide

A local news outlet wrote that Ferenc Jakab, an internationally recognised Hungarian virologist, and deputy rector of the University of Pécs, died to suicide due to private reasons.

According to Pécs Aktuál, both his family and friends were startled after hearing of the tragedy. Based on the information of the local news outlet, the university will provide a detailed necrologue only on Monday.

Mr Jakab was one of the symbols of the vaccination program in Hungary. His professional explanations and work helped many Hungarians survive that period. Furthermore, he lead the COVID-19 research team at the university.

Pécs Aktuál promised to updated their article the moment they know more about the tragic death of the young Hungarian professor.

Of course, conteo believers already have multiple explanation for Mr Jakab’s death, all connected to the COVID-19 pandemic and the vaccination campaign.

New regular flights to connect Mediterranean paradise with Hungarian and German cities

New regular flights to connect Mediterranean island, German city with Hungarian city (Copy)

Regular flights will connect a Mediterranean summer paradise island with a South Hungarian and a South German city.

According to pecsma.hu, Universal Air, a Maltese airline, is to launch new flights connecting Malta with Pécs, South Hungary, and Munich, South Germany this March. Ticket bookings are set to start shortly, according to the local media outlet. This marks a significant development for Pécs, as it has been 15 years since regular flights connected the city to other destinations. Additionally, plans are in motion to establish a new route to Corfu, Greece, for the summer season.

The first flight, carrying 78 passengers who are all employees of the Maltese airline, touched down in Pécs yesterday morning. This milestone flight signifies the beginning of seamless travel between the idyllic Mediterranean island, steeped in history and bathed in perpetual sunshine, and the charming city of southern Hungary.

Scheduled services will commence on 26th March from Pécs airport, with a travel time of 2 hours and 20 minutes to Malta and 1 hour and 20 minutes to Munich. The announcement of these new routes was made during a press conference held at Pécs-Pogány Airport.

Pécs was a pioneer of modern air travelling

Pécs, a historic city, has a rich aviation legacy, having pioneered modern air travel in Hungary. Attila Péterffy, the mayor of Pécs, highlighted that the last charter flight from Pécs departed 12 years ago, while the last regular flight departed 16 years ago. Pécs was also the site of Hungary’s first domestic flight to Budapest in 1930.

The mayor expressed his satisfaction with the conclusion of lengthy negotiations with Universal Air, emphasising that local businesses and the university were consulted to gauge air travel needs.

Acknowledging Munich’s status as an international air hub, Mayor Péterffy underscored its importance in facilitating travel for locals to destinations worldwide. He noted that a significant portion of tourists visiting Pécs hail from southern Germany, with many German students enrolled at the local university.

According to the mayor, Tüke Busz will carry the passengers between the city and the airport.

Simon Cook, CEO of Universal Air, hailed Pécs as a hidden gem and pledged to promote it vigorously among passengers. He revealed plans for a new flight route between Pécs and Corfu, with an announcement expected in May.

Favourable luggage rules on new Pécs flights

Under the new flight arrangements, passengers will have a choice between economy and business class tickets, with a luggage allowance of 15 kg plus a handbag included in the fare. Online check-in will be available, and passengers can enjoy free parking in Malta.

Mr Cook also revealed their plan to launch a new flight between Pécs and Corfu, which is scheduled for May.

Márk Dragovácz, CEO of the company operating Pécs-Pogány Airport, expressed optimism about the partnership with Universal Air, emphasising their shared commitment to expanding flight options.

The local government of Pécs will invest approximately HUF 70 million (EUR 180,500) to develop the airport and expand its crew. The local government of Pécs is investing approximately HUF 70 million (EUR 180,500) to enhance airport facilities and bolster the airport’s workforce. Reopening the airport was a key campaign promise of the incumbent mayor, eagerly awaited by the business, university, and tourism sectors.

While MPs of Fidesz have attempted to claim credit for the success, citing government assistance, local media reports indicate minimal involvement from the foreign ministry in achieving this milestone.

VIDEO: rural air travel in Hungary is on the rise again

Pécs Airport

Hungarian rural air transport has reached another milestone as a new scheduled flight commences from Pécs.

Without exaggeration, those who visited the Pécs-Pogány airport on Tuesday morning witnessed a historic moment. It was here that the announcement was made of the resumption of regular flights from Pécs airport.

This marks a significant development, considering the absence of charter flights for 12 years and scheduled flights for 16 years.

According to PécsMa, a plane touched down at approximately nine o’clock, transporting its crew from Malta. The aircraft, with a capacity of 78 passengers, will service multiple routes starting from the 26th of March.

Initially, two routes will be available. The journey to Munich will last 1 hour and 20 minutes, while the flight to Malta will take 2 hours and 20 minutes. Another route is planned in May, likely bound for Corfu.

The flights are being operated by Universal Air. The choice of Munich as a destination is no coincidence, given that a significant number of tourists visiting Pécs originate from southern Germany. The county seat of Baranya shares strong business ties with the region, and the University of Pécs hosts many German students. Additionally, plans have been disclosed for a bus service to facilitate quick and easy access between the airport and Pécs.

Tickets will soon be available for purchase on Universal Air’s website, followed by availability through travel agents. Two pricing tiers will be offered: a premium business option and a more affordable leisure option. The ticket price will include a 15 kg bag and a hand luggage, as reported by vg.hu.

South Hungary’s Baranya County saw 12 centimetres of snow yesterday. However, tomorrow, spring will come to Hungary, with maximums reaching 17 degrees in some parts of the country.

According to idokep.hu, 12 cm of snow surprised the locals of Szentlőrinc, Baranya County. The precipitation block causing intensive snowfall will leave Hungary to the southeast. In Pécs and its neighbourhood, the snow layer reached 6 cm.

Spring to visit Hungary this week

The weather will be very different in the coming days compared to the first half of the week.

The Hungarian Meteorological Services (HungaroMet) said a cyclone will take snow to France and spring to Hungary this week. The ‘Irene’ will arrive on Wednesday, bringing strong winds, lots of precipitation and snow.

However, thanks to the cyclone, Hungary will get a subtropical warm front. As a result, spring will rule Hungary on Thursday. Furthermore, based on some forecasts, even heat records may break that day. The 1918 heat record of Kaposvár, for example, was 17 degrees on 18 January.

You can now explore this Hungarian region through a virtual tour

people using vr headset

Hungary’s history-filled region, Baranya, invites us on a captivating journey. The Treasures of Baranya project opens its simulated doors to twelve remarkable sites, allowing enthusiasts to embark on a virtual tour from the comfort of their homes.

The Treasures of Baranya project

According to Pécsaktuál.hu, Baranya is a region where the past seamlessly intertwines with the present. The Treasures of Baranya project introduces a new way to explore the county’s heritage. The initiative uses 360-degree camera footage and innovative technology to provide an immersive experience, offering a unique perspective on the historical treasures that define Baranya. More than 40 national treasures listed in the county’s Repository of Values are showcased through digital formats, making them accessible for virtual exploration. By utilising virtual reality glasses on the Baranya Kincsei (Baranya’s Treasures) website or downloadable content, individuals can delve into the county’s treasures without leaving their homes.

Beyond reality: a virtual journey through time

These virtual tours transcend traditional reality by incorporating a diverse range of multimedia elements. As participants stroll through these historic sites, they encounter film clips, pictures, audio, and video materials that bridge the gap between the past and the present. For instance, a walk through Király Street in Pécs not only reveals its current state but also provides glimpses of its tramway past, accompanied by captivating narratives from contemporary artists.

Unique perspectives and special shots

The virtual tours offer more than static views. Special shots provide perspectives not readily available in real life. Wonder how the TV Tower of Pécs would appear with an additional 30 meters? Or envision climbing to the top of the Zengő Lookout for a panoramic view that unveils a different facet of the landscape. These special shots add an extra layer of fascination to the virtual exploration.

Baranya county treasury: a virtual exhibition experiment

The Baranya Repository of Values initiated this project as an experimental virtual exhibition, unlocking enormous potential for a global audience. As we wrote before, the prevalence of virtual showcases increased during the pandemic. While thankfully, the pandemic isn’t the main reason for these exhibitions anymore, it served as a catalyst for the rise of virtual tours. They remain valuable not only as a response to the need for staying at home but also as an accessible way for individuals to explore and interact with content conveniently from their own spaces. Beyond catering to those with mobility restrictions, these virtual tours transport individuals worldwide to experience the county’s unique atmosphere.

Twelve open doors to Baranya’s heritage

Twelve carefully selected sites currently welcome virtual visitors, each offering a curated glimpse into Baranya’s natural, social, cultural, artistic, and archaeological assets. The sites include:

  1. Széchenyi Square and the mosque of Gazi Qasim Pasha
  2. Cella Septichora, Old Christian Mausoleum
  3. Dóm Square and Barbican
  4. The Cathedral of Pécs
  5. Máriagyűd Shrine
  6. Mohács National Monument
  7. Castle of Siklós
  8. Castle of Szigetvár
  9. Villány wine culture and wineries
  10. Danube-Drava National Park
  11. Pécs TV Tower
  12. Zengő lookout tower

How to access the virtual tours?

These captivating virtual tours are accessible on the Baranya Treasures website under the “VIRTUÁLIS SÉTÁK” (Virtual Tours) section. Visitors can now explore the cultural, educational, and artistic gems of Baranya, fostering not only cultural appreciation but also contributing to the development of tourism and industrial opportunities within the region. However, we also encourage you to visit the region in person too. For example, the Christmas market in Pécs, which you can read more about HERE.

Where to find the best Christmas markets in Hungary

Christmas market

Sure, you may consider visiting Vienna in the Advent season. But hang on a sec until you see these marvellous Christmas markets in Hungary! We bet you’ll instantly change your mind. Here’s the undeniable proof that you don’t need to venture far to enjoy some mesmerising festive fairs. Christmas markets are many and merry in Hungary. If you still want to explore Vienna though, read more HERE.

Budapest

Naturally, the capital is the first option that comes to every one’s mind when conjuring up images of festive fun. It’s the biggest city of the country and has at least a dozen good Christmas fairs every year.
The three main Christmas markets are located on the Vörösmarty Square, around the St. Stephen’s Basilica and in the Buda Castle District. Get into the festive spirit by exploring one of these marvellous fairs, however, be aware of the high prices and the large flocks of tourists. If you have something more low-key in mind, you should venture out to Óbuda, a charming outer neighbourhood on the historic Buda side. On the Main Square, you’ll find a market that has it all: a fantastic ice skating rink, reasonable prices and lovely cafés. This Christmas market will most likely open on the 3rd of December.

Christmas market Óbuda

Danube Bend

The Danube Bend is for those who want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the big city without going too far away. There are quite a few wonderful towns that literally ooze Christmas spirit at this time of the year; Esztergom, Vác and Szentendre being a couple of them. Szentendre even boasts an actual Christmas shop just a couple streets down from the large Christmas tree the city’s municipality sets up every year. The Advent fun will kick off on the 25th of November here.

Szeged

Every year between the 1st and 24th of December, the city of Szeged launches the “Szeged Christmas Weeks”. During this time, the Dóm Square lights up and numerous stalls pop up everywhere offering to sell you goods and foods. Hot tip, if you’re not scared of heights: check out the recently opened Szeged Cathedral Dome or the nearby ferris wheel. Both offer magnificent views of the fair and are definitely worth a visit.

Christmas market Szeged

Pécs

Dubbed as the Mediterranean of Hungary, you wouldn’t expect this city to be on the list. However, leaving this gem out would be a huge mistake. The annual ‘Advent Fairy and Artisan Fair of Pécs’ is an unmissable event. There will be chimney cake, mulled wine and light painting. At the usual Christmas concerts, performers such as Jazzation and Zséda will entertain the crowd. The market will open it’s doors on the 1st of December and await visitors until the 24th.

Eger

One of Hungary’s most magical Christmas markets is to be found in Eger. The festive atmosphere is accentuated by the historical city sights. The winding cozy alleys that connect Dobó Square, Gárdonyi Square and Végvári Vitézek Square all light up once night falls. The breathtaking vistas are completed by the backdrop of the ancient castle. Who wouldn’t want to absorb the enchanting Christmas spirit that descends over Eger? You can enjoy the fair of Eger from the 25th of November up until Christmas night.

Székesfehérvár

The city of kings awaits visitors with a lovely nativity scene and special mini-concerts on every Advent Sunday. On the square in front of the City Hall a Christmas tree will be set up with a miniature train circling it. If you happen to be in Székesfehérvár on the weekdays, definitely drop by the fair to see the children of the city perform on stage. You can pay a visit from the 3rd to the 24th of December.

Christmas market Székesfehérvár

Siófok

Beautiful art nouveau hotel of Hungary is finally being renovated

Palatinus Pécs

It’s no secret that the Hotel Palatinus in Pécs is breathtaking in its beauty. It’s a widely renowned establishment that has been graced by the likes of Béla Bartók and the Habsburg family. Now, the current owners have decided it’s time for a renovation.

Read more about renovations happening around Hungary HERE and HERE.

How it all began

Over a century ago, in the heart of Hungary’s most Mediterranean city, Palatinus opened its doors. Back then, it bore the name Pannonia Grand Hotel. The hotel was Imre Hamerli’s idea, who came from the famous “Pécs gloves” dynasty and was quite affluent, a stroke of luck given the grand scale of the hotel. The architectural plans for the hotel were crafted by Andor Pilch, often regarded as Pécs’s answer to Gaudí.

The hotel found its place on Király Street, where the dynasty’s house once stood. It was demolished in 1913, and by 1915, the Hotel stood in its place. This was wondrously fast work considering the country was embroiled in World War I during that period.

The Hotel quickly became one of the most elite spots in Pécs. It boasted a grandiose ballroom, a cigar room and 70 spacious guest rooms, not to mention the elegant café and restaurant. The hotel, with its eccentric Art Nouveau style, attracted a diverse array of high- end personalities. In 1923, Bartók graced the impressive ballroom with a concert, and Habsburg royalty stayed in the luxurious guest rooms. But it wasn’t just royalty; among other notable guests, the Palatinus welcomed José Carrera and Plácido Domingo.

In 1975, it underwent renovation and was rebranded as Palatinus. Since its opening it has kept its original shine and prestige. Now, it’s on the cusp of yet another renovation, after which it’s bound to be even more opulent than ever.

Phases of renovation

The renovation contract was assigned to Ypsilon Vállalkozási Ltd., and the initial phase of the renovation will start on 3 January. The renovation project has a budget of HUF 2 billion (EUR 5,287,452.82). The renovation must proceed while the facility continues to operate partially.

According to this article, the renovation will encompass the second to sixth floors and all flat and pitched roofs. This comprehensive scope of work includes tasks such as demolition, structural construction, partitioning, floor preparation, plastering and installation of windows and doors. Additionally, there will be fire and waterproofing, reconstruction of flat ceilings, renovation of pitched ceilings and the creation of a walkable surface for the roof terrace.
Sadly, the property does not have national or local individual protection status, but it holds special significance in terms of the city’s aesthetic. This means that Ypsilon Vállalkozási Ltd. will need to plan the renovation carefully to preserve the urban character of Pécs.

Körber invests EUR 14.7 million in Hungary

kÖRBER

Péter Szijjártó, the minister of foreign affairs and trade, on Monday inaugurated an investment of German-owned Körber Hungaria in Pécs, in southern Hungary, and said that bilateral ties between Hungary and Germany would continue to develop “as long as they are rooted in reality”.

The 5.6 billion forint (EUR 14.7m) investment will increase the German-owned food and tobacco maker’s capacity and improve effectiveness, Péter Szijjártó said. The investment is supported by a 850 million forint government grant, he said.

The plant is the second largest of over 25 Körber centres on four continents, he said.

Bilateral trade with Germany, Hungary’s “number-one economic ally”, hit a record 67 billion euros last year, and is expected to reach 70 billion this year, Szijjártó said.

Germany has been the second largest investor in Hungary behind China in 2023, he added. That is thanks to German executives, who “make decisions based on experience rather than media coverage. As long as Hungarian-German economic cooperation is rooted in reality, it will thrive, as we can see here in Pécs,” he said.

“I came out and proud”- 3rd Pride Parade in Pécs

Pécs pride

1,000 police officers, 600 participants, 50 streets closed in the city – the 3rd Pride Parade under the motto Open, Free, Happy” organised by Diverse Youth Network took place on Saturday in Pécs. The event was the culmination of the Freedom of My Identity Human Rights festival. It is the only LGBTQ+ parade that happens outside of Budapest in Hungary.

Decorated with pro-LGBTQ+slogans, cars led the march in the rhythm of popular pop songs followed by enthusiastic crowds of people. The parade started at 2 PM from Tettye Square and came to a climax on Square 48. Due to bad weather conditions, only 500 people took part in the event, despite the fact that organisers expected thousands. However, the march was still called a success. “Shade never made anybody less gay”, “Break free” and “Love is equal” were just some of the phrases inscribed onto banners during the parade.

A round of support speeches was started by the Dutch ambassador to Hungary Désirée Bonis who stressed that “the sad truth is that across Hungary, including in Pécs, LGBTQ+ people and the values they stand for remain under attack. We are witnessing a pushback on equal rights of LGBTQ+ persons and gender equality. This is why during the past few years, the European Commission has dropped several Hungarian anti-LGBTQ+ policies before the European Court of Justice”.

Student rights activist Lili Pankotai underlined the problem of the current system from which stem “all these deprivations of rights”. Founder of “Szabad szívekért mozgalom” (“Movement for Free Hearts”), which supports LGBTQ+ teenagers, Mónika Molnár read a letter of complaint about hate against queer people in which the question that stands out is

“Why do people put so much energy into hating others that they have no energy left for their own happiness?”

The last speaker and a former student of Pécs University, Mithil Barath, expressed his gratitude to the city which “has given him the courage to come out and proud”.

U.S. ambassador to Hungary David Pressman was also present during the event. He visited Hungarian Catholics and Muslims to show his support for religious freedom and fundamental rights.

Just like other times, the counter-demonstration under the name “Hundreds of thousands against Pécs Pride” organised by Mi Hazánk took place at the same time. The Facebook event tried to encourage users to take part in it with the words: “Join us if you want to protect your children, your family and your traditional values”. Contrary to the event name, only around 10 people showed up to voice their dissatisfaction.

In summary, the third annual Pride celebration in Pécs showed support for LGBTQ+ rights which are constantly under attack in Hungary. The event highlighted the courage of the community and their allies.
