Hungarian Bence Máté wins Nature category at World Press Photo awards

bence máté award

Hungarian photographer Bence Máté’s photo “Survival instinct” won first prize in Nature category at the World Press Photo awards, the organisers said in Amsterdam on Friday.

The photo shows frogs struggling to the surface, surrounded by frogspawn, after their legs have been severed for culinary purposes and they were thrown back into the water.

The photo was made in Covasna, central Romania, last April.

“Frogs with their legs severed and surrounded by frogspawn struggle to the surface, after being thrown back into the water in Covasna, Eastern Carpathians, Romania, in April 2018.

Frogs legs are frequently harvested for food in the spring, when males and females gather to mate and spawn. Legs are sometimes severed while the animal is still living. Each year, about US$40 million worth are sold annually, with countries across the world participating in the trade”

Over 4,700 photographers sent in some 80,000 pictures to be considered for the awards, organisers said in a statement. The jury recommended 43 photographers from 25 countries for awards in various categories, they said.

The creative Hungarian mom you need to follow on Instagram

Instagram photo food

A Hungarian mother is ruling Instagram with her amazing-looking, creative and kid-friendly foods. She uses the simplest ingredients and creates something very special out of them. These meals look so yummy that even you will want a bite of them.

Anita Zsirmik is a mother of two, and she is also the creator of some pretty amazing food creations, posted on her Instagram account: @picifalat. She has become quite the master of presentation according to Dívány.hu. Anita started creating the fanciful dishes when she realised that her daughter was much pickier in terms of the food she was willing to eat than her son. Anita had to come up with unique, “child-friendly” (as she calls it) solutions to persuade her daughter to get all the necessary nutrition.

[button link=”https://dailynewshungary.com/this-hungarian-vizsla-is-the-coolest-travel-blogger-on-instagram/” type=”big” color=”green” newwindow=”yes”] This Hungarian vizsla is the coolest travel blogger on Instagram[/button]

She started creating these amazing forms and shapes for her daughter’s and for her own joy. Luckily, she decided to share them with the world when she created her Instagram account. You can follow her here: @picifalat

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bl_MUWGAr0E/

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bg_Qto3nrrk/

“Creativity has always been there in my life. I have been making things ever since I was a little girl; I drew, crocheted, made photographs or home décor. I always had these separate things, but I started focusing on this one thing when my daughter was born.”

Her creative process alternates: sometimes she already has the ingredients, then she comes up with the shape; other times she already has an image in her head, and she needs to find the right ingredient for that specific creation in mind.

“Last year before Christmas, I knew that I wanted to make the Grinch. I just needed to find the perfect green ingredient: kiwis. I just started arranging the slices and did not give up until it looked like it.”

https://www.instagram.com/p/BrQnD1pgrGH/

The most difficult thing for Anita is taking photos of the meals. It is not an easy thing to do when her daughter is demanding all of her attention during the day. She sometimes takes the photos overnight or tries to get her daughter involved to make the process more efficient.

The most instagrammed places in Budapest – PHOTOS

Instagram Budapest

If you search for images taken in Budapest, where were most of the photos taken? These five places are definitely among the most often occurring ones on the popular social media platform with #budapest. Locals and travellers alike love these sights which are always there for a perfect Instagram post.

When I would like to get a realistic image of a certain place, I usually look it up on Instagram, and I search for the location to see what other people posted when they were at that same spot; let that be a restaurant, a bar, a gym or even a whole city. I believe that one can get a far more realistic image of a place by looking at what other people posted about it online, rather than checking out the place’s Facebook page, website or any other “official” social media page.

[button link=”https://dailynewshungary.com/which-is-the-most-instagrammed-hungarian-food/” type=”big” color=”green” newwindow=”yes”] Which is the most instagrammed Hungarian food?[/button]

This is why I think it is very useful to check Instagram before travelling somewhere new. If you are planning to visit Budapest, or if you are staying here for a while, maybe studying, I hope this list comes in handy.

It was not easy to assemble this list. I was really hoping that the list would not contain only the most famous sights that everybody knows but offer something special as well. Of course, most places on this list are beloved tourist spots because the more people know about something, the more posts are created about it on social media.

[button link=”https://dailynewshungary.com/5-restaurants-to-visit-in-budapest-for-the-perfect-instagram-post-photos/” type=”big” color=”lightblue” newwindow=”yes”] 5 restaurants to visit in Budapest for the perfect Instagram post – PHOTOS[/button]

I am not familiar with the exact statistics, but I would say that Budapest is a popular city on Instagram. There are millions of photos out there that were taken here. People started creating special hashtags for it, to make it easier to search for posts that are only about Hungary’s ever so famous capital, such as the obvious #budapest which appears on over 11 million posts, but there is also #budapestgram (72,740 posts) or #instabudapest (71,705 posts). I was scrolling through these photos, as well as the ones whose location was Budapest and found that the following places appear most often on Instagram.

The Danube

The river Danube splits the two sides of the city: Buda and Pest. The river is also the reason why we have so many beautiful historic bridges. Since the banks of the river are very close to the heart of the city, the majority of people wandering around downtown go and check the peaceful river out. There are pubs along the river where people can hang out, or you can just sit down and watch the lights after sunset, or walk over a bridge and admire the view. There are over 1 million posts on Instagram with the #danube.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BupCbnAH_N4/

Chain Bridge

The Chain Bridge is said to be Budapest’s most beautiful bridge, which basically leads the way to one of the most famous hotels in town; the Four Seasons Hotel inside the Gresham Palace. The Chain Bridge is most beautiful at night when it is all lit up. Over 178,000 people shared their photos of it and used the #chainbridge.

Fisherman’s Bastion

It is no question why this sight is one of the most popular ones on Instagram. If you visit the Fisherman’s Bastion on the Buda side, you will get a chance to see the beautiful panorama of Budapest from above the city. You are able to see very far, and the bastion offers a few really cool spots for a perfect Instagram post. Over 85,000 photos were shared with the #fishermansbastion.

Széchenyi Thermal Bath

One of the things most people know about Budapest, even before coming here, is that it is a thermal bath capital. There are numerous well-known historic thermal baths in the city that locals as well as tourists love. The one that seems to appear most often on Instagram is definitely Széchenyi Thermal Bath located near the City Park and Heroes’ Square.

Random cool streets

This is my favourite on the list. There is an enormous amount of photos on Instagram of just random streets of Budapest; narrow or wide, crowded or empty, but they are always cool. These photos really capture the vibe of this energetic city, and what it is like to live here. There are amazing graffiti all over the city, romantic hidden spots, narrow Mediterranean streets, etc.

The most instagrammable parks in Budapest – PHOTOS

Margaret Island, Budapest

The weather is finally getting warmer, and we are desperate to get out of the four walls. Budapest has many beautiful parks, but the parks on this list are probably the ones you can see most often on Instagram because they are perfect locations for an excellent photo.

[button link=”https://dailynewshungary.com/51-ideal-picnic-locations-in-budapest-to-enjoy-nature/” type=”big” color=”green” newwindow=”yes”] 5+1 ideal locations to enjoy nature in Budapest[/button]

Margit-sziget/Margaret Island

Who does not love Margaret Island? It is a beloved piece of nature in the middle of Budapest which is a favourite spot of locals and tourists alike. It is a 2.5km-long island between Buda and Pest. The island is filled with promenades, flowers, fountains, and beautiful green grass everywhere. Not to mention that the famous fountain is also located here.

Városliget/Budapest City Park

The City Park is probably one of the most well-known tourist sights because it surrounds other famous historical sites like the Széchenyi Bath, Heroes’ Square or the Vajda Hunyad Castle. It is actually the second biggest public part in Budapest after … There is almost no limit to what you can do in this huge park: jog, walk your dog, do yoga with your friends, have a picnic, or have a nice refreshing fröccs at Kertem.

Kopaszi gát/Kopaszi dam

The recently renovated Kopaszi dam offers an ideal place for some relaxation. A vast green area where you can listen to the Danube’s waves and birds chirping while enjoying a delightful glass of Hungarian wine or lángos at one of the many restaurants and buffets along the shore.

Normafa

Normafa is the place to go if you are fed up with the noise and pollution of the capital, and all you need is some peace and quiet. You can walk in the forest, enjoy the view of Budapest from the lookout tower, or if it is winter time, get on a sleigh and have some fun!

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bt9ZO5gFgoV/

Római-part/Roman-Shore

The shore is near the Roman Bath, and it is easily accessed vie HÉV or BKK ships. The shore has a very relaxing atmosphere and a beautiful view of the Danube. The perfect place to just lean back in a striped deck chair and have a grasp on the ambience.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BuB953DgUIc/

Feneketlen-tó/Bottomless lake

CNN called Budapest’s Feneketlen lake an “unexpected oasis of calm in a bustling megapolis.”

This statement pretty much sums it all up. The park around the lake is green, relaxing, and it has a beautiful view of the St. Imre Church.

Budapest through the eyes of an American university student

central market hall budapest

Budapest is not only a tourist-favourite location, but you get to meet numerous international students studying for a semester or full-term at Hungarian universities. However, it is rare that you bump into an American student in Budapest.

applebaumJustin Applebaum is a 21-year-old business student from Indiana University, currently spending a semester at the Corvinus University of Budapest, but as he reveals, pursuing business is only a plan B, his dream is to become a photo reporter focusing on different cultures and regions of the world.

Justin, who has some Hungarian roots on his dad’s side, came to Hungary for several reasons, one of them being Hungarian history, especially the past century. As someone who has aspirations of becoming a photo reporter and a journalist, he wished to find out more about Communism and the impact it has left on Hungarian society and culture first-hand. He is also interested in the private person’s take on minority and migration-related issues, especially since the media tends to show only one side of a story.

soldier parliament budapest

It is often said that Hungarians have a pessimist attitude towards life, but this becomes very evident for people coming from western backgrounds. Justin finds it challenging to connect with Hungarians, as they seem reserved, and in some cases, this aloofness is heightened upon finding out that he is a foreigner. “Maybe it is because of the hardships of history” – he comments, trying to find an explanation. However, in his experience, Hungarians are actually nice and kind people, you just have to break the ice (which is much easier than it seems). His advice?

Try and say ‘jó napot’ or ‘szia’, then apologise for not speaking Hungarian – it is much more welcome than starting off with ‘sorry, only English'”

szent gellért tér budapest people urban

It is not just Hungary that he decided to explore, but other countries as well, which are often stereotyped or stigmatised as ‘dangerous’ in foreign media, like Jordan or Israel. But he has been to the Czech Republic and Slovenia as well.

Since the aim of his travels is to explore a given nation’s history and people, he includes captions on his website, providing his audience with a historical background.

1956 memorial budapest

He has an interesting approach to photography: he tries to present life itself as it happens with raw images. Even though his equipment is digital, similarly to film photography, he tries just to use different settings of lighting while taking photos, never editing his pictures.

central market hall
The Central Market Hall

Justin’s goal when it comes to photography is to broaden people’s perspectives with his work,

that is why he is mostly focusing on urban themes like capturing people as they are engaged with their everyday activities, historical landmarks, or just peculiar urban sightings, like an over-graffitied phone booth.

budapest people flowers urban

I have asked him how he likes the famous Art-Nouveau and Gothic architecture of Budapest, to which he said that he appreciates the architecture, but he prefers the colours of Ljubljana over the greys of Budapest. He is looking forward to spring, in the hopes that not only the trees will bloom, but people will cheer up too.

You can check out his portfolio and photos from his travels at his website.

Chez Dodo Macarons & Café

Chez Dodo is the embodiment of Dóra Szalai’s dream. Dóra fell in love with macarons a few years ago. She was dedicated to learning everything there is to know about this special dessert, and she aimed to make the best macarons in Budapest. She even attended an advanced class in Paris which showed her all the tips and tricks of the very complicated process. At first, she only baked them for her friends and colleagues. Her macarons were an instant success, and she finally partnered up with Peter Vary to open Chez Dodo in 2014. The shop is located close to Saint Stephen’s Basilica in the heart of the capital.

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bsu0jBOHjoz/

The macarons are made on the spot; an average of 20 different flavours can be found in the counter. They are made from high-quality ingredients “to guarantee a superior gourmet experience.” The flavours are very characteristic and range from fruity, lighter variations to more complex and unusual ones like Pierre (Piemonte hazelnut – truffle), Christian (dark chocolate – whiskey – bacon) and Georges (gorgonzola cheese – quince jelly).

Chez Dodo’s symbol is the hummingbird which reflects “the fragility and sophistication of the dessert, and can be found not only on one wall of the shop but also on gift boxes and bags”.

The Donut Library

Homer Simpson’s favourite dessert got a makeover. This Hungarian doughnut chain has a variety of colourful and creatively decorated doughnuts that are just as delicious as they look.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BgqeFcqHwQ0/

You can find the simplest of doughnuts like the glazed one, but unique ones can also be found on the shelves flavoured with pistachios, Bailey’s, or even peanut butter and jelly. You will not be able to resist buying a full box of these!

https://www.instagram.com/p/BcKOiBuHMaK/

Customers can also enjoy a variety of books in the shops, so you can keep yourself busy even if you come by alone to enjoy a sweet delight in the middle of the day.

The Sweet by Vintage Garden

The ultimate girly coffee place that truly has everything: it is pink, it is elegantly decorated, and it is full of amazing sweets and desserts. The place is very cosy, and it definitely has that vintage vibe that is in-style right now. There are pastries, cookies, cakes, macarons, and many more.

SUGAR!

Sugar! is a design confectionery founded in Budapest in 2008 by Eszter Horváth and Gergely Lábady. SUGAR! is sweet, young, cutting-edge, playful and yummy. The photos are amazing, but it is really a place to see. Just being there in the shop is an experience, and actually trying something out is beyond exciting. They have a wide variety of options: cakes, macarons, shakes, pancakes – literally anything that is sweet and irresistible. Luckily, you can visit SUGAR! at two different locations in Budapest: at 18 Paulay Ede Street and at 35 Petőfi Road (1st floor).

Gelarto Rosa

The rose-shaped ice cream has become an essential part of visiting Budapest. The unique dessert is something that every tourist wants to try, and we are not surprised by that.

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bt9eRhbA2I3/

Gelarto Rosa comes from the culinary vision and passion of Niki Szökrön, who is the founder, managing director and head chef of the place. She studied the ins-and-outs of traditional ice cream-making at Carpigiani Gelato University in Bologna. She spent one year at a small family-run artisanal ice cream business in Italy as an intern, where she was taught the secret of making ice cream roses.

The ice cream gets its unique rose-shaped form because they do not scoop it but use a special spatula instead to form an ice-cream rose onto the cone. High-quality organic ingredients are used, and their ice cream does not contain emulsifiers, hydrogenated vegetable fat or palm oil. They offer vegan, lactose intolerant, diabetic and diet-conscious options, too.

Not many tourists know about this place, even though it offers a really beautiful view of Budapest. It is further up on the hill, but it is definitely worth the trip.

A Hungarian photographer among the Sony World Photography Awards finalists – PHOTOS

szondy dalma

The Sony World Photography Awards is one of the most important photography events in the world, where over 300 thousand photographers entered. Among the bests of these is the work of a young Hungarian photographer, Dalma Szondy.

The World Photography Organisation has organised this year as well the prestigious Sony World Photography Awards, where a record number of photographers entered in four different categories: altogether 326 997 entrees were counted from 195 countries. The shortlisted images in the categories Open and Youth were published,

among the best ones is Mindennapi konstruktivizmus (Everyday Constructivism – ed. transl.) by Dalma Szondy in the Still Life subcategory.

szondy dalma photography
Mindennapi konstruktivizmus

Dalma revealed to Szeretlek Magyarország that she took the photo in the parking lot of a supermarket in Debrecen. She commented that as human beings we tend not to notice or not care about the numerous manifestations of beauty that surround us: ‘If we walk with an open eye, then we can notice how marvellous simple objects can actually be.’

Photography is something new and old at the same time for Dalma, who had a keen eye for her surroundings and with the help of a camera and the support from her family, she was already clicking as a schoolgirl.

Today, Dalma is a Psychology major at Pázmány Péter Catholic University, but because of the tremendous amount of courses focusing on theory, she felt like she needed something creative in her life, that is why she returned to photography.

dalma szondy

She recalls the beginning of this passion: ‘I started following more and more photographers on Instagram and Youtube, and besides, I attended exhibitions and gallery openings more frequently than before. Finally, a year ago, I have decided to enrol in a photography course, where I learnt a lot about technicalities, but also had a chance to try my hand in different areas of photography. This is where I began to see what really interests me.

‘I look for structures, colours, lines. I like photographing people with their surroundings, where they complement each other, creating harmony. ‘

Hungary’s spectacular and only stone pyramid – Photos & Video

pyramid, stone, sight, Hungary, rare

Pyramids are truly spectacular and miraculous buildings that can be observed best in Egypt. But if you would like to see these wonders you do not necessarily have to get on a plane and travel to another continent. All you need to do is get in your car and drive to Iszkaszentgyörgy (Fejér County) where Hungary’s only stone pyramid is located.

Sokszínűvidék collected all the important details and historical facts you need to know about this rare Hungarian sight.

On the outskirts of the Hungarian town called Iskaszentgyörgy, in a quiet and peaceful environment, we have to take a short walk up on the Piramita-mountain where we can find Count Siegfried Pappenheim’s (Austrian nobleman) 10 meters high pyramid.

According to the legend, the pyramid commemorates one of the count’s closest friends who fell in love with a maid. Their love affair was disapproved by the family and because of that the man took his life with his own hands. The pyramid was built on the location where he committed suicide.

The original pyramid stood there until 1960 but, because of its poor condition, it had to be renovated. From 2014 the replica of the original pyramid can be seen. Not only the pyramid but the view from the top of the mountain is also breathtaking.

If you are taking a walk in Iszkaszentgyörgy to observe the pyramid, do not miss the unique Amade-Bajzáth-Pappenheim Castle nearby. Built in 1735, this is Fejér County’s most extraordinary building which was the favourite place of the Pappenheim family for years. The family owned the castle until World War II when it was rebuilt into a hospital. It also served as a hotel and holiday home during the past years.

The renovation of the castle started in 1985. Currently the Finnish knight Ari Santeri Kuspus rents the castle but some parts of it is used by the local school.

The icy glory of Lake Balaton – PHOTOS

It seems that the cold winter has settled in and it is making itself comfortable, and although there has not been any snow for days, in some parts of Hungary, thanks to the very low temperatures, lakes are freezing over. At least the harsh and icy winter is entertaining us in February: last year, the freezing cold made its debut in early March.

Szeretlek Magyarország reports that although Lake Balaton has frozen over, the ice is too thin just yet to be safe for skating, and it is highly unlikely that the ice will become thick enough in the following few days.

There is beauty in the extreme cold, undeniably, so let us see what winter did to Lake Balaton.

The secret and success of the future House of Hungarian Music – Photos & Videos

ouse of Hungarian Music, music, City Park, architecture

Without a doubt, music is a cultural field which is the most successful one in Hungary and which gave exemplary musicians and singers to the whole world. But unfortunately, Hungary does not have a complex institution where people could learn about the history of Hungarian music and to get closer to our music culture.

Luckily, part of the Liget Budapest Project is the building of a brand-new institution which brings people together with music. Liget Budapest described every amazing detail about the future House of Hungarian Music.

We might ask ourselves the question: why does Hungary need another concert hall if we already have the Opera, Erkel Theatre and the Palace of Arts? András Batta, who is a Hungarian music historian, emphasised that this new building is not going to be another concert hall. It is going to be an institution which convinces people to go to concert halls and listen to classical and other music concerts in Hungary.

Before establishing the plans of House of Hungarian Music, musical experts examined another concert hall to get inspiration and ideas, like the concert hall in Vienna, Paris, and Barcelona, which are not only concert halls but museums as well.

The House of Hungarian Music will not be a museum. This institution’s main task will be to provide comprehensive information about music, musical genres, instruments and musicians while coping with the hardships and modernisation of the 21st century. It is also important that this house will not only be opened for people who have musical experiences but for everyone in the country and in the world.

Another aim of this project is to provide new information for visitors in a playful way and not in a way as the ordinary museums do. This institution will combine music and experience, providing a fun way to learn about music.

The House of Hungarian Music – besides learning about music – will provide lots of colourful programmes for adults, children, school groups and elderly people. The project would like to establish a connection between every generation and music because they believe that the contemporary music halls and museums are unable to do that. That is why this new house is going to be built in the heart of the Budapest City Park.

Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto, who established and created the plans for the House of Hungarian Music, believes that harmony plays an important part in building. Fujimoto created a building which is close to nature and creates a bridge between artificial and non-artificial environments.

The exhibition in the House of Hungarian Music will provide an insight into the history of music through the past centuries until nowadays in an exciting and fascinating way.

Besides the history of Hungarian music and musicians like Zoltán Kodály or Béla Bartók, visitors will also get an insight into the history of music in Venice, Paris, Berlin and London and internationally famous composers like Mozart and Beethoven. There will also be different kinds of games, workshops, screenings and other programmes. The options are truly endless.

Apart from classical music, the institution will focus on popular music as well and show people how the birth of the radio and popular music played a part in history through the life of true music icons like Elvis Presley, the Beatles, Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin.

Among the exhibitions and programmes, the institution will also welcome famous musicians and singers who will give concerts for visitors arriving in the City Park’s new establishment.

Spanish opera singer Placido Domingo expressed his enthusiasm and good wishes in a video:

The story of Hollywood’s most successful Hungarian photographer – Photo Gallery

marilyn monroe, photo, beach, actress

The Golden Age of Hollywood started somewhere in the 1920s and lasted till the 1960s. In 40 years many iconic movies were made, and actors and actresses who had nothing became stars and icons of the industry. Like nowadays, photographing these celebrities was fashionable back in the day. Many excellent photographers were hired to take stills and portraits of these people. One of them is the third most successful glamour photographer in Hollywood of all time.

Laszlo Joseph Willinger was born in Budapest on the 6th of April 1908 and photography was in his veins. His father and mother – Vilmos Willinger and Margaret Willinger – were also famous photographers and had their own photo studio. Her mother also taught photography in Berlin. The young Laszlo could not even walk when he fell in love with photography. From a very young age, he started to learn every skill from his parents and decided to follow their way when he becomes an adult.

He was sixteen years old when his parents opened their new studio in Berlin, called Willinger Studio. After finishing his photography studies with success in Berlin in 1929, Laszlo did not hesitate and opened his first own photo studio in Paris and later in 1931 in Berlin.

Along with directing his own studio he also worked for several photo agencies and magazines like the Berliner Illustriete, Hamburger Illustriete, Munchener Illustriete Zeitung and the London Daily Express.

In 1933, Adolf Hitler became the leader of Nazi Germany. Laszlo and his family had Jewish roots, and they did not have a choice but to leave Germany. They settled down in Vienna, where he opened another photo studio to make ends meet.

This time he photographed celebrities like Marlene Dietrich, Hedy Lamarr, Sigmund Freud, and Carl Gustav Jung.

In 1937, he was discovered by an American photographer and travelled to America where he met the director of the Metro-Goldwyn Mayer studio. The director asked Willinger to take photographs of the Austrian-born actress Hedy Lamarr, to make her more popular. His pictures were so magnificent that not only Lamarr but also Willinger became a star in America.

He opened his photo studio in Hollywood and started his career as a professional photographer for the Metro-Goldwyn Mayer studio. Unlike the other American photographers, he made colored pictures and special portraits of actors and actresses as well. He was hard-working, precise, professional and did not calm down until he found the perfect place, lights, clothes, and position for his photographs. He was also one of the first photographers who used special effects and retouching techniques in the photographs.

His hard work was rewarding, as he became the most successful glamour photographer in America. He photographed legendary Hollywood actors and actresses like Marilyn Monroe, Vivien Leigh, Ingrid Bergman, Cary Grant, Clark Gable, Joan Crawford and many more.

See some amazing photographs by Laszlo Willinger in the gallery!

He became a frequent contributor to MGM, magazines, and periodicals. He died of heart failure on the 8th of August 1989 in Los Angeles, California. Although not much is known about his life, his amazing and beautiful photographs of evergreen actors and actresses remain forever.

David Lynch in Hungary – Budapest Photo Festival 2019 opening exhibition at Műcsarnok

© David Lynch SmallStories HEAD #2

The BUDAPEST PHOTO FESTIVAL is the biggest photography event in Hungary. In its’ third year in 2019, it opens with a real gem on the 28th of February in MŰCSARNOK, Budapest: with the living legend of American independent movie making, the great director, screenwriter, painter and musician, the one and only David Lynch.

The Budapest Photo Festival is an annual city-wide exhibition series what represents the contemporary and classical values of the photography by the presence of the Hungarian and international art scene. The aim of the Festival is to create Budapest to be the „City of Photography”.

Budapest Photo Festival: 28.02. – 20.04.

The opening event, David Lynch: Small Stories, is a photography exhibition that has its’ Central European Premiere here in Hungary.

The atmosphere of this unique collection is created by the glow of invisible coherences, the surfacing of hidden feelings and the blossoming of unleashed fantasy. Surrealism, esotery and the American way or visualizing anxiety and violence in an artistic and pop manner – from the legendary Norman Rockwell to contemporary thrillers – had a huge influence on both this series and Mr. Lynch’s overall work. It’s a journey beyond the reality.

The basis for Lynch’s surreal images is the reinterpretation of photomontages, portraits and reproductions.

These create such a time-space dimension, that give birth to a universe we are all familiar with from the master’s movies. The Small Stories collection is a psychedelic journey beyond reality into the world of emotions, humor, playfulness and restlessness, shedding light also on memories and wounds. Just as in his movies, dreams dominate in this series. The intertwinement of subconscious and reality provides the underlying power of its’ poetics.

The series was completed for the Paris photo month, the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in 2014, and was only exhibited three times to date.

Kurator: Klára Szarka

During the time of the exhibition, there will be a number of exclusive programs and guided tours by well-known experts, all organized by Műcsarnok.

Location:

MŰCSARNOK – 1146 Budapest, Dózsa György út 37.
