April this year was 2 C. cooler than normal, the national meteorological centre said on Facebook on Monday.
Last April was also especially cool, and this year was hardly any warmer. Temperatures in Hungary averaged 9.4 C, which is 2 C. below the 1991-2020 average, the centre said.
The last time consecutive Aprils were below 10 C was in 1981-82.
Morning frosts were typical and there was even snow in several areas in central Hungary, while April was somewhat wetter than usual.
Showers and thunderstorms are likely in the first week of May, though it will be warmer, with temperatures in some areas above 25 C, the meteorological centre said.
Two Hungarian students won one of the world’s most prestigious debate competitions in Oxford. They broke a record! What is more, the pair beat all participants for two years in a row.
Oxford Schools
Never before has the same team won one of the biggest and most prestigious debate competitions, the Oxford Schools, two years in a row. As eduline.hu reported, this year, two Hungarian high school students broke the record: Julianna Balázs and Lili Törőcsik beat hundreds of teams to win the world competition.
The Oxford Union is the organiser of one of the world’s largest and most prestigious debate competitions specifically for secondary school students, the Oxford Schools. The finals of the competition usually involve between one hundred and one hundred and twenty teams.
The competitor teams debate in English on topics including politics, international affairs, and law, among others.
Julianna Balázs and Lili Törőcsik entered the Oxford Schools as students of the Milestone Institute. Julianna is a student of Karinthy Frigyes High School, while Lili goes to the Fazekas Mihály High School, both in Budapest.
Breaking a record
This time, they won in the “ESL”, English as a Second Language, category. It was not their first year: last year, they came first in the “newcomer” category.
This means that they have already won first place in two of the three Oxford Schools categories.
This is unprecedented: never before in the history of the competition has the same team beaten the other competing teams in two different categories in two consecutive years.
Last year, Index.hu reported the following about the two girls’ victory:
“The defeated teams included the team of one of the oldest private schools in the UK, Harrow School. The success of the two Hungarian tenth-graders is made even greater by the fact that in Hungary, there are few educational institutions that have a debate club, unlike many European and Asian countries where it is practised as a school sport.”
Altogether 4 Hungarian teams took part in this year’s competition. The Milestone team was joined in Oxford by the American International School of Budapest (AISB) and two teams from Engame Academy.
As Hungarian news portal Turizmus reports, preparatory works have already started with the landscaping. The construction of the world’s longest suspension bridge will be realised within the framework of the Tokaj-Zemplén Development Programme.
The pedestrian bridge will be 700 metres long, which is unique in its category.
The suspension bridge will be located in an important tourist location in the region, between Várhegy and Szárhegy, at a height of 80 metres. It will offer a breathtaking view of the Zemplén Mountains and the Highlands and will later become part of the Zemplén Adventure Park. Therefore, it is not surprising that the National Unity Bridge will have some adventurous characteristics as well. The central part of the structure is planned to have a glass surface to enhance the experience.
Presumably,
the suspension bridge will become an important attraction for the Tokaj-Zemplén region and for Hungary.
The investment worth EUR 11.2 million (~HUF 4 billion) is part of the Tokaj-Zemplén Development Programme adopted by the Government. The purpose of the development project is to increase the region’s attractiveness to tourists, ensure sustainable development, and strengthen the region’s population retention.
The construction works are planned to be completed in 2023.
We have just written a snippet about the weather going crazy on New Year’s Eve and breaking century-old records around the country, especially in western Hungary, but it seems that the weather continues to surprise us and the record-breaking continues in 2022 as well.
Időkép, a weather forecasting website wrote that the previous record set in 1921 in Budapest, the Hungarian capital have been already broken before noon on January 1st, 2022.
It is almost as if spring had arrived to Hungary a few months early. Even though Hungary had a mild winter in 2021, and white Christmas only came to a few places, it is still shocking that meteorological stations have recorded over 17 °C on New Year’s Day in the country.
The Hungarian Meteorological Service have posted on their Facebook page that the previous all-time high on January 1st was broken by over 2 °C.
Previously, the all-time high was held by Sopron with 15.3 °C recorded in 1921, while the current highest was recorded in Főnyed with 17.5 °C.
Budapest’s record was also broken. In 1921, they recorded 13 °C on the top of Gellért Hill. Yesterday, the temperature was 14.4 °C at Lágymányos, but Ferihegy (in the area of Budapest Airport) and Újpest was only lagging behind by 0.2 °C.
The Hungarian Meteorological Service also highlighted, that 50 of their weather stations have recorded higher temperatures than a 101 years ago.
A few days ago, the former governor of California was seen by a passer-by on the terrace of Gresham Palace at Széchenyi Square, Budapest. Besides enjoying his time in Budapest, the world-famous superstar could also congratulate a 10 years old Hungarian girl after she set a new world record.
10 years old Dotti Sinka-Korsós seems like any child of her age, but what she achieved at her young age is anything but ordinary. Her father was the only person who pulled a 92-tonne plane with his teeth, and he also set 50 world records. Now he must be very proud of Dotti, who followed his footstep and set a world record herself by pulling a 2,700 kilograms heavy car with her teeth. –wrote Daily News Hungary.
The Terminator congratulated the girl in a message, and now he also met Dotti in person on his visit to Budapest.
Her father wakened up the little girl on Sunday morning, and she went to the gym as usual. There she saw Arnold Schwarzenegger, who asked her to go closer. The actor has been following Dotti’s and her father’s sports activities for a long time, and rumour has it that the 2,700 kilos car she pulled actually belonged to the famous actor. “I was stunned, but now I say waking up early was worth it.”- said Dotti.- wrote Bors.
The girl said that Schwarzenegger was very kind, gave her lots of compliments, and said he was proud of Dotti.
“He treated me as kindly as if I were his granddaughter. And people say he’s not an overly direct person, and he only lets few people close. He also complimented my English.” – said Dotti. She added that she talked to him about everything, and the actor even invited her and her father to the Arnold Classic and his home. Dotti told Schwarzenegger that she likes his donkeys, and he said he would introduce them to the little girl.”
Dotti’s father said that he was planning to pull a tank, and maybe he will do this at Arnold Schwarzenegger’s place. The Terminator loves everything related to the military, and he has a farm where tanks are kept.
Hungary is famous for many things, such as its rich history, delicious cuisine, amazing architecture, thermal baths, the beautiful city of Budapest, and many other things. But Hungarians have more things to be proud of, like the number of Guinness records Hungarians have set. Below you can read a selection of the most unusual ones.
The Largest Menu
On 24 April 2006, András Halasi set a record with the largest restaurant menu. Mófarguru in Budapest prides itself on a splendid menu of a total of 192 pages listing 1,810 items. In addition to Hungarian, it was available in English, German, Italian, French, and Spanish. Unfortunately, it seems that the restaurant has since closed.
Pianist with the world’s fastest hands
Balázs Havasi set this record in 2009 at the Hungarian Music Academy in front of an audience. He hit the same key 498 times in just 60 seconds.
The biggest book on Earth – Exhibited in Aggtelek
Béla Varga and his son, Gábor, made a giant book, which got the title of the world’s biggest book back in 2009. The book looks like a codex, and its title is Our Fragile Nature Heritage. It presents the wildlife and natural value of the Zemplén Mountains, with illustrations. The book has 346 pages, weighs 1,420 kg, has a height of 4.18 metres and a width of 3.77 metres.
The largest collection of number plates (licence plates)
Péter Kenyeres and Tamás Kenyeres began to collect licence plates in the 1990s. In 2011, their work turned into a great achievement when their name made it to the Guinness World Records. Their collection consists of 11,345 different number plates from a total of 133 countries.
In 2009, in Paris, 2,515 pairs were slow dancing at the same time in the wonderful city of Paris. In 2012, even more people gathered to slow dance in Budapest, breaking the French record.
The world’s largest postcard
The world’s largest postcard was painted by patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in eight cities of Hungary. The postcard is truly impressive with its 86.4 square metres. The giant postcard was presented in Millenáris Park on October 12 back in 2013, on the World Arthritis Day, organised by the Association of Hungarian Rheumatic Patients.
The world’s tallest LEGO tower
In 2014, a 34.76-metre-tall tower was built of 450,000 pieces in front of St. Stephen Basilica in Budapest. According to the rules, no type of glue could be used, and the tower was torn down the day after setting the record. The record was later broken by Denmark and Germany as well.
Most flips of a bottle on the back of one’s hand in one minute
György Kovács was only 23 years old when he set the record in 2017. At the time, he worked at an American restaurant chain in Liverpool, which helped him organise the record attempt. He flipped a bottle 146 times in one minute, using only the back of his hand.
Hungary’s biggest apple
Zoltán Szabó works in agriculture and has an impressive apple tree cultivation. He has Red Jonaprince apples, which grow to a bigger size than other apple types, but one morning, his employee found an apple that was suspected to set a record. And so it happened that the record-sized apple weighed 900 grams, almost 1 kg.
More than 1,000 plush pandas
Dr Dóra Rákóczi has been collecting items depicting pandas for 31 years. In March 2021, she showcased Hungary’s largest plush panda collection. Over 1,000 plush pandas are stored in her home in plastic bags. But even more items, images, magnets, pens, and other things resembling or depicting pandas can be found in her enormous collection, amounting to another 2,500 items.
10-year-old Dotti Sinka-Korsós is no ordinary kid. The Hungarian girl lives in Dubai with her family. Her father, Zsolt Sinka, has set 50 world records. He was the only person who pulled a 92-tonne plane with his teeth. Their example truly illustrates that the apple does not fall far from the tree.
Tények made a report with a Hungarian girl who trained hard to achieve her goal of setting a new record. Her father oversees her training. The child is under medical supervision, doctors who specialise in sports medicine and dentists check her condition in order to make sure the training does not take a toll on her health.
As Daily News Hungary wrote in another article, Dotti started taking part in her father’s field of sports at the age of two.
The family chose to live in the United Arab Emirates because this sport and similar fields of fitness are highly supported in the country. The 10-year-old kid and her family travelled back to Hungary specifically to set the new record. It was definitely a good choice and a trip made worthwhile!
Dotti recently set a Hungarian and a world record by pulling a 2,700-kilo car with her teeth. Her current weight is only 40 kilos. World-famous superstar Arnold Schwarzenegger also noticed Dotti’s achievements, as his Hungarian friend always transports his with cars that were towed by the Hungarian girl.
Before taking up a demanding sport, it is important to rule out genetic problems and to have medical checkups with a sports doctor.
A teaching assistant at Semmelweis University told Tények that weightlift training is not advised before puberty. She thinks that children can properly prepare for strength tests, but it is necessary that the training is based on working with their own weight and doing cardio. As far as she is concerned, Dotti’s training is appropriate for her age. However, she does not recommend this type of effort or pulling cars.
Ten-year-old Dotti traveled home to Hungary with his family to set a new, quite unusual world record.
Dotti’s father, Zsolt Sinka is one of the strongest people in the world, he prepares his daughter for rehearsals and competitions. The family has been living in the United Arab Emirates for years because they not only love it there but this sport and similar fitness sports are also highly supported, based on TV2’s Tények Plus (as reported by Origo).
The girl started taking part in her father’s sport at the age of two, she has accompanied and participated in tests since then, causing a lot of surprises.
Zsolt Sinka, the girl’s father said that they are preparing for Hungarian and world records, it is certain that his daughter will be the youngest competitor who is able to perform such wonders:
the girl will atempt to pull a 5 ton car with her teeth.
He also talked about being known in the Emirates and the United States, but less so at home, which he has yet to process. His record is currently towing a 95-ton fire truck, but he’s also trying to break that by pulling a Boeing 270-ton machine.
On Wednesday, the average price of petrol per litre in Hungary will increase by HUF 2, by which it is expected to reach a new record after last week’s historical peak. Besides crazy fuel prices, a crazy trend has also started on the Hungarian roads that can even cost human lives. Experts draw attention to the importance of driving in a responsible way.
After last Friday’s significant increase in the average price of petrol per litre (↑ 5 HUF) and diesel per litre (↑ 6 HUF), a new increase in fuel prices can be expected this week as well. According to the Hungarian news portal Portfolio,
the average price of 95 petrol per litre will increase by HUF 2, reaching the historical peak of HUF 456/litre.
The average price of diesel per litre remains unchanged at HUF 449 that is also very close to the historical peak of HUF 450.1 registered in 2012.
Domestic fuel prices are affected by several factors, including the world market price of crude oil, refinery margins, taxes and the exchange rate of the forint against the dollar. As Portfolio reports, several important changes have taken place in recent weeks. After lengthy negotiations, the oil powers have agreed that since August, production volumes can increase by 400,000 barrels a day every month, and the existing 5.8 million barrels constraint will terminate gradually until September 2022. Due to the spread of the delta virus variant spread, market participants were also concerned that coronavirus epidemic-related infection rates were on the rise again in several countries. This has led investors to take more defensive positions instead of riskier assets, which has also pushed oil prices down.
In addition to crazy fuel prices, a crazy trend has also started on the Hungarian roads that can even cost human lives.
Even though driving in slippers is strictly forbidden, many Hungarians decide to do so, risking their own lives and the lives of others.
Just like in the case of the Hungarian man who drove towards Konyár and suffered a severe accident with his family. As the Hungarian news portal Pénzcentrum reports, the accident happened at a road bend that led left and then to the right at a railway crossing, but the man’s slippers got stuck between the pedals, so he could not slow down enough. The car hewed down a railway light barrier and turned upside down with his wife and two children in the vehicle. All the family members were tied up; thanks to this, the accident ended with no serious injuries. After the incident, the man confessed the crime, and the prosecution requested a financial penalty against the man for negligent misconduct.
Even though the accident ended fortunately, probably several other drivers act similarly: after bathing, swimming, they just jump into the car without changing their slippers to shoes or simply do not want to pull on shoes to drive in the high heat. Although both are strictly forbidden and dangerous as the pedals are less controllable in slippers or barefoot, and the driver cannot react as quickly to potential emergencies as generally. According to studies, the most optimal is to wear sports shoes for driving, as they are comfortable and do not slip off the pedals. Experts suggest that even if you are not constantly in that kind of footwear, it is worth picking it up when you are driving.
Defending World Champion Kristóf Milák won the final of the 200-meter butterfly at the Tokyo Olympics on Wednesday morning (Hungarian time), thus winning a historic gold medal. The other Hungarian finalist, Tamás Kenderesi, finished in fourth place.
M4 Sport writes that this is the first Olympic gold medal of the 21-year-old swimming classic.
Interestingly, he is now the European Champion, World Champion, world record holder and now also Olympic champion of the track.
The swimmer took the lead in the first 50 metres, even though his South African rival Chad le Clos, London’s champion, started quite strong. Although Milák fell to third place at 100 metres, he gained a confident advantage by the second hundred as his rivals became tired.
The only question in the finish was Milák’s time and whether he would set a new World Record. Finally, with 1:51.25 minutes, the third-best result of all time, he overthrew the legendary Michael Phelps’ Beijing 2008 Olympic record.
“I fell so apart because of the swimsuit case (his trunk broke in the call room, so he had to change very quickly) that I told myself, let’s just swim this.”
Europe experienced its hottest year on record last year, while the Arctic suffered a summer of extreme wildfires partly due to low snow cover as climate change impacts intensified, the European Union’s observation service said on Thursday.
As world leaders prepared to brandish their plans to fight climate change at a U.S.-led summit on Thursday, EU scientists issued a stark reminder that the impacts of a warmer world are already here.
Europe’s average annual temperature in 2020 was the highest on record and at least 0.4 degrees Celsius above the next five warmest years — all of which took place in the last decade, the Copernicus Earth observation service said.
“Temperatures are increasing in all seasons in Europe,” said Freja Vamborg, senior scientist at Copernicus.
It was the hottest winter on record, at 3.4 degrees Celsius above the average European winter temperature seen during 1981-2020. Weather is more variable in winter, so extreme temperatures tend to play out most starkly in that season.
It was also Europe’s warmest autumn, while summer heatwaves were not as intense or prolonged as in recent years, despite pockets of record-breaking heat in places including Scandinavia and France.
Meanwhile, the Arctic saw a “spectacular year”, Vamborg said, pointing to a summer of record-breaking wildfires in Arctic Siberia, which were exacerbated by high temperatures and lower-than-average snow cover.
The average temperature in Arctic Siberia last year broke records by a large margin at 4.3 degrees Celsius above the 1981-2020 average.
Globally, Copernicus Earth said 2020 was one of the world’s three hottest years on record, confirming findings released this week by the World Meteorological Organization.
The EU on Wednesday set a target to slash emissions faster this decade, and the United States is expected to do the same on Thursday, hiking the pressure on countries including China and India. [mL1N2M81NI]
Currently, countries’ combined pledges fall far short of the rapid emissions cuts scientists say are needed to limit warming to 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels and stave off the most severe impacts of climate change.
This March, the number of apartment purchases has set a record when considering the last 10 years. The increasing tendency of property purchase in Hungary can be explained by several reasons, including the biggest home creation scheme launched in 2021. Furthermore, we can also get an insight into how buyer preferences have changed as a result of the pandemic.
Based on the data of the real estate agency Duna House, this March, 15,630 flats were purchased in Hungary, which is a record number considering the last 10 years. This is 40% more than the number of sales registered in the same period last year, and even 7% higher than in February when there was already a record-high number of apartment purchases in the Hungarian real estate market.
The record number can be explained by several reasons, one of the most important of which is the new housing subsidies introduced in 2021. In addition to the ‘CSOK’ family housing allowance and subsidised ‘baby loans’ that can still be applied for, VAT on new homes has been reduced again from 27% to 5%. Furthermore, applicants for the ‘CSOK’ family housing allowance can also claim back a 5% VAT on newly-built homes. The property transfer tax – by default, 4% of the purchase price – does not have to be paid by home buyers using the family housing allowance.
In addition to the new housing subsidies, home loans are still very cheap, which can be the other reason why several Hungarians have decided to buy an apartment now.
Presumably, the bank interest costs will rise significantly soon, which could make housing loans more expensive in the upcoming months. Accordingly, many Hungarians were more likely to bring forward their planned purchase by a few months.
As Hungarian news portal Bankmonitor reports, the pandemic has also had an impact on customer habits.
As a result of the long period spent in confinement, the environment and the size of the apartment have become more important than the location.
There has been an increase in interest in larger properties with gardens. The increased number of sales contracts may also indicate that families living in smaller apartments in the city centre intend to exchange their homes for a more spacious apartment with a garden that can meet their new needs.
Hungary’s temperature rose to a record high on February 26. The mercury hit 22.4°C in Kiskunfélegyháza, southern Hungary, on Friday, the national weather service said on its Facebook page.
The previous record of 20.7 was measured in Baja-Csávoly in southern Hungary in 2008.
A record 20 degrees were measured in Budapest’s fourth district, replacing the Budapest record of 18.9 degrees registered in the 11th district, the weather service said.
The temperatures are equivalent to average end-of-May temperatures, OMSZ said.
A record hot 16 degrees were recorded on Friday in Főnyed, southwest Hungary, the Hungarian Meteorological Service (OMSZ) has said.
The highest temperature ever recorded in Hungary on January 22, before today, had been 15.5 degrees Celsius measured in Ásotthalom, southern Hungary, in 1956, OMSZ said.
Although the sky over most of the country wass very cloudy and the weather was rainy in several places, the sunshine helped to break the previous record.
UPDATE: The town of Sellye in Baranya County seems to have the “race” by 16.6 degrees – in all likelihood this value will be verified later.
UPDATE2:
New Hungarian maximum: 16.5 ° C (Nagyatád) New Hungarian minimum: 10.1 ° C (Pér Airport)
Although 2020 was a roller coaster ride, there were some interesting records in the housing market. Last year, the cheapest house was sold for HUF 300 thousand (~EUR 832), and the most expensive flat was sold at Lake Balaton for HUF 74 million (~EUR 205,425). Some people sold their property in less than a day, and the number of advertised apartments for rent rose to a record high of 115,000.
Needless to say, 2020 was an unusual year, with the coronavirus epidemic completely transforming everyday life, different areas of the economy, including the real estate market.
Rental records
24.hu presents the survey of ingatlan.com, according to which a total of more than 540,000 ads were posted last year. Regarding apartments for sale, 430 thousand new advertisements appeared, thus the rental market reached a peak. Due to the lack of foreign tourists, owners were mostly looking for tenants for short-term rent. As a result, more than 115,000 new offers appeared on the portal last year, which is a record.
Sales in express mode
Generally speaking, it took longer than before to sell an apartment or house, yet the fastest sales took place within a day. In Budapest’s XXIII. district an owner announced a 200-square-meter family house for HUF 38.9 million (~EUR 107,986) last May, and sold the property in less than a day. Outside the capital, a family house in Hajdúböszörmény was sold the fastest. The owner asked HUF 37 million (~EUR 102,712) for the 110 square meter, 3-room house.
It was such a great price that potential buyers were coming every 30 minutes to check it out the next day.
The most expensive flat
The most expensive property in the country is a palace on Andrássy Avenue, a 2,000-square-meter luxurious apartment on a plot of more than 1,000 square meters. The real estate agent representing the owner announced it for nearly HUF 6 billion (~EUR 16,6m) last year. The apartment hasn’t been sold yet.
Suprisingly, the most expensive flat was not sold in the capital, but on the shore of Lake Balaton.
A 79-square-meter apartment found on the third floor of a renovated waterfront panel building was advertised and sold for HUF 74 million (~EUR 205,425). The extremely high price in the market is explained by the fact that the apartment has a 40 square meter terrace and direct entrance to the beach.
The cheapest offers
Among the cheapest real estates, the record belongs to a ruined adobe house located in Négyes in Borsod County. The owner launched a 60-square-meter, one-and-a-half-room property at a distance of 8 kilometers from the Tisza at a price of HUF 300,000 (~EUR 832).
The cheapest apartment of 2020 cost HUF 600 thousand (~EUR 1,666). It is located in Salgótarján and is still for sale. The 48-square-meter, completely empty property even lacks radiators.
Fully 81 patients, mostly elderly patients with an underlying illness, have died over the past 24 hours, while 4,673 new coronavirus infections have been registered, bringing the total number of infections since the outbreak in the spring to 109,616, koronavirus.gov.hu said on Sunday.

Fully 34,287 people are in official home quarantine, while the number of tests carried out stands at 1,209,151.
The government has restored the “special legal order”, allowing it to take fast action. Prime Minister Viktor Orban, in a video on Facebook, called on lawmakers to reintroduce the special legal order for 90 days and announced a curfew between midnight and 5am. Nightclubs have been ordered to close.
Also, parking will be made free of charge once again with a view to reducing crowds on public transport, he said.
The prime minister said sporting events, cinemas and theatres will have to restrict audiences to using every third seat, and face masks must be worn. The authorities will inspect all events and fine transgressors. Venues that fail to observe the rules will be shut down immediately, he added.
So far most people have been registered in Budapest (27,692) and Pest County (14,197), followed by the counties of Gyor-Moson-Sopron (7,429), Borsod-Abauj-Zemplen (6,460), Szabolcs-Szatmar-Bereg (5,727) and Hajdu-Bihar (5,526). Tolna County has the fewest infections (1,347).
Twenty-nine Covid-19 patients have died in the past 24 hours, while the number of registered coronavirus infections in Hungary has risen by 950 to 41,732, koronavirus.gov.hu said on Thursday.
The number of fatalities stands at 1,052, and 12,628 people have made a recovery.
There are 28,052 active infections and 1,555 Covid-19 patients are being treated in hospital, 167 on ventilators.
Altogether 24,710 people are in official home quarantine and 861,620 tests have been carried out.
The website warned Hungarians to observe social distancing guidelines and hygiene regulations. It asked elderly people to pay increased attention to protecting themselves and observe general regulations.
Entry restrictions for travellers from abroad remain in force.
In addition to shops and public transport, wearing a mask is now mandatory in cinemas, theatres, health and social institutions and public offices, and clubs have to close by 11pm to curb the spread of the virus.
Regulations include a ban on visiting hospitals and elderly care homes which have to take every possible measure to prevent infections, the site said.
The operative body responsible for handling the epidemic response has ordered 9 schools and 188 classes to revert to digital education. Fully 48 kindergartens and 24 schools have gone on emergency breaks, the website said.
Most infections have been registered in Budapest (13,525), followed by Pest County (5,298) and the counties of Gyor-Moson-Sopron (2,557), Borsod-Abauj-Zemplen (2,268), Hajdu-Bihar(1,948) and Szabolcs-Szatmar-Bereg (1,943). Tolna County has the fewest infections (390).
Besides football fans, our entire nation is deservedly proud of Ferenc Puskás, also known as one of the greatest football players of all time. Accordingly, in 2016, the captain of the Golden Team was voted the best footballer ever in the “World Cup of Legends” vote on goal.com. His legendary achievements are proved not only by the title of Athlete of the Nation, Olympic gold and World Championship silver medals, but also by his set records, which no one has broken since then! Come along and check out some of the most impressive records set by the legendary Ferenc Puskás.
Match of the Century – 1953: Hungary-England: 6-3
The Golden Team (“Aranycsapat”) also known as the team of the “Magnificent or Magical Magyars” refers to the well-known name of the best Hungarian football team of all time.
Besides several notable matches, the most outstanding achievement of the Golden Team is also called as the Match of the Century, that was realised in 1953 at the Wembley Stadium in London where the Magical Hungarians defeated England – unbeaten for 90 years – for 6-3.
Besides its exceptional footballers, the captain of the Golden Team, Ferenc Puskás, became an emblematic figure and still one of the best-known Hungarian football players in the world.
Most goals in a Hungarian championship
Ferenc Puskás was a huge player; it is not surprising that his incredible talent and willingness made him one of the best players who scored the most goals in a single Hungarian league match so far: as a player of the Honvéd against Győr in 1949. The final result was 11-3, out of which Puskás scored seven goals, and since then no one has scored more than this in a single Hungarian league match.
Most goals in a European Cup final
As the Hungarian news portal Magyarorszagom reports, if we were to stop someone on the street and ask: “which football player scored the most goals in a European Cup final?” – one would probably say Ronaldo or Messi. However, the correct answer is the Hungarian legend, Puskás. While Messi scored one goal in the European Cup final, and Ronaldo’s record is a double goal at the Champions League finals;
Ferenc Puskás takes the prime with his four goals that were scored in the 7-3 final, won against Frankfurt in 1960.
Most goals in the series of European Cup finals
The record goal-scoring of Puskás can be continued along with Alberto Di Stefano, with whom they played in Real Madrid at the time. Both of the footballers scored seven goals in the final of the most prestigious European Cup series that has not been beaten since then.
The oldest goal scorer in the history of Real Madrid
Even though he was a relatively old player when he was certified to Real Madrid, our Golden-footed football player ran a nice career in the Spanish team as well. He certified to the star team at the age of 31 and played there until he was 38 as one of the key players in the team.
Besides being the oldest player ever to play for Real Madrid; proudly, he is the team’s oldest goal scorer, as he scored his last goal at the age of 38 and 233 days.
