Major ownership of Sziget sold

Forbes.hu reported that a British-American investment company called Providence Equity Partners had become the majority owner of Sziget Festival. The company will help improving the festivals of Sziget with strategic investments.

Although the Hungarian owners sold the majority (70%) of their ownership to Providence Equity Partners, which purchased it through Edition Capital, the current owners kept 30%, that is, the management remains under Zoltán Fülöp, Norbert Lobenwein and Gábor Takács and Károly Gerendai, who repurchased his ownership before the transaction.

Forbes.hu added that both Edition Capital and Providence Equity Partners had had investments in the media and entertainment industry before. Latter is specialised in the media and telecommunications sector. They have a share in Warner Music Group, in ProSiebenSat1 and in Ironman. Formally, the new majority owner will be a Luxembourgian company called LuxCo Ltd. The portfolio includes Balaton Sound, Telekom VOLT Festival, the Gourmet Festival, and Gyerek Sziget (Children’s Festival). MTI adds that, since the foundation of Providence Equity Partners in 1989, the company invested in more than 150 companies, and it is the primary capital fund to media, communication, education, and IT sectors. Its headquarters are in Rhode Island, in Providence, but it has offices in New York, London, Hongkong, and New Delhi, as well.

sziget 2015-budapestKároly Gerendai told to Forbes.hu that the aim of the investors is to create a festival portfolio in which Sziget will be a key element, because it is the most determining independent actor in the international festival market. He added that the Hungarian management would have a key role in building the international portfolio, and the festival would spread in new, foreign markets.

Károly Gerendai told to MTI, too, that, with the funds and international background of Providence Equity Partners and their team’s expertise, new opportunities would be open to Sziget Festival, which would lead them to a higher position.

Sziget Festival becomes Artists’ Favourite Festival in Europe

Every year the most prestigious awards of the European festival scene are handed out at Eurosonic Noorderslag in Groningen. Sziget Festival was shortlisted in multiple categories and this time it earned the very prestigious title: Artists’ Favourite Festival in Europe. Sziget Festival, celebrating its 25th edition this year, received multiple awards in the previous years and this new award is also a great feedback and motivation to continue on road of continuous success.

Main organizer and founder, Károly Gerendai, said the followings after the award ceremony: “Earlier the festival industry and the audience were the ones who voted for us, while now the international artists. I am very proud that Sziget has won all the categories it has ever been shortlisted in. Although we are very happy, this is also a huge responsibility as we have to keep up this confidence. Fortunately our current trends show that the trust of the audience, our Szitizens, is continuous and now it’s a great feedback that our international artists love our festival as well. The audience of Sziget is very colorful, and they are not only interested in the concerts, but arrive to the Island of Freedom to experience other exciting programs too! So, the artists do not only meet their own fans, but a much bigger music-loving crowd.”

Events of Sziget Cultural Management were nominated in various categories. Sziget was not only shortlisted in the Artists’ Favourite category, but was also in the competition for the “Best Major Festival” award, while B.My.Lake was shortlisted in the category of “Best Small Festival”.

In addition, Dan Panaitescu, long-time colleague of the Sziget crew, who tragically passed away last year has received the “Lifetime Achievement” award. The award was handed over to Károly Gerendai and Dan’s life partner. “We are very proud and at the same time very sad to receive this award for the work of Dan. However it is great to see how much the international community respected his work and how much they liked him. When everyone is standing with tears in their eyes…these are the times when you realize what a lost it is, that he is no longer with us.” commented Károly.

Sziget Cultural Management has received multiple awards in the past few years. Sziget Festival received the award for Best Major European Festival two times and also the Best European Line-up award last year. Both Telekom VOLT Festival and Balaton Sound was awarded as the Best Medium-sized European festival in the past and B.My.Lake started its award chain with the award for “Best New Festival”.

Sziget Festival draws record 496,000 visitors

Budapest, August 17 (MTI) – The week-long Sziget Festival in northern Budapest’s Óbuda Island drew a record 496,000 visitors this year, the event’s organisers confirmed on Wednesday.

The previous record was 441,000, set last year.

The festival attracted visitors from some 200 countries this year, including Nigeria, Vietnam, Qatar, the Marshall Islands, Lebanon, China and the Ivory Coast, the organisers said in a statement.

The event generated around 2,500 cubic metres of waste, 35 percent of which was recycled as useful material thanks to the Sziget Recycling programme. Some 10,000 people participated in the festival’s various recycling programmes, organisers added.

The festival’s new entrance system improved security and the number of petty crimes reported dropped by more than 50 percent this year, the statement said.

Sziget festival sets record at nearly 500,000 visitors

Budapest, August 16 (MTI) – The week-long Sziget Festival in Budapest attracted a record number of over 490,000 visitors this year, main organiser Károly Gerendai said on Tuesday, the event’s closing day.

Final figures are not yet available but the number of visitors far exceeded last year’s record of 441,000, he added. Similarly to 2015, the event was sold out on three days.

Gerendai said that the number of visitors can no longer be increased significantly in the years to come as the area of the festival has reached its capacity. Instead, efforts will focus on improving details and making sure that festival-goers even better enjoy the event, he added.

“Thanks to the personal identification system linked to tickets, security has improved, with fewer thefts and other crimes reported than previously,” he added.

Sziget attracts Dutch, UK visitors most – Photos from the festival

Budapest, August 13 (MTI) – The most tickets for this year’s Sziget Festival were purchased from the Netherlands, followed by the United Kingdom, the festival’s press office told MTI on Saturday.

Foreigners are well represented among festival-goers, who come from over 100 countries. The third largest group is the French, followed by visitors from Italy, Germany and Switzerland, Press Chief Viktória Vető said. But more than one thousand visitors came from faraway Australia, she added. Foreign sales still acount for about 80-85 percent of all weekly passes sold, similarly to last year, Vető said. Daily tickets are more often bought by Hungarians, she added.

Last year visitors numbered 441,000 at the Sziget. Thursday featured a concert by Rihanna, and on that day tickets were sold out and the total number of visitors was around 90,000, the organisers said.

Majority of young Hungarians view corruption as serious problem, TI survey finds

Daily News Hungary

Budapest, August 12 (MTI) – The vast majority of young Hungarians believe that corruption is a serious problem in Hungary and should not be tolerated, a survey presented by Transparency International (TI) Hungary on Friday shows.

The survey, presented by TI Hungary director József Péter Martin at the Sziget festival, found that 80 percent of 18-29 year olds consider corruption a serious problem. Fully 54 percent of the respondents said they thought all politicians were corrupt and 84 percent said corruption should not be tolerated.

According to the report, 54 percent of young people had experienced corruption in some form; 39 percent of them in health care and 29 percent during police procedures.

The survey was conducted over the phone in July with a sample of 500 people between the ages of 18 and 29.

[button link=”https://dailynewshungary.com/survey-orban-considered-wealthy-dictator-fidesz-considered-corrupt/” color=”black” newwindow=”yes”] An other survey: ORBÁN IS CONSIDERED A WEALTHY DICTATOR AND FIDESZ IS CONSIDERED CORRUPT[/button]

US Ambassador Colleen Bell said at TI’s event that corruption was not just about a few bad leaders who move money to offshore bank accounts, but is a problem that breeds instability and violence. Corruption can cause many to lose their faith in the system, she said. Many young people throughout the world are disappointed with their leaders and feel that their governments had let them down, she added.

The ambassador said she believed that a “systematic and rigorous” fight against corruption and the work of “educating people about the importance of transparency and accountability” can change the culture of tolerating corruption.

Anne-Marie Maskay, charge d’affaires ad interim of the French embassy, said the fight against corruption is a key element of strong democratic societies and the rule of law worldwide. It is important to raise awareness of this fight among young people, she added.

Besides Rihanna, whose concert on Thursday has been sold out, David Guetta, the Chemical Brothers, Sia and Noel Gallagher will also bring their acts during the week-long festival. Sziget Festival revenue set to reach EUR 19m

Budapest, July 6 (MTI) – Budapest’s Sziget Festival is expected to generate revenue of 6 billion forints (EUR 19m) this year, the organiser told Wednesday’s issue of business daily Világgazdaság.

This year’s revenue will be “somewhat higher” than last year’s, Sziget managing director Károly Gerendai told the paper.

As in earlier years, ticket sales are set to generate 75 percent of revenue while sponsorship and catering each account for 10-12 percent, he said. State support makes up 1 percent of revenue, he added.

“On the expenditure side, programme costs continue to make up the biggest item, followed by technical costs. The most expensive acts at this year’s festival are, naturally, Rihanna and the returning Muse,” Gerendai said.

Világgazdaság noted that week passes for the Sziget Festival, which will take place on August 10-17, were sold out already at the end of June.

Punters have greater spending power and festival-going has become “an integral part” of young people’s lives, he said. “That’s a global trend that Hungary is a part of.”

It has also become clear over time that visitors to the Sziget Festival are not looking for the cheapest price, but the best price-to-value ratio, which the festival delivers, he said.

“A couple of years ago, we changed our strategy for Sziget: because of the unrealistically high prices demanded by performers, we don’t want to and can’t compete with big international festivals that have more money. So, in the course of our development, we don’t want to spend more on star lineups, but on those things that make Sziget different from the other festivals, such as the spectacle, the diversity and the high quality of service,” he added.
