Fantastic! Budapest Airport shuttle to commute more frequently from October

Budapest airport shuttle tourist traps

From 1 October, Budapest Airport shuttle 100E, connecting the downtown with Budapest Airport, will commute more frequently on the busiest days. In the morning, more buses will carry passengers from Budapest to the airport, while in the afternoon, the frequency will increase for passengers hurrying to the downtown.

According to bkk.hu, the transport frequency of airport shuttle 100E will increase from October on Mondays, Fridays and Sundays compared to autumn 2023. The new schedule will enter into effect next Tuesday.

Airport shuttle 100E carries passengers between the Liszt Ferenc International Airport and the Deák Ferenc Square, in the heart of Budapest. The bus line operates 24/7 and the airport expects more tourists than last autumn.

Budapest Airport shuttle: 6-7 minutes instead of 8-9 minutes

Therefore, the increased frequency we got used to in the summer will remain on Mondays and Fridays. As a result, buses will commute every 6-7 instead of 7-8 minutes from the airport and the Deák Ferenc Square final stations. On Sunday, bus frequency will increase to every 6-7 minutes instead of every 8-9 minutes. On Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, 100E frequency will remain at 8-9 minutes, while on Saturdays, it will increase to 10 minutes.

You may purchase the shuttle bus tickets in the BudapestGO app, the vending machines of BKK and the customer service offices of the transport company. Check out the closest purchase place on BKK’s map HERE.

Young foreigners in Hungary love the capital for its vibrant cultural life and career opportunities

Young foreigners in Hungary Budapest tourists living in Hungary

Budapest Global Association’s recent survey reveals how young foreigners in Hungary see the country and the capital. In general, foreigners are more satisfied with the living conditions and opportunities in Budapest than the Hungarian youth. Here’s what young professionals from abroad love about the city and what they would improve.

Young foreigners in Hungary

Lelépő writes that a recent survey by the Budapest Global Association, conducted by the Equilibrium Institute, reveals that young people, including foreigners in Hungary, particularly those in their twenties, find the capital an ideal place to live. Budapest offers a wide range of opportunities in work, culture, education, and entertainment, making it highly attractive for young adults. However, the survey notes that while the city’s vibrant cultural scene and career development support appeal to this demographic, it may be less suited for families with young children and the elderly.

Good career opportunities

The research indicates that Budapest is highly appealing to young foreigners in Hungary, with three-quarters of young people between the ages of 18 and 35 living and working in the city liking it, and one in three recommending it as a place to live. The city’s excellent higher education institutions and abundant job opportunities make it an ideal location for career starters. Additionally, 40% of young people in Budapest express plans to start their businesses, highlighting the city’s potential for entrepreneurial growth alongside traditional employment paths.

Vibrant cultural life

Budapest offers a vibrant metropolitan lifestyle that appeals to young foreigners in Hungary. Survey respondents praised the city’s rich cultural scene, iconic entertainment venues, historic atmosphere, and diverse gastronomy. The survey revealed that 77% found Budapest exciting, 71% considered it lively, and 67% described it as open. Young people were also highly satisfied with the city’s public transport system, praising its convenience day and night, along with its timetables, frequency, and app functionality. The only criticism was the condition of the vehicles.

Do young people want to move from Budapest?

The survey reveals that 37% of young people in Budapest are considering moving, primarily abroad. Those with higher incomes and students tend to be more loyal to the capital, while individuals with lower education or financial difficulties are more likely to seek new opportunities elsewhere. Interestingly, young foreigners have a more positive outlook on Budapest’s core qualities, describing it as safe, close to nature, and less congested. However, they find everyday challenges like public cleanliness, tidiness, and healthcare more problematic.

This will be the all-time fastest train in Hungary, motorway remains closed for almost a year

Hungary Budapest-Belgrade railway

Dynamic testing of the Belgrade-Budapest superfast train started close to the Hungarian border. The subcontractor, the Deutsche Bahn Systemtechnik’s measurement train reaches 200 km/h in some sections. If ready, this will be the fastest train ever running in Hungary, but there is no news about finishing the Hungarian section of the line.

Train speed between Budapest and Belgrade may reach 200 km/h

According to Infostart, the testing period of the last, 100-km-long segment of the Belgrade-Budapest railway line in Serbia will be over on 10 October. Provided everything goes according to plans, the first scheduled train will begin carrying passengers on 25 November between Subotica (Szabadka) and Belgrade (184 kilometres). The stretch will take only 70 minutes, with trains running in both directions from 5 AM to 10 PM.

The Serbian President and the Greek prime minister announced earlier this year that they would add 1,500 kilometres to the Belgrade-Budapest line to establish a connection with Athens. The line is ready between Belgrade and Novi Sad (Újvidék). The high-speed train ‘Soko’ (‘Falcon’ in Serbian) completes the 76-kilometre-long segment in only 35 minutes.

Nothing is certain about the Hungarian line’s upgrade

In Serbia, the construction continued and in the last two years, the subcontractor renewed the Szabadka-Újvidék line. Szabadka (Subotica) is a town close to the Hungarian-Serbian border with a large Hungarian minority (26.2% in 2022). The dynamic testing started on the line and the German Deutsche Bahn Systemtechnik’s measurement train commutes at 200 km/h in some segments.

Therefore, the Serbian State Railways warned people to be extremely cautious near the railway line. Before, a woman was almost hit by a train in a suburban station in Belgrade. Here is the shocking video:

Péter Szijjártó called the Belgrade-Budapest railway upgrade projects the flagship of the Central European infrastructure developments. He added the new line would be ready by 2025. However, Serbian President Vucic talked about summer 2026. Infostart highlighted that nothing is certain about the end of the project. PM Viktor Orbán also confirmed the 2026 finish date in an interview.

The general elections will be held in Hungary in spring 2026.

Hungarian motorway remains closed for almost a year

A section of the M30 motorway, which connects Miskolc (NE Hungary) with the border of Slovakia, is undergoing repairs under warranty, the Construction and Transportation Ministry said on Friday. The ministry noted that the stretch, between Miskolc and Szikszó, had been closed since February because of cracks and sinking. Experts estimate that repairs could take 10-11 months, it added. The stretch, built by a consortium of STRABAG Építő Ltd. and STRABAG AG and opened in October 2021, is still under warranty.

Controversies at Wizz Air: Flight cancellations followed by bonus announcement for CEO

wizz air middle east debrecen tourism travel flight

Wizz Air cancelled a scheduled flight from Podgorica to Budapest after hours of delays, leaving passengers stranded overnight at the Montenegrin airport. However, despite the recent cancellations and delays, the airline sparked further controversy by announcing a new bonus package for its CEO, József Váradi.

After hours of waiting, Wizz Air cancelled its scheduled flight from Podgorica, Montenegro, to Budapest, Hungary, leaving several passengers stranded at the Montenegrin airport, HVG reports. The flight was originally set to depart at 12:50 PM on Tuesday but was officially cancelled around midnight. Many passengers spent the night on plastic chairs at the airport. One passenger reported that throughout the day, they were reassured that the flight would eventually take off.

After five hours of waiting, they watched a flight to Gdansk depart from Podgorica. At that point, passengers received vouchers worth HUF 4,600 (about EUR 12), followed later by another HUF 6,000 voucher (about EUR 16). Despite reopening the gate at 9 PM, the airline provided no clear information about the cause of the delay.

Wizz Air offers direct flights from Podgorica to Budapest twice a week, on Saturdays and Tuesdays. Initially, stranded passengers were told they could fly home on Saturday, but that flight was already fully booked. The next available flight wasn’t until the following Tuesday. Eventually, Wizz Air advised passengers to make their own way home, resulting in significant additional costs.

In response to the situation, Wizz Air told HVG that the flight had to be cancelled due to adverse weather conditions, which prevented the safe operation. The flight from Budapest had attempted to land at Podgorica but was diverted to Tirana due to the weather. Despite repeated efforts, the weather remained unsuitable for landing in Podgorica, forcing the plane to return to Budapest as the crew’s working hours were ending.

Bonus for the difficult times for Wizz Air’s CEO

In other news, Wizz Air announced a new bonus package for CEO József Váradi, despite recent cancellations and delays, HVG reports. According to Bloomberg, the airline plans to award Váradi a one-time share bonus of around GBP 700,000, three times his annual salary, set for payment on 1 October. Additionally, a long-term incentive package from 2026 could be worth five times his salary.

Last year, shareholders approved a two-year extension to Váradi’s bonus plan, which includes a potential GBP 100 million reward if he increases Wizz Air’s stock value to GBP 120 by 2021. Current bonuses would contribute to this target, however, the goal remains challenging, as Wizz Air’s stock price currently hovers around GBP 13.5, having dropped from GBP 22 since the onset of the Russia-Ukraine war and the summer airport chaos.

The company argues that this new compensation package is necessary to retain Váradi, who reportedly earns less than most airline executives. The bonus is intended to motivate him to guide Wizz Air through “difficult times” and improve the company’s performance.

Hungary’s busiest motorways to Austria, Lake Balaton to become 4-lane!

The Hungarian Concession Infrastructure Development Plc. (Magyar Koncessziós Infrastruktúra Fejlesztő Zrt., MKIF) is operating 1,237 kilometres of motorway in Hungary. They announced the development of the two busiest motorways in Hungary, the M1 connecting Budapest with Austria and the M7 connecting the Hungarian capital with Lake Balaton and Croatia. The renewed motorways will have 3+1X3+1 lanes in several segments, instead of the current 2X2. Hopefully, there will be fewer traffic jams towards Austria and Croatia after the extension.

Motorways will be renewed in Hungary

According to index.hu, the company will operate and extend 1,237 kilometres of Hungarian motorway until 2057. The MKIF is in the ownership of a consortium of private equity funds belonging to László Szíjj and Lőrinc Mészáros, two well-known Hungarian government-close businessmen. Antal Rogán, the Head of the Cabinet of the Prime Minister, said the contract with the MKIF can be extended with the M5 and M6 motorways.

The MKIF started to operate most of the Hungarian motorways from 1 September 2022. Until 2034, they undertook the obligation to build 279 kilometres of high-speed road and 299 kilometres of motorway. Before that, they have to bring the motorway pavements to a uniform level, which means the renovation of 538 kilometres. The deadline for this project is 31 August 2025. In 2023, they finished 3.6 million sqm, and in 2024, they completed 3.9 million sqm, 20% of the total highway pavement. Moreover, they will renew 200 bridges and overpasses.

Developments will start in 2025

In the next few years, MKIF plans to extend the M1, M7 and M3 motorways. The M1 will be extended between the M0 ringroad and the Austrian-Hungarian border. The M7 will be extended between the M0 and Balatonvilágos, while the M3 between Budapest’s Szentmihályi Street and Gyöngyös.

The extension of the M1 will start in 2025, the M7 in 2027, and the M3 in 2031. The third lane between the M0 and Concó will be ready in three years. The MKIF will build intelligent hard shoulders (ITS), which will open for drivers only if traffic is heavy. As a result, in peak hours, vehicles will be able to use four lanes to Austria and back to Győr. Between Győr and Hegyeshalom, the 2X2 lanes will remain, with an additional ITS.

The details of the extensions

The M7 motorway will have four lanes (3+1) until Szabadbattyán, and between Szabadbattyán and Balatonvilágos, there will be 2+1 lanes. Work will start in 2027. The construction of M200, connecting Komárom and Székesfehérvár, will also begin three years later.

The M3 will have 3+1 lanes until Gyöngyös, but the project will only start in 2031.

In Polgárdi, Hungary’s most modern asphalt mixing plant is under construction. The test period will start in October. The plant aims to help the operation and extension of the M7 motorway.

Comforting news for tourists: Hungary is among the safest countries in the world!

Hungary is among the safest countries in the world

According to the latest ranking of the Global Peace Index (GPI), Hungary is one of the most peaceful countries in the world with reassuringly good public security. Meanwhile, on a similar list comparing cities, Budapest did not rank that well.

Hungary is safe

According to Economx, an economy-focused Hungarian news outlet, Iceland, Ireland and Austria are the safest countries in the world. In our region, Slovenia and Czechia are exceptionally safe, just like Hungary. We ranked 14th on the list of more than 160 countries, which is good news. At the end of the list are countries at war or suffering from civil war: Israel, Syria, Russia, Congo, Ukraine, Afghanistan, etc.

Pay attention to overpricing in Budapest

Meanwhile, Numbeo compared the safety of the European cities. According to their results, Budapest ranked 51st on a list of 130 cities. Foreigners complained about overpricing in bars, clubs and restaurants, a revolting method owners of such places try to deceive people from abroad who are not aware of the prices in Hungary. The complaint concerned taxi drivers. But most of the foreigners praised the hospitality of the Hungarians.

Concerning cities, tourists found the Hague the safest. Crime is low, public transport is trustworthy, and taxis are well-regulated. The second place went to Trondheim, while the third went to Munich. In our region, Zagreb has been chosen the safest (6th place), while the Slovenian capital, Ljubljana, won the 7th position. Meanwhile, Naples, Birmingham, Coventry, Marseille, and Bradford finished at the end of the list.

Hungary is among the 50 best destinations for women travelling alone

TUI compiled its list of the top 50 best destinations for women travelling alone based on ten factors. These include gender gap, safety, prices, English knowledge and the number of tourist hotspots, turizmus.com wrote. For example, considering only the prices, Nepal is the best choice for women because the average restaurant bill is below EUR 2.

On the top of TUI’s final list are Germany, Spain and Portugal. In our region, Croatia is 7th, Austria is 9th, Czechia is 10th, Poland is 12th, Bulgaria is 18th, Serbia is 21st, and even Slovakia precedes Hungary with its 31st position. Hotel Palota in Lillafüred becomes Hungary’s first to receive prestigious certification

Hotel Palota Lillafüred

Hotel Palota in Lillafüred has achieved a significant milestone in sustainability, earning international recognition while maintaining its historical charm.

Hotel Palota in Lillafüred has made history as the first hotel in Hungary to achieve the international Good Travel Seal certification, earning the prestigious gold level, Lelépő reports. This certification, developed by Green Destinations, is based on the standards of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC). The gold rating signifies that the four-star hotel meets nearly two-thirds of these standards.

Built between 1927 and 1930 in a stunning neo-Renaissance style, Hotel Palota stands as a testament to history and heritage. The certification demonstrates that sustainability isn’t limited to modern, newly constructed hotels. The property’s commitment to sustainability is reflected in various areas, including its modernised heating, cooling, and lighting systems, as well as a recent roof renovation. The hotel also prioritises the preservation of its historical value, being listed in the National Heritage Register.

The Good Travel Seal is a multi-level certification system with five tiers, aimed at recognising sustainable practices in the tourism sector. Notably, the GSTC standards go beyond energy efficiency and green technology. They encompass a comprehensive approach to sustainability, addressing economic, social, and environmental factors.

Sustainability and preserving heritage in Lillafüred’s Hotel Palota

Sustainability at Hotel Palota extends beyond its infrastructure. The hotel is a proud member of the Bükk Circle and actively supports the “Edible Forest” program, which promotes the use of clean, local ingredients. Additionally, the hotel collaborates with the Symbiosis Foundation, which provides employment to hundreds of people with disabilities.

In recent years, Hotel Palota has placed a strong emphasis on celebrating its nearly 100-year-old history. Visitors can explore this rich past through a historical exhibition and a digital tour of the building, accessible via QR codes. The management is now setting its sights on further sustainability milestones, aiming to achieve Platinum or Diamond certification in the future. This would represent 100% compliance with GSTC standards, contributing to the global Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.

Designed by Hungarian architect Kálmán Lux, Hotel Palota also features the Mátyás Restaurant, recently transformed into a Renaissance-style venue. The restaurant’s stained glass windows depict castles from historic Hungary, adding to the hotel’s unique charm. The hotel is set within an expansive park filled with botanical rarities.

Located just 10 kilometres from Miskolc, the hotel is nestled in a picturesque valley surrounded by three mountains. The scenic beauty is further enhanced by the nearby Sinava River waterfall and the tranquil Lake Hámori, making the setting even more enchanting.

Will Wizz Air launch American flights? Here is what CEO Váradi said about plans

József Váradi Wizz Air CEO Hungary All You Can Fly

Wizz Air plans to launch long-haul flights with their new Airbus A321 XLR planes, but CEO József Váradi said they would not like to enter the American market. Instead, they would like to expand in the Middle East and Asia and will launch their first long-distance flight between London and Jeddah.

239 non-adjustable seats, 3 toilets, no free food

Wizz Air Holdings Plc. has a message for anyone considering the budget airline’s seven-hour flight to Saudi Arabia next year: If you want frills, bring your own”, Bloomberg wrote about Wizz Air’s new, long-range flights. That refers to the budget airline’s policies concerning how comfortable passengers can travel with them.

CEO Váradi told the news outlet in Abu Dhabi that every perk, from water to snacks and carry-on luggage, will cost extra money for their passengers. Váradi said they would like to serve pilgrims in the first place with their new London-Jeddah flight. However, passengers will not get anything for free during the 7-hour-long flight. Therefore, passengers will have to entertain themselves.

There will be no free meals on board the pencil-thin planes, the planes will not have adjustable seats and they will not be able to watch movies on displays built in the headrest.

The new XLR planes will be like these aircraft. Photo: FB/Airbus

The maximum number of passengers will be 239 and they will have to use three toilets accessible through a narrow corridor. In return, the tickets will be cheap: GBP 135 one way. Between Milan and Abu Dhabi, the price will only be EUR 100. Mr Váradi believes that is how they can democratise flying.

Wizz Air continuously tries to renew its service. In August, they introduced the “All You Can Fly” pass as a world-first, which Michael O’Leary, the CEO of Ryanair, called a stupidity. The idea gave a long-needed boost to the airline’s shares weakened by the problems with the Pratt & Whitney engines forcing dozens of Wizz Air planes to the ground for months.

Will Wizz Air launch Transatlantic flights?

The airline ordered 47 XLR planes and plans to create a new hub near London. The flight time of that plane is 8 hours, so even a Transatlantic route could be launched from Western Europe. However, Váradi does not want to. “We are not prepared for that”, he added. The CEO cleared that nobody expects them to launch flights to New York or Boston. Instead, they would like to expand in India and Pakistan to carry guest workers to the Middle East.

Wizz Air plans to increase its fleet to 500 carriers by 2030, but the disruptions in the supply chains may prolong that by 1-2 years.

Wizz Air does not cancel popular flights to the ‘Eternal City’ from Hungary in October!

Wizz Air flight to Rome

Good news for passengers: Wizz Air, Hungary’s low-cost airline, will not cancel its Debrecen-Rome flight in October.

We wrote in THIS article that as of 6 October, the Rome flight will be suspended indefinitely, confirmed by Wizz Air’s Corporate Communications Manager Olívia Harangozó.

However, Utazómajom, a Hungarian travel news media outlet, discovered that the communication manager did not give a 100% accurate answer last week. The new outlet asked Wizz Air again because their readers who have tickets for October flights had not been notified about the cancellations to Rome.

According to Wizz Air’s answer, the last flight to Rome from Debrecen will depart on 26 October instead of 6 October. They said there was an error in their booking system. That is why it showed the flight was unavailable. “We apologise for the mistake which we corrected”, they concluded their reply.

This is the reason why passengers were not informed about the cancellations.

Wizz Air halts most of its flights from Debrecen

Wizz Air decided to halt seven out of their eight flights from Debrecen in the winter season. The Hungarian budget airline is to keep only their Debrecen-London flight from November but with a significant reduction in frequency. Currently, there are five weekly flights, but starting in November, this will be reduced to three, operating on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.

That means Wizz Air planes will not fly to Eindhoven, Rome, Antalya, Corfu, Larnaca, Burgas, and Istanbul after November.

In July, Wizz Air decided to relocate the only plane based in Debrecen Airport and closed their Debrecen base.

Hungary’s 8 World Heritage sites: discover cultural and natural wonders through stunning photos

The 8 Hungarian World Heritage sites - Aggtelek Cave

Hungary is widely recognised as a beautiful country with rich landmarks and a profound history, but not everyone is aware of which specific sites have earned a place on the UNESCO World Heritage list. These eight sites offer an in-depth look at the country’s cultural and natural heritage. Each tells a unique story of human achievement and natural beauty, from historic urban landscapes to ancient vineyards. Thanks to legal protections and careful management, these sites will continue to inspire and educate for generations to come. Here are Hungary’s eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

1. Budapest: The banks of the Danube, Buda Castle, and Andrássy Avenue

Budapest, the capital of Hungary, has been an important city since the Palaeolithic era. Located along the River Danube, this Hungarian World Heritage site has witnessed numerous historical events, including the Roman city of Aquincum, the Hungarian Monarchy, the Turkish occupation, and the construction of the neo-Gothic Parliament. The city was first inscribed on the UNESCO list in 1987 when the Banks of the Danube and Buda Castle were recognised as World Heritage Sites.

Famous landmarks include the Gothic-style Buda Castle, the Parliament building, and Andrássy Avenue, known for being home to Europe’s first underground railway and symbolising the city’s development into a modern metropolis. Despite challenges such as building decay and environmental risks, Budapest has successfully preserved its historic character through meticulous planning and conservation efforts, allowing it to maintain its rich cultural heritage while embracing modern growth.

2. Old village of Hollókő

Hollókő is a small village in northern Hungary, about 100 km north-east of Budapest, which offers a glimpse into rural life as it was before the 20th century. The village features 55 traditional residential and farm buildings, along with a church, all harmoniously integrated with the surrounding farmland and woodlands. Hollókő is renowned for its traditional thatched-roof houses, which have largely remained untouched since the 17th century.

Although parts of Hollókő were reconstructed after fires in the early 1900s, the village has retained its traditional layout and agricultural practices. It remains a living community, carefully balancing tourism with preservation to maintain its cultural charm.

3. Caves of Aggtelek karst and Slovak karst

Situated on the border between Hungary and Slovakia, this Hungarian World Heritage site comprises over 1,000 caves formed by natural processes. Notable formations include the Baradla-Domica system and the Dobšiná Ice Cave, which are significant for their unique geological formations and ecosystems.

The Aggtelek caves offer a window into the Earth’s past, featuring elements from both tropical and ice ages. Protected by national laws, efforts are concentrated on minimising environmental damage and managing tourism to preserve this exceptional cave system.

4. Millenary Benedictine Abbey of Pannonhalma

Founded in 996, the Benedictine Abbey of Pannonhalma played a crucial role in spreading Christianity throughout Central Europe. The site includes remarkable buildings such as a Gothic cloister, an 18th-century refectory, and the Basilica, all surrounded by forests and botanical gardens.

The abbey remains a functioning monastery, home to monks who adhere to the Rule of St Benedict. Despite modern updates, it has preserved its historic appearance and continues to serve as a religious and cultural centre. A carefully devised plan ensures a balance between public access and the preservation of monastic life.

Fantastic news for travellers: Vienna-Budapest train services boosted with more frequent connections

ÖBB RailJet Budapest-Vienna train service

State-owned Hungarian railway company MÁV signed a cooperation agreement with Austrian peer ÖBB at the InnoTrans international trade fair in Berlin on Tuesday.

Cooperation for better train service

The agreement extends to international passenger transport, maintenance and cargo service, MÁV said in a statement.

It added that both sides will work to step up passenger train service between Budapest and Vienna.

The agreement, which covers improving the quality of international passenger transport, performing maintenance tasks, and improving the competitiveness of rail freight transport, was signed by Zsolt Hegyi, CEO of MÁV Plc. and László Mosóczi, CEO of MÁV-START Plc. on the Hungarian side, and Andreas Matthä, Chairman of the Board of ÖBB Holding AG on the Austrian side.

More frequent train services between Vienna and Budapest

Under the terms of the agreement, the two countries’ railway companies will work towards a two-hour journey time between Budapest and Vienna, and will try to adapt the timetable structure and the stopping patterns of international passenger trains accordingly.

Although a significant reduction in journey times will only be possible from 2028 after the renovation of the railway line between Hegyeshalom and Vienna, both parties are working to introduce timetable changes that will allow more passenger trains to run at shorter journey times each year without stopping at Hegyeshalom and Tatabánya.

Currently, two pairs of Railjet trains per day cross the Hungarian-Austrian border without stopping at Hegyeshalmom with MÁV-START drivers as part of a pilot project. To extend this, MÁV-START and ÖBB are jointly providing the drivers and the necessary train crews.

ÖBB will endeavour to ensure that Railjet trains from Budapest and beyond Vienna can run faster and with new rolling stock in the new timetable model. At the same time, to improve passenger satisfaction, MÁV and ÖBB will develop a quality assurance system that will allow for a fast and efficient exchange of information between the companies in the event of disruptions.

As we wrote earlier, MÁV trains to commute differently this autumn, Budapest Airport and Vienna lines affected.

In response to recent rocket attacks launched from Lebanon’s Hezbollah militants, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) carried out airstrikes targeting the group’s positions and rocket launchers. These rockets had been aimed at Afula and other towns in the Jezreel Valley, according to an IDF spokesperson. Several Hezbollah sites were hit, resulting in secondary explosions, suggesting that weapons were stored in the targeted buildings.

As tensions escalated between Israel and Hezbollah, more airlines announced the suspension of flights, Világgazdaság reports. Wizz Air, which operates from Hungary, temporarily cancelled its flights to Tel Aviv and Amman, which were scheduled for Tuesday. British Airways also suspended flights for 48 hours, while Azerbaijan Airlines scrapped its planned flights for the day.

Wizz Air stated it is in contact with affected passengers and continues to closely monitor the situation. On Monday, Lufthansa extended its suspension of flights to and from Israel until 14 October, a move affecting Austrian Airlines, Swiss, Brussels Airlines, and Eurowings as well.

Several other airlines have halted their Israeli routes indefinitely. United Airlines and Croatia Airlines have stopped flights without announcing a specific timeline. Flights from LOT and Virgin Atlantic have been suspended until 25 September, British Airways until the 26th, Air India until 24 October, Ryanair until the 27th, and Vueling through the end of October. Delta Airlines, Air Canada, and EasyJet have postponed flights well into the end of 2024, with EasyJet pushing its suspension until the end of March 2025.

Concerns are growing among travellers with upcoming reservations, especially those booked for the Jewish holidays. Thousands of ultra-Orthodox pilgrims traditionally travel to Uman, Ukraine, for Rosh Hashanah. Despite the ongoing conflict, Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport remains fully operational, with no flights being redirected to other countries, according to an airport authority spokesperson.

Israeli air strikes in Lebanon claim nearly 500 lives as death toll keeps rising

Airstrikes carried out by Israeli forces have intensified in recent days, and as of Monday, nearly 500 people have died in Lebanon as a result. The country experienced its deadliest day of Israeli airstrikes since the ongoing exchanges began nearly a year ago. According to Lebanese authorities, 492 people, including 35 children, lost their lives on Monday alone due to the strikes targeting Hezbollah militants, Világgazdaság writes in another article. The Lebanese Ministry of Health reported that the total casualty count includes 35 children and 58 women and that over 1,645 people have been injured. The death toll continues to rise as airstrikes persist.

US to send more troops to the Middle East

As the conflict between Hezbollah and Israel escalates, the United States is deploying more troops to the Middle East. In a daily press conference, Defense Department spokesman Pat Ryder said, without giving details, that it would be a small military contingent, but did not say what the new units would be tasked with, Világgazdaság reports.

Renovation of route to Budapest Airport to begin as road conditions worsen – VISUALS

Renovation of route to Budapest Airport to begin as road conditions worsen - VISUALS HERE

According to documents uploaded on the Government Offices’ website, a new environmental review and public hearing process has begun regarding the much-needed improvements to the road access to Budapest’s Liszt Ferenc International Airport (Budapest Airport).

Road leading to Budapest Airport in insupportable condition

According to the report of HVG, the Hungarian government considers the current state of the road leading to Budapest Airport unacceptable, noting that it reflects poorly on the country, especially for foreign visitors arriving by plane. As a result, they are moving forward with plans for a comprehensive upgrade, according to documents uploaded on the Government Offices’ website.

The urgency of the situation is clear. The document argues that the Gyömrői Road and the main route to the airport are no longer able to handle the growing traffic load. The road is deemed unsafe, prone to disruptions, and presents itself as a substandard urban road to international travellers, which negatively impacts the image of the country.

Public transport, cross-traffic to be prioritised

The proposed development will extend from the Üllői Road–Határ Road intersection, beyond Budapest’s administrative boundaries, to the Market Center junction. The project will prioritise public transportation, improve cross-traffic for vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists, enhance noise protection, and expand green spaces. The goal is to create a unified, modern road that befits a capital city.

However, the document emphasises that the project must not increase traffic pressure on the city centre or lead to more traffic flowing in from outer districts and the surrounding suburbs. Key components of the plan include building grade-separated railway crossings, expanding Kőér Street between Határ Road and Gyömrői Road, and renovating Gyömrői Road between Kőér Street and Hangár Street. Additionally, a new connection will be established between Hangár Street and Lakatos Street. The environmental impact assessment for the project began on 10 September, with a 60-day window for completion.

The project is of “national economic importance”

According to the document, the government has declared the project to be of national economic importance, along with its related environmental proceedings being classified as a significant transportation infrastructure development. The submission for the proceedings was made by Viköti Ltd., authorised by a consortium of Főmterv Plc. and Utiber Ltd., under the direction of the Ministry of Construction and Transportation.

Work on the road is expected to start in 2026 at the earliest, with the entire development estimated to take 3.5 to 5 years to complete. The road could be open for traffic by 2030.

The related public hearing will not require in-person attendance by residents of the affected districts. Comments and questions can be submitted by 18 October via email to zo*********@pe**.hu or by post to 58/B Mészáros Street, Budapest 1016.

Budapest metro reopens, more traffic restrictions to be withdrawn

Based on a statement issued by the Budapest Transport Company (BKK), the metro will touch the Batthyány Square metro station from tomorrow again. Authorities plan to withdraw additional traffic restrictions next week. The Danube peaked at Budapest yesterday at 5 AM at 830 cm, a bit below what authorities had calculated before.

According to hvg.hu, trains commuting on metro line M2 will halt again from early tomorrow at the Battyány Square metro station. The water level of the Danube started to decrease today after yesterday’s peaking. Authorities calculate a long receding time. Orbán said the dams had to endure the immense pressure until next Thursday.

BKK added that passengers would not be able to use the H5 suburban railway line from Budapest’s Batthány Square station to Szentendre on Monday and Tuesday. You may get on the trains only at the Margaret Bridge HÉV station.

More traffic restrictions will be withdrawn next week

Based on recent forecasts, tram nr 19 will carry passengers on its entire line from 24 September, just like tram nr 41.

From 25 September, you may travel with the H5 suburban railway from the Batthyány Square station. Furthermore, the bike lane running under the Margaret Bridge will also be reopened.

BKK said experts continuously monitored the water level and would decide about additional traffic restrictions accordingly.

Wizz Air halts Rome route from Debrecen amid broader flight reductions

wizz air middle east debrecen tourism travel flight

Starting at the end of October, Wizz Air will only operate flights to London from Debrecen, halting its Rome routes, while even the London flights will become less frequent. Meanwhile, two seasonal holiday routes are expected to return next year.

According to Dehir.hu, the Hungarian-owned low-cost airline continues to drastically reduce its presence in Debrecen.

As of 6 October, the Rome flight will be suspended indefinitely, confirmed Wizz Air’s Corporate Communications Manager, Olívia Harangozó.

She also noted that Wizz Air would maintain two daily flights to Rome from Budapest, though this is little consolation for travellers from Debrecen. While later dates for the Debrecen-Rome flight are still listed on the schedule, bookings are no longer possible after 5 October.

The route between Debrecen and Rome, launched less than a year ago in December, is now set to end abruptly despite previous communication that it had been performing well, making the suspension particularly surprising.

Wizz Air’s closure of Debrecen base

debrecen wizz air
https://www.facebook.com/debrecenairport/

In July, Wizz Air announced that it would relocate its Debrecen-based aircraft to Budapest from 27 October, sharply cutting the number of flights from the city.

Alongside the Rome route, Wizz Air will also cancel two more permanent routes from Debrecen—to Istanbul and Eindhoven—both of which will be dropped from the schedule starting in November, Dehir.hu writes.

The Eindhoven route, one of the oldest and previously most successful along with the London route, is being cancelled despite its long-standing popularity. The Istanbul route, on the other hand, was only introduced in April of this year.

Burgas as a summer route

Wizz Air’s statement confirmed that the Bulgarian destination of Burgas will remain available, although it was initially only intended as a seasonal route. However, Burgas flights will not operate this October, with the airline planning to resume the route in summer 2025, running from late June through September.

Regarding the Cyprus route to Larnaca, Wizz Air will revert it to a seasonal service. Although it became a year-round flight in 2022, it will now return to its previous status, operating only during the holiday season. The Larnaca route will be suspended at the end of October and resume in late March 2025.

Since Wizz Air’s statement only mentions these two holiday routes, it suggests that flights to Corfu in Greece and Antalya in Turkey are unlikely to return in summer 2025.

Changes to the London route

As things stand, by late October, Wizz Air will have only one regular flight left from Debrecen—to London—but even this route will see changes.

The London flight was Wizz Air’s first from Debrecen and has always been its most popular. At one point, it operated six times a week between Debrecen and the UK capital. Currently, there are five weekly flights, but

starting in November, this will be reduced to three, operating on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.

According to the current schedule, this arrangement will last until fall 2025.

In July, Debrecen International Airport Ltd., which operates the airport, stated that, with the support of its owners, it will take all necessary steps to reinstate popular and well-filled routes, such as Tel Aviv and Eindhoven, and potentially introduce new destinations starting in summer 2025, in collaboration with other airlines.
