Hungarian President Katalin Novák has left for Brazil on an official visit.
“After Central Europe, I am continuing to strengthen the international relations of my country in Latin America. I have been invited to Brazil because they are closely following for many years now how we are helping the Hungarian families,” Novák said in an English language post on Facebook on Saturday.
“They are interested in how we have managed to put childbearing, child-rearing and jobs in the focus of our policies,” she added.
Novák will travel first to Rio de Janeiro, where she will visit a navy base and meet students as well as members of the Hungarian diaspora. She will also meet with the Hungarian community in Sao Paulo and give a talk on Hungarian family support schemes.
Novák will visit President Jair Bolsonaro in Brasilia.

Only the official Facebook page of Hungary’s embassy in Kyiv reported about Romulusz Ruszin-Szendi’s visit to Ukraine. The Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, invited Hungarian politicians, including PM Viktor Orbán to Ukraine. However, no official of the government has accepted his invitation yet.
The commander of the Hungarian armed forces, Romulusz Ruszin-Szendi, paid an official visit to Hungary’s war-stricken neighbour yesterday. The official Facebook page of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine wrote about the event yesterday evening. That post was shared by the Facebook page of the local Hungarian embassy without any comments. Therefore, index.hu wrote that the Hungarian party kept the visit secret for some reason.
According to the Ukrainian post, a small delegation arrived in Ukraine headed by Ruszin-Szendi. He met Valerii Fedorovych Zaluzhnyi, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Zaluzhnyi said that the visit of his Hungarian counterpart was a sign that Hungary stood by Ukraine in the war against Russia.
“I greatly appreciate the professional relationship and companionship with my Hungarian colleague. I am satisfied with the military cooperation between our countries” –
Mr Zaluzhnyi added. He also added that the military relationship between the two states was excellent.
Based on the Ukrainian Facebook post, the Hungarian delegation made a tour in Ukraine. They visited Dnipro, Kryvyi Rih, and even Mykolaiv, which Russians have bombed recently. The Hungarian delegation was in Harkiv and Chernihiv. Furthermore, they visited Kyiv’s newest museum exhibiting objects Ukrainian forces took during the war.
Moreover, they visited a number of Kyiv suburbs where Russian forces allegedly committed war crimes (Gostomel, Irpin).
Honvedelem.hu shared a report about the official visit only after the index’s article was published. According to them, the two commanders discussed the present and future of the two countries’ military relationship. Ruszin-Szendi informed his Ukrainian counterpart about the military developments and the challenges lying ahead of the defence forces.
He expressed his appreciation towards the Ukrainian soldiers, who bravely protect their country and Ukraine’s citizens.

Although the main sights of Budapest can be reached by foot, public transport in the city is excellent, too. Read our article to get some useful tips on how to reach Budapest’s famous sights!
Buda Castle: bus
Probably the most popular attraction of Budapest, the Buda Castle can be found in 1st district. The Budapest bus number 16 runs between Széll Kálmán Square and Deák Ferenc Square through the Buda Castle District. Depending on the person’s location, one can get on the bus on Széll Kálmán Square or Deák Ferenc Square. In addition, travelling between the two squares is also easy, as they are on the same metro line. Metro line M2 (red) operates between Déli Railway Station and Örs Vezér Square. Although there are several stops within the Castle District, it is recommended to get off at Szentháromság Square. Just a few steps away, the majestic Matthias Church emerges.
However, due to the renovation of the Chain Bridge:
Bus 16 takes a shortened route between Széll Kálmán square (Ostrom sreet) and Clark Ádám square, it does not touch the stops between Clark Ádám square and Deák Ferenc square. From the castle, the city centre can be reached via Széll Kálmán tér.
Heroes’ Square: subway
Budapest’s iconic square is a beloved tourist attraction. In order to get there, using the metro is the easiest and quickest. Metro line 1 (yellow) runs between Vörösmarty Square and Mexikói Street and stops at Heroes’ Square. Fun fact: metro line 1 is the oldest metro in continental Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
So far, we had a look at buses and metros, but trams are even more common in Budapest. In fact, 602 trams are available for Hungarians and tourists every day. If one wants to discover the inner city, tram 2 is the perfect choice. It does not only provide a useful ride, but also offers the most scenic route, as it takes you along the Pest embankment. The 47 and 49 trams operate on Kiskörút (Small Boulevard) to Deák Ferenc Square.
Until July 17, tram 2 is replaced by buses:
Note, that trams 2 and 2M will not run between June 20 and July 17 due to renovations. Instead, replacement buses will run between Közvágóhíd and Kossuth Lajos square.
How to get to the railway stations?
Almost all railway stations can be reached by using the metro. Firstly, line 2 (red) goes from Örs Vezér Square to Déli Railway Station. Secondly, line 3 (blue) runs between Újpest-Központ and Kőbánya-Kispest Railway Station. Reaching both Kelenföld and Keleti Railway Station is possible by getting on line 4 (green), which is the newest metro line. Last but not least, Nyugati Railway Station lies on the route of the most popular tram lines 4 and 6.
Budapest Airport
With the majority of tourists arriving by plane, public transport to and from Budapest Airport is crucial. Luckily, the 100E airport bus offers a direct link to the city centre. Running from the airport to Kálvin Square and Deák Ferenc Square, the ride takes 40 minutes. However, taking the taxi might be a good option, too. Taxis are quite affordable and comfortable. Fares/km are about 400 HUF (1 EUR).
Tickets and passes
Every information is on the website of BKK. A single ticket costs 350 HUF (0,87 EUR), while monthly passes are 9500 HUF (23,75 EUR).
Located in the third district, the Roman Beach (Római-parti Plázs)is the main attraction of the summer. After nearly half a century, the free Danube beach reopens this year.
According to obuda.hu, the beach will be open from 15 July to 21 August. In case of good weather and water quality, this free beach offers a perfect refuge from the heat.
Free drinking water and toilet use
As liner.hu write, the Roman Beach provides free drinking water for visitors. Now that the temperature is extremely high, this service can come in handy. In addition, beach-goers can use the nappy changing table, shower and colourful sun loungers free of charge. Those who come by bike can leave their vehicles at the free bike storage.
For the first time in the history of the beach, the Danube Coast First Aid Service of the Hungarian Red Cross will ensure safety. On 28 June, they held the final day of preparation. They have toured the entire area and gone through a series of situational exercises. With the area being supervised, the Roman Beach is not only fun but also a safe place. It is important to mention, however, that bathing is only possible in the bathing area designated by the buoys during opening hours. Therefore, bathing in the designated area must be carried out in accordance with strict safety regulations and within the buoy line indicating a water depth of 120 cm.
Clean water awaits visitors
The opening was preceded by several measures. Firstly, they cleaned the riverbed and the coast. Secondly, the quality of the water has been checked and the beach received a permit from the competent authority. Moreover, the lawn of the beach has been taken care of and night security was employed.
Discover this free Danube beach and spend a relaxing day in the natural setting of Budapest’s iconic river!
Prime Minister Viktor Orbán received Vuong Dinh Hue, Speaker of the Vietnamese National Assembly, at his office on Tuesday.
The officials discussed deepening bilateral cooperation.
The Vietnamese speaker congratulated Orbán on his landslide election victory, telling the prime minister that the result showed the government put the interests of the Hungarian people first.
Judit Varga, the justice minister, Péter Szijjártó, the minister of foreign affairs and trade, and János Csák, the minister of culture and innovation, also attended the meeting.
It was noted that each year 200 Vietnamese students have the chance to study in Hungary, and the trade volume of the two countries is on an upswing.
Bilateral cooperation may be deepened in the areas of military security and industry, tourism, agriculture and pharmaceuticals.
Vietnam is Hungary’s key partner in South-East Asia, Speaker of Parliament László Kövér said on Monday, after talks with Vuong Dinh Hue, the head of Vietnam’s National Assembly.
While agricultural exports to Vietnam surpass imports, Hungary has “much to do” in developing bilateral economic ties, Kövér said in a joint statement after the talks.
Noting that Hue led a delegation of various experts, Kövér said the visit was “promising” regarding inter-governmental, scientific and educational cooperation.
The heads of parliament discussed the tied-aid programme Vietnam extended to the Hungarian parliament during the coronavirus pandemic.
Kövér said the global economy was “hopefully getting back on track”, including key sectors like tourism, one of the most dynamically developing economic areas.
Hue noted the two countries’ “long historic friendship”, despite the geographical distance. The visit strengthened the strategic cooperation between Hungary and Vietnam, he said.
He said the talks focused on inter-parliamentary and economic cooperation, as well as on opportunities to develop ties in science, research and education. Several university rectors were members of the Vietnamese delegation, in hope of building cooperation with Hungarian universities, he said.
The Institute of Hungarian Culture is scheduled to open this year in Vietnam, he added.
After the talks, the speakers signed cooperation agreements between the Hungarian parliament and the Vietnamese National Assembly, as did the two countries’ justice ministries.
Hue is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Viktor Orbán on Tuesday.
UPDATE
Addressing a Hungarian-Vietnamese legislation seminar in Parliament later on Monday, Kövér underscored Hungary’s commitment to achieving international sustainability, environmental and climate protection goals.
Kover noted that the United Nations General Assembly elected Csaba Kőrösi, a Hungarian diplomat, as its president earlier this month. Korosi serves as co-chair of the organisation’s Open Working Group on Sustainable Development Goals.
“The fact that Hungary was the first European Union country to ratify the Paris Agreement illustrates the decisive action our country takes on the issue of climate protection,” Kövér said.
The speaker expressed Hungary’s support for the EU’s 2030 climate target plan, but said it was also important to know “who will ultimately pay for it”.
Kövér noted that Hungary’s climate law targets a 40 percent reduction in emissions by 2030 compared with 1990 levels and commits the country to achieving climate neutrality by 2050. He said Hungary’s emissions in 2020 were 34 percent lower than the 1990 level.
Sándor Lezsák, deputy speaker of the Hungarian parliament, attended a session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organisation of Turkic States (OTS) in Cholpon-Ata, Kyrgyzstan, parliament’s press office told MTI on Sunday.
Hungary has an observer status in the organisation. Lezsak held bilateral talks with Kyrgyz House Speaker Talant Mamytov, parliamentary speakers of other member states and the Kyrgyz ministers of culture and education.
The deputy speaker visited the town of Karakol at the foot of the Tian Shan Mountains and inaugurated a memorial tablet dedicated to Hungarian traveller and orientalist Gyorgy Almasy, who led expeditions to the region in 1900 and 1906.
Addressing the Three Seas Summit in Riga on Monday, President Katalin Novák expressed support for a peaceful resolution to the war in Ukraine and promoted Hungary’s economic interests.
Novák noted on Facebook that the Three Seas Initiative was launched in 2015 to promote the North-South infrastructure axis in Europe to complement the existing East-West one.
At the Riga summit of the presidents of 12 countries, she highlighted issues “that are important to Hungary and the Hungarian people”.
As well as efforts to establish peace in Ukraine, Novák argued that the interests of countries without direct access to the sea must be taken into consideration when it comes to energy supplies.
Further, the president said: “We support the swiftest possible accession to the European Union of Ukraine and Western Balkans countries.”
The presidents of Germany, Poland, Austria, Slovenia, Lithuania, Estonia, Romania and Bulgaria, also attended the summit, alongside the prime minister of Croatia, the speaker of the Czech Senate and, through a video link, the Ukrainian president.
As we wrote earlier, Hungary’s President revealed whether she would visit Kyiv, Moscow, details HERE.
The Price of Travel platform has selected the 10 cheapest cities of 2022, and Budapest made the “Europe Backpacker Index” list. Budapest is not only cheap, but also a great place to discover. Read our article and find out why Hungary’s capital is worth paying a visit to.
According to the Backpacker Index, Budapest is the second cheapest city this year. The first place belongs to Bukarest, capital of Romania, and the Bulgarian city, Sofia takes the third place.
Budapest is the 2nd cheapest city
Although Budapest is on the list of the cheapest cities, that does not automatically mean that it is a low-quality city. Regarding the capital of Romania, the portal says the old town is “undoubtedly charming” but the rest of the city is not very attractive to tourists.
On the other hand, Budapest is a world-class tourist city that just also happens to be unusually cheap.
While the city centre can be expensive, just a little further, rather cheap hotels and hostels await guests. In addition, beautiful castles, cathedrals and thermal spas are available for a good price.
The Daily Backpacker Index of Budapest is HUF 10,761 = USD 28.25 = EUR 26.91/day.
According to Csaba Baldauf from the Hungarian Hotel & Restaurant Association, a good season is expected. Budapest is preparing for crowded hotels where a total of up to 75 percent occupancy is offered by an internationally outstanding value for money. – reports index.hu
Tourist attractions also generate interest, and Budapest is full of possibilites when it comes to famous buildings, historic sights or inexpensive entertaiment.
Városliget
For example, taking a walk in the beautiful parks such as Városliget is free. The newly opened Zene Háza (House of Music) or the Millenium Háza (House of Millennium) can be found there. One can admire the statues on Heroes’ Square or take photos of the majestic Vajdahunyad Castle, too.
The castle district
Just like Városliget, the castle district is also free for everybody. Of course, having a coffee would not be that cheap, but the view from the Buda castle is free – and still, it is priceless.
The most visited square is Szentháromság tér, where one of the characteristic buildings of Budapest, the more than seven hundred-year-old Matthias Church stands.
Thermal baths
Although the thermal baths and spas are not free, they are still considered to be quite cheap in Europe.
Prime Minister Viktor Orbán met with World Athletics President Sebastian Coe in Budapest on Sunday, the PM’s press chief said.

For many years now, the settlements around Lake Balaton have been the most popular for domestic holidaymakers. Locals know this and are familiar with the extremely high prices. There are crowds of tourists gathering every year, who spend hours waiting at the beach. However, some prefer to go to quieter and cheaper holiday spots. Of course, these cannot compete with the Hungarian sea in beauty and atmosphere, but they do offer pleasant surprises for travellers.
Last year, of the 274 designated natural bathing sites, 165 natural bathing waters were rated excellent, 64 good, 6 tolerable and 4 unsatisfactory. Apart from our priority lakes for tourism – Lake Balaton, Lake Tisza, and Lake Velence – most of the natural bathing sites continue to be classified as excellent. Bathing sites around Hungary receive continuous monitoring, reports Pénzcentrum.
Before going to the beach, it is worth checking the NNK website above for a list of designated bathing sites. The site also details the annual bathing water quality and the results of the latest water tests. Information is also available on the websites of the metropolitan and county government offices and at the bathing sites.

Leaders of the International Red Cross understand Hungary’s policy on the war in Ukraine, and the importance of the decision to reject the transport of weapons, Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said in Geneva on Tuesday.
Szijjártó held talks with Peter Maurer, the head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and Jagan Chapagain, Secretary General of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).
At the meeting, Szijjártó said
Hungary’s government had a duty to guarantee the safety of Hungary and Hungarians, and aid those fleeing the war, the foreign ministry said in a statement.
So far, 772,000 people have arrived to Hungary from Ukraine, he added.
By rejecting direct transport of lethal aid to Ukraine from Hungary, the government is ensuring the security of those living on either side of the border, and also aids the Red Cross’s work in Ukraine from the organisation’s logistics base in Debrecen, in eastern Hungary, and its regional centre in Budapest, he said.
“The Hungary-Ukraine border is considered a safe one, and so humanitarian aid runs no risk of attacks,” he said.
Szijjártó said Maurer and Chapagain had thanked Hungary for its effors.
“They understand how important it is that Hungary accepts every single refugee… we provide for them, treat them with respect, and try to help in all aspects of life. We will continue to do so until the end of the war,” he said.
