Exciting news: 7 brand new hotels to open soon in Budapest

Hotels in Budapest - budapest city autumn fall weather

Hotels in Budapest are experiencing a significant period of investment this year, with multiple establishments set to open in 2024. Despite projections of a decrease in new hotel openings due to investment delays, the market is still planning the introduction of around 7 hotels, adding around 580 rooms to the city’s accommodation options. Let’s discover the brand new hotels in Budapest that will open soon!

New hotels in Budapest

The standout launch of 2024 in Budapest is set to be the opening of the Kimpton Bem Budapest Hotel, the first of its brand in Hungary. The project consists of two parts, with the office segment completed last year and the hotel section facing Bem Square currently nearing completion. The hotel is scheduled to open its doors in early summer, with preparations such as staff selection and training already underway, according to Turizmus.com.

The Kimptom Bem Hotel

The Kimpton Bem Hotel Budapest promises a luxurious experience with elegant decorations and intricate details across its 127 rooms, including 11 character-filled suites and a Presidential Suite on the 5th floor with a private roof deck. The hotel’s restaurant offers modern Mediterranean cuisine in a casually elegant setting, complemented by a rooftop greenhouse providing stunning panoramic views of Buda and Pest. The hotel aims to offer a blend of comfort and sustainability; consequently, its three-level underground garage will feature electric chargers.

Managed by Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants, renowned for its boutique-style accommodations and pet-friendly services, the Kimpton Bem Hotel is poised to become a haven for relaxed living and gastronomic indulgence in Budapest.

The Bo33 and Bo18 Hotel

The owners of Bo33 and Bo18 hotels in Budapest are expanding their portfolio by opening a new four-star boutique hotel at 53 Csengery Street. This new hotel, part of the Bo53 project, is set to open in the autumn of this year and will feature 80 rooms. In response to guest demands, the hotel will offer not just double and family rooms but also residential units with kitchens. Services will include breakfast, a wellness area with infra- and Finnish saunas, a jacuzzi, massage rooms, and a fitness room. Like their other boutique hotels, this new addition will cater to both individual tourists and corporate clients.

The Three Corners Hotel and Resort

Three Corners Hotels and Resorts is constructing a 64-room city hotel at the corner of Paulay Ede and Nagymező Streets, with an anticipated opening this summer. The new four-star hotel will showcase a blend of classic style and modern luxury, offering unique room designs. Services will include breakfast, 24-hour reception, saunas, an elegant sectional hall and a limited food and beverage outlet with a “Broadway” menu targeting the “Pest” trade. Additionally, another unit of Three Corners – Hotel Anna, one of the best three-star hotels in Budapest, is temporarily closed for expansion and development.

Joe & Joe Hostel

Joe & Joe Hostel, located on Klauzál Street in Budapest, is targeted towards the Y Generation. Although construction was temporarily halted, work resumed last autumn, and the hostel is now taking shape with the walls up and construction ongoing. This innovative project aims to bridge the gap between hotels, hostels, and apartments by offering 400 beds across 78 rooms in various layouts.
Emphasising dining options, Joe & Joe is challenging conventions in the hospitality industry. The unit is expected to be ready for occupancy by the end of this year, although the opening may extend to early 2025.

The Király Hotel and Rum Hotel

Triholding Group is actively developing properties into hotels in Budapest. They are currently working on transforming the building at 36 Király Street into the Király Hotel and Hostel, expected to open by late 2024 or early 2025, with an estimated 100 rooms. The group also has ongoing projects at the former Szrogh House on 20 October 6th Street, aiming to create a strong four-star hotel.
Additionally, the expansion of the Rum Hotel at the corner of Bástya and Kecskeméti streets is underway, with plans to add another 50 rooms this year to its existing 40 rooms.

Biden scares democracy supporters with Orbán while Trump calls Hungary’s strongman best, smartest

Trump Orbán

“No one is better, smarter or a better leader than Viktor Orbán,” former US President Donald Trump has said.

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán published the video of Trump’s remarks on his Facebook page on Saturday, together with a comment: “Thank you, Mr President!”

Orban met Trump on Friday in the former president’s Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida. Talks were followed by a dinner and concert.

In the video recorded at the concert, Trump said: “No one is better, smarter or a better leader than Viktor Orbán. He’s fantastic”.

“He’s a non-controversial figure because he says: ‘This is the way it’s gonna be,’ and that’s the end of it. Right? He’s the boss. No, he’s a great leader.”

“Viktor is a Great Leader, respected all over the World,” Trunp said in a post on his messaging platform.

According to Politico, Joe Biden also mentioned the Trump-Orbán summit in one of his speeches. “You know who he’s meeting with today down in Mar-a-Lago? Orbán of Hungary, who’s stated flatly that he doesn’t thinks democracy works, he’s looking for dictatorship”, Biden said.“I see a future where we defend democracy, not diminish it,” he added.

Here are the Hungarian EU presidency’s priorities concerning economy

European Union Hungary Poland venice commission EU funds

In preparation for Hungary’s EU presidency in the second half of the year, National Economy Minister Márton Nagy on Friday met Thierry Breton, the EU Commissioner for the Internal Market, to discuss the economic challenges brought on by the war between Russia and Ukraine, the EU’s competitiveness and industry policy, issues of the internal market and the Hungarian presidency’s priorities.

Nagy said Hungary would aim to boost the common market and industry, cut supply chains, and to bolster digitalisation and modernisation. It would especially support SMEs, the establishment of an internationally competitive financial services sector, and the mobilisation of labour market reserves, he said.

Nagy told Breton that Hungary saw developing the EU’s industry as a priority, and was open to picking up talks on a comprehensive EU industrial strategy, which were discontinued in 2020 excepting details such as the Green Deal, which had been adopted separately.

Hungary wants to foster connectivity and avoid blocks forming within the EU, Nagy added.

Noting that the EU had no leading role in tech-driven new industrial sectors, Nagy promoted an approach where the government works to “create a coherent framework” for proposals from industry players. The strategy should focus on sectors such as e-vehicles and AI, he added.

Nagy and Breton agreed that promoting the EU’s competitiveness was a priority, and that was only possible through cooperation, the ministry said. The bloc will have to break down energy prices and curb its energy dependency. The bloc’s green transition should be bolstered by a transitional use and development of nuclear energy, he said.

He also called on the EU to develop a response to the US’s Inflation Reduction Act.

Nagy and Breton also pledged to strengthen cooperation in cutting red tape for economic players and member states’ governments, and said that the internal market should be kept free from new limitations, the statement said.

PM Orbán: Trump ‘is name of peace’

Orbán and Trump

After meeting the former president of the United States, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán declared Donald Trump “the president of peace” who “commanded respect around the world and established conditions for peace”.

Peace endured in the Middle East in Ukraine while Trump was president, Orbán said in video released to MTI on Saturday. “If he were still the president of the United States, there would be no war today,” he said.

He said peace would emerge when world leaders were around who wanted peace. “I’m proud that Hungary is among such countries.”

The prime minister said opportunities abounded in US-Hungary economic relations, and while trade turnover has topped 9 billion US dollars, “we don’t want to stop there”.

He said “when Trump returns” to the White House, “we’ll reinvigorate US-Hungarian trade ties”.

Orbán noted that the election campaign in America was “going full steam ahead”, and it was up to Americans to come to their own decision, though Hungarians could “honestly admit that it would be better for the world and Hungary if President Donald Trump were to return.”

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is meeting former US President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump for talks at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida on Friday, the PM’s press chief said.

The Hungarian delegation headed by Orbán arrived at Mar-a-Lago at 5pm local time, and are scheduled to have an hour-long meeting with Trump and his team, Bertalan Havasi told MTI. The talks will be followed by a dinner and a concert, he said.

FM Szijjártó: ‘Trump as strong US president would guarantee stability of global security’

Having a strong president in the White House always ensures a form of stability for global security, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said on Friday ahead of Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s meeting with Donald Trump in Florida, adding that if Trump returned, the United States could again be led by a strong president.

Orbán is set to meet the former US president in Palm Beach later in the day which will be their third bilateral meeting. The foreign ministry cited Szijjártó as saying that the substantial lead Trump established in the Republican primaries this week practically guaranteed his nomination for the November election.

“So we can say that our prime minister will soon be meeting the Republican challenger [to the Democratic presidential candidate],” Szijjártó said.

Szijjártó said he was convinced that had Donald Trump been elected US president in 2020, the war in Ukraine would not have happened, and the conflict in the Middle East could be resolved much faster.

He underscored that Hungary-US relations were at their peak when Trump was the president of the United States.

Meanwhile, Szijjártó said he will hold talks on boosting bilateral economic ties, underlining the importance of cooperation with Florida.

He said he will meet with the head of the recently established Hungarian Chamber of Business and Commerce in Florida as well as representatives of electronics maker Jabil, which employs 4,000 people in Hungary.

Other Florida-based businesses also have significant investments in Hungary, he said, adding that the Hungarian Chamber of Business and Commerce could be of help to the several Hungarian companies interested in entering the Florida market.

The minister said that if Florida were an independent state, it would be the world’s 14th largest economy, adding that this made cooperation with the state important. Trade turnover between Hungary and Florida came to 300 million US dollars last year, he said.

Szijjártó also mentioned Hungary’s cooperation with Florida in sports, noting the rising popularity of teqball, a Hungarian invention, in the state.

Orbán held panel discussion in Washington before

The US Heritage Foundation, a conservative think-tank, on Thursday hosted a panel discussion entitled “The Future of Relations between the United States and Hungary” with Prime Minister Viktor Orbán as a guest participant, the PM’s press chief said.

Orbán held the panel discussion with Kevin Roberts, the think-tank’s president, and the audience included renowned US right wing politicians, analysts and public personalities, Bertalan Havasi said. The programme was introduced by Vivek Ramaswamy, a US conservative politician, commentator and former Republican presidential candidate.

The participants said the world needed a new movement to fight for justice, tradition, families and ordinary people.

At the event held behind closed doors, Orbán was asked about the successes of Hungary’s conservative family and economic policies, the war in Ukraine, US-Hungary relations, President Donald Trump, and his personal political beliefs.

After the programme, Orbán met Steve Bannon, US media personality, political strategist and Trump’s former advisor, at the Hungarian embassy in Washington, DC.

Long stretch of Balaton coast is being nationalised: less beach for tourists

Summer Hungary Balaton

The Erzsébet of the Carpathian Basin Foundation for Children will be closing off the waterfront area in front of the Erzsébet camp in Fonyódliget at Lake Balaton. The area, known for its tranquil tree-lined beach where various activities like dog-walking, cycling and fishing coexist peacefully, will no longer be accessible.

The Erzsébet Camp, boasting an extensive coastline along Lake Balaton and offering stunning views of the north shore panorama, spans one and a half kilometres, as per its its website. However, shared access to the beach will cease this year. The camp’s owner, the Erzsébet for the Children of the Carpathian Basin Foundation (Erzsébet a Kárpát-medencei Gyermekekért Alapítvány), told 24.hu that starting in 2024, the beach adjacent to the camp will be exclusively reserved for campers, thus enhancing the safety of children at the camp.

The local government and the Erzsébet Foundation

The local government of Fonyód was unaware of the planned closure of the beach, as they currently claim ownership of the area. Nonetheless, the Fideszled town is in the process of swapping the waterfront area with the state. Although the exchange has yet to be finalised, according to a law amendment published in the Hungarian Gazette in December 2023, the state intends to transfer ownership of the beach area to the foundation for children and youth programmes. In return, the city will receive two suburban properties and one inland property, including a valuable waterfront area whose future use remains uncertain.

The foundation had previously acquired some waterfront areas near the Erzsébet Camp in Fonyódliget in 2019. However, a law amendment at the time required them to ensure access and proper use of the government-owned area. The foundation is reportedly also aiming to acquire a private road around the camp, currently utilised by both cars and bicycles, which cannot be closed to public traffic.

The camp management has proposed closing the road, but neither the city nor the government office has agreed to this yet. The owner of the private road plans to close it but still allow cyclists and pedestrians access. Questions regarding the closure date and notification to the municipality remain unanswered by the foundation.

The Erzsébet Camp at Balaton

The Erzsébet camp in Fonyódligeti, situated along the Balaton coastline, has undergone a complete renovation in recent years. Spanning a kilometre and a half, the camp offers a picturesque view of the north shore. Modern and innovative yurt tents are set up at the camp, blending classic forest ambience with the Balaton atmosphere. Outdated buildings from the 1970s have been replaced with new yurt-type accommodations and programme venues, while existing structures have been renovated.

The Balaton camp comprises five sub-camps, each with 160 accommodations for camp-goers and brand-new bathrooms. The modern twin tents accommodate 10 people each, boasting thick walls and modern ventilation. Additionally, the communal spaces in the yurts, capable of housing up to 800 people, have been refurbished for relaxation and entertainment. The new programme venues aim to provide a diverse and accessible environment for all visitors to enjoy and unwind, according to Erzsébet Táborok.

Hungarian culture minister in Egypt: National heritage ‘priority issue’

Hungarian Culture minister in Egypt

Preserving natural cultural heritage is of outstanding importance both for Egypt and Hungary, János Csák, the culture minister, said in Cairo on Monday, adding that the north African country served as an excellent example in that endeavour.

Csák told MTI by phone after meeting Nevine Youssef El Kelani that Egypt has a diverse national culture in which the Coptic Christian church and Muslims live side-by-side.

“Cairo’s government is making huge efforts to ensure that Christians, too, live peacefully in the country and to prevent violence stemming from religious differences,” the minister said.

Csák said he held talks on Sunday with Mohamed Ayman Ashour, Egypt’s minister for higher education and scientific research, as well as the minister in charge of education.

“They think along the same lines as the Hungarian government about culture, which for them not only embodies the arts but a lifestyle, a way of thinking, and the way they see the world,” the minister said.

Csák said he briefed Egyptian government officials on the transformation of the model for how Hungary’s universities are run, and they expressed appreciation for the changes.

At his meeting with Prime Minister Mostafa Kamal Madbouly on Sunday, he discussed the financing system of science and universities, and they agreed on launching joint education programmes with the launch of joint Hungarian and Egyptian diplomas.

Deputy Speaker of Parliament Csaba Hende attended a meeting of the parliamentary heads of the Visegrád countries and Ukraine in Prague on Thursday, and said the event had shown that “the Visegrad cooperation is alive in its parliamentary form”.

The meeting of the heads of government of Czechia, Hnugary, Poland and Slovakia earlier in the week highlighted the common ground on issues such as the fight against illegal migration, a joint stance against EU tax harmonisation to preserve the region’s competitiveness, and the protection of nations’ sovereign right to determine their energy mix, Hende said. They are also working together to create regional energy independence and to protect the European markets from poor quality agricultural produce, he said.

After the meeting, Hende had bilateral talks with Ruslan Stefanchuk, the speaker of the Ukrainian parliament.

Leader of Hungarian Jewish organization is in Israel, met Israeli leaders amid war

Leader of Hungarian Jewish organization met Israeli leaders amid war

The head of the Federation of Hungarian Jewish Communities (Mazsihisz), Andor Grósz, met Israeli President Isaac Herzog in Jerusalem on Thursday, and expressed the solidarity of Hungarian Jews with the plight of the war-torn country.

Grósz and Herzog discussed the current affairs of Jewish diasporas worldwide, the latest developments of Israel’s war against Hamas and the aid Hungary is providing for Israel.

Herzog praised Hungary’s consistent stance in standing up for Israel, and said that while other countries have seen a surge in anti-Semitism, “Jews … can continue to practise their religion freely in Hungary.” They also touched on the possibility of Herzog visiting Hungary later this year to mark the 80th anniversary of the Hungarian Holocaust.

During his five-day visit, Grósz met Minister of Defence Benny Gantz and Gideon Sa’ar, a minister without portfolio appointed after the 7 October Hamas attack on Israel, to discuss the state of the war against Hamas.

Grósz also visited the Be’eri kibbutz near Gaza, a site of the massacre, delivered a donation collected by Hungarian Jewish communities and expressed his sympathies to the community for the suffering they had seen since the start of the war.

He also met Yuli Edelstein, the head of the Knesset’s foreign affairs committee, and former defence minister Avigdor Lieberman.

Hungary, Italy agrees in this crucial matter concerning the war in Ukraine

Hungary, Italy agrees in this crucial matter concerning the war in Ukraine

The Hungarian and Italian governments’ “clear and resolute position” is that “we will not send soldiers to Ukraine”, Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said on Wednesday after talks in Italy.

He said on Facebook that he and Italian counterpart Antonio Tajani had reviewed the situation of the war in Ukraine and were in agreement that European countries sending soldiers to Ukraine would pose the risk of the outbreak of a third world war.

“As a result, the governments of both countries have a clear and resolute position: we will not send soliders to Ukraine,” he said.

Hungary-Italy cooperation important in security, economy, energy

Hungary and Italy already maintain significiant cooperation in security and the economy, while developing energy cooperation will add an another dimension to existing relations, the foreign minister said in Rome on Wednesday.

The ministry cited Szijjártó as saying after talks with Italian counterpart Antonio Tajani that Italy had never before played as important a role in the Hungarian economy as currently, with Italy being the second most important target of Hungarian exports after Germany. Bilateral trade was record high last year, exceeding 8 billion euros, he added.

Italy is among the ten largest investors in Hungary and cooperation is also increasing in the defence industry, with a growing number of joint investment projects, he said.

“Our defence cooperation in NATO has reached a new level, with Italians making the largest foreign contribution of 250 soldiers to the enhanced forward presence multinational battalion in Hungary, and there are ongoing talks about how to further expand security cooperation within NATO in this area,” he said.

“There is a special Hungarian-Italian responsibility for the stability of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and through this for the Western Balkans,” he added.

The development of energy cooperation will add another dimension, with a recent agreement with Slovenia on natural gas interlinks that will open the way for establishing a Hungary-Slovenia-Italy natural gas supply corridor, he said. Liquefied natural gas arriving in LNG ports in Italy can be expected to appear in Hungarian supplies in the mid-term already, he added.

Illegal migrants flooding Italy

Commenting on Hungary’s upcoming EU presidency, he said the Hungarian government was determined to take action againts illegal migration, with Hungary facing “enormous pressure” on the Western Balkans route and Italy on the Mediterranean route.

“The number of illegal migrants arriving in Italy increased by around 50 percent last year, so we share identical interests in protecting Europe’s external borders and in reducing the root causes of migration,” he said.

“”It is our common interest that Brussels should change its migration policy and stop inspiring further and further waves of migrants in the direction of Europe because the consequences will primarily affect the countries that lie on the external borders, regardless of whether they protect sea borders or land borders,” he added.

Szijjártó also met with the managing director of the United Nations World Food Programme in Rome. The WFP will finish moving into its new global finance service centre in Budapest within a couple of weeks, he said. The centre, which will manage 70 percent of all financial transactions necessary for the WFP’s operation, will start operating in May, he added.

Check out the 4 cheapest thermal baths in Budapest!

Pesterzsébet outdoor pool

Prices have gone up in every sector, and thermal baths are no exception. Most places have sky-high prices in exchange for a mediocre service. Let us introduce four of the best baths with quality service and affordable prices.

The Budapest baths are considered world league in terms of quality and quantity, yet still, some don’t manage to match expectations. They can overshoot, which results in their prices becoming extra high with a daily ticket reaching above HUF 10,000 (EUR 25.70) or have a low quality that ruins the whole experience.

Let us assure you, that’s not the case here. The baths listed are great for an afternoon of relaxation or even a wellness weekend. They have everything that a bath could possibly have with a secret added bonus of relative affordability and absolute quality.

Pesterzsébet Salt-Iodine Spa and Beach (Pesterzsébeti Jódos-Sós Gyógy- és Strandfürdő)

Pesterzsébet baths

The Pesterzsébet Salt-Iodine Spa and Beach offers an exclusive service since salt and iodine thermal baths are quite rarely found in these waters. According to Femina, the waters here are enriched with salt-iodine and bromine, which can do wonders for gynaecological and circulatory problems, stress relief and reducing chronic inflammations.

PM Kristersson looks forward to discussing Sweden’s NATO membership with Orbán in Budapest

Ulf Kristersson orbán

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson expressed on Monday his confidence in Hungary’s commitment to finalising Sweden’s accession to NATO, stating that there is “a strong will” from Hungary’s side.

We have reached another episode in Sweden‘s to NATO membership. Following Turkey’s endorsement of Sweden’s entry into the military alliance, Hungary found itself in an uncomfortable position. The expansion of the world’s most powerful military coalition was blocked by a nation with a modest army, citing previous disparaging insults from Stockholm. Demands were absent, leaving uncertainty regarding Hungary’s desires. However, it appears that Orbán has successfully navigated this peculiar deadlock by brokering a significant military equipment agreement with Sweden. Now, even to his constituents, the former veto may seem justified. One thing is certain: Hungarians harbours no ill will towards the Swedes, nor have they ever.

It appears that the Swedish side have acquiesced to the Hungarian proposal, and the visit of the Swedish Prime Minister to Budapest is now confirmed.

“When it concerns Hungary, I eagerly anticipate my visit to Budapest, and we will certainly inform you once the date is set,”

Kristersson said, responding to a question during a joint press conference with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk in Warsaw.

Kristersson further revealed that he and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán have engaged in “several discussions over the past weeks”, expressing his anticipation for their forthcoming meeting.

We previously outlined the potential scope of a grand bargain deal here: How can Sweden join NATO? Orbán seals a massive arms and military industry deal.

Meanwhile, as we reported yesterday, US senators claim that Orbán cabinet endangers Transatlantic security.

Hungary’s most popular university degrees among foreigners

Hungary's most popular university degrees among foreigners socialists call for wage hikes

While there are a great number of people flooding to work in Hungary, what do the numbers say about education? Let’s see how many people come to Hungary for the sake of learning.

Hungary has indeed had some problems with its education system recently, but regardless, university level education does have its beneficiary qualities. How convincing are these benefits for foreigners?

Popular fields

These facts are according to a conclusive survey done by Eurostudent in more than thirty countries, which was conducted back in 2022. This research, also noted by Economx, states that the number of foreigners in the Hungarian higher education system barely exceeds 10 percent.

The fields most populated by foreigners are natural sciences, agriculture, engineering, social sciences, medical and health sciences. The popularity of these degrees can be due to their high quality and well-known successes in addition to their internationality. Meaning that, with a degree in medical sciences, one can work just about anywhere. There are no exclusively specific systems in place that would obstruct that field from its internationalism.

These degrees naturally bear a great number of students from abroad, while some fields seem to lack foreign students.

Less popular fields

Those lacking are mainly teacher training, legal and political science programs and sports education. Some of these, like law degrees, can be explained by the fact that they are very unique to Hungary and once someone commits to it, it’s quite hard to move away. The other part of the list may be in relation to the quality of these same degrees in neighbouring countries.

Surprisingly, in these fields, the low numbers aren’t only for foreign students. There are also fewer people with dual Hungarian citizenship partaking in these degrees.

Tendencies of time

According to the survey, most students who came from abroad are enrolled in master’s programs. When looking only at master’s programs, 19 percent of the whole student body is counted as a non-Hungarian. In undivided programmes, this number is 9 percent. It’s lowest in the undergraduate programs, with a shy 7 percent of students hailing from abroad. Seems like students are generally more keen on leaving their old life for their studies in their later years.

Surprising statistics

These statistics translate into Hungarian universities’ population being 90 percent Hungarians, including those with dual citizenship. Out of this staggeringly high number, 87 percent were born in Hungary. What is surprising though is that out of the 13 percent of students who were born outside the borders, 8 percent come from beyond Europe. Out of those who study in Hungary now, only 3 percent were born in neighbouring countries and a shy 1 percent marks those who come from more distant European lands.

To summarise, the total proportion of those whose native language is not Hungarian is around 10 percent.
