White Christmas on the horizon? Snow and blizzards expected across Hungary!

Budapest snowfall white Christmas

On the fourth Sunday of Advent, a wavy frontal system approaching from the northwest will bring significant weather changes across Hungary. The southern winds are expected to pick up, with increasing cloud cover spreading over the country. By the afternoon, light precipitation may occur in northern regions, followed by more widespread rainfall and snowfall later in the evening.

According to Időkép, snow and sleet are forecasted for northern and northeastern areas, while rain is expected elsewhere. Around Budapest and in the Northern Mountains, a few centimetres of snow accumulation is likely by midnight.

The beginning of next week will see a Mediterranean cyclone sweeping across Hungary, bringing additional precipitation. On Monday, most parts of the country, except the northwestern and northern Great Plain regions, could experience snowfall or sleet. The real highlight comes on Tuesday, Christmas Eve, when significant snowfall is anticipated, particularly in eastern parts of the country.

This snowfall could create a picturesque white landscape across many regions—a rare sight for the holiday in recent years. However, along with the snow, strong winds are forecasted, leading to the possibility of blizzards and drifting snow, especially in open areas.

While many eagerly anticipate a white Christmas, travellers and residents should prepare for potential disruptions caused by the strong winds and snowdrifts. Stay tuned for updates as weather conditions unfold.

Extensive snowfall covered Hungary, Budapest public transport changed, Budapest-Austria train line collapsed

Extensive snowfall reached Hungary and Budapest in the last few hours. As a result, a thin, a couple of centimetres thick snow layer covers most of the country, including the urban areas. Concerning some bus lines in the capital, that means disruptions. The snowfall made passenger transport collapse on numerous train lines.

Budapest public transport changed in the hilly regions

According to idokep.hu, the snowfall caused some changes in the public transport system of Budapest. BKK says the changes concern bus lines nr 21, 212, 212B, 221, 212A, 21A, and 210, all of which commute in the hilly areas of West Buda.

PM Orbán’s first snowman:

Gergely Karácsony cleared in a previous Facebook post that the authorities follow a strict schedule concerning snow removal from the roads. In that regard, inferior roads in West Buda are at the end of their priority list, which is why snowfall usually results in changes there.

Less precipitation over the weekend, MÁV line collapsed

According to portfolio.hu, Storm Darragh, causing cancellations and delays due to strong winds in the Netherlands’ air traffic, changed course. Instead of arriving in the Carpathian Basin with intensive precipitation, it will swirl in the Alps region, slow down and a Mediterranean cyclone will be born Southwest of Hungary.

As a result, the amount of precipitation on Sunday will decrease, and extensive rains will only arrive next week.

Both Saturday and Sunday will be cold (1-7 and 3-9 degrees) and cloudy, and the Southern wind may become heavy. Rainfall will be rare these two days.

According to portfolio.hu, some suburban, InterCity and international trains commute with 20-40 or even 40-60 minutes delays. Based on MÁV, the problems concern the trains commuting on the Budapest-Győr-Hegyeshalom-Vienna line.

Snow covered Hungary this morning

Even though September and October were dry and mild, it seems winter arrived earlier in Hungary this year than meteorologists forecast. The edge of a Mediterranean cyclone reached Hungary last night and this morning, bringing lots of precipitation. Some regions will see that in the form of snow.

Snow-covered Hungary: here are some photos

According to HungaroMet, the cyclone’s edge that was formed above Germany and Austria arrived with strong winds. In a post yesterday, they predicted 30-60 km/h breezes, but in Békés and Csongrád-Csanád counties, their speed may reach 70-90 km/h. For today, they forecast windy and cloudy weather with lots of precipitation. They added that mainly in the northern and northeastern parts of the country, it will fall in the form of snow. The biggest amount of snow is expected in the Mátra and Bükk mountains.

According to their morning report, it snowed in the Transdanubian Mountains, Budapest, and the North Hungarian Mountains, while rain and sleet dominated the Kisalföld region and the southern counties. A thicker layer of snow can be found in the higher areas of the northern and northeastern regions.

Index.hu wrote, based on HungaroMet, that the maximum thickness is expected to be between 3-10 centimetres. Above 2-300m, 10cm of snow cannot be excluded. According to the state-owned company, on Friday, the temperature will be between 0 and 6 degrees.

Saturday will be mostly sunny, but in the eastern regions, there can be flurries. The maximums will be between 0 and 7 degrees, minimums around -6 and 0. Sunday will also be sunny, but clouds will cover the northern regions. The chance for precipitation is low. The minimums will be the same as on Saturday, but maximums will be higher between 4 and 11 degrees.

Snowstorm alert: Half of Hungary braces for snow and strong winds

Fundamental change cold conquers Hungary with possible snowfall! 24 december

The Hungarian Meteorological Service (HungaroMet) has updated its warning maps, issuing alerts for half of Hungary due to expected snowfall on Friday. Additionally, three counties—Veszprém, Komárom-Esztergom, and Fejér—face warnings for snowdrifts caused by strong winds.

Snowfall arrives tonight

While Thursday daytime will remain dry, mixed and solid precipitation is expected in northwestern regions by late evening, HungaroMet reports. Starting early Friday morning, precipitation will spread across the country, with northern areas primarily seeing snow, while rain and sleet dominate the south. In regions like the Transdanubian and North Hungarian Mountains, as well as Budapest, heavier, wet snow may accumulate, blanketing landscapes in white.

Strong winds and temperature fluctuations

Friday will also bring strong southern and southeastern winds, reaching stormy levels in Csongrád-Csanád and Békés counties. By morning, winds will shift northwesterly, intensifying around Sopron and Lake Fertő. Overnight lows will range from -5°C to 4°C, with the coldest conditions in northern valleys. Daytime highs will vary between -2°C and 9°C, depending on the region.

Clearing skies by afternoon

Clouds will start to break from the northwest in the afternoon, with precipitation retreating to southeastern areas. In some regions, rain and sleet may transition into snow before stopping entirely. However, snow depths of up to 10-12 cm are possible in certain areas by the end of the day, with snowfall likely across most of Hungary except the southernmost regions.

Residents are advised to stay cautious and prepare for potentially hazardous conditions.

Winter’s roar: Severe weather warning as cold front hits Hungary

Hotels in Budapest - budapest city autumn fall weather

Hungary is bracing for a dramatic weather shift as a powerful cold front sweeps across the country, bringing heavy rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds of up to 80 km/h. Temperatures will drop sharply, with widespread frost expected by Thursday morning and snow likely in some regions by the weekend. The unpredictable conditions mark the arrival of winter with a mix of storms, freezing lows, and fleeting sunshine.

A powerful cold front is set to sweep across Hungary, bringing thunderstorms, strong winds, and a sharp drop in temperatures.

A stormy transition

According to Economx, HungaroMet reports that the approaching front will thicken cloud cover on Wednesday, accompanied by widespread rainfall and gusty winds. In some areas, thunderstorms may also occur. The strongest winds are expected in the northern Transdanubian region, where gusts could reach 60-80 km/h, especially in higher elevations.

By morning, southwestern winds will intensify in parts of the Nyírség and Hajdúság regions before shifting northwestward later in the day. The wind speeds will gradually ease by the afternoon.

Thunderstorms and heavy rain

Thunderstorms are most likely in the southern and southwestern parts of the country, with localised rainfall reaching up to 20 mm. In the Zemplén, Mecsek, and Bakony mountains, rain may briefly transition into sleet or snow at higher altitudes.

A wintry chill

Wednesday’s daytime highs will range from 8 to 14°C, with temperatures dropping to 0-5°C by late evening. Thursday morning will bring widespread frost, with lows plunging to -6 to -7°C in sheltered areas like Őrség and Zala, and -5 to +2°C elsewhere.

While sunshine will dominate on Thursday, occasional snow showers may occur in northeastern regions. Daytime temperatures will stay between 2 and 8°C, accompanied by brisk northwesterly winds.

Mediterranean cyclone to follow

Friday’s weather will be dominated by a Mediterranean cyclone, delivering significant precipitation across the country. In the south, rain and sleet are expected, while the north could see substantial snowfall. Highs will range from 5-9°C in the south and -1 to +4°C in the north.

Weekend outlook

Saturday promises sunny spells but with isolated showers or snow flurries and chilly temperatures from -2 to +7°C. By Sunday, milder air will arrive from the southwest, with highs reaching 10-11°C in the south, though northeastern areas may remain frosty under persistent fog and low clouds.

Prepare for rapidly changing weather conditions as winter makes its dramatic entrance.

Meteorologists predict snow across multiple Hungarian regions next week

Meteorologists say that snow will cover multiple Hungarian regions next week

Meteorologists have forecasted that a Mediterranean cyclone will reach Hungary next Friday, potentially bringing widespread snowfall to many regions. The Northern and Western counties are expected to have the highest likelihood of being blanketed in a thin layer of snow.

According to Blikk, the week will begin with a western breeze, showers, and snowfall in the mountainous regions on Monday. By Tuesday, a cold front is expected to move into the Carpathian Basin, bringing stormy winds and significant rainfall. However, in the Transdanubia region, snow is likely instead of rain.

Tuesday may prove challenging for individuals with cardiovascular conditions due to sharp temperature fluctuations. While temperatures in the morning will range from 7 to 15°C, they are expected to drop considerably in the afternoon.

Thursday is predicted to be dry, sunny, and windy, with freezing temperatures at dawn and daytime highs ranging between 3 and 9°C.

On Friday, the arrival of a Mediterranean cyclone will dominate the Carpathian Basin, resulting in snowfall across most parts of Hungary. The Northern and Western counties are most likely to experience significant snow cove

The first significant snowfall of the season could reach Hungary today!

Snow Hungary Budapest weather snowfall

Hungary’s certain regions could see light snowfall today. A chilly cold snap is poised to hit north-eastern Hungary today, bringing a chance of light snowfall and sleet—though don’t dust off those sledges just yet!

The first big snowfall of 2024

As Femina writes, a cold snap is expected to bring potential snow and sleet to Hungary’s north-east today, though it’s unlikely to be substantial enough to bring out sledges. Recent snowfall in cities like Dunaújváros was due to industrial snow, a phenomenon occurring in foggy, smoggy conditions near factories, where rising water vapour crystallises in low-level stratus clouds. However, with a cold front moving in from the south, normal snow may develop in the Bükk and Zemplén regions, where temperatures could hover around freezing. Light snow and drizzle are anticipated, though any lasting snow cover remains unlikely at this stage.

New cyclone forming: snow may surprise Hungary next week

Snow may surprise Hungary next week

September and October were outstandingly warm this year in Hungary, November is cooler and drier, but next week everything may change thanks to a possible new cyclone sweeping through Hungary on Thursday and Friday, and bringing snow from the Alps.

First snow may arrive in Hungary next week

In the last few days, the weather of the Carpathian Basin was characterised by an enormous anticyclone covering not only Hungary or the Carpathian Basin but half of the continent. Thanks to that anticyclone, the weather was dry and cold in Hungary in the next few days. According to Blikk, a Hungarian tabloid, cold air is to arrive in our region starting next Wednesday. Moreover, another one is to arrive from the North next Friday.

The two cold air masses will merge west of Hungary and form a cyclone over the Alps. That will fundamentally modify the weather of the Carpathian Basin. Since the cold air mass is relatively small, meteorologists do not know where its centre will be. If it is formed over the line of Austria and Northern Italy, we can expect rain in Hungary from Thursday and Friday. Above 4-500 metres, at the feet of the Alps in Hungary, the precipitation may be snow.

Snow may surprise Hungary next week
Photo: depositphotos.com

In the West, the maximum temperature is expected to be 2-4 degrees, while in the East, it will be 10-12 degrees.

Cyclone centre in the West means no snow in Hungary

However, provided the cyclone centre is above France and Switzerland, the temperature will be higher and we cannot expect snow. It will not be warm, but the maximums will be around 5-8 degrees in Western Hungary and 12-17 degrees in the Eastern regions of the country. Furthermore, in that case, a serious amount of precipitation is not likely.

Because of the anticyclone over Hungary, the breeze is moderate, and the air has become polluted. The air is stuck in the Carpathian Basin, so the air quality deteriorated in the region: it has become unhealthy or even dangerous in several Hungarian towns and cities, including Miskolc, Pécs, Kecskemét, Nyíregyháza, Szeged, Székesfehérvár, and Dunaújváros.

Here is a video of the polluted air stuck over Budapest:

Experts recommend that people with cardiovascular problems should spend only limited time breathing the polluted air.

Geomagnetic storm caused Aurora over Hungary again

A solar flare on 6 November caused Aurora over Hungary on Thursday and Friday. It was weak and coloured the evening sky to pink. HERE you may check out some videos of the spectacular phenomenon.

Currently, Hungary’s weather is two-faced. In the Southwest, fog rules the air, so the temperature is much lower. In Keszthely and Fonyód, close to Lake Balaton, thermometers show only 2-3 degrees. Meanwhile, in all other regions of the country, the skies are cloudless and the temperature is above 12 degrees.

Make the most of the mild weather! Temperatures to drop as low as -5°C by Sunday morning in Hungary

hungary autumn frost weather forecast

Saturday will offer a pleasant, autumnal day perfect for outdoor activities, but a sharp cold front is expected to sweep through Hungary by Sunday, bringing frosty conditions with morning lows that could reach -5°C early next week.

Saturday will bring mild, ideal hiking weather to much of Hungary, with daytime temperatures reaching between 13-17°C, Telex reports. The dry cold front will arrive by Saturday, possibly bringing light showers to eastern areas and strong winds, particularly in the Transdanubian Mountains. However, temperatures will remain relatively mild throughout the day.

The real cooldown will set in on Sunday, with temperatures dipping to between 7-12°C in the afternoon and the first frost expected by morning. While skies will clear by Sunday afternoon, expect brisk winds to linger, though no further rainfall is predicted.

Next week, this chillier autumn weather pattern will hold, with sunny days and widespread morning frosts. Monday’s early hours may see temperatures drop as low as -5°C, though daytime highs should reach 7-14°C, offering a crisp but sunny autumn atmosphere.

Significant shift in Hungary’s weather: first snow on the horizon

Significant turn in Hungary's weather first snow approaches

Hungary has enjoyed an extended Indian summer this year. Aside from a brief cooler spell in September, the weather has remained mostly warm and dry. Even this weekend offers summer-like conditions for outdoor activities. However, a marked change is expected by Tuesday, with the first snow potentially arriving.

According to Tények, the news magazine of TV2, last October saw record-high temperatures, whereas this year’s temperatures have stayed closer to seasonal norms. Night-time lows are currently around 3–5°C, while daytime highs still reach approximately 15°C.

Tuesday will bring colder temperatures, strong winds, and increased precipitation. The Kőszegi Mountains, in particular, are likely to experience especially cold conditions, and snowfall could occur in the area next week.

Experts at MCC’s Climate Policy Institute note that temperatures in the Carpathian Basin are rising faster than in surrounding regions due to global warming. They report that winters and summers are now warmer than ever here, particularly in December and January. Additionally, the number of summer-like days (when temperatures exceed 25°C) has significantly increased during both autumn and spring.

Storm alert in Hungary: Hail and lightning on the horizon – weather forecast

hungary stormy weather cloudy sky

Summer weather keeps shrinking to smaller and smaller areas in Hungary. On Saturday, the Hungarian Meteorological Service issued a first-level, yellow alert across the country.

“In the affected regions, the primary threat is lightning, though strong winds and hailstorms may also occur in some cases. If HungaroMet withdraws the first-level alert or escalates it to a second-level warning, we will issue a new announcement,” HungaroMet stated.

The service also shared a post on Facebook. It explained that after the massive rainfall across Central Europe, the summer-like weather in Hungary is now limited to smaller areas as a rain zone gradually takes over most of the country. On Saturday, temperatures in the eastern border region still reached 28-29°C, but rain and cooler weather are expected to arrive there soon as well.

In western Hungary, more cumulus clouds will form, with some areas experiencing temporary cloud cover and the possibility of a brief shower. By late Sunday afternoon, the sky will gradually become more overcast, with thickening high clouds, leading to a mostly cloudy or overcast evening in the western regions.

A southerly to southeasterly wind will occasionally strengthen in the North Transdanubia and central parts of the country. Overnight temperatures will generally range from 15 to 21 degrees Celsius (59 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit), though cooler spots may experience lower temperatures. The highest temperatures on Sunday are expected to be between 29 and 34 degrees Celsius.
