Astonishing PHOTOS: geomagnetic storm with Aurora Borealis over Hungary, new Danube bridge decorative lighting
Hungary had not seen such a jaw-dropping Aurora Borealis phenomenon since 2003, thanks to a serious geomagnetic storm. Apart from the magnificent photos of the aerial phenomenon, we’ll show you how beautiful the new Danube bridge’s decorative lighting looks.
According to Időkép, a G5-level geomagnetic storm hit Hungary on Friday night, which happened in November 2003 for the last time. As a result, we could see a mesmerising Aurora Borealis over Hungary. Here are some photos:
That was the fifth time we could detect the Aurora Borealis over Hungary with instruments. However, this was the first time we could see it with the naked eye, thanks to the strong geomagnetic storm. For example, from the shores of Lake Balaton, one could feel they entered a stargate and arrived in a different world.
The fact that we could see a greenish Aurora Borealis instead of a pinkish-reddish tone is rare in Hungary. It happens only once in every 20-30 years.
Since we are currently in the Sun’s active period, we will probably see more Aurora Borealis phenomenons over Hungary in the next 2-3 years. However, the geomagnetic storm will probably not be as strong as during the day before yesterday.
Here is the beautiful decorative lighting of the newest Danube bridge
The newest Danube bridge connecting Paks and Kalocsa in South Hungary looks at night as if it were in the United States, Világgazdaság wrote. One of the local councillors of Kalocsa shared a spectacular photo of the decorative lighting testing. Here it is:
The bridge is Hungary’s 20th overpass connecting the two sides of the River Danube. The implementer also tested its bearing capacity with eight trucks weighing 40 tonnes each during the weekend.
The inauguration of the bridge is expected to be in June. The bridge will take the name of Pál Tomori, a Medieval archbishop of Kalocsa. Tomori was the commander-in-chief of the Hungarian forces in the Battle of Mohács in 1526 against the Ottoman Empire led by Sultan Suleiman. The defeat marked the end of the Kingdom of Hungary.
The government decided to build a new bridge between two Southern Hungarian towns in 2015. The groundbreaking ceremony was held in 2021. The new bridge will allow locals to reach Kalocsa from Paks in only 15 minutes.

Early beach season starts today in Hungary: Here are the places you can visit on 1 May!
Thanks to the favourable weather conditions, numerous beaches are kicking off their season earlier this year compared to previous ones. With a significant number of beaches set to welcome visitors as early as 1 May, enthusiasts will have even more options to indulge in some waterfront fun over the weekend.
Some beaches open earlier
In the past, tradition dictated that almost all beaches would open on 1 May, regardless of weather conditions. However, in today’s context, operators prioritise anticipated visitor numbers over tradition, meaning beach openings now hinge largely on weather forecasts. Fortunately, this year appears promising in that regard, as turizmus.com indicates that numerous spas are set to open their beaches and seasonal pools on 1 May and throughout the weekend.
The Spas
In various Hungarian towns, the opening of outdoor recreational areas like beaches and pools will occur gradually throughout May and into the summer. Hajdúszoboszló’s beach opens with a large-scale event on 1 May, while the Aquapark and Premium Zone follow later.
Zalakaros will allow swimming in pools from 3 May, with additional attractions like slides opening during the Pentecost weekend. Mórahalom’s outdoor facilities began opening on 1 April, with full beach access to come later. Kiskunmaja’s outdoor slide and wave pool have been open since April. CserkeszÅ‘lÅ‘’s beach opens on 1 May, initially with limited pool access. Szeged will see three beach openings in early May, including the Aquapolis beach opening on 1 May.
In several larger Hungarian cities, including Szolnok, Békéscsaba, and Debrecen, beach openings are underway, although, in the city centres, only smaller beaches like Kerekestelepi and Aquaticum will open in about a month.
In Budapest, Aquaworld’s outdoor pools are set to open on 1 May. Additionally, there are year-round outdoor pools, primarily thermal or spa pools, such as Széchenyi Spa in Budapest, famous for its year-round outdoor pool access. NyÃregyháza’s Aquarius Spa is renowned for its outdoor spa pool with adventure elements, while in Egerszalók, only the children’s pool is seasonal, with other outdoor pools open year-round.
In recent years, notable dates like Pentecost have become pivotal for spa openings, resembling the significance once held by May Day. This year, Pentecost falls earlier, on 19-20 May, disrupting this trend. Nonetheless, some spas, including Gyula Castle Spa, Harkány Spa, and Palatinus Spa in Budapest, plan to open their beaches or parts thereof this weekend. Conversely, others, like Egri Thermal Baths, have chosen Children’s Day, the last weekend of May, for their openings.
Later in the season, openings coincide with the beginning of summer holidays, observed by major aquaparks like Annagora in Balatonfüred, Aquacity in Zalaegerszeg, and Aquaréna in Mogyoród. However, precise opening dates tend to be uncertain, often marked by approximations like “end of May” or “mid-June,” with weather conditions frequently influencing these plans.

Hot, summer-like weather returns this weekend in Hungary
Sunny and hot, summer-like weather will rule Hungary in the next few days.
After days of cold and rain, hot spring weather will return to Hungary. According to idokep.hu, the last three days of April will be summer-like everywhere in the country.
From Sunday, the daily maximums will exceed 25 degrees in many regions because a hot and dry airmass will conquer the Carpathian Basin from the South.
Today, showers may occur in the West, Southwest and North, but Sunday will see only cirrostratus and cumulus with lots of sunshine. However, the wind will be strong in the coming few days, but daily maximums may compensate us with even 27 degrees on Sunday.
Next week will be hot and sunny, too. In the afternoons, the thermometres will show even 24-28 degrees in some regions. However, from Sunday, UV radiation will also be harmful. Thus, everybody should take precautions before sunbathing.

April Madness: a blanket of snow covers Hungary’s highest peak – Photos, VIDEO
A couple of weeks ago, it was 28 degrees Celsius in some parts of Hungary, but last night, snow fell on KékestetÅ‘, the country’s highest point (1014 m).
According to the weather site IdÅ‘kép, KékestetÅ‘, a popular hiking destination, was “a winter wonderland on Sunday evening.”
The Hungarian peak was hit by heavy rainfall, and the thermometer read close to 0 degrees Celsius, creating a snow cover.
Met.hu said that the more continuous rainfall zone east of the Danube gradually moved northeastwards, while clouds also increased in the clear Transdanubian areas. Daytime highs will be between 9 and 15 degrees. By late evening, the air will cool down to between 4 and 9 degrees.
HungaroMet is reporting that several cyclones are swirling around us, which means that the coming days will see more wet and cool weather, while the weather will also be changeable. Forecasters are also saying that the second half of next week will see a clear warming trend.
In the afternoon, the precipitation system will leave the northeastern boundary, but showers may re-emerge in places behind it. The clouds will break up in the evening, and the showers will end.

Spectacular starfall expected in Hungary!
The Lyrid meteor shower will reach Hungary in the early morning of Monday. That means we may see even 10-12 shooting stars per hour. Prepare for the biggest starfall of the year!
According to Időkép, the first large meteor shower is approaching Hungary. The luckiest could already spot one or two on the night sky earlier this week. The peak of the meteor shower will be on early Monday, so for those getting up in time, all wishes may come true with a dozen shooting stars every hour.
Those who miss the opportunity tomorrow can get a lower-intensity replay with the same experience in the early hours of Tuesday. However, the full moon on Tuesday will make it more difficult to spot all the meteors entering the atmosphere of the Earth.
According to Időkép, we may expect a less cloudy sky in the Northwest, West and Southwest. Therefore, the best options to spot some shooting stars in the next two days are Győr, Sopron, Szombathely, Nagykanizsa, Pécs and the Lake Balaton region.

Extreme Weather Alert: Hungary braces for thunderstorms and cold front!
Extreme weather arrives in Hungary. From late afternoon on Monday, showers and thunderstorms may develop in the north and northwest part of Hungary as a precursor to the cold front, with the possibility of one or two becoming more intense.
According to Telex, the showers and thunderstorms might intensify, including a chance of supercells, primarily near the border, moving from west-southwest to east-northeast.
Weather forecast
These thunderstorms could bring wind gusts exceeding 90 km/h and hail. Hunaromet has issued an orange warning for Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County and a yellow warning for nine other northern counties.
Overnight, the front will approach, enveloping us by Tuesday, trailing behind it a current about 15 degrees Celsius colder than our present conditions. Tuesday will unveil an overcast sky, punctuated by pockets of sunshine in the south and southeast amid heavy clouds.
Showers may sprinkle these regions, while elsewhere, rain is anticipated, especially in several locations across western Transdanubia, possibly even manifesting a shift in precipitation in the KÅ‘szegi Mountains.
As evening descends, precipitation will gradually wane. Along the weather front, strong gusty winds will sweep from the north to the northwest. Daytime temperatures will generally hover between 8 to 14 degrees Celsius, though, in the southeast, they may briefly soar above 20 degrees Celsius midday before descending again.
By Wednesday, temperatures are anticipated to stabilise, reaching highs ranging between 12 to 17 degrees Celsius nationwide. While persistent rainfall is expected to cease, scattered showers remain a possibility, alongside the potential for isolated thunderstorms in the lowlands. Winds from the north-northwest are forecasted to maintain strength, particularly in this region.
Thursday is anticipated to bring predominantly cloudy skies, with expanding cloud cover across a broader expanse. Expect scattered showers and thunderstorms to pepper the day, accompanied by robust northerly winds, occasionally gusting in intensity.
Daytime temperatures will predominantly range between 11 to 16 degrees Celsius. Moving forward from Thursday, temperatures are expected to drop as low as 0 to 7 degrees Celsius at dawn, minus 3 to plus 6 degrees Celsius on Friday and minus 2 to plus 6 degrees at dawn on Saturday.
In the long term, ensemble forecasts consistently indicate minimal variation over the next week or two, suggesting a continuation of slightly colder-than-average weather conditions.
During significant shifts in weather patterns, it becomes crucial to prioritise one’s health, as these transitions can impact the body in various ways. Individuals may experience heightened susceptibility to conditions like migraine headaches, joint discomfort or a general sense of malaise
Given the abruptness of such changes, it is probable that many residing in Hungary may encounter these effects. Therefore, it is advisable to remain vigilant and attentive to any symptoms, taking appropriate measures to mitigate their impact and safeguard overall well-being.

Heat record: never before so hot in Budapest and Hungary on 14 April
The national weather service HungaroMet said on its website that Budapest and Hungary as a whole witnessed record-high temperatures in the early morning and during the day on Sunday.
The mercury hit 31.2 degrees Celsius in Baja, in southern Hungary, breaking the previous record temperature of 28.7 C measured in Túrkeve in the east in 1939.
According to HungaroMet, the Budapest daytime high was also broken, with 29.8 C recorded in the 4th district, nearly 3 degrees higher than the previous record of 27 C measured in the 21st district in 1939.
A new highest minimum temperature of 15.9 C was recorded in Boda, in the southwest, nearly 2 C higher than the daily minimum temperature of 14 C measured in Gyöngyös and Kisbér in 1989.
Budapest’s János Hill also witnessed a record-high dawn temperature of 14.6 C, breaking the previous record of 14 C measured at the Budakeszi station in 1939.
As we wrote earlier, some outdoor pools are already open in Hungary, but the cold returns next week; details HERE.
Climate change: Additional heat records broken in Hungary
Several heat records were broken in Hungary on Saturday, the national weather service HungaroMet said on its website.
A daytime high of 27.6 degrees Celsius was measured in Derékegyház, in south-east Hungary. The last record (27.5C) was registered in Orosháza, in the same area, in 1906.
In the capital’s 4th district, a maximum of 26.4 C was measured, breaking the record daily high of 25.6 C measured at the Országút (Country Road) weather station in 1939.

Summer weather is here: some outdoor pools already open in Hungary, but cold comes back next week
This weekend will be as warm and sunny as if summer had arrived: we can expect even 30 °C. Therefore, some places already enabled their guests to use outdoor pools in Hungary despite it being only April.
According to infostart.hu, most Hungarian open-air pools and beaches are expected to open only at the weekend of Pentecost (19 May), while others postpone that until the end of the school year. Before, the general opening time of the Hungarian beaches was 1 May. However, the COVID-19 and the energy crisis rewrote those “rules”.
Heat records and opening outdoor pools in Hungary
This spring has been warm, breaking heat records one after the other everywhere in Hungary. For example, on 1 April, the new afternoon record temperature for the day was 30.2 degrees in Kelebia. The previous record was in Körmend but it was only 27.7 degrees. Here are some additional heat records showing that our weather is changing unstoppably.
Thus, multiple spas and baths opened their outside pools to the public during the spring break or the Easter long weekend. The general secretary of the Hungarian Spa Association (Magyar Fürdőszövetség) told hirado.hu that school breaks mean lots of visitors.
Cold front to conquer Hungary next week
Zoltán Balogh said most Hungarian beaches would open at Pentecost or after the start of the summer break due to money-saving reasons. However, he encourages everybody to keep an eye on the opening times of their favourite baths, beaches, and spas because – due to the hot weather – the number of visitors may reach summer numbers.
April is changeful in Hungary. According to meteorologists, next week will see a significant cooling with a cold front arriving in the Carpathia Basin. In most places, there will be lots of precipitation through showers and rain, which is important for agriculture. On Wednesday and Thursday, the maximums will be between 10-15 degrees only, telex.hu wrote. Now, the sun is shining so warm that it feels like July has arrived. Based on forecasts, on Sunday, the daily maximum may exceed 30 °C.

Anticipating summer: Beach season preparations, price changes and trends for 2024
With Easter behind us, thoughts turn to the eagerly awaited summer season, although the impacts of climate change may not necessarily herald an early opening for beach enthusiasts. Nevertheless, it’s time to delve into what awaits regarding beach ticket prices once the season kicks off.
The meteorological forecast predicted temperatures ranging from 20 to 24 degrees Celsius for the Easter long weekend. This pleasant weather outlook aligned with seasonal reopening plans, such as the unveiling of the Margaret pool at Palatinus, which underwent renovations last year.
While Palatinus’ updated pool is set to welcome visitors and tents are being packed away from various swimming pools and outdoor areas, indicating the seasonal shift, there remains a degree of uncertainty regarding beach season timelines.
Additionally, news of an expected 5-13% increase in beach ticket prices, below last year’s inflation ratio, underscores the evolving dynamics in recreational offerings and economic adjustments.
Furthermore, preparations entail the removal of tents from the swimming pool area at Paskál Spa under Budapest Spa and Thermal Baths Ltd, signalling the transition to warmer weather and expanded recreational offerings, according to Világgazdaság.
When can we expect Hungarian beaches to open?
It’s anticipated that the Gellért Bath’s outdoor pool and the Pala adventure pool will be operational by the end of April, with other beach pools and beaches expected to follow suit from late May to mid-June. However, this is subject to change and dependent upon weather conditions.
Traditionally, the beach season kicks off on the 1st of May. However, contemporary trends suggest that beachgoers now await temperatures surpassing 30 degrees Celsius, with 24-25 degrees Celsius no longer sufficing to maintain beach operations.
The commencement of the beach season hinges on weather patterns and projected visitor numbers rather than a fixed calendar date, ensuring revenue surpasses operational costs, especially given rising energy expenses.
The beach life of 2023
According to a letter received by Világgazdaság from Budapest Spa and Thermal Baths Ltd:
Last summer proved challenging due to cool weather in May and a rainy June, which was unfavourable for beach life
Last year’s July began with fluctuating weather patterns, showcasing extremes such as a 32-degree Celsius day that drew around five thousand visitors to Palatinus, even on weekdays. However, in contrast to this, on unfavourable weather days, beach attendance plummeted to less than 300 individuals.
The heatwave of 2023 persisted until mid-July, extending through August with numerous heat-warning days, overlapping even with the start of the school year, significantly influencing beach attendance throughout that period.
The peak day of the season saw over 7,000 bathers purchasing tickets for the Palatinus under Budapest Spa and Thermal Baths Ltd. The company has a longstanding tradition of opening its pools and beaches based on weather conditions, typically from late April to mid-June, a schedule they plan to uphold this year as well.
Meanwhile, ongoing preparations for the beach season include renovating and cleaning pools, maintaining fun elements and slides as well as landscaping and beautifying gardens, as indicated by the bathing company.
Price change at the beaches
Starting from the 8th of January 2024, admission ticket prices for Budapest Spa and Thermal Baths have risen by approximately 5-13%, a modest increase compared to the Hungarian Central Statistical Office’s reported inflation rate of 17.6% in 2023.
Similarly, beach ticket prices are anticipated to undergo a similar adjustment, staying within the range of 5-13% below the inflation rate for the upcoming season.

Fundamental change: cold conquers Hungary with possible snowfall!
After the heat records we experienced in February and a trend of continuously rising temperatures, fundamental change is here. It seems this year’s hot spring will be interrupted by an immense cold front, bringing even snowfall to Hungary.
According to idokep.hu, a Hungarian weather forecast news outlet, a cold front will bring freezing temperatures and even snow to some places in Hungary. Based on the reports of meteorologists, the cold will arrive tomorrow afternoon.
Thermometres will show 16-21 degrees tomorrow in the early afternoon, but with the arrival of the cold front, those maximums will decrease to only 10 degrees. You may find a shocking WRF animation showing the considerable change in THIS article, please, scroll down a bit to reach it.
Cold front expected in Hungary
Furthermore, strong winds are expected, which will further reduce our heating comfort.
By Sunday, we can say goodbye to the maximums around 20 degrees. In most parts of the country, the daily maximum will not exceed 7-13 °C. In the mountains, even snowfalls may take place.

Shocking weather: Brutal rain and snow expected this weekend in Hungary
We have been blessed with pleasant weather in Hungary for the past weeks. However, sunny days are over for now. Heavy rains are expected all across the country, in certain areas it might even snow. Do not forget to bring along your umbrella this week!
Changing weather in Hungary
Surprisingly, the weather in Hungary was very pleasant in February. For a moment, we all forgot that it was still winter. Even some flowers started to bloom earlier due to the warm weather. However, the winter weather is making a comeback this week.
As Economx notes, residents of the capital and some of the agglomeration experienced a weather phenomenon which is quite unusual in March. Heavy showers were accompanied by small hail in several places on Wednesday afternoon in Hungary. Here are some photos taken in Gödöllő and Budafok (near Budapest) this Wednesday:
This Thursday was gloomy as well, and many areas experienced heavy rains. Daytime highs stayed relatively high, between 6 and 11 degrees Celsius. According to Pénzcentrum, the gloomy weather will stay for this week. Lovers of nature and garden owners may fear that below-zero temperatures would kill tender plants.
Friday
Friday morning is expected to bring mostly cloudy conditions across the region, with moderate to mostly cloudy skies anticipated in the southwest and northeast. There is a possibility of rain and showers, with some areas experiencing a change in scenery. In the early hours, humidity may increase, leading to foggy conditions in sheltered parts of the Transdanubian region. Strong gusts of northeasterly and easterly winds are likely, particularly in the northeast.
In the afternoon, the sky will be mostly cloudy or overcast, but in the second half of the day, the skies will start clearing up. Scattered rains are to be expected in certain areas from the afternoon hours. In some areas, the wind is set to intensify, initially from the northeast and later from the southeast. By the early afternoon, temperatures are expected to range between 6 and 12 degrees Celsius. Overnight temperatures are forecast to range between 0 and 5 degrees Celsius in regions with heavy cloud cover and precipitation. However, cooler temperatures can be expected in sheltered areas, with lows dropping as low as -4 to -5 degrees Celsius in cold-prone regions.
Saturday
On Saturday, after the haze clears, stratus clouds will appear. Later that day, the clouds are expected to move in from the southwest at higher altitudes, accompanied by periods of sunshine. While light rain may occur in certain locations, significant precipitation is not anticipated. Strengthening winds, primarily southeasterly, are expected in many areas. Temperatures at dawn are projected to range from -1 to 4 degrees Celsius, though colder conditions may prevail in wind-sheltered regions of the northeast. By early afternoon, temperatures are set to rise, reaching between 8 and 15 degrees Celsius.
