Teacher union protests against vocational training changes in Hungary

The PDSZ teacher union on Monday sent a petition to the innovation and technology ministry calling on the government to cancel planned vocational training reforms.

PDSZ head Tamás Szűcs told a press conference that the plan had been drafted without involving professionals in the field, and those affected would not have enough time to adapt to the changes.

Under the new rules, vocational trainers would no longer be subject to the law on public servants but would be regulated by the Labour Code instead, he noted, adding that this posed a “great danger” to the profession.

The PDSZ union wants its strike committee to join forces with that of PSZ, another teacher union, he said.

At an earlier protest, Szucs said

the government had “blocked” two demonstrations of teachers,

saying it was nearly impossible to hold a strike in Hungary’s public sector.
