What started as an ordinary school day in Budapest ended in a police operation. Authorities detained a teenager after being alerted by Slovenian officials, who suspected the boy of planning a school massacre in Budapest.

An international tip-off triggered the investigation

A warning from Slovenia, following a stabbing incident, set Hungarian authorities in motion and ultimately led to the arrest of a student in Budapest. During the foreign investigation, it emerged that the attacker had been in contact with a Hungarian boy via the online chat platform Discord, and the content of their conversations quickly raised serious concerns.

The two teenagers were not merely chatting – they were actively encouraging each other to commit acts of violence that would lead to a massacre. This connection set in motion the chain of events that led to intervention by Hungarian authorities.

Violent fantasies and concrete plans about the massacre

Messages uncovered by investigators suggest that the Budapest boy had been planning a serious massacre at his own school. Their conversations included references to knives, Molotov cocktails, and even firearms. He did not speak in vague terms: he identified specific targets and described his plans in disturbing detail.

In one message, the suspect reportedly wrote:
“I’m going to throw Molotov cocktails, behead people, and shoot everyone in the head,” according to 444.

Authorities believe the teenager may have been planning to kill more than thirty people, including responding police officers.

Bullying and frustration in the background

The conversations also revealed that both teenagers had previously experienced bullying at school. This shared experience appeared to strengthen their bond and may have contributed to the emergence of violent, extreme ideas and planning a massacre.

Experts warn that such situations are particularly dangerous when reinforced online. Young people can easily find themselves in so-called “echo chambers”, where extreme views are amplified and normalised.

Police operation at the school

Hungarian authorities eventually apprehended the 15-year-old at his school. The operation was swift and coordinated, preventing a potential tragedy. Investigators seized electronic devices from his home and reportedly found a knife that may have been intended for the planned attack.

Prosecutors sought his detention, but the court imposed a less restrictive measure for now. The legal proceedings remain ongoing, with the prosecution already indicating plans to appeal.

Serious charges, serious consequences

The boy faces charges including preparation for homicide and aiding a violent act abroad. Although he has not made a statement and denies the allegations, the evidence gathered so far suggests a highly serious case.
