The best Christmas fairs in rural cities of Hungary
Although the Christmas fair at Vörösmarty Square opened almost two weeks ago already, major rural cities are preparing for the Christmas bustle as well. This is the season to be jolly, so look up the closest Hungarian town and visit their fairs, you will not regret it. Let me suggest three in three different regions of the country.
Szeged
Christmas is no half measures in Suncity; the organisers of the local advent fair told MTI that a 10-storey-high Ferris wheel would be set up at Dóm Square, but a straw labyrinth and an open-air ice-skating rink will also await the residents and guests of Szeged, Index says.
The wheel can carry 144 people.
Visitors may choose from various handmade products at the fair, but kids will find being there joyful as well, with the help of the Castle of Tales which will host a Bogyó and Babóca exhibition or the Castle Cinema and various handcrafting sessions. Due to its tremendous success, the Dome will be decorated with light painting again every Saturday in December. The Christmas fair of Szeged will open on Friday.
Pécs
The time of Advent is always special in the capital of Baranya county. The kith and kin of the city come together in the fair to taste the Christmas spirit.
The scent of mulled wine, chimney cake and roast chestnut pervades Széchenyi Square,
together with the melodies of choral musicians and the lights, making the main square of the city a real casket.
The smallest members of the family can visit the house of Santa Claus, admire the light paintings and watch the candle-lightning ceremonies on Sundays with their parents. Similarly to Szeged, visitors can buy handmade products and relax for a while to really get into the Christmas spirit. Széchenyi Square turns into a fairy tale for the time of the advent fair which will open on 30th November.
Debrecen
The Calvinist Rome awaits its guests with irresistible goods, handcrafts and warming mulled wine in almost 100 wooden cabins. Debrecen will install a 45-meter-high Ferris wheel on Kossuth Square, for the pleasure of locals and those visiting the city. The wheel will be at their service during the full period of the fair.

Those who want to stay fit after the huge calorie intake can try ice-skating in front of the Reformed Great Church of Debrecen. The second biggest city of Hungary will open its fair on Friday as well.
