The legendary Corvin Department Store reopens in Budapest!
The Corvin Department Store was one of the oldest department stores in the capital. Now, after more than 50 years, the facade of the building will be visible again. The department store it will open its doors to customers in the autumn.
The renovation of the Corvin Department Store has been delayed for many years, napi.hu writes. The work started in May 2018 with the demolition of the aluminum screen-like cladding. However, it seems that not only the renovation of Blaha Lujza Square, but also the reconstruction of the store has been delayed.
The country’s first mall was built in Budapest in 1926, but it burnt down during WWII in 1944. It opened in 1948 as the Budapest Wholesale Store (Budapest Nagyáruház). Since the renovation began, the scaffolding has made it hard to see the neoclassical building’s ornate façade, but the curtain will soon be coming down, Józsefváros Újság reports.
During the inauguration of Blaha Lujza Square in 2022, the Corvin Department Store was still largely scaffolded. However, the scaffolding covering the building is scheduled to be removed in a ceremony in the second half of May.
According to Olivér Balogh, the manager of the company carrying out the project, the renovation is well underway, but the stores are not expected to open until late summer or early autumn this year.
