THE ranking: Hungarian university among the world’s best
THE (Times Higher Education) has shared its latest higher education ranking. They ranked only the “new” institutions, i.e. founded a maximum of 50 years ago. One of the Hungarian universities reached a prestigious position on the list.
THE’s Young University Rankings considered the same criteria as in the case of the general list. The only difference is that the emphasis on reputation was smaller since the new universities did not have enough time to develop that compared to their hundred-years-old competitors in the education market.
According to eduline.hu, the universities were ranked based on their education, research, knowledge transfer, and international role. In this year’s top list, there are 605 institutions. One is Hungarian, the University of Óbuda, between the 351-400th place. The institution was created in 2010.
Interestingly, the university was not on the 2021 list but appeared on THE’s 2022 ranking. However, then, it was between 301 and 350th place. Eduline did not give an explanation why it fell back. However, there is a trend that universities run by newly-created foundations drop on such lists. Furthermore, as we wrote HERE, they will not be able to receive Erasmus and Horizon funds because of a debate between the European Commission and the Hungarian government. The Commission wants changes in the relevant laws. The Hungarian government sent a draft about the planned modifications, but the Commission highlighted they could analyse only laws. As a result, for example, the University of Óbuda will not be able to participate in the Erasmus and Horizon programs from September, provided there is not a quick agreement between Brussels and Budapest.
Youth Day at the University of Óbuda:
Among the “aspiring” Hungarian universities considering THE’s Young University Rankings, there are two institutions, the István Széchenyi University and the University of Sopron. However, they did not meet this year’s requirements, so they appear in a “reporter” status in the ranking. Currently, there are 358 universities in that category on the list.
The first place on the list belongs to the Singaporean Nanyang Technological University. The Chinese The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology follows it. The bronze medal went to a European university, the Parisian Sciences et Lettres. France has 19 other universities on the list, while the Italian Humanitas University debuted in the 29th place in the ranking.
According to the latest CWUR ranking, Budapest’s ELTE is the best university in Hungary. Read more HERE. In THIS article, you may read what QS says in that regard.
