The top 10 best restaurants in Hungary – Surprising 1st place & Photos

This is the 15th time when Dining Guide made a list of the best restaurants in the country. This year the first place is interesting because the winner restaurant only opened a few months ago and it already overtook two Michelin star restaurants.

Index reported Dining Guide’s list of the best restaurants. On February 25, Dining Guide held its annual Volkswagen Dining Guide Ball when, besides announcing the best restaurants in Hungary, several other awards were given. The main prize was given to Stand Restaurant and to its directors Tamás Széll and Szabina Szulló. The confectionery of the year award was presented to Mihályi Patisserie – same last year – and the best alternative restaurant award is the Pizza, Kávé, Világbéké’s (Pizza, Coffee, World Peace).

Besides the Hungarian jury, Dining Guide invited famous chefs from abroad. This year Enrico Crippa, who has three Michelin stars, helped in the ranking. Besides Crippa, Fausto Arrighi was invited, who spent 36 years at Michelin Guide and has a lot of experience.

Stand Restaurant is the best in the country

Stand opened in July 2018 and finished the competition with 94+ points. According to the jury, the restaurant not only stands out in Hungary but has all the necessary features and equipment to become significant on the international market of restaurants. The energy, profession, and faith in the restaurant made it the most successful one in Hungary, and the jury is sure that soon the restaurant will become famous in the whole world.

The director of the restaurant, Tamás Széll is the most famous chef in Hungary, and he was the first one who made it into the Bocuse d’Or in 2013 and finished in the 10th place. In 2016, he won the European final of the competition and in the final round in Lyon, he finished as 4th.

Stand Restaurant is followed by Onyx Restaurant which made history in 2018. This is the first restaurant in the country which earned two Michelin stars last year.

Costes Restaurant – last year’s winner – got the 3d place this time with 93 points, but Dining Guide ensured everyone that the restaurant did not lose its exceptional services. The restaurant got its Michelin star nine years ago.

Borkonyha, Costes Downtown, and Babel Restaurants got 92 points while MÁK and St. Andrea Restaurants got 91. A newcomer on the list is the Textúra Restaurant which finished the competition with 90 points. Anyukám Mondta Restaurant is the only restaurant on the list which is located in the countryside with 90 points. Olimpia and Arany Kaviár (the oldest fine dining restaurant in Hungary) got 89 points.

Confectioneries & Street Food (Alternative Restaurants)

This year Dining Guide awarded coffee menus as well. This special award was given to Stand Restaurant. The best cocktail bar award is Boutiq’Bar’s while the serviceman of the year award is Miklós Lizsicsár’s who is the director of the St. Andrea Restaurant.

The best confectionery in the country is Mihályi Patisserie located in Vác (Pest County).

Dining Guide decided on using the term alternative restaurant instead of street food restaurant. This award is the Pizza, Kávé, Világbéke Restaurant’s in Miskolc (Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County).

Other awards

  • Best wine menu – Arany Kaviár Restaurant
  • Best young chef – Richárd Farkas
  • Best kitchen – Textúra Restaurant
  • Best innovative kitchen – Tiszavirág Restaurant
  • The Dining Guide Life Achievement Award was given to Lajos Bíró who is considered to be the reformer of the Hungarian gastronomy.

Made in Hungary

This year Dining Guide announced that they established Made in Hungary which is a gastronomical association co-operating with the Hungarian Bocuse d’Or Academy. This association aims to show the world the best meals made of Hungarian ingredients.

The first Made in Hungary meal’s ingredients are the world-famous Hungarian duck liver and Tokaji 6 puttonyos aszú. This meal can be tasted in particular restaurants – with a Made in Hungary logo – from February 26.
