The toughest and funniest Hungarian tongue-twisters

Tongue-twisters are usually funny sentences, words, small texts or poem excerptions that are quite hard to pronounce clearly. Especially because very similar words follow each other, so we mix them easily and end up saying the funniest things. The Hungarian language is a challenge in itself, you can only image what our lovely tongue-twisters are like 😉

We have previously reported on the “Te tetted e tettetett tettet, te tettetett tettek tettese” tongue-twister, which conquered the world and inspired us to look for even more funny Hungarian tongue-twisters on the internet. We were happy to see that the Hungarian language is abound in extreme and funny words, sentences.

Szeretlekmagyarorszag.hu is probably on the same standpoint as we are: we just can’t get enough of the curiosities of the Hungarian language! They collected the 20 toughest Hungarian tongue-twisters, which even cause problems for Hungarians. So don’t be disappointed if the following sentences confuse you. Think of them as a funny game with our language 🙂

  1. Ádám bátyám, pávát látván, ládán álván, száját tátván, pávává vált. (You could even add “Pápán járván”, “lábát rázván” or anything that comes to your mind with the letter ‘á’.) – This tongue-twister is about a man who turned into a peacock as he was standing on a box.
  2. Öt török ördög öt görög ördögöt dögönyöz örökös örömök közt. – This is about five Turkish devils punching five Greek devils.
  3. Derengett, dorongott, merengett, szorongott, kerengett dorong ott, de nem vett korongot.
  4. Az ipafai papnak fapipája van, ezért az ipafai fapipa papi fapipa. (Or: Az ibafai papnak fapipája van, tehát az ibafai papi pipa papi fapipa.) – This is about the priest of Ipafa, who has a wooden pipe.
  5. Mit sütsz, kis szűcs? Tán sós húst sütsz, kis szűcs? (Advanced level: Mit sütsz, kis szűcs, sós strucchúst sütsz, kis szűcs?) – What are you cooking, little furrier? Are you cooking salty meat, little furrier?
  6. Nem minden fajta szarka farka tarkabarka, csak a tarkabarka farkú szarkafajta farka tarkabarka… (mert ha minden fajta szarka farka tarkabarka volna, akkor minden szarkafajta tarkabarka-farkú szarkafajta volna.)  – This one is about magpies with variation-coloured tails.
  7. Sárga bögre, görbe bögre. (Try repeating it!) – Yellow mug, curved mug.
  8. Csepregi csikós itat a Tiszán, sárga selyem csengő cseng a csepregi csikós csinos csikaja nyakán! – This is about a wrangler watering his foal.
  9. Luxusmoszkvicskisbusz-slusszkulcs. (Or: A moszkvicsslusszkulcs egy luxus pluszkulcs.)
  10. Fekete bikapata kopog a fekete pepita patika kövezetén! – This is about the tap of black bull hooves.
  11. Nem lehet a Márta másé, mert a Márta már Tamásé.  – Márta can’t be other’s, because she is already Tamás’s.
  12. Azt mondták a hatalmasok: akinek a hat alma sok, az már ahhoz hatalmas ok, hogy ne legyen hatalma sok! – This tongue-twister is all about playing with the Hungarian equivalent of ‘power’.
  13. Egy icipici pocakos pocok pocakon pöccintett egy másik icipici pocakos pockot. A pocakon pöccintett icipici pocakos pocok visszapöccintette az őt pocakon pöccintő icipici pocakos pocok pocakját. – This one is about a tiny pot-bellied vole who knuckled another pot-bellied vole.
  14. Stresszes, strasszos strucc-sztreccscucc. – Stressful, strassy ostrich stretchy stuff.
  15. Ede, de bedezodoroztad magad! – This is about a man named Ede using deodorant.
  16. Nem minden csacsi csöcse csecse, csak a csecse csöcsű csacsi csöcse csecse, mert ha minden csacsi csöcse csecse volna, akkor minden csacsi csecse csöcsű csacsi volna. – This is about the breast of donkeys.
  17. Szeretnék szeretni, szerelmet szerezni. Szerelmes szívemet szívednek szegezni. Szólj hát szaporán szívemnek szerelme, szerelmes szívedet szeretni szabad-e. – This tongue-twister plays with the words love, loving and heart.
  18. Egy kupac kopasz kukac meg egy kupac kopasz kukac, az két kupac kopasz kukac. Két kupac kopasz kukac, meg egy kupac kopasz kukac, az három kupac kopasz kukac. – This one is about mounds of bold worms.
  19. Láttam szőrös hörcsögöt. Éppen szörpöt szörcsögött. Ha a hörcsög szörpöt szörcsög rátörnek a hörcsög görcsök. – This is about a furry hamster sipping on syrup.
  20. Sohasem hallottam szebben szóló szép sípszót, mint a Szászsebesi szépen szóló szép sípszót. – This is about the most beautiful pips of Szászsebes.
