Traditional Hungarian spirit Madarasi birspƔlinka is under EU protection!

The European Commission announced on Tuesday that it had registered a geographical indication for the Madarasi birspalinka spirit, making it the 12th Hungarian palinka to get EU protection, the ministry of agriculture said.

Madarasi birspƔlinka may be produced in commercial palinka distilleries located in BƔcs-Kiskun County, the EC said. The quince used as the basic ingredient may originate from this area only, it added. The high average temperature and plentiful sunshine of BƔcs-Kiskun County and the loose sandy soil which heats up quickly give the quince an excellent environment. The expertise used in processing the quince involves post-ripening, so that the aroma materials in the fruit concentrate further,

giving the palinka its unique flavour.

An exhibition showing 200 photos by Hungarian hunter, traveller, writer Count Zsigmond SzƩchenyi will open in the Budapest Capa Centre of contemporary photography on September 27, the curator of the show said on Wednesday. The pictures were taken by the count, a descendant of the Hungarian noble SzƩchenyi family, in Hungary and Europe, and during his several expeditions to Africa, India and Alaska, Istvan Viragvolgyi told a programme on public television M1.

The count compiled his photos with a dateline, descriptions and short stories in several albums, he said.

Count SzƩchenyi also had a passion for collecting. Although his collection of 1,300 trophies, including a world record addax trophy, was destroyed in a WW2 bombing raid, his 3,500-4,000 volume library on hunting including rare pieces has been preserved and can be viewed for research in the Hungarian Museum of Natural History, the curator said. The museum also keeps a collection of trophies Szechenyi shot during his expeditions to Africa in the 1960s, he said.

The exhibition will be organised to coincide with the international hunting expo Budapest will host between September 25 and October 14.
