Wolters World summarised in a video what you should try in Hungary when it comes to eating and drinking. They went over some of the classic Hungarian dishes, like Goulash and Chicken Paprikash, as well as the Palinka as an after- (or before-) dinner drink.
According to the maker of the video, Mark, there is a lot of paprika and cream in Hungarian foods, so everybody should be prepared for it before trying Hungarian meals.
He said that goulash is one of the most famous Hungarian dishes,
a meat and vegetable stew with paprika, and, in his opinion, it is good. You can have it in bread, sometimes it is a soup, and there are some other options as well. “It is way better than I had anywhere else in the world. Budapest is the place to have it,” he concluded.
In Hungary, there are tons of stews, he says in the video. You can have it as a meal or as a starter.
If you are in Hungary, you should try fisherman’s soup. It can be made with carp, catfish, or basically any fish in the soup, and it can also have noodles and dumplings in it.
He mentions the different kinds of paprikash as well. Hungarians make this traditional meal from different kinds of meats, with paprika and cream sauce. He also presents the so-called stuffed foods, like stuffed cabbage.
He says in the video that Hungarian dishes are very filling, so you do not need an appetiser. “I’m a big dude, but I’m quite full after that,” he added. He also said about
the Hungarian language that it is difficult to speak,
so he would not try to pronounce the names of the foods. He also liked lángos, of which there are a lot of versions, but he liked the sweet version most.
The most important thing to finish your meal in Hungary is pálinka. Sometimes, people’s tummies have trouble digesting all the paprika and cream, but this shot might help.
He also said that people speak good English, but you should not expect quick service. He said that it seemed to him that in Budapest, there are more Italian restaurants than Hungarian ones.
