Transcarpathian Hungarian soldier from the front spoke on Hungarian TV at midnight
An interview with a Hungarian soldier from Transcarpathia, who is serving on the frontline of the Russian-Ukrainian war, was broadcast by the Hungarian TV channel RTL at midnight, the start of the New Year. The video of Viktor Traski came on immediately after the national anthem, sung by teachers and students.
For most of 2022, teachers have been demonstrating for the renewal of education and a significant increase in their humiliatingly low pay, Telex writes. Here you can listen to the anthem sung by teachers and students of the Zoltán Kodály Elementary School of Music and Singing in Kecskemét:
Next on RTL came a video by Viktor Traski, a mathematician from Transcarpathia. The man talked about how he had volunteered for the army and had previously worked as an associate professor at the National University of Uzhhorod. On the first day of the Russian invasion, he refused to believe that Putin’s Russia had launched an attack on Ukraine. He only realised it when he received a call from the kindergarten to come and get his son because the institution was closing.
Then he decided he wanted to take part in the defensive fighting. His family was not happy about his decision. He joined the artillery, where at first he didn’t know exactly what to do, Telex writes. Occasionally, he can talk to his family on the phone: “I usually tell my wife that everything is fine. She says, ‘Well, come home then.’ And I say fine, I’ll be back.”
He also talked about how difficult it is to lose a comrade who served alongside you. He showed the trench where they currently are. If they hear a shell whistle, they have four seconds to get down, he shared. He hopes that the war will end soon, and wishes everyone peace in 2023. You can watch the video with Viktor Traski here:
Viktor Traski also thanked the Hungarian Academy of Sciences for the János Arany Young Researcher Award in a video sent from the front this spring. We also wrote about him and another Transcarpathian Hungarian soldier, you can find our related article HERE.
