U.S. House convenes to begin impeachment debate, vote
The Democrat-led House of Representatives on Wednesday convened to debate for several hours before two historic impeachment votes over U.S. President Donald Trump.
House Majority leader Steny Hoyer, a Democrat from Maryland State, said work will get “done by the end of the day.”
“Can you believe that I will be impeached today by the Radical Left, Do Nothing Democrats, AND I DID NOTHING WRONG!” Trump tweeted ahead of the debate. “Say a PRAYER!”
“We feel very strongly that we are compelled by our duty to our oath and the Constitution and our democracy to act today where we have found that the President of the United States has abused his power,” Hoyer said.
Ahead of the impeachment debate, the House will hold floor debate on the rules approved by the House Rules Committee on Tuesday night.
Under the rules, the House floor debate on the articles of impeachment will last six hours, which will be equally divided between Democrats and Republicans.
The rules also allow for a resolution appointing and authorizing impeachment managers for the Senate trial to be introduced on Wednesday, if the House votes to impeach the president.
After the procedural vote on the rules, the House will move into debate on the articles of impeachment against Trump.
Following the votes on the articles of impeachment, Trump could become only the third president in U.S. history to be impeached.
