David Lynch in Hungary – Budapest Photo Festival 2019 opening exhibition at Műcsarnok
The BUDAPEST PHOTO FESTIVAL is the biggest photography event in Hungary. In its’ third year in 2019, it opens with a real gem on the 28th of February in MŰCSARNOK, Budapest: with the living legend of American independent movie making, the great director, screenwriter, painter and musician, the one and only David Lynch.
The Budapest Photo Festival is an annual city-wide exhibition series what represents the contemporary and classical values of the photography by the presence of the Hungarian and international art scene. The aim of the Festival is to create Budapest to be the „City of Photography”.
Budapest Photo Festival: 28.02. – 20.04.
The opening event, David Lynch: Small Stories, is a photography exhibition that has its’ Central European Premiere here in Hungary.
The atmosphere of this unique collection is created by the glow of invisible coherences, the surfacing of hidden feelings and the blossoming of unleashed fantasy. Surrealism, esotery and the American way or visualizing anxiety and violence in an artistic and pop manner – from the legendary Norman Rockwell to contemporary thrillers – had a huge influence on both this series and Mr. Lynch’s overall work. It’s a journey beyond the reality.
The basis for Lynch’s surreal images is the reinterpretation of photomontages, portraits and reproductions.
These create such a time-space dimension, that give birth to a universe we are all familiar with from the master’s movies. The Small Stories collection is a psychedelic journey beyond reality into the world of emotions, humor, playfulness and restlessness, shedding light also on memories and wounds. Just as in his movies, dreams dominate in this series. The intertwinement of subconscious and reality provides the underlying power of its’ poetics.
The series was completed for the Paris photo month, the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in 2014, and was only exhibited three times to date.
Kurator: Klára Szarka
