EUR billions at stake: Hungarian government must reach agreement with the EU by 30 September

The opposition Socialist Party calls on the government to reach an agreement with the European Commission by September 30 on releasing funds for Hungary, the party’s deputy group leader said on Saturday.

“Because of the existential crisis and deteriorating standards of living the situation of Hungarian families is becoming increasingly difficult,” Zita Gurmai told an online press conference, adding that their entitlements including the maternity allowance and child benefits had not been increased since 2010. She noted that a creche subsidy provided until now to families in Budapest and 2,767 localities with insufficient creche capacity would be scrapped as of this autumn.

The Socialist lawmaker called on the government to make every effort to reach an agreement with the EC on the release of funds to Hungary which she said would also enable maintaining the creche subsidy.
