Remains of medieval cemetery discovered in Budapest
The remains of a cemetery established in the late 1600s have been found in Szász Károly Street, in District 2 of Budapest. This was reported by Gergely Őrsi, the mayor of the district, on his Facebook page on Thursday afternoon.
The Budapest Waterworks (Fővárosi Vízművek) were carrying out renovation work in the street next to Mechwart Square when they discovered the remains of coffins and human bones, 444.hu reports.
Tests have shown that the remains are over a hundred years old. The district enlisted the help of historians from the Budapest History Museum (Budapesti Történeti Múzeum). The experts determined that they could be even older, dating back to the end of the 17th century, during the Turkish occupation.
“We will try to commemorate the graves thus excavated in dignified conditions. Today, our colleagues removed a 3-ton boulder that may have also been on the site of the former cemetery, so the renovation work on Szász Károly Street will continue uninterrupted,” Őrsi added.
