UNESCO acknowledged the Bakony-Balaton Geopark with a prestigious title
After several years of preliminary work, Bakony-Balaton Geopark established by the Balaton Uplands National Park Directorate in 2006 received the “UNESCO Global Geopark” title, turizmusonline.hu wrote.
The recognition has the equal value as the World Heritage and the similarly prestigious Man and the Biosphere programs – kormany.hu wrote. The “UNESCO Global Geopark” trademark is an important element of the new International Earth Sciences and Geopark Program which was adopted the UNESCO celebrating the 70th anniversary of its existence on November 17, 2015. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization now legally accommodates the 120 members of the Global Geopark, including the Bakony-Balaton Geopark and the Novohrad-Nograd Geopark, which extends over the Hungary-Slovakia border.
The Bakony-Balaton Geopark has been the member of the Global Geopark Network since 2012. In its more than 3200 km2 area, we can find several geological and geomorphological values whose scientific and educational importance, rarity and aesthetic values are outstanding even by international standards, turizmusonline.hu wrote.
The area of the geopark is located in the Balaton Uplands and Bakony region. It includes a large part of the Balaton Uplands National Park, the High Bakony and Somlo Landscape Protection Areas, several nature reserves and the Fonyod and Balatonboglar region as well.
The geopark promotes the extremely diverse geological heritage of the area through geotouristic visiting sites, geo hikes, cave adventure tours, geo days organized for schools, geo camps, quizzes and – as the only one in our country – open geo tour trainings. Bakony-Balaton Geopark is much more than a geological wonderland.
