Unity parties demonstrate against Paks upgrade
Budapest, February 10 (MTI) – The parties of the opposition Unity alliance staged a demonstration in front of the Presidential Office after President Janos Ader had signed the law on upgrading the Paks nuclear power plant earlier today.
Co-leader of Dialogue for Hungary (PM) Benedek Javor drew a parallel between the current protest and the demonstration held in 1988 against the construction of the Gabcikovo-Nagymaros hydroelectric twin dam project.
Decision on the upgrade should exclusively be made by Hungary’s population in the April 6 general election and a referendum to be called later, he said.
According to organisers, at least 500 demonstrators gathered for the event. The crowd holding several Socialist flags and a few PM flags is set to march to the Parliament Building.
