Value preservation: Interactive map of Budapest’s oldest sites
The Hungarian Museum of Commerce and Hospitality (MKVM) has launched the Védett üzleteink (Our Protected Shops) programme in connection with the “Budapest 150” series of events. The project aims to draw attention to the values of old shops and restaurants that are threatened by closure or major renovation and modernisation. Check out these sites on an interactive map below!
Védett üzleteink – Our Protected Shops
The programme focuses on old shops, hotels and restaurants, pubs, cafés and confectioneries in the city centre. They include the Astoria Szálló (Astoria Hotel), the Duna Intercontinental Szálloda (Duna Intercontinental Hotel), the New York Kávéház (New York Café), Gerbaud and Ruszwurm Cukrászda (Gerbaud and Ruszwurm Confectioneries), Építészfórum reports. The site adds that the list is constantly growing.
The aim is to preserve and protect the portals and interiors of shops and restaurants with a long history in their original locations in Budapest. If this is not possible, the museum will also preserve the remaining salvageable items, the museum says. The focus is on establishments that are in some way threatened, facing closure or modernisation.

Sometimes I wonder if the city understands what made Budapest one of the most beautiful cites in the world. General upkeep and if you can’t come up with a better than restore what was there. The Astoria hotel is a good example- the corners where the stairs to the metro are like a toilet – planters are dead – does anyone ever get arrested or fined fo graffiti ?- this a good example of how it starts to the closure of business. The street is lined with great old buildings – most look empty. I noticed they painted the ugly light poles a pale yellow- let’s make them even uglier. There are strict laws for renovation but I guess it doesn’t apply to goverment agencies.

The state of regi posta utca 1052 – is APPALLING.
It needs a massive clean up.
McDonalds closed – renovations happening till September 2023 – work trucks up and down the utca with massive Hotel / Apartment construction corner of regi posta utca 1052 and Vaci utca – its cleanliness state POOR – un-acceptable.
Good initiative! Should have started much sooner. Many buildings and beautiful interiors are lost forever. The same happened all over Hungary with the mentions (Kúria) and historical countryside houses. Owners are not even forced to maintain historical buildings, which are protected monuments. This is one of the problems. A monument status law without forcing owners to maintain their buildings is a joke.
