Addressing the European Parliament’s plenary session today, MEP Márton Gyöngyösi (non-attached) talked about how the autonomy of universities was among the first freedoms that had helped Europe to become one of the most developed regions all over the world.
Today however, Hungary’s Orbán government tramples upon the freedom of universities by putting his party’s politicians in the governing seats of higher education institutions.
‘You do know our Fidesz-delegated fellow MEP László Trócsányi. But did you know he is the head of a university back in Hungary?’ asked Mr Gyöngyösi from the EP.
While MEP believes it is understandable that most Hungarian universities were excluded from the Erasmus and Horizon programs after such government interference, he nonetheless asked the European Union not to punish Hungarian students and researchers. Instead, just like he did back in December, he called for economic sanctions to be imposed on Viktor Orbán and his circles the same way Russian leaders were penalized. ‘It is time to take action and protect our values,’ the Hungarian MEP asserted.
