Breaking – Viktor Orbán arrives in Moscow, continues ‘peace mission’ with talks with Putin
Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has arrived in Moscow as part of his “peace mission”, the prime minister’s press chief said.
Viktor Orbán in Moscow
Orbán is scheduled to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin during his visit, Bertalan Havasi told MTI.
Shortly after his arrival, Viktor Orbán posted the visit on his official Facebook page, with the following caption:
“Moscow after Kyiv. The second stage of the peace mission.”
According to Telex, shortly after 9 AM on Friday morning, the Airbus A-319 government plane that usually carries Prime Minister Viktor Orbán took off from Budapest. The PM travelled to the Russian capital a few days after meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv.
Orbán does not represent the EU in Moscow
The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy issued a separate statement on Friday morning saying that Viktor Orbán will visit Moscow only in the framework of bilateral relations between Hungary and Russia, and will not represent the EU in any way in Moscow, Telex writes.
As we wrote on Thursday, the President of the European Council Charles Michel said on X (formerly Twitter) that the EU’s rotating presidency “has no mandate to engage with Russia on behalf of the EU.” He added that the European Council’s standpoint concerning the issue was clear: “Russia is the aggressor, Ukraine is the victim. No discussions about Ukraine can take place without Ukraine.”
Donald Tusk, Poland’s prime minister, took to the social media site to write: “The rumours about your visit to Moscow cannot be true @PM_ViktorOrban, or can they?”
FM Szijjártó is also in Russia
According to HVG, Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó also travelled to the Russian capital. The news site reported that a few minutes after 7 AM, the Dassault Falcon 7x aircraft, registration 606 of the Hungarian Defence Forces, usually used by the Foreign Minister, took off from Budapest Airport. The radar image shows that the luxury jet took off for Slovakia and then flew via Belarus to Russia, landing in Moscow shortly after 9 AM. Szijjártó posted on Facebook after arriving in the Russian capital:
“Arriving in Moscow. Another step for peace!”

If Orban could really accomplish something that would be great. Reality, however, is that Putin is going to do whatever he wants to acquire as much of Ukraine as he can unless the West muster enough support for Ukraine to enable them to push the Russians back. It’s as simple as that. Putin is a 21st century Hitler bent on his Russian version of “lebensraum” rooted in 19th century imperialism. What Orban is doing is a photo op designed to promote himself as a “statesman” for the domestic audience in Hungary. If he accomplishes something real he should be given credit for it and if he fails utterly he should be treated as a strutting idiot.
Mr. Orbán “just” needs to convince Mr. Putin to rethink the “maximalist” terms of his definition of a “ceasefire”. As people may appreciate by now (… Gaza …) it can mean lots of things.
In Russia´s terminology, it means Ukraine relinquishing all claims to Crimea, Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia – even though most UN member states do not recognize this, and disregards that Russian forces do not control all of these areas… Does this sound as “surrender” to anyone else?
“Peace!” – Mr. Orbán is obviously loving this bigger stage! Hungary is too small for the likes of He.
It didn’t take long for the anti-Orbán crowd to spew their pessimism about his Moscow visit in search of a long-awaited peace process. Just like their war-monger brethren in the EU, they value war over peace. Sad to call them countrymen.
Freedom Of Speech has totally ignored what Putin is. Orban is just a clown doing a dance hoping that you enjoy it. Do you really think he has one iota of influence over Putin? Are people that stupid? Let him go there but whoever Freedom Of Speech is I will tell you what. If Orban pulls off some fantasy miracle I will come on this blogsite and say “I was wrong.” If Orban fails you should come back and do the same.
Lets hope Orban can convince Putin to stop the war Russia started and order Russian troops out of Ukrainian land and make Russia pay for all the damage. Anything less is just a surrender to an aggressor and then we will surely see more aggression later on after Russia sees that it can win wars with aggression and threats. Russia surely values war over peace. Sad that some countrymen support Russian aggression and are willing to accept the war-mongering Russian demands.
I don’t understand how anyone can object to 1) talking, and 2) making an effort to end a war that’s costing us all dearly.
Absolutely demented.
Yes Michael Steiner ‘Absolutely demented’ those who support Putin’s invasion, while victim blaming others; too easy or ‘just following orders’?
Interesting how they keep insisting Putin started this. The US and EU started to remove the Ukraine goverment in 2013.
They every intention of moving NATO and EU in they were warned by Putin but they removed goverment anyway. They have been in control since. Imajine the number 2 in the US state department was in the crowd as the leader fled the country – later she is on tape deciding who would replace him. The US is 10 times the power of Russia. I’m sure Putin knows all about the Biden crime family and how the CIA operates. I think should debate Biden or negotiate with the Biden clowns. These are same people who impeached Trump for questioning the corruption.
Let me make one thing clear, Russia did not want this war, but was forced to do so. Victor Orban is the only European leader who try to stop the war in Ukraine, all the other European leaders they want war with Russia. But Europe have to understand that they can never win the war against Russia. Russia has disarmed Europe, those who gave all the weapon supplies to Ukraine. and beside that Russia is far ahead with weapon and missile technology which no country in the world has.
Destroyed the Abraham tanks, which where the cream of the crop, and even Russia can shoot down patriot missiles.
The west has the choice, either negotiate or Russia will move on conquer more territory from Ukraine.
America is the main culprit in this war, by overthrowing the Ukraine government in year 2014, and has also Europe involved in this, that the start of skirmishes in the Donbas, and the ultimate intention was an attack on Russia.
TM and Petrus have again been reading the Russian modified version of history books. Nope, it was not US nor EU that replaced the Ukrainian government. It was the people of Ukraine. The same people that are now fighting to keep their independence against Russian aggressors.
