Wage rise in 2026 will be lower than the Orbán cabinet promised

Sándor Czomba, the state secretary for for employment policy, told public television on Wednesday that the government would probably have to step in to get employers and unions to agree on next year’s minimum wage rise.

Czomba said “collective wisdom” would work this year, too, but added that it was “very likely” government intervention would be required for the sides to reach an agreement on the scale of the minimum wage rise.

At present, employers are proposing a minimum wage rise of around 6pc-8pc, while unions are pressing for a 10pc-12pc increase, he said.

Under a three-year wage agreement reached in November 2024, the minimum wage was set to rise by 13pc in 2026, but lower-than-expected GDP growth has forced a renegotiation of the deal.
