What you need to know about Merkel’s visit to Hungary
Home Secretary Sándor Pintér has decided that the Counter Terrorist Unit would be responsible for securing German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s visit to Sopron, Hungary, on Monday.
CTU announced on Sunday that the people of Sopron should expect roadblocks between 7 AM and 4 PM, during the “internationally protected person and their delegation’s visit in the city,” reported 444.
Authorities will keep up the route restrictions only until it is necessary for the foreign delegation’s safety. They ask for and thank Sopron’s traffic for their patience and understanding in advance for the expected inconveniences.
The reason for Merkel’s visit is the 30th anniversary of the so-called Pan-European picnic which took place next to Lake Fertő on August 19th, 1989. And for this occasion, the Austrian-Hungarian border was opened temporarily, and several hundred East-German citizens could go to Austria.
The 30th anniversary of the border-opening will be remembered together with Angela Merkel on Monday in Sopron. Merkel and PM Viktor Orbán will attend ecumenical worship and give speeches in the Evangelical Church of Sopron, then have a dialogue over lunch.
