Will Budapest host the Olympics in 2032?
On Wednesday, the presidency of the Hungarian Olympic Committee decided unanimously on the establishment of the Budapest 2032 Committee that will be responsible for considering Budapest’s application for the 2032 Summer Olympics.
To reflect on and carefully consider the issue, the Hungarian Olympic Committee has set up an eight-member committee, chaired by Attila Szalay-Berzeviczy, the former chairman of the Budapest Stock Exchange. The other members also come from the economic sector.
Based on previous experiences, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is expected to decide on the venue seven years before the event, so in this case, in 2025,
while applicant cities will have to indicate their intention to bid in 2023 at the latest.
“This year, the Hungarian Olympic Committee would not do its job well if it did not take seriously the issues that preceded the bidding for and hosting of the 2032 Olympics, did not set up a team, and did not take steps to thoroughly examine the case and its conditions within its organisational framework,” said Krisztián Kulcsár, President of the Hungarian Olympic Committee.
“The committee focuses on the comprehensive examination of the question of whether it is possible for Budapest to consider submitting its application for the 2032 Summer Olympics.
Preparation of a comprehensive feasibility and macroeconomic impact study and its presentation is the main task, which will be a complex process of one and a half years, in which all the elements of the previous applications have to be reconsidered,” said the head of the newly established committee, Attila Szalay-Berzeviczy.

The Secretary-General of the Hungarian Olympic Committee, Bálint Vékássy, revealed that the establishment of the committee is a completely autonomous and independent initiative, and in the case of a positive scenario, an extensive social debate will be needed since hosting an Olympics and Paralympics is a national economic venture that will affect the entire country for seven years, reported Hungarian news portal ATV.
