Winter’s last laugh? Hungary set for rapid shift to spring-like temperatures

Hungary is set to experience a sharp departure from wintry conditions as February kicks off, with meteorologists warning that any snowfall early in the week will be short-lived.

Snow and ice at the start of the week

Sunday and Monday will see lingering wintry conditions across much of the country, with snow showers still possible in several regions. Early Monday morning may bring frost and icy patches, particularly in the northern and central areas. In parts of southern Transdanubia, snow could turn into freezing rain as temperatures begin to rise in the atmosphere, according to Időkép’s weather forecast.

By Tuesday, a warm front moving in from the west and southwest will bring precipitation, including rain, sleet, and continued snow in the northern highlands. The weather will gradually shift northeastwards in the afternoon, leading to rain in most areas by evening, although some snow and icy conditions may persist in the North Hungarian Mountains.

Midweek mildness brings spring-like, double-digit temperatures

The real change comes on Wednesday as milder air flows in from the south. While the north will remain chilly, temperatures in the south could soar past 10°C, with the warmest areas reaching 12–13°C – a stark contrast to the early-week frost. By midweek, rain will dominate the weather nationwide, but southern regions will begin to see the precipitation taper off.

North–south temperature divide continues

Thursday will maintain a strong temperature contrast across Hungary. Northern regions may struggle to reach 5°C, while the south is expected to rise above 10°C, edging close to 15°C near the border. This mild trend is expected to persist into the weekend, with widespread daytime highs above 10°C.

Meteorologists note that while snow may still fall in the mountains, the overall winter chill will quickly give way to early-spring warmth across most of the country.
