Wizz Air’s subsidiary receives approval to operate flights to the USA

The British subsidiary of Hungary-linked low-cost airline Wizz Air has received official authorisation from the United States to operate flights across the Atlantic. The permit allows Wizz Air UK to run occasional charter services between the United Kingdom and the United States, primarily during the upcoming FIFA World Cup.

Approval granted by US authorities

According to AIRportal.hu, the airline obtained the required foreign air carrier permit from the US Department of Transportation after submitting its application earlier this year. The authorisation is the result of months of regulatory coordination, operational planning and preparation.

The permit will enable Wizz Air UK to organise ad-hoc charter flights across the Atlantic, mainly serving organised groups travelling to the World Cup. The tournament will take place across three host countries – the United States, Canada and Mexico – drawing teams and supporters from around the world.

Charter flights for teams and fans

The airline plans to use the authorisation to transport European football teams, supporters and organised travel groups to matches in North America. Most charter flights are expected to operate to destinations on the US East Coast.

Wizz Air said it expects strong interest from football teams and travel organisers seeking dedicated charter packages. Such flights are designed to offer flexibility and convenience for large groups travelling together for sporting events.

Travel agencies organising group trips to the tournament may also use these services, alongside corporate groups and sports organisations requiring customised travel arrangements.

No regular transatlantic routes planned

Despite receiving approval to operate flights between the UK and the US, the airline has reiterated that it does not intend to launch regular scheduled transatlantic routes.

In the past, Wizz Air’s chief executive József Váradi has repeatedly ruled out the possibility of scheduled flights between Europe and North America. He maintained this position even when the airline ordered the long-range Airbus A321XLR aircraft, a model designed to operate longer routes with lower operating costs.

Wizz Air UK currently operates three A321XLR aircraft in its fleet. However, the company reduced its total order for the type last November, cutting the planned purchase from 47 aircraft to just 11.

Strategic but limited expansion

By offering charter flights during major international events such as the World Cup, the airline can tap into demand for large group travel without committing to regular long-haul operations.

For fans travelling from Europe to North America in 2026, the move could provide additional travel options to attend one of the world’s biggest sporting events.
