Ambitious plans: Wizz Air aims to return to Ukraine, with routes reopening after a ceasefire

Wizz Air could return to Ukraine immediately after a ceasefire brings an end to the fighting between Russia and Ukraine. Following a restart of operations, the airline would open around 30 routes within six weeks and double this number within a year, according to its latest quarterly report.

Wizz Air’s management clearly recognises the opportunities offered by the Ukrainian market and has already made preparations to ensure that Wizz Air can return to Ukraine without delay once a ceasefire comes into effect.

As reported by AIRportal.hu, Wizz Air could return to Ukraine by launching 30 routes within six weeks, before doubling this figure within a year. Using aircraft based locally, the airline would offer approximately 5 million seats. By the end of the third year, Wizz Air could return to Ukraine with as many as 150 routes and an annual capacity of nearly 15 million seats.

Wizz Air could return to Ukraine with significant growth potential

The rapid reopening strategy aims to meet the travel needs of approximately 8 million Ukrainian citizens who have relocated abroad due to the war and wish to visit relatives. At a later stage, demand could be further boosted by inbound labour and travel related to reconstruction projects. In 2019, Wizz Air held an 11% market share in Ukraine, but if the Hungarian low-cost carrier could return to Ukraine quickly, this figure could rise to as much as 75%.

Recent figures show improving performance

As reported by Economx, Wizz Air’s quarterly report shows that company revenues increased by 10% year on year, while passenger numbers rose by 12.5%, reaching a total of 17.5 million passengers. Although the net result remains negative, the loss of EUR 139 million represents a significant improvement compared to the previous EUR 241 million. According to management, the financial year could close around break-even.

The airline’s fleet situation is also improving. While 40 aircraft were grounded at the end of 2024 due to Pratt & Whitney engine issues, by the end of last year, this number had fallen to 33. Progress with repairs is expected to allow all affected aircraft to return to service by the end of 2027. In the next financial year, the number of idle aircraft could therefore decline to between 20 and 25.

New bases and fleet expansion in Central and Eastern Europe

Wizz Air continues to rule out transatlantic services but has opened six new bases across Central and Eastern Europe and is expanding its fleet. This increase in capacity could also support plans under which Wizz Air could return to Ukraine. Management emphasises that both infrastructure and the regulatory environment would allow for a rapid reopening, while local service providers are prepared to meet higher demand.

Beyond its key role in the airline’s growth strategy, if Wizz Air could return to Ukraine, it could also play a major role in reviving the country’s travel market. The airline’s goal is for Ukraine to become a priority market in the coming years, strengthening Wizz Air’s long-term position in Central Europe.
